Texans 37, Buccaneers 9: Post-Game Thread

Jakespeare!

Here's the box score from what was a totally one-sided affair. Your Houston Texans are 7-3. Your Houston Texans are a legitimate contender.

I have never been able to type either of the preceding two sentences before. Gotta admit that it feels really, really good.

Leave your thoughts on a 7-3 Texans squad, or today's thrashing, or how fanfreakingtastic life as a Texans fan is right now in the Comments below. Let's enjoy this bye week.

Very impressive and now it feels like we’re ready for going quite deep… I feel we don’t need the bye right now though…

I want Green Bay…and I don’t think it would be as competitive as you think if Houston is playing like this (Against NO). I think Houston is tailor made to beat Green Bay as well. Strong running game to keep their O off the field and a big play defense that is good at stopping the run. The game would be entirely on AR’s shoulders and I KNOW he is up to the task, but the Texans have a good shot at putting them down should they be able to grind out some playoff W’s.

If you have a reason other than rooting for the team you think will win. You like the fans, and the players themselves are really hard playing good guys. Yeah, they’re developing a Suh-rivaling reputation, but for the most part it’s hard to NOT root for guys like AJ, Foster, and this crap defense turned 85 bears.

Thanks for being with us this week, and being so classy!

I attended the superbowl game at Tampa in 2001 (Ravens / Giants) and really liked that stadium! The Bucs are still rebuilding and will be a potent team soon! Hang in there and I hope your season turns strong through the end.

Thanks for having me and you guys should know about classy, as that describes you as well

RayJay is one of a kind. One word: CANNONS. It’s too bad this has turned out to be a rebuilding year, but we’ve got most of the materials we need to be a real contender. We just might need a new guy leading- sad to say, because Rah’s a great guy, but he’s looking lost and the same problems keep cropping up every week.

Freeman didn't look right today.

The Texan D had something to do with that, but I remember last year he had sort of a cannon arm, and it didn’t look that way today.

It's not just this week, though the pressure he was under didn't help

He’s not playing with confidence, he’s throwing off his back foot, and Olson’s dink-and-dunk West Coast scheme is totally wrong for his skills.

I still think he can be an elite QB

But he’s got a lot more development to go through first, and I don’t believe he’s got the right people coaching him.

Throwing off of his back foot? Houston knows a bit about that. Carr was pummeled so much he developed that tendency as well. Killed his career.

Great guy or not that team has very little discipline. The penalties killed ya’ll. He needs to be a hard ass with these guys and stop trying to be their buddy…that’s my guess anyway, maybe he IS a hardass and his assistants aren’t doing their jobs. I don’t know but those stupid penalties are game killers and they have GOT to be reduced significantly or that team will never amount to anything, no matter the talent.

The Bucs’ ceiling is 9-7 max this year- that’s not going to earn us an NFC wildcard, especially seeing as how we lose the tiebreaker against both the Lions and Bears.

Best of luck going forward

I see what you meant with Raheem Morris and Blumpkin on 3rd down. That must be MADDENING. In particular, I remember that 3rd and 2, they ended up running Blumpkin on a draw and he got absolutely stonewalled.

That’s just poor, poor coaching.

by Andres_Johnson on Nov 13, 2011 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks man

Yeah, it’s infuriating- the plays are so predictable that every fan can call them out before they happen. Blount’s our best back, he can make catches, and he’s just as good as BLumpkin in pass coverage- not to mention that taking Blount out immediately telegraphs the pass- but Olson keeps calling the same plays. The cliched definition of insanity: doing the same thing time after time expecting different results.

it’s the same reason the national media, besides being huge dumbasses, don’t cover the team and why the local media aka pancakes is terrible at it. we need a long string of success and it start with this year. I’ve supported the team since day one and remember games like the niners and texans in 06 when the number one pick was on the line and the rosencopter game. it’s those memories that tells me to wait and see them actually clinch a playoff spot before i’m convinced. but i am enjoying the ride this year.

The Bucs were beaten down early, ground to death with a steady running game, Freeman played very poorly, the Texans stopped their mountain runningback cold after his first few carries, and they could never get any momentum. Interceptions, sacks, run stoppage…it was a solid game for the Texans.

All that means is that a competent quarterback could’ve won that game by more than just one touchdown. If I have to read anymore about Tebow “guiding” them to a win, I’m going to kill myself.

yeahh cool

I’m planning to go to find somewhere to watch all the playoff games (whether we’re in or not, though I’m really confident we will be now) but we hardly ever get coverage on the TV over here so I just stream in my room during the season… if she’s still doing that somewhere in London though I’d definitely try and visit, about time I met other Texans fans in real life

I have relatives that moved to Houston a few years back

we get two NFL games on sunday on our satellite tv (hardly ever the Texans though) and I got into the sport watching those, just seemed natural to support the Texans cz Houston is the only real link I have to America, and nahhh, the US is just a cool country, I really liked Houston the one time I visited, so much nicer and more polite than England, on the whole

by EnglishTexan on Nov 14, 2011 6:55 AM CST up reply actions

Houston is a great place.

You chose the right team and we’re happy to have you!

Its kind of encouraging actually, for someone to get into the NFL through the little coverage you have out there. Over here NFL is a huge huge deal. You should try to make it to a Texans game here sometime while visiting family. Its a great experience.

I'd really like to make it to a Texans game

gotta start saving though, just to get out there is quite expensive…. My relatives are more baseball people, we went to an Astros game when I was out, when Lance Berkman was still there and they were respectable, so I have some idea of live Houston sport, but NFL was always what I wanted to watch tbh

Beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore

by Chrxtopher on Nov 13, 2011 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

I can't really place why.

But AL baseball is boring. It feels like there’s very little strategy; when to take a pitcher out is dictated by the situation 100% of the time, whereas in the NL there are quite a few more variables that come into play when making that decision.

Offensive strategies also feel more dull in the AL. It seems like you just get men on base and wait for a three-run homer. There’s not much of a running game for most teams, and taking the extra base becomes almost unnecessary.

Finally, seeing J.A. Happ going deep was fun. Seeing Brian Bogusevic’s pinch-hit walk-off grand slam was fun. You don’t get those moments in the AL.

Of course, none of that matters. It’s only a matter of time before the MLBPA forces the DH into the NL too. There’s way too much money to be had there by adding another big bat to the rest of the league’s teams.

…well, I guess I sort of can place why.

But it was also said Newton had terrible mechanics and horrible accuracy. I think in the right situation and with good coaching he’ll transition pretty well. He may not have a big arm but that’s not needed to succeed.

Wade Phillips... is the reason

It’s all Wade Phillips, looks at what he has done with our defense, and it started with the draft, where for the first time a DC was in Houston that could be relied upon to make important decisions such as Drafting JJ Watt and Brooks Reed in round 1 and 2, this draft is probably the draft that has had the best defensive players drafted, also Brandon Harris in round 3 he will probably be able to start if the Texans can teach him the way theyve thought Kareem Jackson. And the way hes changed the defense there is no doubt in my mind that if Phillips was not Reeds’s DC he would be doin what he is right now, Wade Phillips is BALLIN!!

by Pieter on Nov 13, 2011 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed!

But who put Vance there in the first place im pretty sure Phillips was the guy that said this guy he knows what hes doing and I want him as my 2ndary coach. This Defense is the pure product of Phillips putting the pieces together and in the right place, and that is what he said at the start of the year when he got hired, he said there are good pieces in Houston we just have to make them fit. Im pretty sure u can find a quote on that (or close) online.

Yup, Wade brought Vance in.

Its amazing. For YEARS now, we have watched players who have talent be ineffective because of the coaching. Our defensive players who have had good years always regressed under the coaching in place.

Bring in Wade and Vance and everything changes. Even Kareem Jackson has two good games in a row. Brice McCain is getting interceptions. I never truly realized just how important good coaching could be.

One worrisome thing for me..

Matt Schaub’s tendency to throw floaters in goal to go situations..

I mean who does that?

by leacheatsbabies on Nov 13, 2011 5:23 PM CST reply actions

also

the underthrown pass to Jacoby on the 1st play of the game was unnerving.

Jacoby would have scored if it wasn’t underthrown

True

you don’t throw floaters to the middle of the endzone..i would like to see Schaub set and fire with conviction more

Then again, Mason wasn't exactly looking for the ball either until it was too late

At least he managed to knock it loose quickly

My thought is, he was so open.

It’s better to have him wait for a sure catch than possibly overthrow a wide open guy for no gain.

by jkcheng122 on Nov 14, 2011 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

It was an all-out blitz...

He had one-on-one coverage on a crossing route, and he had to make sure that ball didn’t get tipped. It was thrown behind the receiver, but Mason should have been expecting that ball and adjusted accordingly. Even if he doesn’t wind up making the catch, he’s gotta at least fight for the ball (though credit is due for breaking it up after the defender grabbed it).

They HAVE to lose to someone. My guess is Atlanta. Cincy will get chewed up by two Baltimores and one Pittsburgh. Dalton will be lucky to have a starting receiver left standing. As for Carolina, Newton racks up lots of yards and loses. And he’ll only be on the field for 22 minutes.

I try to find weaknesses to prove that we aren’t elite and I think maybe our receiving crew? Then I remember we have a guy named Andre Johnson and I see we are as complete a team that I have ever seen.

Nose tackle and CB2 although CB2 is becoming less of a liability.

I’d also say the Texans are probably still susceptible to 4-5WR sets, though McCain and McMannis have looked better since the Saints game.

by Karsh on Nov 13, 2011 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

The only teams that can properly run those sets

Are the saints and packers. Nobody else has the core deep enough to hurt us in that. Our CB2 is average but isn’t a real weakness unless the team has a really good WR2. Nose tackle play seems to be up to average and against Tampa I would say above average. This team really has 0 glaring spots to attack unless you are a special kind of team ala the Packers.

I want to see this team against a top tier opponent at this stage of the season. Closest I guess is the falcons? The rest of this schedule we should be favored.

absolutely agreed.

I think much is made of the way we lost to New Orleans. Let’s not forget we were only 3 games into the season under Wade’s ‘d’, we’ve gotten better, and we only got spread out and beat the final 8 minutes of that game.

Me from 4 weeks ago would say our “glaring weakness” is QB, lol, but I’m not going to that well anymore. Schaub’s decision making is better, he looks more nimble on the bootlegs, and Kubiak’s coaching has been damn near flawless this 4 game win streak, and Schaub is the greatest beneficiary of it.

There is no “glaring weakness,” there are places to upgrade, sure, but there are no “glaring” problems. Oh, and if we end up playing the Packers this season…that’s only happening in the Superbowl. If that happens, do we even really care about our “weaknesses” at certain positions at that point? I’ll gladly take any assortment of Texans players vs the Packers in this year’s superbowl. lol.

by wiseonekms on Nov 14, 2011 1:00 AM CST up reply actions

Me too.

The Packers have more weaknesses than we do. If we met them in the SB, its a winnable game if we still have the #1 D.

by WhiskeyR on Nov 14, 2011 8:29 AM CST up reply actions

these are still big weaknesses

we just haven’t played any recent teams who can exploit them. the falcons game will be a real test as they have three serious receiving threats and a power running game.
