By now everyone knows our 7-3 Houston Texans are in 1st place, not only in the AFC South, but in the entire AFC. At least every Houston Texans' fan knows it and finally, it looks like we are starting to get a modicrum of national respect as well. But I'm still hearing a lot of disrespect not just nationally but locally as well. I guess that is to be expected when we have all suffered up to 9 years of heart-breaking, gut-wrenching, bleach-consuming, suicide-thought-instilling home-town
sandlot football. Or, for some of us who suffered through the Satan Bud Adams' years when no lead was safe. Personally, I still have nightmares where Elway crushed us with his legs, Montana crushed us with his awesomeness, and Reich just flat-out crushed us. Not to mention some of my earliest disappointment with memories of Houston football where Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain showed us what a true American Professional Football dynasty really was.
But I digress. I want to talk about our Texans and I want to know what is it going to take for everyone to say this year we are the real deal. JUMP!
So is the horrible stigma of this team going to finally be quashed when we make the playoffs? No? Ok, how about if we earn a home playoff game? No? Ooookaaay, how about if we get a first-round playoff bye? No again? Wow, what's it going to take? A playoff win? Still no? Ok what about if we make it to the SuperBowl and win it all, will that do it? I still don't think so. I believe that we will not only have to win it all this year, or at least make it to the SuperBowl, but we will have to have continued, sustained, success, for several years. That is what the last 9 years have done to this team, this city, and this fan-base.
What are the detractors saying about the Texans right now? Oh, we haven't played anyone. But the Texans are number 1 in defense in the entire league! Sure, but, we haven't played anyone. But the Texans have an amazingly awesome running game and also a top-10 offense! Right, but, we haven't played anyone!!!!! I don't know about the rest of you but I am so sick of hearing that I just want to strangle someone every time it's reiterated by some clodboys or besf loving moron who just can't stand that finally, for once, the Houston Texans SEEM to be the real deal and are doing better than these other mediocrity-loving teams are doing.
How do you stem the tide of hatred and ignorance against our beloved Texans? In a phrase: you don't. Only the play on the field will do that. I can spout fact after fact and stat after stat to show why this team is destined for great things and our strength of schedule could arguably actually help that argument. I'll be the first to agree we have had a very weak schedule. Cliche alert! You have to beat the teams you're supposed to beat. The Texans have done that with possibly 1 exception this year when Al Davis showed us the phantomly prowess of beyond-the-grave coverage skills! We also beat the Steelers
! Oh, that doesn't count, that's right. I would point out margins of victory as well as margins of loss as well in my argument, should I ever actually care to argue with any of our detractors. Of all the Texans victories only 1 has been by less than 10 points - Steelers. Of all the Texans losses, only 1 has been by more than 10 points. I think that is the most telling of all statistics. The games we have lost have been very close, even the Ravens
game where they scored late to buffer the margin of victory. Almost of all of our wins have been easy. Am I wrong? I've watched every game just like most of you and excepting the Steelers win, I was never really in doubt in any of them? Would last year's Texans have been 7-3 with the same record? Of course not! Oh, I've been digressing again and trying to argue against the nay-sayers regardless of my lack of desire to do so.
So, let me know what you think if you are so inclined because I would really like to get a general consensus. Am I right, that it's going to take a dynatiscal performance by the Texans over many years to completely shed our current stigma(s)? Or will a SuperBowl win do it?
Thank you for your time and go Texans!
