BREAKING NEWS: Matt Schaub Has "Significant Foot Injury" And "Will Miss Some Time"

Gary Kubiak just said so in his presser. Kubes says he's in a walking boot and will be sent to several specialists this week. He would not go as far as to say that Matt Schaub broke his foot and is lost for the year.

Updates to follow.

I know we all saw him hobbling after the QB Sneak

but he continued to play after that and seemed fine. I didn’t think much of it.

In any case, next man up for the time being. Two weeks to get Leinart prepared to hand off to Foster and Tate.

Honestly, I don't see the gameplan changing from the last four weeks

If Matt Leinart releases a pass 15 to 20 times a game and hands it off 30 to 40 times, results should be consistent.

They can stack the box on us to hurt the run game. Schaub changes things because of his willingness to throw the deep ball. Look at yesterday as an example.

Correction...
Schaub changes things because of his willingness to throw the deep ball

You mean underthrow the deep ball right?

Hopefully Leinart can at least do that…

I don’t want to diminish the effectiveness of Schaub during this run but hopefully Leinart can fill in adequately as he’s got some awesome weapons around him and has at least won games in the NFL previously.

I'm nonplussed

The offense has shifted to a run-first philosophy this season. All Matt Leinart has to do is keep defenses honest enough by making throws to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. He also has two weeks to prepare for what is, essentially, a preseason game against the Jaguars.

They will handle this speedbump the way they have handled losing Mario, AJ, Manning, and Foster. They will rely on their other players to pick it up. Leinart just has to throw enough to keep the other team honest. If he makes mistakes, this team is good enough to overcome mistakes.

But some of us in Arizona will be rooting for you guys now. Quite a few of us thought that Leinart was shafted by the coaching staff and FO here, and I hope he does well in the games that he starts for you guys.

He really is better than before

Not same same as he was when he played for the Cardinals. We saw that during pre-season. He has a great line to protect him. Running game to support him. AJ to make him look good. He’s also pretty mobile.

The left-handedness will throw off some of the receivers, but that’s what the extra week is for. To adjust.

This might be a good thing masked as a bad thing. Not enough game tape to gameplan against Leinart. And opposing teams will be focusing on the run game anyways.

On a hopeful note we have what, eight weeks until the playoffs? If it is a broken foot there’s a really good chance Schaub will be back by then. And the schedule is REALLY soft in the meantime. I still think we could go 11-5 even with Leinart.

Just read that too, thank you little one, why does god hate the Texans? Heard it on Battle Red Blog, posting now:

Well ive broken a foot or two in my life, 2 weeks for the stress fracture, and about 6 weeks for when i broke the top of my foot.

I’ve never liked Schaub, but ive never hated him. I think he is what he is, a good quarterback who can win you the game with the right people, and loose you the game without those people, but make it interesting. Better than most, but never a top tier QB. That said, he sells the play action pass better than anyone in the league (I really mean that)

I think Leinhart should be given the chance. I saw a few of his games in Arizona and I thought he did well, and he had no running game to speak off. If the coaching staff can limit his throws we can run the ball and play our strengths. In fairness to Leinhart, he has a stronger arm then schaub.

I tend to agree. Head Coaches don't use words like "significant injury" the day after a game

especially regarding the starting QB

especially when they down play other injuries like Andre’s and he proceeds to sit out 6 games

In Andre's case, I tend to think he would've been playing sooner if the team were struggling at all

I hate to be Captain Bringdown, but we aren't a running team

We’re a play action team. Everything is based on that. Leinart hasn’t even shown a willingness to throw the ball down-field in exhibition games.

If that has changed? The downgrade is significant, but not as much so.

You might be right, but we also haven't seen him play behind the first string offensive line.

What I remember from Leinert in preseason

was that he was constantly under pressure and had no time. He didnt panic under the pressure and throw int’s. He took sacks rather than throw into coverage. I think that is all we need…for him not to make stupid plays. I think the first string OL will give him more time, and then he might be in position to throw downfield. Honestly, I think he will do fine, and even though it might take a bit for him to shake off the rust, the bye week and Jax game comes at a good time for that.

No weight bearing on the foot if it is a lisfranc injury

Treatment options include operative or non-operative treatment. If the dislocation is less than 2 mm, the fracture can be managed with casting for 6 weeks. The patient’s injured limb cannot bear weight during this period. For operative treatment, screws +/- k-wire will be used for internal fixation of the fracture after closed or more likely open reduction. Again, the patient’s injured limb should not bear weight for approximately 6–12 weeks. The screws/k-wires are usually removed later, sometimes before weight bearing.

I'm actually optimistic about this move.

Leinart isn’t a bad qb and has had plenty of time to learn the system. plus it’s not as if schaub won’t be around. he just won’t be able to play. dennison is a really good qb coach and offensive coordinator and kubiak can focus on running the ball more and using that to set up the play action. I think we will be just fine. this should cheer everyone up.

Lisfranc: 6-12 weeks

The Lisfranc fracture is a fracture of the foot in which one or all of the metatarsals are displaced from the tarsus.1

It is named after 18th- and 19th-century surgeon and gynecologist Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin.

The screws/k-wires are usually removed later, sometimes before weight bearing.

by MeMongo on Nov 14, 2011 4:37 PM CST reply actions

What is a typical course of non-operative treatment?

For a stable Lisfranc injury, treatment begins with a period of immobilization either in a removable boot or frequently a cast that includes the foot and the leg below the knee (a short leg cast). This typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks with the patient using crutches and not allowed to put weight on the injured extremity. At the same time, it is important to elevate the injured leg to decrease the swelling and therefore the pain from the injury. Icing the foot can be done also for pain and swelling if a boot is used and direct access to the foot is possible. Pain medications, usually in the form of anti-inflammatories, are also taken. In the case of a more minor injury, the duration of limited weight-bearing and immobilization may be shortened at the treating physician’s discretion.

What happens after surgery on the Lisfranc joint?

Postoperatively following a typical Lisfranc joint repair, the patient must be non-weightbearing on the operative foot. This period of restricted weight-bearing and relative immobilization is typically 6-8 weeks. Subsequently, the amount of weight-bearing allowed is gradually increased over the next few weeks. Physical therapy is initiated and sports-specific training is begun. At some point, once the torn ligaments have been given sufficient time to heal, the screws used to fix the Lisfranc injury are removed as a minor operative procedure. This again allows normal motion and function to take place in the athlete’s midfoot region. It also avoids breaking of the screws by a repetitive fatigue mechanism with impact loading that occurs during weight-bearing on the repaired foot. Although the actual timing is somewhat controversial, this usually occurs somewhere between 3 and 6 months after the first operation takes place.

When can someone typically return to playing sports after being treated for a Lisfranc injury?

Stable Lisfranc injuries that do not require surgery may cause an athlete to miss 2 months or more of their season. However, most athletes are able to successfully return at some point. Those injuries that are unstable, and require surgical repair, are serious injuries that almost always cause the injured athlete to miss the remainder of their season. It is also not uncommon for a high level athlete to not be able to return to the same level of athletic performance even in following seasons. Two well-known examples are Eric Rhett and Duce Staley both of whom had surgery for a serious Lisfranc injury and never successfully returned to their pre-injury form.

What is the prognosis of a Lisfranc injury for an athlete?

A Lisfranc injury is a very serious, often season and sometimes career threatening injury. Untreated, a Lisfranc injury can lead to chronic, debilitating pain in the midfoot. The injury also is a cause of secondary arthritis of the involved joints which is possible even with the appropriate care (surgical or not), but is considerably higher if not treated in a timely fashion.

Im praying he' not done for the year and having Dre back soon keeps me from pulling the trigger.

If this was a couple years ago i would of drank myself to death, but knowing we have THE BEST WR coming back and have a number 1 defense im pretty optimistic. Not to mention our schedule is favorable and have the best running game in the league. Leinart needs to just manage the game, make the right decisions, and not turn the ball over and i think we’ll be fine. Im confident we’ll for sure make the playoffs but if Schaub is out for the year i doubtful about a playoff run.

I think we can get similar results with Leinart

My only consolable bit I can take away from this is that Kubiak is a great QB coach.

They don’t call him the horse whisperer for no reason. I know it’s not a lot to take from but we’ve gotta weather this. I’m starting to think we really need to invest in a QB in the next 2 years through the draft.

Everyone in the world knows what Matt Leinart is going to give you.

He is NOT going to come in and be the second coming of Tom Brady or turn into another Matt Cassell.

What you hope is that the Texans can go 3-3 at the minimum and get into the playoffs.

This is the greatest test this team will have ever faced and the fate of the team is now in the hands of the Defense and the Run game.

The rest of the team has to step up in a major way.

Schaub done for the season?

I’m still not too worried about it. People need to step back and realize that our team has a VERY stout defense, a VERY strong running game, and talented WR’s/TE’s that make big plays for us.

Will we look as good as we’ve looked the past 4 games? Probably not, but we’ve got 7 weeks to adjust for the play-offs. If anyone can get a fresh QB under control, it’s Gary QB Kubiak.

Relax, my fellow Texan’s fans. All is not lost.

Kubes apparently talked on 610

Transcript from another site:

At this point, we got all kinds of reports. Schefter reported Matt is out for the season.

Thats not our opinion as of right now. We’re in the process of him seeing some doctors in the next few weeks. He will miss some time. Hopefully we can get him back and we’ll keep our fingers crossed. He’ll be in a boot for a week.

When did this injury happen?

When we were inside our own 1 in the 2nd Q, trying to get room there, we ran QB sneak, it was a big muddle and somehow the pile fell on him. He got taped at half, he said he was fine. It was bothering him. They did X-ray after game. Showed nothing. Came back, got off plane, swelled up pretty good, did MRI, saw more and did a CT scan. As they progressed, didnt like what they were seeing.

If memory serves

Leinert resigned with us even though he could have had a better contract, because he liked our system, and especially because he really believed in what he was learning from Kubiak. I thought I saw some very good things from him in preseason. So, although I would much rather have Schaub in there, I am not overly concerned about Leinert. I dont think we need a great quarterback to win with this team. I think Leinert is good enough.

A guy in my office told me Leinart’s going to be a surprise. He was too immature in AZ, but he’s had two years to learn the offense and get comfortable here.

Wouldn’t have thought much of it but he told me two years ago to watch Foster, he told me OR would wax Stanford, told me to take the Under on LSU/AL, etc. He’s a good student of the game.

No worries, we got this!

The ’72 Dolphins, yeah the undefeated team, lost Griese for the season when he broke his ankle against the Bolts in week 5. An aging Eral Morrall, who was picked up off the waiver wire at the start of the season, came in to mop up the win. He went on to start 11 more games and win 10 of them. Shula replaced him with Griese when the O struggled against the Steelers in the AFC Championship.
Miami had Csonka and Morris who both went over 1000 yds, in a 14 game season. First time ever in the NFL. Foster and Tate are on par to do this. They also had Kiick who was a versatile 3rd down back with good hands. Foster and Casey.

They had a HOF WR in Warfield./ AJ. A slow possesion WR in Twilley./ Walter. A slot WR who could stretch the field in Briscoe,/ Jacoby. All they needed was a QB to manage the games.

Oh, and they had the top rated defense in the league. Sound familiar.

All Lienart has to do is get us to the playoffs w/o effing up. We get a 1 or 2 seed and maybe we get Shaub back in week 19 to finish this thing just like Miami did.
