Matt Leinart Speaks About Stepping Up In Wake Of Matt Schaub's Injury

I just came to post this.
Leinart sounds like he believes he’s a different guy than the first-round draft pick who did not pan out in Arizona.
He loves working with Schaub and has high praise for coach Gary Kubiak, offensive coordinator Rick Dennison and quarterback coach Greg Knapp.
"The quarterback coaching here is second to none, it’s unbelievable." Leinart said. "I think that’s why Matt has been able to be so successful and efficient for years now."
It’s demanding in a way he said is intended to bring out the best in a quarterback and that’s how it should work for him now that he’s older and more mature. His job now is to trust what the coaches tell him, manage the offense and be efficient.
He’s worked hard on his footwork, and it’s supposed to help steer him to throw the ball to the right place.
The offense should be the same, as he shares strengths with Schaub.
"That’s something I’ve always been comfortable with, in college we ran (bootleg) all the time, as much as we do here," he said. "And it’s part of the reason why I love this offense so much. At Arizona, we weren’t a big boot-action, play-action and boot-pass team at all. Obviously here with the way we run the ball so well, that’s a huge part of our offense and that’s something that I really feel comfortable doing."

I'm trying to drink the kool-aid. I'm seriously trying.
It’s hard for me to right now. Maybe after a week I can bring back that optimism I was feeling when I woke up this morning about the Texans.
I’ve slammed Leinart here in the past but I’ll be the first to sing his praises if he steps in and steps up.
Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.
This
Is exactly how I feel. I am trying to tell myself that we will be ok, but it’s a tough conversation right now.

Here's what we know:
1. We are still looking good for a playoff berth (our first ever) and should finish 4-2 (with just decent QB play) for an 11-6 record.
2. If Leinart completely shits the bed, Schaub hasn’t been IR’ed and there’s a good chance he could return for the 1st week of the playoffs (if he doesn’t need surgery).
3. We have something going this year that is not a fluke. A one and out in the playoffs would actually be something to build on.
4. We will finally get to see what Leinart has.
im probably being very optimistic but i do have confidence in Leinart.
In arizona he had no defense and no running game to go along with a coach not as established as Kubs in the QB department. He’s not gonna be Schaub but I do think he’ll show he can be a starting QB in this league.

I'm right there with you.
Until he proves me wrong in two weeks against the kitties, I’m confident (arrogant?) that he’ll be ok. i just hope and pray that Schaub has a fast and healthy recovery

I almost wish we weren't on bye so that the wait to see him in action..
..(and thereby assess that status of the rest of the season) wasn’t as long.

No way
the injury bye is at the perfect time.
He needs the reps with the first team, if in fact we practice this week. If we don’t, I hope he’s in every day with Kubes and Dennison.

I have faith in Kubiak. The guy knows how to move the ball.
It’s a longshot but I wouldn’t be surprised if our offensive production increased. Just like it did when ’Dre was out.
Kubiak will find a way to scheme with leinart and use his strengths. Plus he supposedly fits well in the system.
I figured that if I said it enough, I would convince the world that I really was the greatest.

I want to believe in your optimism. I really do.

We've been winning while only throwing the ball 15-20 times a game.
That’s what’s getting me through this so far. It’s not like our running game is a surprise to anyone. So Leinart just has to be able to keep the D honest, and Andre should help that a great deal.

I am listening to the podcast of Leinart as I am reading this
and I read your quote less than a minute before I heard him say it. Crazy coincidence.
Or was it?
lets face it
This season SCHAUB has not been schaub. His qb rating is high because he doesn’t HAVE to throw the ball 30+ times per game. As far as teams stacking the front to stop the run, haven’t they been doing that? Fact, this team is DEEP, like jenna jameson deep. While I am extremely bummed about schaub, I am still convinced we will be top 2 in the afc, and have another bye week coming our way.
by HTown80 on Nov 14, 2011 7:49 PM CST via mobile reply actions 1 recs
I have to agree with you
Jenna Jameson is deep. Oh, and the Texans will get a bye.
Swat and swim, dip and rip, twist and spin; just do whacha gotta do to light up that QB.
What he said about the bootleg is very encouraging.
That’s by far his most important job, besides just handing a ball of cleanly. Schaub is the best play-action QB in the league, that’s where Leinart will need to prove himself. I don’t care if he can’t throw a bomb, I don’t care if he can’t thread a needle with a football, I don’t care if he can’t scramble for five or ten, he just needs to be a damn good actor.
If and when he runs that boot,
he’ll be picking up 5 or 10 yards if nobody’s open. Not throwing it out of bounds like Schaub (not knocking Schaub, he’s just not as mobile)
Swat and swim, dip and rip, twist and spin; just do whacha gotta do to light up that QB.
Just as long as he remembers to slide
Nothing against TJ Yates, but I would hate to see TJ Yates playing a meaningful snap his first year…
nah
He needs to make good decisions, and throw accurately. In that order, that is the most important thing. The first one is TBD, and the second one is, from what I recall, the reason he was let go from the Cards.
Hopefully Kubiak has worked magic. But I’m cautiously pessimistic.
Luckily its the glitter kitties.

In Arizona one of the things he did pretty well was play fakes and bootlegs too
He usually seemed to do a good job at selling the fakes.

He said in a conference call today saying that when he played at USC, they did bootleg and plays action all the time.
He said he’s very familiar and comfortable with it and said Arizona did not use much bootleg/PA.
I know, I've been reading all of those articles.
Just going from what I remember from him when he used to play here.
Most of my memories of him playing are from 06 though. Besides that, there isn’t really a lot because of Warner taking over in 07 and the debacle with Whiz thinking that Derek Anderson was a better fit for the offense (what a load of crap that was).
Couple things that stick out are him jukeing Patrick Willis in 07, when he threw for over 300 yards in one half of a preseason game, and that game against the Titans where VY led the 99 yard drive with 2 minutes left.

From what I've seen, the Cards really don't use much PA?
Care to chime in on that?
I see them use it maybe a couple times a game
Mostly it is just faking the handoff, I can’t recall seeing any bootlegs this season. Usually, when Kolb or Skelton leave the pocket it is because they are scrambling around to buy some time.
It was used more often with Leinart than Warner though when they were both here. But both QBs were able to pick plays they liked to go into the gameplan, so it makes sense that he would do PA more while Warner was usually going with shotgun and spread the field stuff.

Nothing against Shaub's deceptiveness, but...
I think Foster and Tate are more the reason for our successful play-action.
Schaub sells it so well though
he makes sure his handoff action and his fake look almost perfectly alike.

Good point
I was telling my buddy the same thing. This is Leinart’s last chance to prove he can be a starter in this league again, so I’m optimistic he’s going to give it his all to prove he can. We went down this road before with Rosencopter and it didn’t work out so well, but in all fairness I don’t think he’s got near the skill set as Leinart.
The game plan won’t change. We’ll run the ball to set up the play action and boots. I haven’t seen a pass in our offense that Leinart isn’t capable of making, so it’s all on him. Let’s hope he shines.

They might not be SB contenders but Flynn has shown flashes every time he’s had a chance to run the offense, and with the weapons they have at WR I think they would still be competitive.

No worries, we got this!
The ’72 Dolphins, yeah the undefeated team, lost Griese for the season when he broke his ankle against the Bolts in week 5. An aging Eral Morrall, who was picked up off the waiver wire at the start of the season, came in to mop up the win. He went on to start 11 more games and win 10 of them. Shula replaced him with Griese when the O struggled against the Steelers in the AFC Championship.
Miami had Csonka and Morris who both went over 1000 yds, in a 14 game season. First time ever in the NFL. Foster and Tate are on par to do this. They also had Kiick who was a versatile 3rd down back with good hands. Foster and Casey.
They had a HOF WR in Warfield./ AJ. A slow possesion WR in Twilley./ Walter. A slot WR who could stretch the field in Briscoe,/ Jacoby. All they needed was a QB to manage the games.
Oh, and they had the top rated defense in the league. Sound familiar.
All Lienart has to do is get us to the playoffs w/o effing up. We get a 1 or 2 seed and maybe we get Shaub back in week 19 to finish this thing just like Miami did.

Reminds me of our Defense last year. The defense got a new coach in Wade Philips, and Lieinart has had a chance to develop by working with Kubiak for a few years. I think it’s reasonable to expect decent play out of him, especially since the rest of the team is playing so well.

He’s older than you’d want a QB prospect to be….has a history of injuries……arm strength is a question…..as is the fact that he hasn’t played top-tier competition and is in a friendly system.

The good news is

Before any of your fans go nuts sell stocks and buy bleach read these 5 things on why you should wait 3 weeks
1. Scaub was a game manager type this year meaning that is also Leinart role.
2. You have a bye week and play the Jags and Colts again I believe
3. Andre will help the passing game
4. You have a dominant running game meaning more exp for Tate and Foster meaning your defense will be well rested
5. If all 4 have failed realize the division you are in this year and that the Colts have a record which matches the coaching ability.
If this doesn’t help realize that Foster, Jojo, Tate, Dre is nearly all healthy and your coach isn’t named Caldwell.

I agree with you guys that his play will improve with the 1's
But his throwing mechanics & his pocket awareness didn’t impress AT ALL, I mean christian ponder was playing with 3rd stringers against us & he was tearing it up
Don't know what games you were watching then because he looked fine to me
He didn’t do anything spectacular but it was the preseason. Did I mention it was the preseason?
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Well I mean he's not curtis painter or blaine gabbert
So I still think we have a chance BUT his pre-season QB rating was 78.3 & his career regular season QB rating is 70.8 & that’s with a legit WR like Fitzgerald so we’ll see how much he’s learned from Kubiak & Schuab, well as of right now he’s what we got so let’s see what he can do, maybe he’ll prove me wrong
I know where you're coming from
I’m worried as hell but I also know we could be WAY worse off. If Kubiak is half the QB guru we think he is then we’ll be fine. Not great, but fine.
The playoffs may be a different story but I’ll worry about that if/when we make it.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I'm still in shock actually
After hearing about teh Schaub going down with a season ending injury & seeing it plastered all over espn depressed the sh*t out of me, I still refuse to believe he’s gone for the season, its just too early & it will help me sleep easier at night.
Same here
I’m holding my breath that we get a “6-8 weeks” update that’ll have him back for the playoffs.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I disagree to be honest
If Leinart can actually execute and maintain our momentum, it might be a disaster to put in Schaub after being out 6-8 weeks. So far it’s been pretty obvious that it takes 4-6 games for anyone returning from being out (injury, suspension, etc) before they are back up to full speed. I don’t think a QB is any different. If they are not taking snaps under center, and executing the timing, taking reads in live games with the rush in their face, it takes time to get back up and running.
Also, if you put in Schaub and he struggles due to being out and needing time, does it deflate Leinart and they both suck for the playoff game and we lose?
Probably not worth the risk in all fairness.
Yep
If the Texans win with Schaubby out for 6 weeks, it doesn’t make sense to rush him back in. Let him fully recover and go back at it during the off-season.
"All our lives we're taught to get in line. The ones who conform never discover." - Undrafted Free Agent and NFL Rushing Leader Arian Foster
If you listen to the Michael LaFlamme podcast,
you will know how much he raves about Shaub’s footwork in the run game. He presses the hand off better than anyone, which gives our RBs much more time to find holes. I don’t know if this ability would be there after 4-6 weeks of non weight bearing.
We'll agree to disagree then
I’ll take Schaub back as soon as he’s cleared to play.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Name a player who was out for 6-8 weeks and stepped onto the field
and performed like he was never gone. It doesn’t happen. There’s always a few games needed to get back into “football” shape mentally and physically.
That is why I am depressed
I still think we win the division and make the playoffs, but before the Schaub injury I felt we were legit SB contenders. Now I’m not sure we will make it out of the first round…
"Never underestimate the dumb with JJ" - Hugh Jarce
Other teams who felt the same way after losing their starting QB....
Patriots – Tom Brady stepped up and took over
Patriots – Matt Cassel stepped up and moved as starter to KC
Rams – Kurt Warner stepped up (after bagging groceries in a local market)
Ravens – Trent Dilfer replaced Tony Banks and took them to the Superbowl with the league’s best defense and a solid running game (sound familiar)?
I think Leinart is better than Dilfer was. I think Leinart is better than Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, Tim Tebow, Curtis Painter, and Blaine Gabbert but we’ll see for sure soon enough.
The list goes on and on. We have to have trust that the coaches saw something in Leinart and that he has matured and developed under Kubiak. I saw a highlight reel of him at AZ where he shredded the Packers with his arm for 3 quick TDs and no running game. Our system doesn’t rely heavily on the QB, so we should be fine. We have to trust in the “system” we have in place and that Leinart is ready to execute in our system.
He just has to run the offense and limit mistakes
Let the rest of the team win the games. Leinart shouldn’t have to push it to win.

Lisfranc joint injuries are rare, complex and often misdiagnosed. Typical signs and symptoms include pain, swelling and the inability to bear weight. Clinically, these injuries vary from mild sprains to fracture-dislocations. The incidence of Lisfranc joint fracture dislocations is one case per 55,000 persons each year. Thus, these injuries account for fewer than 1 percent of all fractures. As many as 20 percent of Lisfranc joint injuries are missed on initial anteroposterior and oblique radiographs. (Per AAFP.org)

I suppose Leinart...

Coin flip
Sorry but the following is from my Oilers and brief Titan fandom…
I think Moon broke his arm in Minnesota and returned six weeks later for the Wild Card game in Buffalo game. He was effectively tapping that ass until the refs decided it was OK to run out of bounds to get open and catch touchdowns.
THEN-
I believe Wade was coaching the Bills when he decided to replace his redhot Doug Flutie with Doug Johnson in Tennessee. Offense struggled, Jevon Kearse put one of the sickest hits I’ve ever seen on Johnson, Music City Miracle transpired, Bills lose.
QB play is vastly overrated
Only the Texans
could have one of their most important players suffer such an injury.
Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

He’s saying the right things. Just has to prove himself on the field. If indeed Schaub cannot play the rest of the year, he doesn’t have to throw 40 times to win games. Just win, baby

Can Leinart manage the game well enough to get this team to the playoffs? Sure he can…and it will be great to actually be there for once. We all know the defense and the schedule are going to make it worlds easier for him. But man, I had visions of first round byes and AFC championship games dancing in my head. The bye might still be obtainable, but the first foray in to the playoff for the Texans with Leinart at the helm is not going to be pretty.
Guess I shouldn’t be greedy and should just be happy to see the post season. I sure as hell wanted to be though.
Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it?

I would much rather have Schaub under center in the playoffs, if strictly for the fact that he’s got a much greater command of the whole offense.

Alright Leinart.
I’ve been hard on him calling him names and such. Well time to prove me wrong and fill the shoes of Schaub. He needs to throw passes DOWN THE FIELD and if can do so consistently the Texans offense will stay on track.
In Leinart I’m (forced) to trust. Also. Foster, Tate, and the defense will have to step up even more. Hopefully Andre will be back though. And maybe Danieal Manning.

It's not confirmed from Kubiak or the Texans because they are waiting on a doctor next week in hopes of getting a better result than season ending.
But based on the reported injury type, it is most likely season ending. Kubiak is hoping a doctor out there can say Shaub can return but when a coach comes on to the podium and says significant injury, it is most likely season ending.

Schaub has had a down year. If matty ice can put up average numbers we’ll be fine. Joneson, fostate, danielsen, vickasey, and our d will take care of the rest.
by HTown80 on Nov 15, 2011 12:41 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I agree
All things considered, if you HAD to pick one to lose would it have been Schaub or Foster?
Personally I feel Foster is delivering “#1 RB in the NFL” type performances, and even as good as Tate is, Foster can’t be replaced as easily. Schaub has been bouncing between “below average” to “average” all season. His lack of accuracy has been very inconsistent: too high, too low, behind, or into the hands of DL to get batted down. What he has been doing well is game management execution. The less he was throwing, the better we were doing overall on offense. I’m by no means saying he won’t be missed, but it could be worse in that we are not as dependent on his arm as other teams might be for a QB.
Knowing what I get in Ben Tate
I might go with losing Foster
by brightshinies on Nov 15, 2011 2:04 AM CST up reply actions
I get confused about all this "Matt Schaub is average" talk.
He ranks in the top half in all significant stats. That alone is better than average.
In most stats, he’s in the top third of the league, if not the top five.
I’d much rather lose Foster, but I’m feeling decent about Leinart.
by morecowbell-lesscowboys on Nov 15, 2011 9:05 AM CST up reply actions
This is all without having to throw.
Because of Fostate.
Schaub is the man. He’s showed toughness and leadership ability. Went a huge stretch without throwing an interception. Led the league in yards a few years ago.
I think the injury is on Kubiak’s call. I bet anybody’s foot would break in those circumstances.
by morecowbell-lesscowboys on Nov 15, 2011 9:07 AM CST up reply actions
Schuab was getting his shit together though
that with AJ could have led us to 12-4 and doing some massive playoff damage. We’ll see wha Leinart can do though.

This team will rally around Matt Leinart and continue to play good football.
Schaub is a good game manager but Leinart will extend and make more plays. This could end up being a blessing in disguise….

Credit to Rick Smith for getting Leinart re-signed this offseason.
He may not be Schaub, but I don’t see a better option for a backup we could have had. Anyone else and I’d fear our season is completely down the drain. Kubiak seems comfortable with Leinart, which makes me feel more comfortable with him.

Dalton is playing at a pretty high level, Fitzpatrick has had a drop off lately but he was on fire the first half of the year, and I’ll take Rivers any day.

“That’s something I’ve always been comfortable with, in college we ran (bootleg) all the time, as much as we do here,” he said. "And it’s part of the reason why I love this offense so much.
last game our boot plays weren’t that effective against jax, but since we will be going the opposite way most of the time now.. i’m excited about the big plays that can be had.
nobody is saying that we won’t miss Matt V1.0. but the more i think about it, the more i’m intrigued. here’s a guy with a chip on his shoulder something to prove an opportunity to change the perception of himself, and since Matt V1.0 has been fairly gimpy this year, i would imagine Matt V2.0 has been hyper aware of the obvious fact that he may be called upon to play. I look at it like this. as it is, the texans are like a fancy new plane. it would be awesome if you had a navy seals pilot, but a commercial airline pilot aint bad either.

I’m feeling a bit more confident in Leinart. A lot of those successful plays came on play action and rollouts in Pete Carroll’s West Coast offense….as opposed to his time in Arizona which was run in Ken Weisnhunt and Todd Haley’s craptastic scheme.

Not sure if this was asked as I have not read all the comments,
but I just would like to know how Leinart’s arm strength compares to Schaub’s. When you guys mention the guy has talent, what are these said talents? What are his strengths?
Nutt'd?
In practice with the 1’s Leinart has been more accurate than Schaub who has been off target since about the middle of last season (some of us suspect an unmentioned rotator-cuff injury). In pre-season, Leinart had the 3rd string OL (2nd’s were all on I/R) and didn’t have enough protection to show his ability.
He loves the bootleg and play action systems, and has thrown some deep passes in practice with the 1’s that actually led receivers vs Schaub who would often under throw them allowing the defense to catch up to them for a red zone tackle.
In AZ, Leinart was unliked by his head coach and was immature and forced to play a traditional pocket passer system without a good OL and no running game. He still managed to display some sparks of talent by shredding the Packers for three quick touchdowns in one game. I have confidence in Kubiak and that he has develoed Leinart to shine in this system. I know we all hope that is certainly the case.
Yep, just follow the recipe and it will work out

game manager
His completion percentage and rating really aren’t much different than two other qb’s whose teams have had recent sucsess, Alex smith and mark sanchez. He doesn’t have to win games. Just don’t lose them. He will have a much better running game as well as much better protection here than he had in arizona, and he has had time to mature as well as learn from a great qb teacher in kubiak. And as herm says this system fits his style much better.
