BREAKING NEWS: Jake Delhomme Signs With Texans

Adam Schefter tweets as follows:

Former Panthers and Browns QB Jake Delhomme reached agreement with the Houston Texans.

Normally, I'd mockingly remark that we're in big trouble if Jake Delhomme, QB3 for your Houston Texans, ever sees a snap of live action, but odds are that he's playing no later than December 11th in Cincinnati after T.J. Yates, Kellen Clemens, Cody Carlson, and Bucky Richardson are lost to season-ending injuries.

IMO

Unproven suck that somewhat knows our system trumps proven suck that couldn’t manage their previous systems consistently

by inktup on Nov 29, 2011 8:49 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

agreed...

…and it is WAY premature to be throwing around the “suck” in connection with TJ Yates, even speculatively. He came into his first NFL regular season game with no notice, having to run a two-minute offense and he moved the ball down the field. But for a questionable grounding call, he might have gotten 7 instead of 3.

In light of that performance and taking into account that the play-calling for the second half was wisely cautious, both to protect him physically and to protect a lead, I think that the evidence that is readily available on TJ is the epitome of anti-suck.

Meh.

I liked Garcia but the guy is 41 (one year younger than Favre (yep got Favre’s name involved)) where Jake is 36 I believe and since Garcia was tried out already can’t say I’m surprised they didn’t sign him.

Both have a lot of experience in the playoffs anyways so whatever.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Nov 29, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

True, but

Garcia has never had questions raised about his arm. Delhomme clearly was nowhere near the same player when he had his elbow redone.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Nov 29, 2011 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Really? Pretty sure Garcia's arm strength was a topic of debate several times when he started.

And again, we are talking about the 3rd string QB here anyways. Either guy works for me because they both have a lot of experience which is all the Texans were looking for. If we are talking about physical ability there are other guys I’d rather sign over both of them.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Plus there’s already a bit of a rivalry between St. Louis & Houston in other sports. Since we’re losing that rivalry in baseball, why not start it up in football?

I think last week there must have been a lot of pressure on Yates

when he came in during the first half. He looked pretty good. The second half as we’ve all talked about was about protecting Yates, the ball and the lead. So maybe we see more first half Yates.

I think this fanbase may be pleasantly surprised by Yates. I’m hoping for it. We don’t need a stellar QB, but I guess we had to find some depth somewhere.

Personally, I cannot wait to see Yates play Sunday. I think it will be exciting.

Bottom line is, If Yates goes down, it doesnt matter who else we have there (that was available) we will not win games. Said it before, said it again.

I am comfortable with TJ leading the team. Feel like this could be the rest of our season:

Week 13: Lose close game to Atlanta, TJ plays well but has a costly pick/fumble.
Week 14: Forced to pass more than expected, TJ performs admirably and pulls out a late win that is closer than many would’ve liked.
Week 15: Fostate runs all over the Panthers, Yates makes a dumb decision or two, we get the win.
Week 16: See above.
Week 17: Sitting at 11-4 with the division already clinched, many of the starters (perhaps not TJ) rest, despite the game being against the BESFs. We lose a close one.

This would have us at 11-5, and, assuming we finish behind New England and Baltimore, sitting at 3rd. I think New England will grab the 1-seed, and Baltimore has the tiebreaker I think, so I think they’ll squeeze ahead.

I’m projecting Pitt/Cinci at 5/6, so this would give us a date with Cinci in the first round, where we can finally pay them back for sitting their starters (from being too scared to face us) vs. the Jets in 2009, eliminating us. Like I said before, I think a TJ Yates-led offense could beat the Bengals, so we advance to play, most likely, Baltimore, where we lose a tough one.

I’d be okay with this.

I would rather have a 3 seed than 1 or 2...

I think a bye week is dangerous for us. I think our guys need to stay hungry. If this happens we could catch someone else sleeping in the second round. Like a Baltimore who has losses agains Jax, Seatle, and the tits

by Texan5513 on Nov 29, 2011 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Staying hungry isn't an issue.

Getting TJ( I hope) as prepared as possible for a single elimination game is.

All the jokes we’ve made about “high motors” over the years seem to have dropped off when we see what happens when Cushing is in on every play, watt has his hands in the air, barwin and reed making sacks… Our defense will stay hungry no matter what day you march them out.

We get the second seed, Baltimore third, and pitt sixth, and we assume Oakland beats Cinci (or whatever #4 beats whatever #5) then that would happen.

I'll say it

I’m concerned. If you thought they had problems running Sunday, wait until Sunday.

Outside of the intial two minute drill, they didn’t move the ball. Thankfully neither did the jags. We will have to beat the falcons(and probably the bengals) almost entirely through air. They’re both top 10(iirc) runstuffers and it makes the most sense to sit in the box literally all day against a rookie qb until he’s put up 2 more tds than you.

ya

but the players and Kubiak admit that their playcalling was focused around not getting Yates hurt and just putting the game on the defense. Last week’s second half was an anomaly. We’ll have a good idea of what to expect from Yates starting Sunday. I’m actually excited. I saw some flashes of potential with this kid. Here’s hoping for the best.

by wiseonekms on Nov 29, 2011 6:01 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Totally agreed.

The second half of last weeks game should not be considered typical. I don’t think the running game would have been any worse had Kubiak sent a runner over to the Jags sideline with the playbook and given Leinharts helmet to the Jags defense so they can hear the calls.

I don’t expect to ever see an offensive half of football to be more predictable than the Texans vs Jags, Sunday 27th 2011, 12:00pm (CST)

Quick slants to Andre

The one thing that stood out to me in TJ’s college highlights was the amount of quick slant calls they used. That used to be litlley Shanny’s favorite way to get Schaub going early. A few years ago that was almost always the first play call of the game.

So, if teams are going to stack the box it would be a great way to loosen them up. Not only to get TJ in a rhythm, but Andre as well. They’re high % plays that don’t require any time in the pocket and you let your best receiver use his athleticism to get YAC. Then you bait the defense for a while and call a slant and go for a TD.

He could be, but what I remember is that he never got an actual clean shot at being good. Delhomme – the hope is that his arm has healed. At one time he was an above average QB. Now maybe he’s just a warm body, but I’m going to trust in Kubiak et al, that they saw something in him.

I think if our Offense can put up more than 20 pts in this game we win.

Look at what Atlantas O has put up all season and against who. We have the best defense that they have faced yet. Couple that with our new QB throwing a pick 6 (or a turnover that ends up in 7 for them) and the match up between JJ and Kareem Jackson to me equals 17pts. Against the worst defenses they put up a little over 30 pts. I would put my money on Atlanta but i def. think this is a very winnable game in Houston.
