Injured Reserve, How Does it Work?

I understand the concept of Injured Reserve so far as it frees up a roster space for a healthy player to come into the team while the injured player rehabs during the season. That aspect of it I totally get.

However, for players like Lestar Jean and Roc Carmichael, who we all seem to generally agree are IR "Stashes" for next year despite not having season ending injuries, how does the process work?

Are they still allowed to get coaching from the Texans staff? Are they allowed to practice at all? Do they get to sit in on meetings? Or is it literally a wasted year for them from a football standpoint, where all they can do is keep in shape and watch film/study the playbook at home?

I've been meaning to ask this for a while, just haven't got round to it, but any clarification from the BRB community would be much appreciated. Thanks.
