The "Quarterback Problem"!?!

So now we've had a 2 game sample to look at what T.J. Yates brings to the table. Right now I am seeing,

Strengths

  1. good poise under pressure (in the pocket and out side)
  2. good accuracy in short the medium throws
  3. cool, calm, in-control
  4. relatively more mobile (maybe not as Vick, Tebow or Newton is, but still he can get a 3rd and 10 on his own)

Weaknesses

  1. over throws some simple throws
  2. misses to read open receivers sometimes

What is your assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of TJ?
And then, with Schaub coming back next season what should we do with our quarterbacks? I am sure Leinart will definitely be traded or let go. But how do we handle Schaub and Yates. Schaub will definitely have at least another 3,4 good years left in him and keeping Yates as a back up for that long will definitely slow down his growth. So what should we do? I am interested in your thoughts about this as well.

Poll
What do you think we should do?
Schub is the starter, no discussion, TJ can be the backup for a few more years aka Farve & Rogers. Any slow down in TJs growth will have to be taken in stride.

If TJ performs at the same level of better than Schaub in the next 4 games and the post season, we should trade Schaub for a early first rounder and get a WR to complement AJ

Schaub is still 30 and will have at least 5 good years in him. So lets trade TJ and get a great young WR of the future and grab a couple of 5,6,7 round QBs and groom them

Why not have both the QBs share snaps. One guy for one half and the other for the next half. This way we can get TJ snaps while protecting Schaub from any injuries.

you let whoever is in camp battle out for the starting position

i still say schaub will win but its good to have depth at a very important position. for now just take it one game at a time.

I agree

We still have three more games this (Regualr) season and somewhere from one to four games to play in January.

But I do expect to see Scahub battling with Yates next Preseason, with Scahub starting next season. Beyond that, I’m not sure though.

Battling it out

Let the young gun Battle, he doesn’t have the offense down like Schaub does, but he has more tools at his disposal then Schaub.

I think Schaub will win out the starter job, and then Yates will be needed and will never look back.

Yes I think Schaub will be injured, this is the NFL, and no I’m not calling him injury prone

Schaub is better

there probably won’t be a QB Battle going into next season anyways. But hey if Yates plays lights out and wins us a super bowl I. I don’t know who i would prefer.

How many years does Schaub have left?

I’m guessing he’ll start for sure next year, and depending on how Yates develops, he may take over a year or two after.

Schaub has one year left on his contract.

Now, maybe they would have talked extension this offseason, but that may be postponed.

lol I'd be shocked if it was anything other than the "Brett and Aaron" scenario.

Aaron sat for what? 2 years? 3? Yeah, I don’t think his growth was slowed. QB is so demanding mentally that sitting the first year or so is beneficial for growth because they can learn it without making mistakes and bad habits as they go (I’m looking at David Carr). The only thing Yates has on Schaub is a RPG for a throwing arm and a bit more mobility.

Given the fact that he knows some ins and outs of our offense from his time at UNC, by the time we do need him, it should hopefully be a somewhat seamless transition.

Thank God for football!

I voted other.

The only big drawback (that I noticed) for Yates on the depth chart was his inexperience. He stands to gain plenty more experience now as these games progress.

But there is no reason why both Schaub and Yates shouldn’t both return next season, save for some team offering us a dealthat we couldn’t refuse for Schaub- or perhaps even the off chance he ended up making demands.

Though, where will this team have holes next year? Holes that couldn’t be addressed on draft day? Both of these quarterbacks are such huge assets to the team, and both QBs would also be best served by returning to Houston in 2012.

If we tried to gauge Schaub’s personality, plus his health situation (teams might be hesitant to deal for him altogether and would likely send us lowball offers either way), any scenario where he makes trade demands so soon seems unlikely. I suspect that his foot will recover just fine, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have to prove to the league that it’s healed.

And l cannot see T.J. in any other uniform next season, no matter how this team finishes. He’s so young, and the Texans must realize that they have something good in him.

Quarterback depth is obviously a beautiful thing, and you don’t get rid of the useful ones unless you absolutely have to. They’re just too rare.

Next year is still way too soon to have to face that, IMO. T.J. still has his whole career ahead of him, which probably makes it difficult to get any type of fair return for him, as well. Where, exactly, is his ceiling?

In the meantime, Yates is the Texans starting QB right now. He’s not in a competition with Schaub; he just has to help us win that next ball game. Next year is far enough away; any starting QB battle would begin then.

If I had to personally make a guess about next year’s starter, today, I’ll take Yates to run with the role, and teh Schaub to be here for at least one more year. This time around, as the league’s top reliever.

What a great “problem” for us to have…

This is easy

Short of Yates winning the Superbowl, Schaub is the starter next year.

Shaub is in a no-win situation here

Really, the only thing they CAN do is open up the competition next training camp. I would expect Shaub to win said competition away from the cameras, but it won’t take long for him hear “TJ, TJ, TJ!!” the first time he effs up. Shaub isn’t fetching anything close to a early first rounder (he is on the wrong side of 30 and doesn’t have Brees/Brady/Rodgers talent).

Sharing snaps is just not going to happen, thank gawd.

by JMFC on Dec 12, 2011 6:06 AM CST reply actions

Absolutely, no sharing.

this one is easy

Schaub starts, Yates backs him up, and you let Leinart go in FA. Matt still has an experience edge and theres a risk of him getting hurt again so you want Yates there. In two years when its cheaper to release Schaub if needed you reevaluate.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on Dec 12, 2011 9:13 AM CST reply actions

We have a real issue at QB

Schaub has hit is peak. He has good elements and bad, but I don’t think we’ll see him do any better than he has done in the last three years. He’s “serviceable” in this system, but is aging and has no real upside to get to “elite” status. That may be fine for the next few years, but then what? What about games when we NEED him to pull out a game on his own talent while we have other stars injured?

TJ is showing typical rookie issues, but that tends to get cleaned up with experience, so he has upside to improve from his current ability. He’s slightly more athletic than Schaub and has a stronger arm. They both throw about the same in terms of accuracy (over or short), but TJ was hitting guys in stride pretty well the last two weeks which is an improvement to Schaub. We’ll see how he finishes, but at least there is more upside to TJ since he is “nearly” producing the same results as Schaub who was at his prime.

The reality is this is Schaub’s team and job unless TJ keeps rocking 300 to 400 yard games and pulls down some amazing results through the playoffs. At that point Kubiak and Smith will have some tough decisions to consider going into camp next year.

by MeMongo on Dec 12, 2011 9:42 AM CST reply actions

Schaub's team

If this team had large, gaping holes like we did 2-3 years ago, you may be tempted to throw Schaub on the trade block and give TJ a chance. With the current teams construction (very competitive/borderline elite) we need to continue with the QB who gives us the best chance to win now. AJ can only play so many more years, give him the best chance now and let TJ come through in 2-3 years.

Your comment on that post..

Are you referring to his having played in the Texans’ system in college, or something else?

But teh Schaub is still teh Man

Let us not get carried away. Leave that for the babbling hordes in the Comical’s comment threads.

TJ’s performance so far is gratifying and encouraging, but he ain’t no 4,000-yd, top 10 NFL quarterback yet.

by FreedomRide on Dec 12, 2011 6:21 PM CST reply actions

He doesn't have to be.

He just has to be the best option for this offense (in respect to a QB competiton).
