Open Game Day Thread: Panthers v. Texans, Fourth Quarter

would be better then pats (or ravens if it was a 3 way tie) because wed have less AFC losses

well

we still need to root for the pats and ravens to lose, beacuse that would STILL give us the tie breaker over them, since our record would be tied but our loss this week would be against the NFC and theirs would be against the AFC, thus giving us the tie breaker, so even if we lose, a loss by the patriots or ravens (or both) would still make this a good week

There's not doubt it was a team effort

But you don’t force a rookie QB to pass the ball so much when your running game is virtually unstoppable.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Considering the run game was non exsistent in the first half what do you want?

Run into a wall all day so you can whine and moan post game about how the Texans didn’t throw? The whole team got outplayed no need to make excuses. Yates had several throws today that if he makes them this game is different. He also forced two bad INT’s which was going to happen at some time this year that changed this game.

Only 5 fewer runs than passes. Players just didn’t execute enough.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Dec 18, 2011 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

I will NEVER whine about Houston not Throwing

They don’t need to throw the ball too much. Saying Yates should have made the throws or the turnout would be different is exactly what I am saying. He doesn’t need to be making the majority of those throws to begin with.

There is no doubt this loss is a team effort. But Kub absolutely panicked as usual when behind, and throwing the ball more often than not bites Houston in the ass. All it does is give the opposing team chance after chance to score again, and it removes Houston’s ability to control the game.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

Down 21-0 running the ball in the first half generated a grand total of 0 points.

Sorry but you can’t win every game running the ball (see last week). Yates has to make down field throws for the offense to work. Otherwise everybody clamps down on the offense (like teams have done the last 3 weeks) until they get burned by the passing game.

Texans offense is based on BALANCE. And it’s been that way since week one. The run heavy aspect comes from the second half of games where the Texans have usually had the lead this year (thanks to pass/run balance) but the playcalling is always centered around balance NOT running the ball all the time.

Today Yates,Foster,Tate, and the WR’s didn’t execute well enough. Drops, missed passes, and that fumble plagued them all day long. Panthers limited the Texans play count to (they had 130+ yards rushing) which also affected play calls.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Houston nearly ALWAYS LOSES

when they pass more than they run. Very few exceptions.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Very much a glaring statistic.

'Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.' -Frank Herbert

by chuckiepoo on Dec 18, 2011 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Unfortunately, very few pay attention to this

Go back and break down every single game the past two years, and there are less than a handfull of exceptions, nearly all of them explainable.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

Because when you pass you lose control of the flow of the game

Kubiak did this countless times last year. The team gets behind, he then launches an all out air assault. The results are always mediocre at best, and you give up control of the flow and the clock, and most of all YOU ALLOW OPPOSING OFFENSES PLENTY OF TIME TO SCORE AGAIN, which further compounds the problem.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Yes.

They key is to use the offense as your best defense. Keep the opposing offense off the field, keep your defense rested as much as possible for when they are on the field, and control the game flow. Houston could have easily won this game, despite the first half.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

Hoping you can keep up with tradiing TD's and FG's with opposing teams

and giving up control of the flow of the game will bite you in the ass more often than not.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

Burn the clock when behind as to not let the opposing team run up the lead. Slowly pick back at them with the best running game in the league, and keep control of the game.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

I guess what I'm saying

is the offense is your best defense when you have sucn an outstanding run game. Contol of the flow and the clock is the best way to keep opposing QB’s from burning you.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, but we needed three drives to tie the game.

If we go run-heavy we get three drives before the games over. This means we have to be perfect and stop them 3/3.

Also, the entire league disagrees with you. Most notably the Patriots.

by willieboyd on Dec 18, 2011 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Kub countless times last season

got behind a bit and gave up the best thing he had and started playing air games. More times that not, there were lots of 3 and outs, and things became totally unproductive.

This is Kub’s biggest fault. He panicks when behind and implodes with playcalling. He hasn’t done it much this year because Houston’s defense is so good, he hasn’t had much of a chance.,

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

..may have been the difference in the red zone. I have to agree.

Kubes has a couple of calls to offset this year though. Patience and battlin…

by chuckiepoo on Dec 18, 2011 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

Oh there's NO DOUBT

dude has improved this year. Someone or something got into his ass bigtime over the offseason. But he still craps out more that not when behind. The 4th qtr of the Saints game is the best example of this year. Although not behind when entering the quarter, Kub inexplicably started passing the ball and Breez got back on the field again and again and burned the team in a loss Houston should have and could have won.

No one ever sees this, as on the surface, it’s Brees is an awesome QB, what a comeback. But the reality is Kub allowed him back on the field due to his crappy playcalling.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

and failing to use his offense as his best defense to keep Brees off the field

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps to some degree

But fooling around with largely passing in the red zone with AF on fire, resulting in Field Goals instead of TD’s is classic Kubiak.

by SuperSerial on Dec 18, 2011 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Passing is so sexy and Kubiak is a passing coach.......

but Kub needs to run it down their throat in the red zone. He instead tries risky pass plays with a rookie/questionable QB which result in turnovers or FGs. That kind of playcalling was directly or indirectly related to about 7 of Houston’s 10 losses last year.

No need for that when you have a good O line and arguably the best running game in the league, two years in a row.

Exactly on Packers.

Don’t want to root for Debow, but despite today, I think that bye week and as much home field we can get will be really important getting as far as we can with this otherwise excellent Texans season.

Don't call us 12-4 yet.

Still could lose our last 2 games.

Fuck that game.

Is all I can say. We better play INdy tough, and come out aggressive. I knew that game would be a trap for us.

But you gotta give credit to Cam. I’m a fan, and congrats to him. I also like the respect the announcers gave us calling us “elite”.

We had damn well better STOMP THE FUCK OUT OF INDY Thursday and show it to the Nation.

by YohannDookeyblue on Dec 18, 2011 3:04 PM CST reply actions

Damn one loss and already a couple of dooms day posts.

Yates and the defense played sub par today. Irritating yes but the season didn’t just end. Texans offense needs to start faster and this is the difference between Schaub and Yates. He doesn’t have the same playmaking ability with his passes Schaub does right now and the offense is more sporadic with him under center.

He’s a rookie lets not forget this. He’s still developing ad this is one of those bump in the road games you’ll get with a rookie QB. Hopefully he’ll learn from his mistakes today and improve on them Thursday.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Yes they did but he had a bad game as well.

Two bad forced INT’s and he missed on way to many throws. Like the Wide open OD.

Lets face it. Yates is good but he’s not going to give us the offense Schaub was giving us the first 10 weeks. He’s just not on that level yet. Maybe he’ll get there by the playoffs but not right now.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Is anybody worried about the amount of turnovers we've had lately

I understand interceptions are going to happen when you play a rookie qb. But the fumbling has got to stop with our backs

by TheDream34 on Dec 18, 2011 3:26 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Mainly worrying about the fumbling issues that our backs have right now.

Seem to come at the absolute worst times.
Start of games while we are backed up or fumbling when we are about to score at the goalline.

Yes last two weeks teh turnovers have been plentiful and disturbing.

Both Tate and Foster along with Yates need to step up. I can excuses Yates both the RB’s are the strength of this offense right now and they are coming up short.
