Panthers -- 28, Texans -- 13: Post-Game Open Thread

Sigh.

Things we learned today:

  • Wade Phillips is very, very important to this team's success.
  • DeMeco Ryans is no longer an elite LB. (We kind of suspected this for a while, but the tackling today proved it.)
  • T.J. Yates is not, in fact, a god.
  • Jeremy Shockey is a worthless piece of trash who should be euthanized.
  • Cam Newton is legit.
  • FGs when trailing by 21 are not a great plan.
  • Neil Rackers is infuriating.
  • We will not be going 13-3 this year.
This is the post-game open thread. Discuss in the comments below.

Too many people with personal agendas and reactionaries after bad losses.

I told you TJ sucks.

That wasn't aimed at you.

I agree we should have run more in the red zone and we should have run against the Saints (because you pointed out to me). I don’t think we should come out running when we’re down 21 points, but we had a respectable exchange about it.

I guarantee someone calls for Kubiak to be fired, T.J. to be benched and predicts we will be one and done in the playoffs because of this game.

by willieboyd on Dec 18, 2011 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks.

I wanted Kub gone last year, but I think he’s learned a lot and improved this year. Not so sure that learning was voluntary, but it doesn’t matter. He is definitely doing better. I just hate to watch him coach when Houston falls behind, because it’s like a broken record every time.

Anyway, I am at peace with him now, but will unload on him if he relapses. I want this team to win so much it hurts. And I am totally cool with Yates. He’s got the world ahead of him. Just hope his youthful weaknesses can be coached around (oops, there I go again blaming Kub, lol).

Yep.

Thanks to that amazing defense holding the Rams to 17 points in a dome. And Adam making a clutch game winning kick.

But all that is nullified I guess because Tom Brady managed the game and didn’t make a game killing mistake and made a few throws on the last drive to win the game.

I guess we could look back and just pretend he threw 5 TD’s and had 416 yards passing and wasn’t a talented QB still in development that put together a decent drive to set up a FG.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

As much as us fans like to give all the credit and blame to the coach, there are so many people responsible from coaches to front office (and the Pats had a great one). Just scouting alone takes so many people.

We missed Wade and Dre.

TJ played well, He made a few bad decisions, and underthrew a bunch of passes. I still love his field presence and think he can win some big games for us.
TJ missed not having Dre this game. This is the kinda game where Dre manufactures an extra 100 yards of offense.
Defense missed Wade play calling on 3rd down. Wade has a better feel for the mind of the OC , thus Wade is better at stoping them.

If we have Dre and Wade we win. I think their precense would have avoided the collective egg our team just dropped.

I do not mind that they lost. That is for bandwagoners and team ownership to flip out over. I would be pissed if I was McNair. During the most positive , feel good week of Texans history, the ghost of old reared it’s head , and gave away another game.

T.J. for the interceptions?
Arian for the fumble?

Just booing because we are losing seems a little fickle to me, especially for a fan base that just watched a banner get hung.

Arian Foster fumbled, our rookie QB thew a Pick, and Rackers missed another field goal. The TEAM was playing but couple of mistakes by individuals gave us bad field position. I hate the term "fair weather fan"

First off for Texan fans there has been no fair weather before this year. Secondly, if they come out and look like crap then its a fan’s right to make their displeasure known. I don’t normally boo, but I wouldn’t tell others they can’t either.

I agree with this.

To be honest the team hasn’t looked very god the last 4 weeks and today the Team hit rock bottom.

Fans don’t want this year to be known as a “fluke” or a 1 and done. Texans have played below their talent level and it’s time they got back to that great football and stop the 2010 Texans routine of shit first half, furious second half comeback that comes up short.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

hey if you want to have unrealistic expectations

Go for it. Boo your heart out. Me, I see a banged up team playing their hearts out. Most teams lose games occasionally. I personally think its crazy to boo a team for a few individual mistakes in one bad half after a 7 game win streak. But you are right, I can’t tell people not to boo. Boo who away. For me, GO TEXANS! Get the colts on Thursday! I think they are doing GREAT for the hand they have.

I stated very clearly I don’t boo. I just don’t like it when people insult something other fans do because they don’t do it. And if you thought they “played their hearts out” in the first half, I dont know what game you were watching.

news flash!

Cam Newton is good and Wade Phillips makes a difference! You said most of the time you don’t boo (aka not clearly stating anything).. And it bothers me when my team gets boo’ed at the half after a 7 game win streak. I have a right to say I didn’t like the boo’s just like the people had a right to boo. So your arguments are all moot. Enjoy your evening and I will let you have the last word (if you so choose). I don’t like back and forths…

You absolutely have the right to not boo

Just like other people have the right to do so. I am not trying to argue with your stance on booing, just disagreeing with your calling fans who do “fair weather”. Their booing does not make them any less of a fan than you. You have a nice evening and holiday season as well.

Run game in the frist half, for the second week in a row, was terrible.

It didn’t open up until Yates started making throws down the field. You saw how the Panthers were clamped down on the run and short passes.

People need to stop expecting to win games running the ball 40+ times if you don’t have a down field passing threat.

Of course if worked with Schaub because the threat was there and teams HAD to respect that.

1. Short week, shake off the loss to an NFC team and move on
2. We miss Wade Phillips
3. We miss ‘Dre (and NEED to draft a big time 1st round receiver next year)
4. ’Meco is done. We talked about this at the stadium a bit. We love “captain”, but he’s done as a starter after this season.
5. TJ: “rookie doing what rookies do” and will learn from it.
6. Need better turf at Reliant….’NUFF SAID!

Cheers! See you all as we prep for Indy on Thursday, and THANK GOODNESS they beat the BESFs this week!

Nah, I can't.

but I think we still could have lost that game with Schaub, the defense was not good today.

by Toolshed1 on Dec 18, 2011 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

Well obviously that's true.

But the chance for the Texans to win would have been much higher if they had scored like they were with Schaub playing.

Perhaps the defense plays better if the Texans had gotten the lead and were able to run the ball consistently like they were with Schaub.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

I'm glad they play again on Thursday for that very season.

You should see some of the comments here lol.

A little to fickle here sometimes. I think to many people were expecting 13-3 although the team hasn’t looked good since the Bucs blowout (when Schaub went down).

Offense needs to get back to that consistency we had earlier in the year. QB play is up and down and the run game is come and go. Defense today and the first half last week has been, well, bad. And the turnover bug has hit the team with Fumbles and INT’s. Although the INT’s are expected Tate and Foster need to step their game up. Their fumbles have been real killers the last two weeks. We survived Tate’s last week but Foster’s was critical today.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Our turnovers have been killing us lately. Our receivers are not creating separation, we started off slow, we are not playing team football and we need to just fix those. A loss is the best thing for this team because it keeps us in check. So many teams laid an egg today and it’s usually how you react after a crappy game that can go a long way.

Things that worry me:

Turnovers. One of the best in the NFL at NOT giving it away as well as taking it away. Last two weeks this has not been the case.

Offense. Once a top unit in the NFL we still haven’t recovered from Schaub’s loss. Run game is nowhere near as good as it was with him and the passing attack is up and down. I have faith in Yates to develop though which should allow the run game to open up more.

Defense. WTF guys? Two horrible first halves in a row then the collapse after the offense made it 21-13 today.

Supposedly we can rely on our defense and run game to protect Yates but that hasn’t been the case the last two weeks.

I’m not particularly disappointed in the defense. What’s concerning is not scoring a point until midway through the 3rd quarter at home against one of the worst defenses in football. Our offense never put any pressure on Carolina, and hung the D out to dry with short fields all throughout the first half.

Gotta cut down on the RB fumbles and missed field-goals. Rackers’ inability to hit anything beyond 45 yards is starting to catch up with it, and those early fumbles are putting us in a bit of a hole.

The defense just was not the same defense. J Jo was burned all over the place

Yeah been a long time since I've had to deal with "Kubiak sucks" rants.

Which brings me to the offense. Since Schaub went down the Texans have averaged 17.5 points per game compared to the 27 points they averaged the first 10 games.

Not sure exactly what to pin it on but it’s probably a combination of things.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Dec 18, 2011 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yes in particular the Bengals game and today's game.

Our RB’s can’t be dropping the ball like that. Yates had two real bad forced passes which he will hopefully correct so I’m not as worried about those.

Panthers got 14 points off Texans turnovers today so that needs to improved ASAP.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Yea he has always held the ball in a way

that looks easy to lose but it hasnt happened until recently

by Biggity B on Dec 18, 2011 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

I think he said it best.
"We didn’t come out with a lot of energy," Foster said. "I take a lot of blame with that because when you turn the ball over so early like that, it kind of deflates the energy."

His fumble sort of sucked the energy out of the stadium and the Panthers turning that into a TD deflated the crowd even more.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Dec 18, 2011 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe this loss will be good

by Biggity B on Dec 18, 2011 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

Let's start with....

No veteran Matt Schaub back there. Yates can get the job done, but he’s not Matt Schaub.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Dec 18, 2011 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah he really was the heart of this offense regardless of what some say or think.

I think Yates can get us to 23-27 points per game if he could hit a couple of those plays he misses. They did a good job during the broadcast showing some of the throws he missed today like they did in the Bengals game.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Yeah?

Well, you’ve quit on this team so many times, even the ghost of George Steinbrenner thinks you are hasty. I bet you wish the Texans had canned Kubiak as quickly as your beloved Fighting Irish fired Ty Willingham.

I have not yet begun to defile myself.

Well that game sucked ass.

And as I have my first beer of the day (Yes, its 10:47pm, I did not even drink during the game) all I can think is “meh”.

We’re still AFC South Champions. The game that is really going to matter will be the second or hopefully third weekend in January.

Lets hope the Colts win out

We’re not gonna get a first round bye anymore even if the Ravens lost. We’re stuck with the 3 and the Jets most likely and that gives us a decent chance. What I’m more excited about however is the Colts winning another game. Anyone got tabs on what the “suck for luck” tiebreakers are like betwen the Vikes, Rams and Colts are like?

Swede that like the Houston Texans and Chelsea FC
