2011 Texans' Core Player (Plus A Very Cool Snapdragon Giveaway)

For eleven days beginning on December 18th, Qualcomm Stadium, football home of the San Diego Chargers and San Diego State Aztecs, will carry a temporary new moniker: Snapdragon Stadium. Snapdragon processors by Qualcomm are the digital brains inside mobile devices made by top manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Nokia, and HTC. Snapdragon Stadium will host the Chargers-Ravens game on December 18, the Poinsettia Bowl on December 21, and the Holiday Bowl on December 28.

Prior to the 2011 season, if you'd asked me who the most important player to your Houston Texans' success was, I would have answered "Matt Schaub" without any hesitation. That's not to say that I thought Schaub was the most talented Texan; that honor would go to Andre Johnson (though I'd listen to those who wanted to argue Mario Williams is the most talented Texan). I simply always thought that the Texans were doomed if Schaub ever had to miss an appreciable amount of snaps.

I was wrong.

Star-divide

After Albert Haynesworth injured him in Tampa Bay, Matt Schaub was placed on injured reserve about a month ago. Since that time, your Houston Texans are 3-1. Two of those wins came against playoff-contending teams, and the loss came to a Carolina squad that hasn't been an easy out for anyone all season. Although their starting QB was lost for the season with six games left to play, the Texans won their division and cemented a playoff berth on the Sunday of Week 14. I never would have believed that could happen without Matt Schaub, yet it did.

If Schaub isn't the most vital Texan to the team's success, who is? After what we saw on Sunday, I'd wager the overwhelming majority of BRB would say Wade Phillips, and I'd agree with you. But if you were going to limit the analysis to actual players, who would it be? Answer that question, and tell us why you answered the way you did, in the Comments below. That easy action could mean a brand new smartphone for you come the first week of January.

Want a chance to win an HTC Rezound powered by Qualcomm's revolutionary Snapdragon multiprocessor? Just leave a comment on this post with who you think the team's core player is and why he's so important to their success. Vox Media will select one winner from among the participating SB Nation blogs. All entries subject to the official rules found here .

No one player, but the best argument could be made for Cushing.

Core Player

Is a divergent tag, the core would be a group of players that make the nucleus of the team. Yet As my 2011 MVP would be Arian Foster

Division Champion Houston Texans
Wade Aid Is the Best Drink in the League.
The next time I read about our 3rd string QB, I might just Choke a Bitch.

This team has won games on days when Arian Foster didn't excel

The D has set the tone all season long. I’m not saying Foster isn’t valuable, but he hasn’t had an MVP season. Also, I when Foster has a big game, I want to give the O-line a heap of credit.

They would be more core

For the game is won and lost in the Trenches. The O line and our Front 7 have been the reason for success, this season.

I'm with rip in terms of there is no true core player that is responsible for how the Texans succeed.

However, if I were forced to pick one, my pick would surprisingly be Johnathan Joseph. When JJow is having a bad game, it seems like the secondary starts to have a bad game. From the first day he came in, the secondary has looked up to him as a leader and he brings swagger to that side of the field. When he’s locking down the opponents best receiver, it opens up the pass rush and also helps by adding a safety to help on the opposite side he’s working on. He also opens up the blitz package since we can send a safety to blitz. I feel that if JJow ever missed time, we’d be in huge trouble.

by Tony Ung on Dec 20, 2011 10:42 AM CST reply actions

Completely Agree

If I have to pick a single player, it’s Johnathan Joseph.

Significant drop off in talent in the secondary after him

Even with our ferocious pass rush, visions of 2010’s secondary would dance in my head if he was hypothetically out.

by brightshinies on Dec 20, 2011 11:09 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Aye.

I can live with one Kareem or Jason Allen in the secondary. When Joseph has somebody locked down, you can cheat a safety towards the other side and not get torched. But if Joseph goes out, you’re suddenly spread awfully thin. As bad as our injury luck has been this season, we’ve been very fortunate to have our most talented player (and at a key position) stay healthy.

Here’s to you, Joseph.

your offensive line

The best in the league and has been very good for a long time. watching them blow the defensive off the field time and time again and giving AF and BT some good holes.

by coltsfanbeforemanning on Dec 20, 2011 11:02 AM CST reply actions

so basic... yet true

it always starts in the trenches… i really think that is the key to your success. Giving your QB time to throw, giving him short 3rd downs, and opening up alarming holes for your RB’s. I am one of those people that feel there are few special RB’s and many very good ones. The very good ones look special with a great O-line.

by coltsfanbeforemanning on Dec 20, 2011 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

I would pick the the O-line as well

It’s been a true team effort this season, and what better way to say that than to select the only ‘team’ within the team that you can.

Seriously, You can’t pick the ‘receiving corp’ or the ‘front 7’. But you can pick the O-line.

I'd have to say Schaub as well. Someone should do a avg points/yards per game differential charts of our games with and w/o Schaub.

Include rush yards also please, certainly seems to me our rush yards are much harder earned than when Schaub was under center. Ben Tate has all but disappeared from the field because we been having to play catchup now and he is still terrible in the pass game.

DITTO

I was putting together an entry in my mind when I read yours. We blew everyone out of the water prior to him going out. His quick starts allowed the defense to be an enviable position and pin back their ears. Schaub much better than Yates. I saw the game in person and it allowed me to see what I can’t on TV. Open receivers everywhere, and Yates not getting to them at all or too late.

I'm going outside of the box on this one

Chris Myers has become the “core” player for the Texans.

Yes, I know someone’s snickering and remembering the birth of Ragdoll, but look at his role. Myers anchors the line and calls out protection schemes. In 2009 when he was hurt, the run game struggled….he’s been healthy the past two years and really turned into one of the game’s best centers (loved by PFF….FO cites Houston as 1st and 2nd in runs up the middle the past two seasons). He’s done a great job in both run and pass blocking….probably the line’s most balanced blocker.

Additionally, there’s the who is behind him factor. If he were hurt, who would replace him? A shifting from guard Wade Smith (who has really looked bad this year) or Antoine Caldwell? Does anyone believe they could keep the ship afloat?

No Myers = A Shaky Line.

I’m waiting though, to claim any kind of victory, because I have seen Yahoo change stats midweek before. This one is too close.

by Rip Jersey on Dec 20, 2011 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

I agree, but...
FO cites Houston as 1st and 2nd in runs up the middle the past two seasons

I think this is misleading.

With the stretch run, we get stuffed at the edges. Most runs aren’t designed to go up the middle, and when they do, it’s because the back saw a hole and cut. When no hole opens, the back doesn’t cut and ends up losing yards outside of the tackle. That’s why I think the tackles are as invaluable as Myers despite the stats.

by willieboyd on Dec 20, 2011 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

True

But it also does mean that the middle of the line is also doing it’s job.

And, forgetting statistics, Myers has had to be surrounded by Smith and Brisiel….and both have not heard many cheers here for good play.

I'd go with Chris Myers.

It should really go to the whole offensive line, but I’ve thought that the center was a vastly undervalued position on the O-line. Myers may not be the best individual blocker on the line, but he’s the glue that lets them work as a team so well.

Also, damn you TDC, I wanted to be the first one on the Chris Myers bandwagon.

I am going to reach for J.J Watt. I think he will take his game to another level as he gets into his offseason training regimen and comes into next season bigger and stronger, and with a season of experience behind him, I think he will flourish next season.

I'm just giving him my preseason vote

The rest is up to him. But, he has already flourished this season to the point where he is roundly acknowledged to be a very good player and he has made a difference. He has made timely tackles behind the LOS, he has knocked down passes, he has been very effective against the run, and he has demonstrated some pass rush moves. He really doesn’t appear to have any chinks in his game. I think he can only get better with a season of maturation and working out to gain more power.

Anyways, I see him as a difference maker on a defense that is filled with difference makers and I’m giving him my nod.

I do not know if Yates makes the minimum or not, but my first inclination is that he probably does.

Foster was actually a coveted undrafted rookie.

Usually, an undrafted rookie will get a one year contract for the league minimum. I don’t remember if his contract was for the league minimum or not, but I do remember that we had to offer him a two year contract to get him.

I don’t know what 5th round draft picks get, but there’s at least a small chance that Foster is making more.

There’s a significant drop off from Schaub to Yates. As much as I love Yates, you’re seeing the team struggle to get out to a quick lead.
