NFL Playoff Picture: AFC South Champion Houston Texans Lock Up The 3 Seed
Your AFC South Champion Houston Texans may not be playing in today's Christmas Eve games, but they have locked in their playoff seed for their first trip to the postseason.
By virtue of wins by the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens plus the loss by the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos, the Texans will be the third seed in the AFC when the playoffs start in two weeks. Houston will host a wild card weekend playoff game at Reliant Stadium against the sixth and final seed.
Currently, the sixth seed is held by the Cincinnati Bengals (9-6) by virtue of their win and the New York Jets loss (8-7). However, the Bengals, Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers (eliminated with loss to Detroit) are all eligible for that final playoff spot. A Bengals win over the Ravens will send them to Houston, but a loss opens up the door for a lot of scoreboard watching.
Who would you like to see in Reliant Stadium? Who would you hope stays home? Sound off in the comments.

Jets or BESFs I guess

Steelers and ravens are 11-4 and a steelers win and ravens loss would make pitt 12-4. Were no better than 11-5.

He's 100% wrong.
Baltimore and Pittsburgh are 11-4. If they both lose then Baltimore wins North at 11-5…..even if we are 11-5, they won on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Pittsburgh can only win the AFC North at 12-4 and a Baltimore 11-5……we can’t catch that.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Actually you're 100% WRONG
If both PIT & BAL lose and HOU wins, they would all have the exact same record. BAL would win the AFC North via head-to-head tie breaker. However, when determining playoff seeding, it does NOT take into account H2H. First tie breaker is DIV record…..BAL would be 5-1, HOU would be 5-1. Second tie breaker is CONF record…..BAL would be 8-4, HOU would be 9-3….so if we win and both BAL & PIT lose, we get the #2 seed.

Why would it go to division record between two teams in opposite divisions?
The first tiebreaker is always head-to-head between two teams. Always.

lol read through some of the aftermath I decided to skip out on from the loss.
How sad.
Anyways…I’d say Jets but then Sanchez in the payoffs makes me nervous. Chargers are getting blasted so I’m going to disregard them. Titans…well lets see what happens next week.
Bengals are the worst match up for the team up there is definitely don’t want to see them. I think the Raiders are the weakest of those teams so I’d go with them.
But to me it’s irrelevant at this point with an offense scoring 17 PPG. Unknown if AJ would change that or not but this offense is hurting with Yates at QB right now. We might need AJ more than ever before.
Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.
The Raiders are likely to win their division if they are to get in

From Yahoo!
6. Cincinnati Bengals (9-6)
Would clinch a playoff berth with a Week 17 win but have the worst strength of victory (44-90) of any team that could finish 9-7.
Next: vs. BAL (Jan. 1)
IN THE HUNT
7. Oakland Raiders (8-7)
Lead the Jets and Titans for the No. 7 seed due to better strength of victory (52-65 vs. 47-71 and 45-75, respectively). Would clinch the West and No. 4 seed with a Week 17 win and a Broncos Week 17 loss. Also could clinch playoff berth with a win and a Bengals loss, but not if both Titans win and Jets lose.
Next: vs. SD (Jan. 1)
8. New York Jets (8-7)
Lead the Titans for the No. 8 seed due to better strength of victory (47-71 vs. 45-75).
Next: at MIA (Jan. 1)
9. Tennessee Titans (8-7)
Would clinch a playoff berth with a win and Bengals loss and Raiders win and Jets loss due to a better record in common games (4-1 vs. 3-2).
Next: at HOU (Jan. 1)

1. I don’t think the last two weeks has any indication of how we will play in the playoffs.
2. Overall, we have a better team than all of the possibilities.
3. Our cornerbacks, including J Jo (but maybe not Allen), are weaker against deep routes than other routes.
4. I think the only way a team transcends the talent gap is through big passing plays.
Therefore, I want to play:
1.Tennessee Titans
2. NY Jets
3. Cincinnati Bengals
4. Oakland Raiders
5. San Diego Chargers
Regarding #1...
1. Overall, I think our focus and effort has not been 100% since we clinched a home playoff game (after the Bengals game). This goes for coaches and players and doesn’t just mean the game it also means the other 6 days we don’t see.
2. Gary has reverted to a vanilla offense to protect against scouting. T.J. and Gary have decided to dump it off earlier to protect T.J. (our only QB with more than a few months in the system) from injury.
3. Defensively, we miss Wade.
I am confident that 100% focus and effort for a week before the game, a full offensive game plan, the return of Wade and the return of Andre will add up to a completely different outcome than we’ve seen the last two weeks.

I do not think that means what you think it means
on point # 2 – it wasn’t to protect against scouting. It was because our pass protection was shit, and he didn’t want TJ killed.
I am not confident that we can sort out our offense in the next two weeks. The run game worked well early because the pass was so effective. And vice-versa (along with teh Shaub’s sick bootleg). Now – we have no pass game, so teams (like Indy) are using their “jumbo” package at the line and stacking the box with 8 men. We can’t run, we can’t throw – our offense is shit. And we go 1-10 on 3rd down conversions.
I don’t see a magic bullet teaching TJ to make reads in 2 weeks.
I think Kubes’ fault is that he has too much faith in people. He needs to be a dick and tell TJ he’s not battlin’ hard enough, and swap him out.
I think this is only partway true
I think Kubes wrote up a gameplan that was conservative (and I think it was for scouting), but I also think he thought it was enough to win. In a perfect world it might have been, but then there really bad zebras, and the O line underestimated Indy (or just plain sucked). The result was that his underwhelming gameplan failed and we lost embarassingly.

I'm not sure it was that embarassing.
The Colts have been playing a helluva lot better lately. And a win didn’t mean that much to us.
Chargers are out. And I am glad.
Would not want to face them.
Jets have postseason experience and Revis to lock up AJ.
Raiders have a good D. Might have RunDMC back?
Cincy is okay, but I think we beat them in our home.
Tenessee will lay it all out next Sunday, and we will play vanilla. Possibly losing.
So…
1. BESF’s
2. Cincy
3. Raiders
4. Jets
5 Chargers – but I think they’re eliminated now.
by YohannDookeyblue on Dec 24, 2011 7:30 PM CST reply actions
The Jets D scares you more than AJ Green?
I couldn’t decide.
Big plays by the opposing defense would be devastating, but I think a run-heavy, field position game with the Jets would be an easy win. The Jets offense is putrid.
Oakland scares me because their D practices against the ZBS everyday and their overall speed scares me (especially if McFadden plays).
left them in the punch bowl??

I know alot of you want to see the jets.
Not me for a couple of reason, they have 2 good WR’s in plax and holmes. Whichever one gets jackson could have a career day. I think we could get to sanchez but he seems to have that it factor. It being either good or bad. I really hate to see any of these teams, Is Mcfadden back for the radiers? We saw what their front line did to our O-line. I think it could all boil down to who is going to cover andre doing the playoff, cause rest assured he is about to go into beast mode.
you just know he is about to go off.
That is why i dont want to play jets because andre wants to off but with a rookie QB throwing to revis side, i don’t like at all.

Well - I don't know about everyone, but here's my take
Pretty unhappy about the Indy loss. For multiple reasons. First – offense was pretty poor the entire game. Foster ran well, but when you are 1 dimensional, it’s pretty easy to shut down the offense. Indy successfully did it. Plus – when you are 1 for 10 on 3rd down conversions, your defense is on the field a lot!
Speaking of which – our D was gassed at the end. With 2 minutes and no time outs, Indy was able to drive the field and score. Of course – that was helped by some especially shitty officiating, but that aside, the D has to make some plays (knock down a pass, don’t let someone out of bounds) and the game is ours.
So – like I said, damn disappointing.
As far as matching up with the Titans next week – we’ll see. We aren’t the same team that played you in week 7. I think we are really missing Matt Schaub, so offensively, I don’t see us hanging a lot of points. Plus – last time we played you, our offense controlled the clock almost the whole game, allowing the D to tee off on you guys. If our offense isn’t moving the ball, then the D will probably get gassed, allowing you guys to rip us apart with run/pass.
I don’t want to see us lay the 3rd egg in a row, but our offense has not given me anything to cheer about over the last two weeks.
I doubt we play many starters
We can’t move up or down in seeding.

But we need CIN to beat BAL and CLE to beat PIT…..CIN win is possible…..CLE, not as likely. And for those that haven’t looked at NFL tie break rules….let me quote myself:
“If both PIT & BAL lose and HOU wins, they would all have the exact same record. BAL would win the AFC North via head-to-head tie breaker. However, when determining playoff seeding, it does NOT take into account H2H. First tie breaker is DIV record…..BAL would be 5-1, HOU would be 5-1. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t affect our season in any meaningful way.
And I couldn’t disagree more with it “doesn’t matter who we play”. It is the biggest game this franchise has ever even SNIFFED. It matters. It matters a lot. We need to win a playoff game. Offense needs to come out and be dominant in the first half. Utilize ‘Dre as much as possible (within reason, for hamstring issues) to help him mesh up with Taylor Jonathon before the play off game, and to, literally, get his legs back. Have Fostate grind out 150 yards in the first 30 minutes. Allow the BESF’s offense on the field for only 8-10 minutes.
We should develop a 3 score lead going into halftime.
In the 2nd half use 80 sporadically, but don’t let those hammies get cold. Start bringing the Glacier in for more plays as well as the Dopplegang. While we still have a dominant lead in the 4th quarter, start playing The Deli behind center, have B. Johnson, Maehl and Casey see more action as well. Don’t gas our defense and allow for more injuries.
We keep our starters in sync (insert boy band reference here), get the back ups more playing time, (hopefully) avoid injuries, gain momentum going into our first play off game, and keep the boo birds away. (Personally, anyone booing at a game in Reliant is not a fan in my opinion, but to protect the fragile psyche of Cushing I would prefer that no one found “reason” to boo.)
Not only do we have momentum, we also have any fairweather fannage on our side in the home play off game.
As posted by others, I don’t really have a preference on who we play in the FIRST play off game. Any Given Sunday Theory…

Thanks, Dream, lol
But I have known for a while. I was just attempting to be witty with a little word-play (i.e., baby sitting easter fuckers). LOL, thanks for playing along!

who has the worst run defense and worst overall receiving corps?
Titans come up first on both counts as far as I can tell. Jets could be a horrible matchup for Texans. Give me Tennessee

Shocked how many of you want the Jets
But considering we need the Texans to win….I hope Gary Kubiak is thinking the same
