Wade Phillips: Brian Cushing Is "A Holy Phenom"

After practice today, Wade Phillips had a few choice words about a Pro Bowl that won't feature Brian Cushing:

"They don’t see how many plays he makes that are unseen, unless you put the camera on it, slow it down and go in slow motion," he said. "He’s there – boom – making plays. I know a lot of people are deserving, but that guy’s a holy phenom now. He’s one of the best I’ve coached, and I’ve been at it a long time."

BFD said it best about the "[t]hey don't see how many plays he makes that are unseen" line Wade fired off:

Was that Wade or Yogi Berra?

Kubiak said Johnson looked good, and the evaluation will be ongoing this week before a decision will be made as to whether the All-Pro wide receiver will receive any repetitions against the Titans. But the coach definitely sounded encouraged.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8180cb8d&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Excerpt—According to Brandt, Cushing must play 80 percent of the Texans’ defensive snaps and make the Pro Bowl in three of the first four years of the contract to trigger the escalators. He reached both of those goals as a rookie in 2009, but his four-game suspension disqualifies him from next year’s Pro Bowl and makes it highly unlikely that he will reach the 80 percent mark in total plays in 2010.*

Doesn’t say anything about after the 2010 Pro Bowl. I think the NFL restricted Pro Bowl access to PDA violators after Merriman made the Pro Bowl the same year he sat out a quarter of the season for a similiar offense. That’s all recollection, so it may be wrong; I couldn’t find anything to support it…

Damn you vile woman, you've impeded my work since the day I escaped your vile womb ...

by JMFC on Jan 1, 2012 6:01 AM CST up reply actions

I believe that is only the same year

The year of his suspension, he was ineligible for any league honors. That’s what I remember reading when it happened.

Also, he did not test positive for any performance enhancing drugs, he tested positive for a banned substance. Semantics, I know but that is still important.

I think most fans , including myself, did not vote for Cushing

due to the questions of him and steriods from when he won the rookie award. This is from a article I read earlier when i found about it. The part I chose was from a unidentified GM commenting on him.
"We did our research on him before the draft last year and we concluded he was a chronic steroid user dating back to high school," the GM told George. "More than a few people were surprised when he passed the steroid tests at the combine. I think the guy became a pro at masking it, until he was caught. I definitely would have taken my vote back on that award if I had one." Here’s a link http://www.opposingviews.com/i/brian-cushing%E2%80%99s-steroid-use-dates-back-to-high-school

So I'm an idiot

solely based upon the fact I’m skeptic about a guy who has a history with possible steriods in his system?
Dave, who knew Cushing in high school said, “I knew this kid in high at Bergen Catholic. His Freshman year he was about six-foot tall and 170 lbs soaking wet. He came back for Sophomore year about 6′2″ almost 220. For those who said DeFrancos did it, (the weight lifting/strength coach Cushing worked with) you’re a ******* idiot, this kid has been using it on and off since HS. Don’t get it twisted, he always had talent, but you don’t gain 50 ******* pounds over a summer.” When you here people telling theses stories you can’t just regard it just because you can or the fact that other players may have banned substances making it neutral or else it shows your knowledge or lack of. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/389782-does-the-s-at-usc-really-stand-for-steroids-how-far-does-it-go

NFLPA actually has a legit gripe with the HGH testing

the “naturally occurring” sample comes from athletes in other sports and non-athletes rather than using a sample of football players. While I can’t say for sure, I’d assume that football players tend to have more natural HGH than most normal people and other athletes.

if anyone here remembers..

there was a lot of negative criticism and the general consensus among Houston fans at the beginning of the season was that Cushing had lost his speed and was “never going to be the same”

I don’t want to sit here and say “I told you so,” because it’s great for all of us Houston fans that he’s back and better than ever.

The mounting adversity he came over this season to be where he’s at right now is nothing short of spectacular, and he’s just getting started!..Here’s to the best ILB in the AFC right now and for years to come!!!

This could be a blessing in disguise

This is going to put even more motivation into the guys like Cushing, Barwin, and Brown heading into the playoffs. Hopefully in the second round when we play Baltimore, Cushing shows Ray Lewis who the best linebacker in the afc really is.

the pro bowl decision making process is a joke to me.

I think Ray Lewis is an all time great, but no way he deserves to be there over Brian Cushing this paticular year. Fans don’t know anything other than a “name”. Not to mention none of them pay any attention to the Texans outside of us. I also think Duane Brown’s snub is just as bad. This guy may have been the best left tackle in football this season and they put d’brickashaw Ferguson over him. Laughable you idiotic fans and even worse the nfl coaches who should know better. Oh and let’s not forget Pouncey over Chris Myers. I’ve never looked at a pro bowl selection as a determining factor for a player being pro bowl caliber. In my opinion these are Texans who are pro bowl caliber yearly and for the future.

Duane Brown
Chris Myers
Eric Winston (when he isn’t getting beat in pass protection)
Arian Foster
Matt Shaub (when healthy)
Andre Johnson (see above)
Owen Daniels
Mario Williams (if still here in 2012)
JJ Watt (for years to come)
Brian Cushing
Connor Barwin (just getting started)
Johnathan Joseph
Glover Quin (not this season, but getting (there)

So there you have it. It’s not about getting an invitation to Hawaii, It’s about performing like an all pro every season. We Texans fans know what we have and I think that’s good enough.

Helluva team,

but does it have the right HC to win a title next year? I wish I thought so, but I don’t, alas.

by FreedomRide on Dec 29, 2011 6:55 AM CST up reply actions

The Pouncey thing is baffling.

“He’s on Pittsburgh and I’ve heard of him before, thus, he must be the best center in football”.

Meanwhile, Myers has allowed one sack all season, and the Texans are 2nd in YPC rushing up the middle. By no metric is Pouncey even half the player that Myers is. I understand the ghost of Ray Lewises past getting voted in. I understand Joe Thomas making it ahead of Duane Brown (he is still the best in the league in pass protection, despite playing with very little talent). But this reputation for excellence that Pouncey seems to have developed in a short time despite never having been better than mediocre is beyond me.

The sad part is, he’ll probably make the next ten straight pro bowls now if he manages to stay relatively healthy. Pro bowl selections beget more pro bowl selections. I’m not all that frustrated with Myers not making it, but I am bothered by this Pittsburgh hype that makes them think all of their players are the best at their respective positions.
