Listen live to Kubes' presser here. Good news on 'Dre, and Brian Cushing apparently just has a sore knee.

I hope we get him back next year.
Punters are somewhat disposable, but Hartmann is a freak with a long career ahead of him. There’s potential for him to be ready for training camp next August because this was his plant knee (left) and not the power leg… perhaps with a brace for added stability.
Get well soon, Brett!!

Well hamstrings have been one of the stories of the nfl due to the lockout.
Patrick Willis go hamstrung yesterday. We can take the good and the bad. Look at how well the strength and conditioning staff got Danieal Manning back to game shape.
hell ya man.
Real tough luck for Hartmann. He was looking awesome this season. I see no reason for the Texans to cut him loose due to the injury. He was fitting into the culture here, has a future in the NFL with his power. Here’s to a speedy recovery.
I don't know that you can tag the strength and conditioning folks for Hartmann.
From the replay I saw yesterday, he was running downfield juking back and forth trying to decide which way the runback was going to go, and it appeared that his cleat got hung in the turf as he was trying to juke. More of a freak accident.

And you can complain that our field should have more consistant density, but people arent dropping like flies in oakland every year. And that, by far, is the worst field in the league. Srsly, a fucking baseball diamond?!?!

and this shit has been going on for too long. Belichick bitched about it when Wes Welker tore an ACL/MCL on it back in 2010: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/01/05/belichick-wary-about-field-conditions-before-welker-injury/
I’ve seen it shredded after High School and College games for a few years now, and I’m pretty damn pissed that it’s ending games and seasons for Texans players. WTF is going on over there with Reliant?!!!
We didn’t collectively spend over a BILLION dollars for the NFL to return to Houston so that High Schools, Colleges and Monster Truck Jams could fuck up the field conditions and put Texans out of games.
by MeMongo on Dec 5, 2011 4:31 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
I'm no fan of Belichick, but I have to agree with his statements here...
“The turf down there is terrible,” Belichick said. "It’s terrible. It’s just inconsistent. It’s all the little trays of grass, and some of them are soft and some of them are firm and they don’t all fit well together, those seams. Some of it feels like a sponge, some of it feels real firm and hard. One step you’re on one, the other step you’re on another. I really think it’s one of the worst fields I’ve seen. […]
“I think the worst thing for a player is when it’s inconsistent,” he said. “When you take one step and you get one feel and then the next step is a different feel, or like you have some of the old Astro Turf fields, all the seams where the zippers would come up and the turf would start to turn over and you’d trip over it or it would give, you think you’re going to plant and it’s going to hold and then it gives, that’s a problem. Or you think it’s going to give and it doesn’t, and then it grabs. And that’s where a lot of non-contact injuries occur. Like, for example, the one we had on Sunday, which was a non-contact injury.”

So ahh, just how many F-ing non-contact injuries do we need before somebody fixes the turf at Relaint?!!!
known non-contact injuries due to inconsistent footing at Reliant:
Wes Welker – out for the season in 2010 with ACL/MCL
Andre Johnson – right hamstring (surgery) 6 games, 3 quarters missed, left hamstring (day to day)
Brett Hartmann – out for the season with torn ACL
Brian Cushing – left game after slipping and injuring right knee, returned to finish game
Tony Gonzales – missed time in the game after slipping awkwardly on Reliant turf
Just how many players have to get hurt before this insanity stops at Reliant?!!!! Seriously, either put in artificial turf or open the roof full time and install a proper grass field.
Several other players complained about it afterward

REPLY FAIL
I didn’t realize this had been covered….Note to self, skim down a little before replying….
I'm questioning strength and conditioning staffs league-wide.
Tendon and ligament injuries are off the chain. I heard a sports surgeon say tendon-detaching pec injuries like Mario’s and quad injuries like Sharpton’s used to be very rare in football players, and were seldom seen except in wrestlers and weight lifters. Now, they’ve become common in the NFL and college football.
Are players getting too strong tor the things that hold their muscles to their bones? You can’t strengthen those things with lifting and workouts, can you?

The bigger, faster, and more powerful the athletes get
the more injuries you’ll see.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
This I agree with. If you put too much muscle on a tendon and it tears it from the bone...
they need to consider flexibility improvement, and over development of muscle on many players.
I saw a medical article about this sometime.
I don’t remember where or when so don’t even know WHERE to start looking, but it said exactly that, the human body’s tendons and ligaments can only take so much pulling on them before they start to tear. So the more muscle and power the athletes gain and apply to those tendons and ligaments…..something’s gonna give.

did anyone hear Kube’s analysis of Kareem? Player of the game. EXACTLY. chill out everyone, he actually made a good play on that final play. He hooked his arm and yanked it. Also, that 20 yard pass to Julio, he was right there, it was just a perfectly thrown ball. Give the dude some credit man.
by wiseonekms on Dec 5, 2011 3:57 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
I'm one of Kareem's toughest critic lately but he had a good game yesterday.
From yesterday’s game, I think our secondary struggled a bit because of the match up with White, Jones and Gonzalez. Even JoJo seemed to struggle and be out of place a bit. In the end, they came up with the plays that wins you games. Kareem was in a position to make plays on the ball and actually turned around to locate the ball which he has never really done before. Cornerbacks will get burned on plays occasionally especially to elite receivers but as long as I see a cornerback try to make a play, I’ll take getting burned once in a while.
The sideline play was a good adjustment
But he had some horrible horrible plays as well. Getting burned bad by Julio. Then the blown coverage by him costing us a touchdown. And the last play was Julio trying to cradle it into his body. That’s why he dropped it. No reason it should have been left to kareem to stop that play though.

by Rocket94 on Dec 5, 2011 4:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
ya
I looked at that play a couple of times. Jones was in triple coverage, Kareem was yanking his arm, and had Julio gained even mild possession of the ball, Demps was right behind him with his helmet staring down his right arm. Even if he found a way to ‘make the catch,’ it was gonna be ugly for Julio either way.
Oh, and remember how many of us wanted Julio this year in the draft? Um, thanks Rick Smith for JJ Watt. So glad we made the right decision on that one.
Quinn shouldn't have been so shallow either
Thank you ____ (not sure which deity to insert). Ya I’m okay with not giving up half of our draft picks to get him. This next draft should be a good time to get a receiver though.

Lestar Jean, he impressed me in the preseason.
Beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore
While I'm happy with our draft picks
I have to say that I think Julio is doing pretty good for a rookie. Had we not needed the defensive picks we did, I would have been perfectly happy with him.
If everybody was somebody, then nobody would be anybody - Gilbert and Sullivan
I've seen similar assessments of Kareem's play elsewhere too.
Color me surprised. I thought, at best, he had a very up-and-down game. More realistically, I thought he was awful (especially in the fourth quarter) and was bailed out by the fact that Julio Jones has no hands (the fingers on his gloves are just for show and all he has are stumps where his hands should be). Jackson made a couple good plays here and there, but I thought he got abused by Jones.
Unfortunately, I forgot to set my DVR so I have no way to go back and take a second look.

Myers.
And I’d probably take Brown off the list. Elite implies “top five at your position” to me; he’s not quite there yet. Watt, Winston, and OD are all pretty close.
I disagree.
Winston gets lit up by a good pass rusher once or twice a season, but he’s solid in pass protection outside of that, and pretty elite as a run-blocker. Brown is more consistent in pass protection, but not nearly as good in run blocking. Hence why we run to the right side more often, and are more successful going in that direction.

"On third down, they were running the ball and getting seven or eight yards and getting first downs instead of trying to pass it," Falcons defensive end John Abraham said. "It was deflating."
Emphasis mine.
I’ve always heard that giving up yards through the air is easier for a defense to accept than giving up yards on the ground. Getting beat in the running game is demoralizing. That the Falcons came in with such a strong run defense and ended up deflated in spite of it speaks volumes.
