Texans Down 'N Dirty: The Short Edition
I have to apologize for this morning, but I simply don't have the time to put the normal effort into the daily links. I should be back and writing normally tomorrow or Monday at the latest. In the meantime, follow the jump for the links.
New linebackers coach Reggie Herring gave his first interview, and as Diehard Chris points out, the position coach shed some light on what he plans for Brian Cushing.
Over on Texans Tribune, Patrick brings up five questions in concern of Brian Cushing moving inside next season for the 3-4 switch. Kerns also gives his thoughts on how the NFL should learn from Major League Baseball in regards to the damage a work stoppage can do.
The other new position coach on defense, secondary coach Vance Joseph, gave an interview to Nick Scurfield and explained how he plans on turning that group around.
The firing of defensive coordinator Frank Bush and several members of his staff created the opportunity for Herring and Joseph to get their jobs. He didn't stay unemployed for long, because at one time he was an Oiler, so therefore he was hired by the Titans.
Alan Burge continued his draft watch with Arizona DE/OLB Brooks Reed. If you would like to see Reed in action, check out Aaron Aloysius' latest prospect video on the aforementioned Wildcat.
Burge pointed in his article that Lance Zierlein was impressed by Reed at the Senior Bowl. Zierlein himself posted his first draft podcast with Rob Rang and Jay Harris at the Sideline View.
Shaun Rogers continues to talk about how much he would like to play for the Texans as he keeps visiting with other teams.

The Vance interview is encouraging
Gotta be better than that Gibbs guy we had before right? Right?!

He has his work cut out for him
There’s no question the Texans DBacks are commited and high character guys. But they are so inexperienced. Hopefully the change in scheme will help. Hopefully Joseph can teach. I don’t expect them to mature overnight. We probably should prepare for some more of the same, but expect improvement as the season goes on. If that happens, then that will be the proof that Joseph is making an impact.

Agreed
I don’t expect him to work miracles overnight, but you have to think our entire secondary is desperate to prove that it was the system that sucked, and not them. I know I would be.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I like what he says about playing close and tackling
Hitting receivers as they get the ball creates turnovers and if I ever had a complaint that was consistent from season to season, it would be that the Texans D doesn’t separate the ball from the player enough.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Yep
You give the receiver time to come down with the ball, turn and take a step, he’s securing the ball and you lost that opportunity.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
That'll happen...
When your safeties are both a few steps late on every. single. play.
That was my impression too
His answers weren’t the typical canned responses you normally get. I especially like his perspective about being a former QB and understanding offensive tendencies.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
So Cush to the middle, huh?
I didnt see it before but if Herring can find ways to blitz him then he is right about that solidifying our center more. If Demeco happens to miss time or just isnt the same player I could see Sharpton filling in nicely. That also opens up some speculation as to who can play the SOLB effectively for us next season.
by theSpaceCityKid on Feb 17, 2011 8:00 AM CST reply actions
It's hard to draw a conclusion from just those two quotes
but I think it’s safe to say that Herring is at least entertaining the idea. I think it makes sense because it would certainly bolster our inside run defense, and part of the effectiveness of a 3-4 is to bring pass rush from any of the LB spots. Plus, DeMeco has stated repeatedly how much he likes playing next to Cush (it’s almost getting kinda creepy how much those two dig each other) and how they feed off each other.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
SOLB
If it’s not Cushing, I don’t think the guy is on the roster yet. From what I read about the position, I almost feel more comfortable with Cushing inside, but he was the only one I was comfortable with coverint TE’s at the SOLB spot, so a hole it does create.

Seriously don't know why anyone would hire Frank Bush
The LBs regressed under his coaching and coordinating…they were abysmal in covering TEs the past 3 or 4 seasons, awful in pass rush, and he could never develop anyone.
I know they’re a division rival, but I almost feel sorry for Tennessee on this one. I wouldn’t want Bush coaching my old high school, let alone a professional team.
"Lord, beer me strength."
That part confuses me the most
How the hell could our TE coverage be so bad when we had a shitload of them to practice against?

Because he has them line up about 8 yards off the ball
tipping off zone coverage.

True, very true
Then the TE just goes out and finds the space between coverage and any average QB can have a field day….

Fixed it for ya...
Any terrible QB can have a field day with his terrible TE.

Imagine what it was like for opposing offenses gameplanning against the Texans D?

maybe now Dallas Clark will look human against us
I swear, that guy torches us EVERY time we play the Colts and he’s healthy. It drives me nuts watching him carve up our soft zone.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I could never, never understand why he is allowed to run out uncovered like he is!
I am pretty calm when I watch a game on TV, but that always infuriated me

He’ll crack the Colts code.

Tennessee has aquired quite the interesting coaching staff
Chris Palmer? Jerry Gray? Frank Bush? I like Munchak but I cant see how he thinks these guys will be successful. This cronyism almost tops our FO. With Bush headin up there LB department I can see us lining up 3 or 4 TEs when we play them next season

Not really.
DeMeco had probably his best year since his rookie season in 2009, and Cushing played like an animal before he got busted for steroids. The awfulness of our secondary clouded everything this year, but I’m willing to bet that Bush does a pretty good job with LBs.

Ok serious questions here don't know if anybody talked about this stuff yet but let me know.
can texans use franchise tag on Vonta so he don’t leave? If so should we do it?
Players Tagged: (Top 2 Free Agent texans might be interested in)
Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning QB- $23 Million
Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Vick QB- $17-20 Million
Baltimore Ravens: Haloti Ngata NT/DE- $12 Million
San Diego Chargers: Vincent Jackson WR- $11 Million (Volek QB & Floyd WR)
New England: Logan Mankins LG- $10 Million
Kansas City Chiefs: Tamba Hali OLB/DE- $10 Million
New York Jets: David Harris OLB- $10 Million (Holmes WR & Cromartie CB)
Pittsburg Steelers: LaMarr Woodley OLB- $ (it’s been reported not sure of figure)
Teams not expected to use Franchise Tag (Top 2 Free Agents texans might be interested in):
49ers (Franklin NT & Goldson FS), Bears (Hanie QB), Bengals (Joseph CB & Owens WR), Bills, Browns (Rogers NT & Wright CB), Cardinals, Falcons (Grimes CB & Dahl RG), Dolphins, Lions, Raiders (Asomugha CB) Rams, Saints (Nicks RG), Seahawks (Hasselbeck QB), and Texans (Leach FB
If a player is tagged
That means they can’t negotiate with another team.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

We could francise Vonta
I don’t see why we couldn’t, and given the price of fbs it’d probably be the cheapest tag outside of punters. I would do this if we decide not to franchise OD, cuz if we got it, might as well use it, albeit a FB.

The franchise tag on a Tight End...
…would be ASStronomical because of the stupid negotiations done by other (cough Tampa Bay /cough) teams.

Yeah, that one really screwed everyone trying to sign TE's
Allen may be right about us having to wave bye-bye to OD.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Raiders can't use the tag on Scrabble
That was a clause in his contract

Is the FB franchise tag different from the RB franchise tag?
I can’t think of any fullbacks that have been franchised.

It's done by position
so it would be different…..by my understanding of the rule.
"Lord, beer me strength."
I know that RIP.
I would be ok using the tag on vonta if need be. Make him prove it again that he can bust heads. As much as we all like OD i think he might be gone too we have to many TE’s behind him to waste roster spots.
Ok looking at more mock drafts and now they have us taken cameron jordan.
Would y’all be ok with that pick?
Here is the list of combine participants.
But before that can someone tell me how they split them up? is it by group number? If so that means all the linebackers we looking at are in same group. But the guys who play DE will be in another group.

I heard on the drive to work today...
…that this is supposed to be a very Defensive Line laden draft. Hopefully our planetoid NT dreams will finally be realized and all will be right with the world.

Would like to add a link to something on the NFL CBA negotiations
I haven’t seen this linked to BRB before and it is about as comprehensive an explanation of the current status of the negotiations as I have seen and I think it is written in plain language that you don’t need to be a lawyer to understand.
