David Carr A 6th Round Pick?
Speaking of drafting a TE in the 1st round and other dead horse beatings, Jim Harbaugh had David Carr graded as a 6th round pick. Color me (not) shocked.
And just think: Charley Casserly is on TV every weekend (so it seems), and you aren't.

oops
What do you expect Harbaugh to say? He’s trying to get some value for Carr. You can’t blame him.

I made it green
Who was the first to see a cow and think "I wonder what will happen if I squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out?
I know that I am in the minority
but I still think he could have been a really good QB if he wasn’t ruined by being on a team without any form of offensive line whatsoever. Let Peyton Manning have been sacked 249 times in his first 5 years and even he would probably end up shell shocked holding a clipboard somewhere.
I think a lot of Carr's sacks were brought on by his inability to read defenses and his ineptness at getting rid of the ball
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
There was nothing wrong with his offensive line...
…that having a QB behind it with an IQ larger than his mitten size wouldn’t have fixed.

I agree....but just a little
The Texans didn’t do the best job of putting him in a position to succeed, but Carr didn’t do much to help himself either. No matter how good a job the Texans did putting pieces around him Carr wasn’t going to be the guy putting in the extra reps after practice and extra study time in the film room. There were hints of that while he was still here, but after he left that became painfully obvious.

This
The OL situation wasn’t ideal, but by no means was it the root cause of Zoolander’s failure.
Zoolander failed Zoolander. Zoolander failed the Texans.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Also
His o-line despised him because of what papabear mentioned (not a hard worker, didn’t learn the playbook, his father, etc.). My source? Let’s just say he knew more than a little about how the o-line felt.

What was the deal with his father?
I’ve heard several stories over the years that he was a control freak or something. Did he really interfere that much?
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Yes
I don’t have a specific story about his dad, though his name was used in “vain” several times during that particular discussion.

I call BS
With his athleticism and monster arm he was always destined to be a high pick. It wasn’t hard getting fooled into thinking he could be very good.

Maybe, but 1st overall pick good?
I think not. There’s no way he should have gone 1st overall.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
In most other drafts he wouldn't have
But you can’t just look at what he did in the pros and say he shouldn’t have been a first rounder. Whether it’s smart or not QB’s are going to largely be drafted based on how they compare to the other QB’s that year.
Look at the rest of this QB class:
1 1 David Carr Fresno State Houston Texans
1 3 Joey Harrington Oregon Detroit Lions
1 32 Patrick Ramsey Tulane Washington Redskins
3 81 Josh McCown Sam Houston State Arizona Cardinals
4 108 David Garrard East Carolina Jacksonville Jaguars
4 117 Rohan Davey Louisiana State New England Patriots
5 137 Randy Fasani Stanford Carolina Panthers
5 158 Kurt Kittner Illinois Atlanta Falcons
5 163 Brandon Doman Brigham Young San Francisco 49ers
5 164 Craig Nall Northwestern State-Louisiana Green Bay Packers
6 186 J.T. O’Sullivan California-Davis New Orleans Saints
7 216 Seth Burford Cal Poly-S.L.O. San Diego Chargers
7 232 Jeff Kelly Southern Mississippi Seattle Seahawks
7 235 Ronald Curry North Carolina Oakland Raiders
7 236 Wes Pate Stephen F. Austin St. Baltimore Ravens
When David Garrard is the most successful QB in a draft class I think it’s safe to say it was pretty weak year for QB’s. In fact, with zero research, this might be one of the worst draft classes of all time for QB’s.
The NFL is a QB league. Guys who everyone is positive will be a stud Gaurd can barely crack the first round if they are lucky. QB’s? The top QB in a draft class is always going to have a chance to go #1 and will rarely ever slip past #5 in the draft for the simple reason that teams at the top of the draft order often need a QB. It’s always going to be that way because of the importance of the position.
Looking at the names on that list it’s not hard to see why many people considered Carr the top QB. The debate was between him and Harrington….and you lose either way. Taking Carr was obviously a wrong move in hindsight, and you can make a case against any draft pick, but at the time they decided to go with the guy who was generally considered to be the best QB coming out of college that year. I suspect marketing played a tiny role (a good looking family guy with dreamy hair is a marketing gold mine for PR people). That shouldn’t be the case, but whoever we picked was going to be the face of the franchise for years to come.

You don't even need research
It’s a terrible class. If that’s not the worst, I don’t know what was.
The problem was an expansion team needing a face of the franchise. We were doomed simply because it was 2002.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Exactly
It’s too far back to remember what free agent QBs were available but we would’ve been better off taking a street free agent and drafting Peppers. Sure the W/L results might have been the same, but at least we wouldn’t have been stuck with Carr for 5 years.
Hindsight is great isn’t it?
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I have to agree
A lot of people were high on him, but when I see mechanics that poor, I’m also liable to drop a player a lot in a draft. I think a good modern day comp for him would be Tebow, but there’s no way I would’ve taken Tebow before the 3rd round.

Hell, I haven't beat this dead horse in a few years so why not......
Questionable mechanics, poor pocket awareness, inability to read defenses, suspect work ethic, running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, and those stupid fucking gloves.
I can’t believe they gave that guy an extension. Thank god we finally got a coach that knows a shitty QB when he sees one, and talked the owner into taking a loss.

The funniest thing ever
Was having Carr’s little brother try to defend him on the HT.com boards. He tried to disguise his identity for a while but then came clean to some of the regular members when they called him out. I felt kinda bad for the kid. Reminded me of this…..

The Funniest part
Is that "sources say’
Carr was doomed between his lack of work and lack of being coached up
That year QB’s did suck
I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games
Did somebody say, "David Carr?"
