What Is Your Favorite Pre-Texans Football Memory?

BFD's allusion to Roberston v. Pastorini in this FanPost got me thinking. Many Houston fans simply stopped following NFL football after Beezlebud announced he was moving the Oilers to Nashville in 1995, choosing to remember the good times with the Oilers rather than supporting any other professional team or players. Other fans continued to watch pro football, but opted to follow other teams or players (Barry Sanders and the Lions, for me) before the Texans arrived.

Regardless of how you handled the City of Houston being without a professional football team, you likely have a fond recollection or 34 of NFL football that pre-dates the Houston Texans. Tell us some of your favorite pre-Texans football memories in the Comments below.

I didn't watch much football before the Texans came into existance

but my most vivid football memory by far from before they came into existance is the last drive of the Rams Titans super bowl. What a hell of a finish to the game.

Caught that one live.

Probably my most memorable as well. I had no stake in that game though… I was sitting there in a red Arizona Cardinals’ Jake Plummer jersey, surrounded by blue, purple, and gold, sticking out like a sore thumb.

There are many 49ers moments I can point to throughout the 80s, but I'll keep it more recentish.....

but to me, it had to be Super Bowl XXIX…I don’t think I was ever more excited as a fan than to see Jerry Rice catch a deep bomb and sprint into the end zone with his arms outstretched.

T.O.‘s “The Catch II” was another pretty exciting moment. I don’t know how he held onto the ball to this day.

Even though I am not a Chiefs fan, I still loved the 94 playoffs…it was great to see Joe Montana get some last shining moments in the playoffs.

I’m sure I’ll think of more…

Prime Time!

I ended up seeing Deion Sanders play for the Falcons against the Oilers in the Astrodome. The whole carnival that surounded him and his style of play lead me to follow him to his 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins and Ravens days.
His socks, wearing gold bracelets under his gloves w/o strapping them up, his lack of tackling, dancing in the endzone and having his own music cd were all things that made him a groundbreaker for NFL players today.Deion made the game fun and exciting. You never knew if Deion would take it to the house when he touched the ball but he got the fans on the edge of their seat.
He always was the lockdown corner wherever he went, except in the the twighlight of his career in Baltimore. I did what I could to see him play on TV, he was football for me when the Oilers left.

Deion

He got big as I was in college, and I stole EVERYTHING I possibly could from him. I already had a rep for talking non-stop trash playing sports, but it got that much worse from watching him. My favorite was his “shark” move (I think that’s what he called it), when he’d put his hand behind his head when going in for scores. Often being the shortest guy on the field – with my badass mullet – probably made it that much funnier.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Probably

Warren Moon throwing to Jeffries, Slaughter, Duncan and Givens. Also the entire O-line beasting out and the defense actually being “respectable”.

Joe Montana in a Chiefs uniform was the fucking worst.

by b0ng on Feb 3, 2011 12:10 PM CST reply actions

I got serious man love for Warren Moon

I’ve taken a lot of shit in the past for claiming he’s one of the best pure passers to ever play. He doesn’t get his due because he never played for an NFL title, but he was an incredibly polished passer. No one in the game at that time threw a better deep ball than Moon.

I think we Houstonians underrated Moon when he was playing.

Which is criminal, really.

I took a trip down memory lane...

the other day and youtubed the oiler games that I attended. The first of which was a MNF against the Bears, the play that stands out, and I found on youtube was Bubba Mcdowell’s pick 6 of Peter Tom Willis, man that’s a name I wish I had thought of the other day when we were discussing who we wanted instead of Schaub. I saw the play live just as it’s seen on youtube, happened right in front of us. This is probably my fav moment, that I witnessed.

Youtube, Jacksonville’s first ever win, and it was against the Oilers, I was also at that game. I swear it looks just like the Texans in oiler uniforms.

But my fondest Oiler memories, are watching Ernest Givens, and the Electric Slide, Ray Childress driving Christian Okoye to the turf flat on his back, and when they played “Bad Moon Rising” when Moon was getting hot.

I also walked up on Gary Wellman, Pat Carter, and Bucky Richardson at Dave and Busters and had a drink with them and laughed as Gary Wellman was stumbling drunk.

The *other* Big D

My parents lived in Denver for a few years before I was hatched and they would cheer for the Broncos as long as their wins didn’t affect the Oilers. So in that down time between teams I finally got to root for a winner. It was fun watching Elway get a trophy.

Before then, my fondest memory might be Bucky throwing left handed as he was jumping out of bounds in what I believe was a preseason game for the Oilers. That was probably his only decent play, but I remember it anyways. Sadly my dad always emphasized Moon’s bad play more than the good so I don’t have as many good memories from the Oilers as I should. I was also too young to remember seeing Earl dominate (although the youtube clips are unbelievable).

MIne would have to be a bit different to most

I caught the Broncos superbowl win against the packers, but I don’t really remember a whole lot about the game.

So the best pre-Texan memory would have to be Cris Carter on NFL.com circa 2001. He did a video of how to catch the ball. “Point and fat” was used to describe the ball as it comes at him. It was a damn good display of his football skills.

Oiler fan until they moved....

Some of my fondest memories, and heartbreak, about football came from the Oilers. Growing up in Spring, it was southbound trip to the Astrodome and I got the priviledge to watch Haywood Jeffries, Drew Hill, Ernest Givins , and Warran Moon running the Run-N-Shoot offense. Now that was special. Jeffries toe-tapping in the back of the end zone was the epitomy, before AJ and Randy Moss, of a corner of the end zone jump ball.

by BruiserTexans on Feb 3, 2011 1:22 PM CST reply actions

Easily the best has to be the Rams-Traitors Super Bowl.

Not only was it the most entertaining Super Bowl I’ve seen to date but I will always remember the crunchy video goodness that came with seeing the Traitors coming up one yard short of forcing overtime.

I always imagine Traitor fans wailing in their double-wide trailers and meth labs at the defeat they suffered; thinking “You wanted a football team? Guess what? THAT’S the kind of team you got, a heartbreaking team.”

I wish them all the worst and hope that someday whatever the hell that thing is on Beelzebud’s head wakes up and decides to eat him alive.

Oilers

I started going to games in ’74, so I grew up with that era of greats: Curley Culp, Gregg Bingham, Zeke Moore, Tim Wilson, Rob Carpenter, Mike Reinfeldt, Carl Mauck, etc. But my favorites were Elvin Bethea, Robert Brazile, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, and, of course, Earl. An uncle went to HS with Mike Barber, so we had him over a couple of times.

The run and shoot crew was fun, but my fave from that era was Hugene Seale.

Yes, I very clearly have a thing for defensive linemen and linebackers.

Before I end this post, that Robert Brazile is not in the HOF is a crime against humanity. Thank you.

I was always a huge Steelers fan back in the day

But, Robert Brazile was a huge player from that day and it is a shame he is not in the HOF. He was LT before there was Lawrence Taylor. He terrorized opposing teams! What can we all do about getting him in? What are the possible options?

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Yes Brazile should be in HOF

I have a lot of favorite times, Earl and Whiteshoes. I even liked it when we got washed up Stabler throwing slow wobbly passes to Casper.

Run & Shoot was a lot of fun to watch and Pardee had a good team.

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

Pre-Texans...I suppose we're talking about here in Houston, so I won't bore you with any stories from other places

Let’s see. I showed up in 2001 when Reliant Stadium was in construction. I knew the contractor building it, so I went down for a personal tour. The four main structural columns were poured and if my memory serves me, they were in progress with installing the retractable roof structure. Because the project was still in progress, you could see things that would go unseen today because it’s all covered up now. It was a real nice project and you could see that when it was finished it would be a marvel. Of note, the same local general contractor that was involved in building Reliant also built the new Cowturds stadium.

that Brazile HOF petition is now up to four signatures...

My favorite moment would have to be SB XXXII. Real surprise, there, I’m sure.

Reggie White and Gilbert Brown looking as though they were going to faint by the 4th Quarter. Holmgren telling the media later, that the Pack “let” Denver score the eventual game-winning TD. Ahhh those Favre-led Packers and their “near-dynasty”…

My second favorite moment would have to be the single greatest play that I’ve ever seen. ‘98 regular season, Peightoon’s rookie year. The Colts jumped out to an early 21-0 lead at Candlestick, in a game the Niners would eventually win…

I don’t remember if this was a play that resulted in one of his two rushing TDs that day… but Steve Young had a long scramble, in which he broke something like 13 tackles by nine different Colts’ defenders. It was amazingly beautiful. I hate that it’s never shown anywhere. Won’t find it on youtube, either. I always look.

I would absolutely love to see more of this play… I could watch it over, and over, and over, again. You would, too…
