As some of us debated last year with Dez Bryant...do you take Julio Jones at No. 11, even though there are so many more pressing needs for the Texans?

if he is the best player there you take him.

I mean really why not just outscore teams. did we don’t have to worry to much about our D so much.

It'd be hard not to.

Think he can return punts or kicks? That added utility would certainly put me at ease.

And he played 7 games

with a broke hand. Is that something that would be a concern, yea he is tough and can play extremely well with injures but he just suffered fractures to what are the most important bones a WR needs. Hands and feet.

But he'd played through them & can still be effective

I think he the perfect guy for Andre Johnson to teach up

Amukamara crushed it.

4.37/4.44. Not sure what that means for us, exactly… Just another intriguing option out there.

Interesting potential late-round SS...

Shiloh Keo. Doesn’t have great speed, but he has some size, and looked really fluid back-pedaling and changing direction. Managed to break up a fair amount of passes in college, too. Plus, he has a cool name.

by Nashmeister on Mar 1, 2011 9:47 AM CST reply actions

Keo looking great again on another drill.

Stops and starts on a dime, stays on line, and catches everything.

by Nashmeister on Mar 1, 2011 9:51 AM CST up reply actions

Jeron Johnson, another SS, delivered a great time for a SS with a 4.55.

Love that kid more now that I see some wheels.

Third drill he's shown great footwork.

Even though he dropped the pick. Looked pissed about it, though. Fiery guy. I’m high on him. 4th-round high.

Amukamara looks sharp. Ahmad Black, not so much. Kendric Burney looks really good at CB, too. They’re calling him a cover-two system player, though.

by Nashmeister on Mar 1, 2011 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Ahmad Black was too small heading in

now he’s also too slow.

Johnson & Keo

I’ve watched a boatload of bsu and quite a few Idaho games. Keo in my opinion is a poor boys pollard, he’s good in run support but a liability in the passing game. Granted bsu is much better, but they’ve picked him apart in coverage numerous times. Johnson on the other hand isn’t superb at run support or finding the ball, but he’s just a solid overall player. He is a good tackler and stays true to his assignments in coverage. He might not be a ballhawk, but he will certainly be where he needs to be.

by texan80 on Mar 1, 2011 12:00 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

If the knock on him is that he's poor in coverage...

Well, you could say that about pretty much every strong safety in the league. There aren’t a whole lot of guys out there who can turn around and run with receivers. What you’re looking for is somebody who is stout against the run (and despite his reputation around here, Pollard is not), with the ability to latch onto a TE in the red-zone or a RB in the flat. Keo might not have the top-end speed that Johnson has, but he blew every other DB out of the water in short-range agility.

agree

him and Julio Jones might of helped us the most. Now we need Gabbert and Newton to have amazing pro days and we could get a great player at 11

by ketchuppants7 on Mar 1, 2011 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

Some expert I heard on the radio this morning says Gabbert is the most NFL ready QB

He said that after watching all the QBs Combine workouts. The expert is not affiliated with a team. Don’t know his name. He was on the radio.

If that is true, there will be teams that put Gabbert up there and others that put Newton up there. The odd guy out, maybe, is Jake Locker. Where will he go? There is a school of thought that if he makes it out of the top ten, he will sink to the 2nd round because all the teams in the bottom half of the 1st round already have there young, franchise QB, so they don’t need to take a flyer on Locker. This may get a team that does need a franchise QB and they are in the top ten and miss out on Gabbert and Newton, they may be content to pass on Locker in the 1st round and wait until the 2nd to snag him. That scenario is bad for the Texans, UNLESS, they want to play games. I’m throwing this out there because I’m a poker player. What if the Texans call some other teams bluff and take Locker in the 1st round after the other teams pass on him? Then, because someone missed him when they SHOULD have taken him, the Texans wing a deal to exchange 1st rounders after the fact, because they can….. What do you think about that idea?

We pick up Locker and then since the redskins wanted him they trade whoever they picked in the first round for Locker?

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 1, 2011 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

Yes

I think anyone who needs a franchise QB and passes on Locker in the 1st round is gambling that he will still be there in the 2nd.

Yea seems risky

by ketchuppants7 on Mar 1, 2011 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

Julio Jones makes us better than any other possible pick IMO

Unless you can tell me we have a chance at Fairley, Bowers or Peterson. Ive heard scouts say he has even outshined AJ Green in the combine. I truly believe significant value can be found at DT, OLB and CB in later rounds adn those players playmaking abilities are not NEAR as different from the 1st round prospects at their positions as the next tier of WRs compared to Julio Jones. A WR corps of Dre, Jones and Walters with the quality TEs we have on the roster could be the making of a SUPER BOWL caliber offense. I cant see how you pass that up if you are Kubes and Co.

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 1, 2011 11:00 AM CST reply actions

That is so-ooooo tempting

AJ and Julio Jones, bookends. Julio Jones could also be the slot. He likes to go over the middle and punish Ss. He likes to block. He takes pride in being a complete WR. No LB stands a chance of keeping up with him.

New ideal draft :

1. Julio Jones
2. Jimmy Smith/Davon house/ Brandon Harris/Aaron Williams
3. Dontay Moch
4. Brooks reed/Greg jones
5. Kendrick Ellis/Ian Williams
6. Alex Henery
7. Pat Devlin/Jerrod Johnson

I don't think he was that good at Colorado...

I don’t see any ball skills from him and his egotistical statement about he’s on par with Scrabble is a huge negative in my mind.

Plus, I see him more as a safety than a CB. I like me some House or Harris in round 2 though.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Mar 1, 2011 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

OK I got ya, I just read that statment earlier and rolled my eyes for sure.

He did do 24 reps on the bench press tho. Which is pretty amazing to be honest since it almost matches most of the DTs with an average of about 27 or 28.

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 1, 2011 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

And here's the death killer to Smith to Houston (besides the fact I think he's overrated)
Unfortunately, Smith has major character concerns. He tested positive for drugs at Colorado and was also arrested twice. During the team interviews, Smith reportedly admitted to only one arrest, which draws yet another red flag.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Mar 2, 2011 9:22 AM CST up reply actions

I think that should be the death killer to any team period in the first

jesus thats a high risk to take, testing positive and 2 arrests and a big fat liar?

To be honest

I dont want to get a CB in this draft at all but I just know we will. If it were my choice I guess I would take out all the CBs at #2, slide Dontay Moch to #2, Brooks Reed to #3 and then grab the best available safety prospect at #4, maybe Deunta Williams or Jaiqwan Jarrett, whoever is still on the board

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 1, 2011 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

I don't want a CB, either

We need to find help via FA, or we’ve done nothing to improve that particular situation.

I think it's worth it...

For the sake of depth and value. There are about six guys in this draft at CB that look better than anybody besides Haden from last year. Maybe not for immediate contribution, but a guy like House or Harris in the second would be a steal.

I like this draft board except one thing

I think we’ll trade up into the bottom of the first to grab Stephen Paea or Phil Taylor, probably by giving up our 2nd pick, next year’s 2nd pick, & Amobi Okoye

by The Night Owl on Mar 1, 2011 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

I LIKE that move a lot and wouldnt mind that at all

Remove the 2nd rd pick and add a late first where we grab Phil Taylor, Paea, or possibly another LB like Justin Houston or something since we will need to add quite a bit of LBs with the move to 3-4
