Talk that Peyton Manning Could Go from the Hated Colts to the Despised Jets

Amd_nfl_logo_medium

via assets.nydailynews.com

Sure, this story comes from the NY Daily News, but it is fun to speculate, isn't it? ...much more fun than trying to understand the details of the upcoming Players vs. the NFL lawsuit, anyways. So let's. As the article states, one of the potential side effects of the lawsuit is that everyone's MVP QB Peyton Manning, may become a totally unrestricted free agent and able to ply his services to the highest bidder. I ask, why wouldn't he? The writer, Gary Myers, goes on to state the case why the Jets would be the team that would make that offer, somewhere in the neighborhood of starting at $25 million per year. That's a lot of green, pun intended. Myers rationalizes that since there is no union, there is no CBA, and no franchise tags which makes Peyton Manning his own property and able to seek any deal he wants.

The Jets are a win-now team.

You know what? I'm okay with this. Peyton Manning is part of the lawsuit and why shouldn't he be an example of what it means to negotiate to the NFL Club Owners? The Owners did not see fit to bring the negotiations to a close. The players had to take things into their own hands, decertify the union, and now the lawsuit. Totally unrestricted free agency is the likely result. I can't believe the Owners didn't see that coming. All that is stopping this from happening is for Federal Judge David Doty to grant an injunction on the lockout and rule franchise tags illegal, with an NFL appeal taking a few weeks, and bam! Peyton Manning is free to negotiate with anyone he wants to.

Highly unlikely

But seeing Manning once every four years instead of twice every year would be nice

Oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please...

In my heart of hearts I know that this will never happen because I just don’t see 5Head being that kinda’ guy… But I would be SO tickled if he would decide that it was just too much money to pass up and make the jump. I could then root for the guy every Sunday (except once every 4 years and hopefully in the playoffs) with real enthusiasm.

If I was a Colts fan… even speculation like this would make me absolutely nauseous. Sorry… you have my empathy but not my sympathy.

Without Manning

The Colts go from perennial Division Champion to fighting for last place honors and looking for the number one pick and a chance to draft Andrew Luck, the next Peyton Manning.

Hmmm... "Luck" rhymes with "suck"...

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Luck IS the next Matt Leinart is what I said

He has forgone the number 1 pick in this year’s draft to pursue another season in the NCAA. That pretty much seals the comparison.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Ah I gotcha

I took it out of context then. I thought you were talking about his lack of NFL success.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Mar 14, 2011 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

He is possibly jeopardizing his future earning potential

If he has an injury or just a bad season next year. You know what happened to Leinart, right? The extra season allowed the experts to pick apart and find flaws in his game that dropped him down in the draft. He lost a lot of money in doing that. I’m not saying that will happen to Luck. But, you never know. I think his game is excellent, so I think his chances of staying number 1 next year are good. But, he’s playing the odds.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on Mar 14, 2011 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I completely get the comparison now

On one hand it’s always good for players to stay in school and finish out their degrees as a fallback, but on the other they potentially risk losing out on some big time money, especially a #1 QB prospect.

And considering he just lost his coach to an NFL gig you would think he would’ve come out . I guess he just really likes school…..or really didn’t like the teams picking at the top of the draft.

Teams picking at the top

The teams that need a franchise QB are generally in with the teams near the top of the draft. Looking around, there are more teams in the draft that need a franchise QB than there are franchise QBs. So, take that group, and he is likely looking at the some of the same teams next draft.

lack of NFL success??

Leinart almost held the clipboard for your Houston Texans last season!

I think by all definitions, that is a success.

Something has to make or break for Leinart this season

If he doesn’t find himself in a position to fight for a starting job, I think he becomes a lifelong backup QB. Or, he finds himself out of the NFL. I would not have predicted that 5 years ago.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

no kidding

I thought at the very least he would have mild success.. His issues aren’t physical talent or lack of football IQ, it’s mental fortitude.

Lifelong Backup

Is not a bad gig

Job security and a long career

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

Highly Unlikely isn't even a remote enough description.

Manning is a Colt. He has said as much. He wants to stay a Colt until he retires, and the Colts want the same thing. Manning is not going anywhere.

It's complete fantasy

The writer is only saying what is possible. The events that have unfolded and should continue to unfold very well might open the possibility that Peyton Manning COULD make that decision and the Jets COULD make the offer and the Jets and Manning COULD join forces and that just might be the thing that needs to happen to put them both over the hump and into the Super Bowl. Think about it. The Jets have been just a few plays short the last two seasons and that’s coming out of the division with the Patriots. Just think what might happen if they continue to improve, get Manning and then win the division giving them a home field advantage through the playoffs. So, that being said, isn’t it every players desire to win the Super Bowl? Yes. I think that makes it possible.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on Mar 14, 2011 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

The NY media is stupid

Manning isn’t playing solely because of money. He isn’t going to leave the franchise he has free reign to pretty much run himself. Especially to play for a fat big mouthed coach, that would be a total personality clash for him.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on Mar 14, 2011 7:51 AM CDT reply actions

He's getting older and the Jets are a QB away from winning

While I think he stays in blue, I don’t think it’s preposterous to think that it wouldn’t be a fit.

The 'fit' isn't what is preposterous

what is preposterous is the notion that Manning would have any interest whatsoever in going to NY. He has won a championship already. He runs Indy and will probably be in their front office when he retires. What motivation could there possibly be for him to go to NY?

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

with the Colts than the Jets.

by DaGoaT on Mar 15, 2011 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

There’s no way he would give up the control he has over the Colts offense to go to a zoo like NY. He’d have to learn a completely different offense with completely different personnel, play outdoors with wind and winter weather, tolerate the most overrated fan base in all of sports, etc, etc. Give up the cushy situation he has in Indy, where he’s undoubtedly cruising his way into the HOF, for the Jets???

NO WAY

I'm thinking a marriage of Peyton Manning and Rex Ryan would be pretty compatible

Rex Ryan talks a lot, but he likes players that are take command. Peyton is ideal for what Rex Ryan wants. Ryan would likely be ecstatic. Look at how he supports Mark Sanchez. Mark Sanchez has lots of chinks in the armor, yet Rex Ryan gets behind him completely.

Manning does NOT want to be owned by Tom Brady twice a year.

here is a thought...

Pujols to the Rangers…Imagine that lineup…..Beltre, Hamilton, Cruz, Pujols…..then throw in Kinsler and Andrus…..

"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."
