As long as it isn't as high price - OK

Though I really think we need more Thor!

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

It may be more based on the no free agency thing

Than anything. I really do not know what to think over all – he makes teh Schaub a better QB when he plays

Same here

But then again we shouldn’t be too shocked since Kubiak was pretty candid at the end of the season about his desire to have him back. Still, I would’ve guessed that money to be used for other needs.

On one hand I’m glad to have him back because he’s a great talent when he’s healthy. On the other hand he’s had 3 knee surgeries now so it’s a bit of a risk. Plus, I can’t help but feel skeptical that we’re going to go after anyone significant in free agency to fill our biggest needs.

No long-term deal is really long-term.

Depends on the salary bonuses.

Why you should hate this deal start directly with vacuuming cap space that could be used on the defense into an offense that seemed to function just fine without Daniels.

from rotoworld...

“Heath Miller was one of the last tight ends to sign a big long-term deal and received a $5.9 million annual average. Though Daniels isn’t nearly the blocker Miller is, he’s a much better pass catcher, making his $5.5 million average look like a bargain for Houston. Daniels, 28, was slow to recover from a torn right ACL in 2010, but closed strong with an average of six catches for 68 yards per game and two TDs in the final month. An elite slot receiver when healthy, Daniels was a 2008 Pro Bowler before blowing out the knee in 2009. He figures to be undervalued in 2011 fantasy drafts.”

Well I'm certainly happy for OD

He deserved this money before he got hurt, and he busted his tail to get back to where he was after the season.

That doesn’t make it any less stupid of a deal, but I’m glad he got his.

by riversmccown on Mar 3, 2011 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Some optimism in the sea of pessimism

If OD can return to his previous levels of production, this is actually a bargain of a contract for an elite TE. It seems that he was back to his old self at the end of last season. The risk is that OD gets injured again, what with his 3(?) ACL tears in his career.

If people don’t like it because we have Thor/Garrett Graham waiting in the wings, then just imagine a two TE set with OD and OD 2.0 tearing up defenses.

by UprootedTexan on Mar 3, 2011 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yea...

And we all know what happens when we actually get a bargain on something: we renegotiate it two years later.

by Nashmeister on Mar 3, 2011 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

That is completely reasonable.

It’s not outrageous money and he’s our most proven dynamic TE. Dressen is extremely dependable, but Thor and Graham have no established track-record. For a team with eyes on winning now, I don’t see how this is a bad deal. It’s not my favorite, but I’m the very definition of nonplussed.

by DisplacedTexan on Mar 3, 2011 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

How can someone create a proven track record

If they can’t even get onto the field?

I would have let OD go, and used that deal for Vonta.

by Amivy on Mar 3, 2011 12:52 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

They can't.

And they don’t. I’m not making excuses for them seeing or not seeing the field. That point is irrelevant. I’m saying based on the body of evidence and the purported goals of the team, this is not an unreasonable contract.

by DisplacedTexan on Mar 3, 2011 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

6M guaranteed is really low

I’m surprised. I expected 9. If they have to cut him, it’s not a killer…reasonable salary that’s front loaded if he returns to form. Not too shabby.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Mar 3, 2011 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Same

More acceptable now. As I was telling DisplacedTexan, the biggest problem I have with the deal is I believe OD is done. We might get one year from him at something resembling his former production, but I can’t see him being productive after age 30. When you add that he’s probably the worst blocking TE in the league, it just seems like a lot.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

by bigfatdrunk on Mar 3, 2011 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

really?

worst in the league, i think thats a tad extreme…dont remember OD every being JOHN MCCLAINED on a running play..plus OD is only 28 so that would mean 2 more years of “former production” before he gets past the 30 year old marker

by Mike Ram on Mar 3, 2011 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

and

if OD really is THAT bad in blocking, joel makes for better trade bait sense would be a more complete TE and no real injury history..so, keep OD, let THOR come around, maybe HILL actually hits the field..trade joel for….namdi.hahah jk

by Mike Ram on Mar 3, 2011 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

I tend to agree

I’m not in the same boat as others thinking OD is a terrible blocker. “Could he be better? You bet”……wait for it……“and he’d be the first to tell you that.”

Not saying he’s a beast of a run blocker but the run game isn’t terrible with him in there. Plus, it helps keep a defense honest knowing that any moment he could release his block on a play action and bust wide open.

Like Mike said, now that we know his guaranteed money isn’t real high I guess I can live with it, but I would much rather have seen that money go to a key defensive free agent.

Why so upset

We got the guy relatively cheap and I’m guessin guaranteed is about 10 million. You guys are acting like we broke the bank. After some of the ridiculous te contracts by davis and winslow this seems like an okay deal. He came on strong last year and our offense plays to full potential when he’s in there. I know he’s got some injury issues but he seemed like his old self last year the second half of the season. And he’s a great receiving te, we always run outta double tight sets so having one in there to block and one to catch passes is a staple of our offense.

We all love OD. He’s great, but we have younger guys at that position that we’ve been drafting for a while now… and a lot of us feel that we could have used that money on the other side of the ball to help our defense get better.

Yeah

It’s nothing against OD the player, it’s all about the money.

Ah, okay, that makes sense.

Well, then, good luck on your….salary cap.

Like the others guys have said

We all love OD but there are two great big concerns that we have. First, he’s had 3 ACL surgeries in his career. Second, we have MAJOR holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball since we’re switching to a 3-4 (well actually we would still have major holes in a 4-3 but we have more now). We were all hoping that cap money would be spent to bring in some stud defensive FA’s, but every penny we spend puts us further away from that happening.

Does anyone actually know how serious a problem the salary cap is or would be to us?

‘Cause if not, I really don’t understand why it’s bad to re-sign OD. I totally agree with Hydroshock and anyone else saying, that our 2 TE sets are far less predictable with OD on the field. This is not a huge contract. I mean 5,5 mill. a year is a fair price for our second best Schaub-target. And in the worst case scenario 6 mill. guaranteed is not too much to cut him if he gets injured again.
If the signing of OD will be the reason for not signing FA’s or not having enough money to fix the D in some other way, I will join in the choir of haters of this signing. I want some FA signings on D as bad as anyone here, and I most certainly not welcome the idea of a starting Safety duo named Nolan & Nowhere Man. But untill then I will not be angry just because I wanted some other things to happen prior to this signing.

It will all depend on the new CBA

Owners are asking for another billion of the top and to lower the % of revenue that goes into the salary pool for players. If the owners get any sort of win the cap should be smaller. No idea if there would be a mechanism to grandfather parts of contracts signed under old CBA in.

That’s really the risk with these signings, although none of them have been large enough to cause big problems I don’t think….but no one really knows how the salary cap will look.

In that case

I guess it’s too early to say, if signing OD is a bad move, when we only look at the financial perspective, right?

by BrotherSalsa on Mar 3, 2011 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

I think the team feels fairly confident they know where things will end up

None of the deals have been huge, and are probably structured to make them easy to get out of. We could guess wrong, but more than likely they have a pretty good handle on how they can handle the cap and a plan/budget for FA if it happens.

It’s hard to judge any deal until your a good ways into it.

Untill proven a financial failure

I will just continue liking the OD signing, then

No way the cap goes down imho

its not like the nfl is struggling like hockey was. Its making boatloads of money.

So forget the OD contract for a minute. We resigned Derrick Mollasses Ward

So does that make Ben Tate the 3rd string back? If so why did we draft him in the 2nd round at all if we were not going to give him a chance to play?

by Draco on Mar 3, 2011 4:52 PM CST reply actions

I don't see it that way

as someone already stated somewhere, Tate will get the chance to take the RB#2 spot, but if he can’t we know that Ward is an ok backup. If he’s up for the task, we will cut Ward next year. No matter what, though, it seems likely, that Slaton is gone

by BrotherSalsa on Mar 3, 2011 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

True and it's only a one year deal so not too big a risk

but I am just surprised at some of the moves we are making

by Draco on Mar 3, 2011 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I'm not so surprised at the moves we are making

I’m surprised (and disappointed, maddened and a lot of other things) at the moves we are NOT making

by BrotherSalsa on Mar 3, 2011 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

This is how it will go

If he scores 10-12 TDs we will all be glad they did

If he goes down for more than a couple of games we will say “See, they should have let him go.” :)

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games
