Texans Agree To New Contract With Owen Daniels
According to Pancakes, a new deal is done. No details yet, will update when the numbers are available.
UPDATE: Per Schefter, the deal is 4 years $22 Million.
UPDATE 2: Per Adam Caplan of FOX Sports, $14 Million of it will be paid the first two seasons. Anyone like this deal? I don't.
UPDATE 3: Pancakes is now reporting the deal has $6 Million guaranteed.

As long as it isn't as high price - OK
Though I really think we need more Thor!
I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games
Huh. I can't say I saw that coming.

It may be more based on the no free agency thing
Than anything. I really do not know what to think over all – he makes teh Schaub a better QB when he plays

Same here
But then again we shouldn’t be too shocked since Kubiak was pretty candid at the end of the season about his desire to have him back. Still, I would’ve guessed that money to be used for other needs.
On one hand I’m glad to have him back because he’s a great talent when he’s healthy. On the other hand he’s had 3 knee surgeries now so it’s a bit of a risk. Plus, I can’t help but feel skeptical that we’re going to go after anyone significant in free agency to fill our biggest needs.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
So...
The priority was OD? Not Leach or someone else?
I’ve got mixed feelings on this one.

can't say i'm thrilled to hear this news...
don’t get me wrong, OD is great when healthy…but a multi-year is kinda risky…..given the currently adequate talent (with upside yet) behind him, the money definitely should have been used elsewhere
I read an article saying that the Texans Cheerleaders are the 2nd best in the league at bringing in revenue...and another one saying that a Texans tailgating group won the national competition.....at least we got those going for us!
No long-term deal is really long-term.
Depends on the salary bonuses.
Why you should hate this deal start directly with vacuuming cap space that could be used on the defense into an offense that seemed to function just fine without Daniels.

from rotoworld...
“Heath Miller was one of the last tight ends to sign a big long-term deal and received a $5.9 million annual average. Though Daniels isn’t nearly the blocker Miller is, he’s a much better pass catcher, making his $5.5 million average look like a bargain for Houston. Daniels, 28, was slow to recover from a torn right ACL in 2010, but closed strong with an average of six catches for 68 yards per game and two TDs in the final month. An elite slot receiver when healthy, Daniels was a 2008 Pro Bowler before blowing out the knee in 2009. He figures to be undervalued in 2011 fantasy drafts.”

Owen Daniels will receive nearly $14 million in the first two years of his deal. Very generous deal from the team considering his injuries.

Some optimism in the sea of pessimism
If OD can return to his previous levels of production, this is actually a bargain of a contract for an elite TE. It seems that he was back to his old self at the end of last season. The risk is that OD gets injured again, what with his 3(?) ACL tears in his career.
If people don’t like it because we have Thor/Garrett Graham waiting in the wings, then just imagine a two TE set with OD and OD 2.0 tearing up defenses.
True...
But money going to OD is money that doesn’t go to Vonta or, more importantly, toward potential free agents.
And we need to upgrade the personnel on the defensive side of the ball…badly.

Yea...
And we all know what happens when we actually get a bargain on something: we renegotiate it two years later.
That is completely reasonable.
It’s not outrageous money and he’s our most proven dynamic TE. Dressen is extremely dependable, but Thor and Graham have no established track-record. For a team with eyes on winning now, I don’t see how this is a bad deal. It’s not my favorite, but I’m the very definition of nonplussed.

They can't.
And they don’t. I’m not making excuses for them seeing or not seeing the field. That point is irrelevant. I’m saying based on the body of evidence and the purported goals of the team, this is not an unreasonable contract.

6M guaranteed is really low
I’m surprised. I expected 9. If they have to cut him, it’s not a killer…reasonable salary that’s front loaded if he returns to form. Not too shabby.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Same
More acceptable now. As I was telling DisplacedTexan, the biggest problem I have with the deal is I believe OD is done. We might get one year from him at something resembling his former production, but I can’t see him being productive after age 30. When you add that he’s probably the worst blocking TE in the league, it just seems like a lot.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
"Blind fandom is all I got left." - LoneSpot
really?
worst in the league, i think thats a tad extreme…dont remember OD every being JOHN MCCLAINED on a running play..plus OD is only 28 so that would mean 2 more years of “former production” before he gets past the 30 year old marker
I tend to agree
I’m not in the same boat as others thinking OD is a terrible blocker. “Could he be better? You bet”……wait for it……“and he’d be the first to tell you that.”
Not saying he’s a beast of a run blocker but the run game isn’t terrible with him in there. Plus, it helps keep a defense honest knowing that any moment he could release his block on a play action and bust wide open.
Like Mike said, now that we know his guaranteed money isn’t real high I guess I can live with it, but I would much rather have seen that money go to a key defensive free agent.

And I don’t even like it. But if he holds up for a couple years, you get market value out of him. If he somehow manages to stay healthy for four? Well, you’re getting a steal on the last two years. i like keeping OD
i agree with what barry earlier said..schaub is a better qb with OD in the game..i think this was pretty noticable because OD is someone schaub trust more then ne more after dre..the catches he made (prior to the injury) to me put him on that clark type level and we all know how good a blocker clark is..plus with the injury he had 1.5 years is a better amount of time to recover the his what like 9 months or so..i think they got this one right and will work in someone else in 2 TE sets to do the blocking
hopefully casey
so its not 100% obvious which TE is staying in

Why so upset
We got the guy relatively cheap and I’m guessin guaranteed is about 10 million. You guys are acting like we broke the bank. After some of the ridiculous te contracts by davis and winslow this seems like an okay deal. He came on strong last year and our offense plays to full potential when he’s in there. I know he’s got some injury issues but he seemed like his old self last year the second half of the season. And he’s a great receiving te, we always run outta double tight sets so having one in there to block and one to catch passes is a staple of our offense.

The problem I have with it is that,
we have a younger version of him already on the team. James Casey. As of right now we have 5 tight ends on the squad. I expect Hill to be cut just for the fact that he can’t stay healthy… but what is the purpose of drafting all of these guys when we have zero intention of using them. Just seems like wasted draft picks now.
wasted draft picks
i remember saying that the second we drafted them
u can never have too many te's
We have a lot cuz u need a lot. On goalline usually 3 are in the package not to mention their use on special teams. The position is surely one of the most versatile on the roster and u need depth for a position that can do a few different things.
by texan80 on Mar 3, 2011 1:36 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
with the 34 as our D now
all those special team TEs can now be depth LBs

Exactly.
Casey is OD 2.0
Every time the ball is thrown to him, he’s caught it. Sometimes with one hand just like OD.
He’s obviously a better blocker than OD just for simple fact he’s the back up FB
Casey has fourteen career catches...
Not exactly a whopping sample size. I get that people like him because he went to Rice, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
I like him because
at any chance he’s given, he’s produced.
schaub and od
And in the last 5 games schaub when od was fully recovered schaub threw for over 300 4 times with the only exception being the game against jax where we ran the whole second half and he still put up 250.

If we fail to re-sign Vonta...
Does Casey now start at FB?
lets see..
takes cush’s athletic ablity and make him more of a guy that takes on FB or G..check..take Marios away and make him more a 2 gap guy so he can hold up the line for the OLB to make plays..check…take thors hammer and make him injured because we completley devalued vonta..PERFECT!
understood..
i said more of, because he NEVER was in the 43
To be fair...
That’s how Cushing aught to be used. They even talked about needing that before the draft; a 260-lb. SLB should be blowing up FBs.
Ugh
I had the same thought and I certainly hope not. Let the guy play his natural position….you know, the one he shined at in college.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I came here to congratulate you guys on the signing...
Evidently, that’s not what you want to hear. I know he was injured last year, but once he came back, it seemed like he was back to his regular form. He is the #2 receiving option for Schaub after Andre, isn’t he? I get that maybe he’s not the best blocking TE, but you use him in formations that suit his strength.
13.
It's not so much that we don't want him here.
We all love OD. He’s great, but we have younger guys at that position that we’ve been drafting for a while now… and a lot of us feel that we could have used that money on the other side of the ball to help our defense get better.
Yeah
It’s nothing against OD the player, it’s all about the money.
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter | SB Nation Houston | Battle Red Blog
Texans fans have become a group who's default setting is to assume that whatever the front office does is wrong and bitch about it
"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
Like the others guys have said
We all love OD but there are two great big concerns that we have. First, he’s had 3 ACL surgeries in his career. Second, we have MAJOR holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball since we’re switching to a 3-4 (well actually we would still have major holes in a 4-3 but we have more now). We were all hoping that cap money would be spent to bring in some stud defensive FA’s, but every penny we spend puts us further away from that happening.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Does anyone actually know how serious a problem the salary cap is or would be to us?
‘Cause if not, I really don’t understand why it’s bad to re-sign OD. I totally agree with Hydroshock and anyone else saying, that our 2 TE sets are far less predictable with OD on the field. This is not a huge contract. I mean 5,5 mill. a year is a fair price for our second best Schaub-target. And in the worst case scenario 6 mill. guaranteed is not too much to cut him if he gets injured again.
If the signing of OD will be the reason for not signing FA’s or not having enough money to fix the D in some other way, I will join in the choir of haters of this signing. I want some FA signings on D as bad as anyone here, and I most certainly not welcome the idea of a starting Safety duo named Nolan & Nowhere Man. But untill then I will not be angry just because I wanted some other things to happen prior to this signing.
It will all depend on the new CBA
Owners are asking for another billion of the top and to lower the % of revenue that goes into the salary pool for players. If the owners get any sort of win the cap should be smaller. No idea if there would be a mechanism to grandfather parts of contracts signed under old CBA in.
That’s really the risk with these signings, although none of them have been large enough to cause big problems I don’t think….but no one really knows how the salary cap will look.
"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
In that case
I guess it’s too early to say, if signing OD is a bad move, when we only look at the financial perspective, right?
I think the team feels fairly confident they know where things will end up
None of the deals have been huge, and are probably structured to make them easy to get out of. We could guess wrong, but more than likely they have a pretty good handle on how they can handle the cap and a plan/budget for FA if it happens.
It’s hard to judge any deal until your a good ways into it.
"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
Untill proven a financial failure
I will just continue liking the OD signing, then
No way the cap goes down imho
its not like the nfl is struggling like hockey was. Its making boatloads of money.
Is it better to live as a monster or die as a hero?
So forget the OD contract for a minute. We resigned Derrick Mollasses Ward
So does that make Ben Tate the 3rd string back? If so why did we draft him in the 2nd round at all if we were not going to give him a chance to play?
I don't see it that way
as someone already stated somewhere, Tate will get the chance to take the RB#2 spot, but if he can’t we know that Ward is an ok backup. If he’s up for the task, we will cut Ward next year. No matter what, though, it seems likely, that Slaton is gone
True and it's only a one year deal so not too big a risk
but I am just surprised at some of the moves we are making
Actually I'm not so surprised at the moves we are making
I’m surprised (and disappointed, maddened and a lot of other things) at the moves we are NOT making
This is how it will go
If he scores 10-12 TDs we will all be glad they did
If he goes down for more than a couple of games we will say “See, they should have let him go.” :)
I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games
