And risk him turning into a superstar somewhere else?!

if they do let slaton go...

i’ll rejoice to not have to watch him on kick returns!

I read an article saying that the Texans Cheerleaders are the 2nd best in the league at bringing in revenue...and another one saying that a Texans tailgating group won the national competition.....at least we got those going for us!

Kick returns implies he ever moved forward once receiving the ball.

I guess that means Trindon Holliday is penciled in as KR/PR, huh?

I'm thinking this is when they announce they've resigned JJ for KR/PR

Because Holliday has no record of returning kicks/punts in the NFL.

Surprised he took only a one year deal

Wonder how much he’ll be making

little surprised on this one

Although I did see Ward saying something about wanting to get a deal done on twitter. I thought that was odd when I saw it, but it makes sense. I’m guessing this put a little money in his pocket now before a lockout and gives a little security for one year. I would assume it’s low cost.

I think Slaton goes to camp and before being cut. Probably still take a RB late..6th, 7th, or UFA.

yep

I still think Slaton gets cut. I just think they will give him a shot in camp. The young project RB is almost a guaranteed thing every year. RB’s have short life spans/get hurt a lot. They will have a young rookie or two if for nothing else than to look at for practice squad.

Signed with Broncos this year.

Not sure what kind of contract or if they still have rights to him.

I like it too

Assuming the cost is low. Ward was very productive with limited carries. That’s what you want in a #2.

Great news!

Say hello to the 3 headed monster Foster/Ward/Tate!! Whats this!? A logjam of talented running backs in Texans uni’s??! How is this possible!?

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 3, 2011 1:09 PM CST reply actions

The OD deal was okay...

This one is kind of dumb. There’s no need for Ward’s services on the team.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Mar 3, 2011 1:09 PM CST reply actions

Exactly

How quickly we forget our RB situation going into last year already? we had a traffic jam @ RB on the depth chart with Slaton, Foster, Moats, Jeremiah Johnson, Chris Henry blah blah blah then all of a sudden we find ourselves signing a recently cut Derrick Ward to fill a hole

by theSpaceCityKid on Mar 3, 2011 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

I remember everyone pissed off about it, too

But you’re right. Who knows if Slaton will improve or if Tate will be any good.

by Mike Kerns on Mar 3, 2011 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

Bringing in an aging veteran who isn't a Change of Pace

just doesn’t sit well with me.

I know Tate’s an unknown, but he was a 2nd round pick for a reason. I’d rather go with him than an antiquated glacier.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Mar 3, 2011 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

Chris Henry was a second-round pick as well.

Some of these combine warriors just flame out. It’d be one thing if Tate had played in a few games and looked good, or blown the coaches away last year in training camp. But he didn’t… If he’s healthy, he’ll have a chance to win the #2 job, and maybe we’ll look silly for signing Ward. But if not, it’s a damn nice insurance policy to have.

by Nashmeister on Mar 3, 2011 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

I'd say it's the other way around.

Not to put my trust in the old running back or anything, but having a stopgap ready in case Tate is awful coming off the surgery isn’t a bad idea.

by riversmccown on Mar 3, 2011 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

Then draft another one in the latter rounds

Depending on Ward to maintain 6.3 YPC isn’t a great move, IMO.

by UprootedTexan on Mar 3, 2011 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think they are depending on him to maintain that YPC avg

Counting on anyone to maintain a 6.3 ypc average is would be dumb. I think they are counting on him to be a decent veteran to fill in for the young guys. I prefer to having a veteran in the stable to going with a 3rd year guy(who spent most of first year on practice squad), a second year guy (who missed his whole rookie season because of injury), and a rookie.

Who says we'll carry a 4th RB?

Only reason for that is if Holliday doesn’t take the team & our 4th RB is our return specialist

I never said anything about a 4th RB

I said I prefer one vet with two young guys over three young guys with only 1 year of experience between them.

I keep waiting for the Tweet that

Leach has resigned… I have a feeling I’m going to be sadly disappointed.

by Amivy on Mar 3, 2011 1:17 PM CST reply actions

were we expecting all this front office action today

because of the impending lock out?

it's their last chance to get anything done

If it doesn’t happen today by midnight when the league year ends, then it doesn’t happen. I think that’s the case even if they extend negotiations/ no lockout.

Nice.

Glacier or not, he was damn good for us last year. Not sure how they plan to work him in, though… Is this a comment on their faith in Tate? Or maybe they’ll just run it two hundred more times this season. I’d be down with that.

by Nashmeister on Mar 3, 2011 1:26 PM CST reply actions

It's only a 1 yr deal

This season will be Tate’s opportunity to get healthy and prove he can take the #2 job in camp. He won’t obviously because they payed Ward, but it’s not about next season with Tate, it’s about the year after. Assuming he shows the proper signs of progression, Ward will not be coming back for a 3rd year. Tate will slide into the #2 and eventually push Foster for the #1 gig.

That’s my take on it.

correction

it’s not about this coming season for Tate

by Hydroshock on Mar 3, 2011 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

Also

He is the a really good pass blocker

Besides the fact that you can count on him as a positive factor (not 6yds+) but you can count on him. All I have to say about Ward signing is remember Chris Brown

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

by Barryfromtexas on Mar 4, 2011 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

Resign LEACH!

I am waiting to hear that in a headline. Not a fan of the OD signing, but the guaranteed money for him is ok. Ward’s signing really depends on how much he is getting paid for one year. It’s nice to have a stacked backfield.

by Jahon on Mar 3, 2011 1:30 PM CST reply actions

Don't hold your breath

They should lock up leach and JJ, then go heavy defense for rest of the off season. I think our first 4 picks will be all D.

Anyone see a number for ward. I’m guessing 1.5 mil

by AllenOU on Mar 3, 2011 1:42 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

me either

especially if Julio Jones is BPA at the 11th pick

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Mar 3, 2011 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see out FO drafting a WR.

It would be a secondary’s nightmare to see Julio Jones and Dre lined up across from them, but I can’t imagine us drafting him.

by Jahon on Mar 3, 2011 1:55 PM CST up reply actions

I'm worried about

our own secondary nightmare mores o than our opponents.

by Amivy on Mar 3, 2011 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

I'm the biggest Julio supporter here

But I don’t think he will be there at 11, and if he is, I’m thinking teams like New England and even ST Louis would offer attractive trade down packages, and with our D we should take the extra picks.

I’m glad ward is staying

by AllenOU on Mar 3, 2011 2:11 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

agreed...

if JJ is there, trade down a lil and pick up an extra pick to use on def

by illowaTexan on Mar 3, 2011 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

I also support getting Julio Jones

but if there’s attractive trade down option take it. Otherwise we should draft him if there isn’t any other value pick there

HOORAY SHAUN CODY!

wait what.

The Texans have reached a contract agreement with starting DT Shaun Cody. Wade Phillips thinks he can move to NT in 3-4.

disagree

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Mar 3, 2011 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

No, don't go!

Nobody else is on my side on Cody!

by Nashmeister on Mar 3, 2011 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

Well to be fair about Cody

I don’t think it’s a terrible signing because he has been our most productive NT/DT for the last couple of seasons, and Wade may very well be able to help him raise that production. I just don’t want to be stuck with him as our best option.

While my initial reaction is not overly positive, I have to reserve judgment until we see how the final roster shapes up at the position.

As for Ward, I think it’s a solid move because it’s a 1 yr deal at low cost.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
