Does Super Mario simply get credit for not being Vince Young or Reggie Bust Bush? Well, duh, obviously. Failing to address our lines would've been yet another major oversight had we gone with Young or Bust. In addition, all my concerns about Radio (not learning the playbook, not having the heart, etc.) and Bust (not able to be an actual RB) have turned out to be 100% true. But it's more than that.
Look, it's one thing to have expectations for a #1 overall pick. It's another thing to look at his body of work and see the positives instead of, "Hey, this guy doesn't have 30 gajillion sacks, so he SUCKS!" In my never humble opinion, Mario Williams has lived up to his draft status, and it'd be damn hard to convince me otherwise. Here's the pre-jump scouting report.
So, Mario, what have you done for me lately? Over the course of Super Mario's five (5) years in the NFL, he started the first 77 games of his career, finally going on the IR over the last three games of the 2010 season in order to get him healthy for 2011. Look at that number again: 77 starts to begin his career. Over that time, he accumulated 48 sacks, averaging nearly 9 per season, and he's become one of the best defensive ends against the run over his career. He's accumulated these stats while suffering a series of maladies.
There are times when Mario can absolutely dominate a game. I was unable to find anything meaningful from the 2007 match-up against the Saints when he had Bust literally pissing himself in the backfield. Bust pulled himself out of the game for fear of getting hit. Again.
The best part? I don't think we've seen the best of Mario Williams. I mean, look at who his Defensive Coordinators have been. Richard Smith? Frank Bush? Oft times, Mario has been a one-man show in getting to the QB, and if I had a dollar for every time the guy has been held, I'd have enough money to pay for the breast reduction surgery I so desperately need. Personally, I think the best is yet to come, and I think he's about to become a disruptive beast.
Mario Williams, all things considered, has been a fantastic nab by your Houston Texans, first overall pick or not.

I still think he is #1
Everyone in the world was screaming to take Bush. No one that I remember thought Williams should have been the number one.
These hands will always be rough
I wanted Ferguson
But I was more than happy to get Mario. Even living in Austin, there seemed to be more love for Bush than for Radio. Oddly, the most common explanation I heard why was because of “marketing” reasons. When I tried to explain that winning is the best marketing strategy, I was told I couldn’t be more wrong.

Dickie Justice disagrees with you.
Because in his mind, taking a mentally-retarded bust of a quarterback was still the right choice because of the buzz it would have created.

More self-loathing...
…as one of the longest David-Carr-just-needs-a-solid-offense hold-outs I feel especially betrayed now that the reality has finally become inescapable that he was just lazy.
I remember being perplexed as to why a QB would run out of bounds five yards behind the line of scrimmage with no one within three yards of him instead of throwing the ball away. It never OCCURRED to me that the jackass would rather lose five yards for the team than hurt his completion percentages. Sadly methinks that was the reality.
Yeah, I’m bitter… hate may be overstating it a bit (I hope)…

You're not alone
I was a #8 apologist for a while myself. Then I started noticing the same tendencies to run out of bounds behind the line and inability to see open receivers (not that we had many back then) not named Andre Johnson.
I think it was the contract extension that turned disgust into hate for me.

Jerry Rice disagrees
;)
We are all important to each other, and because of this we have a purpose. - Daniel Black (Yes, that's me)
If Andre gets the years JErry did,
he wont be able to disagree… Andre is on a pace to break Jerry’s records…. mind you if he stays healthy, He almost became the first WR to have back to back to back 1500 yd seasons is only the second WR to do it back to back, Jerry Rice is the other. So he is definitely comparable to Jerry.

Through their age 29 seasons
Rice: 9072 yards, 93 TDs
AJ: 9164 yards, 50 TDs
AJ has an extra year on Rice. Still, aside from the TDs, which is more a component of who’s throwing you the ball (Joe Montana vs. David Carr), that’s not too shabby at all.

Throw another name in there at age 29, anyone
AJ is not blazing his own trail as Rice did, but he looks very favorable to the rest of the world.

You think that means we couldn't have messed it up anyways?
Even so, if someone literally held a gun to our heads and forced us to pick him it’s easily still our biggest draft success.
Matt Millen reminds me how amazing the world is.
Amazing that, for all his complete idiocy, Charlie Casserly was – by a significant margin – not the worst GM of all time.

Mario is 4??? Besides Dre and Meco,, who's the other one????
Who was the first to see a cow and think "I wonder what will happen if I squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out?
Dre is the only one that obviously jumps out at me being ranked higher than Mario
I would probably have Mario #2.

I disagree with that idea
we have a few talented players….and gaping holes of suck everywhere else. You don’t need 11 stars, but you do need guys who are at least competent at their job.

well, between that
and Glover Quin never allowing touchdowns, we must have shut down opponents’ passing games last season. I’ll have to check the numbers, but I think we were pretty good in the secondary.

It's official
I’m giving up on seeing Eric Winston in the top ten draft successes….
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
I just don't see him appearing in the top three of bfd's official list
Unless the rules allow for extra bonus points for doing radio shows. Maybe he has incriminating photos of bfd and he’s using that as leverage to get a favorable ranking. But, he has never been anything better than an average starter and I would think that to make the top three, a player would need to receive some sort of recognition as one of the best at his position. Like OD. He’s a stud. He has been down and come back. And, he was #4. Winston is really only famous for his radio appearances, which are many, I know…
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
So...
What three do you have remaining?

Your in a tough spot bfd
This is the Texans we’re talking about. They’ve only been around for nine drafts? And, over half of those were GMed by Charlie Casserly. Look at the 2004 draft. Besides Dunta and Babin, who are those guys? Oh, Glenn Earl, I think he might have had some playing time on those losing teams,
whoopie!
I guess Winston is in there with the top three. argghhhh! But, beating out OD! OD has been one scary offensive threat for the Texans with and without Carr.
It’s your list. I wonder what photos he has on you…
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Recognition?
As in, pro-bowl honors? C’mon Rip. You know better than that.
I would say Winston was among the top RT's in the league two years ago
He had a great season in 2009. 2010 was a little rocky at times. He definitely deserves to be high on the list, but he shouldn’t be higher than Mario. Sure, Winston was a third rounder so you get bonus points for getting a guy who locks down a position for years to come later in the draft. That doesn’t supplant Mario being one of the better players at his position in the league for me though.
"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds

Winston definitely makes it at #3. Then DeMeco at #2 and 'Dre at #1
I’d guess OD doesn’t make it because we haven’t gotten as much production out of him, due to injuries and such.

God blessed Texas, but he has forsaken the Texans
I think this deserves to be #1,
even over ’Dre.
Here’s the thing: We could have drafted Reggie Bust or VY. Both are massive busts. AJ was a no-brainer when we drafted him, Mario wasn’t.
Mario is an All-Pro DE. Sure, injuries have slowed him down, but he always gets a high number of sacks per season. Ever since he’s come into the league, he’s in the top 5 or 6 in total sacks over the past 4 or 5 seasons, which is impressive, considering 3-4 OLB’s are getting most of the sacks.
I guess I can see Cush going above Mario, but not AJ. He’s our best player, and a future hall of famer, but he was a no-brainer at the time. Mario was a tough choice to make.
"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too
close kissin his!"- Sir Charles to Kenny Smith.
I believe I have figured it out BFD
There is a tie in there somewhere. No way Winston, OD, DeMeco or ‘Dre don’t make it. I’ll revise my prediction with OD and Winston tying for #3, with DeMeco at #2.
When can we expect Zac Diles to show up?
Clearly his cost-effectiveness is way more valuable than Mario Williams eating up precious payroll space. If you had a whole team of Zac Dileses, you could have an NFL defense that actually pleased Jerry Richardson!

BRB is truly a cut above...
If one was to, hypothetically, accidentally, mis-click their mouse and wind up on one of the articles posted by some Comical hack, one would, again hypothetically, be APPALLED at the level of mindless still-stuck-in-the-middle-of-last-seasons-disaster front office bashing mindset.
The off-season has been the only time (to date) when Texans fans can be happy and optimistic and these dooshnuzzles choose to throw away the happy times on bitching and whining and grrrrrrrrrrrinding on what a dumbass Smithiak is, how the team sucks, Kubiak should have been fired, blah blah blah blah…
For those of us that have chosen to inflict ourselves with Texans fanhood AND who like to try to maintain some hope, this place is one of the only shimmering oasis…s available… Which is not to say that there isn’t the occasional turd-floating-in-the-punchbowl here, but for the most part there is some rational discourse wrapped around the bomb-throwing.
