The first pick of the 2nd Round in the glorious 2006 draft was a linebacker out of Alabama, DeMeco Ryans.  At the time, I thought Ryans to be a solid but not spectacular pick.  Having watched a lot of USC football, I was actually a fan of taking LenDale White with the pick, largely because I couldn't handle watching Ron "Three Pies and a Cloud of Meringue" Dayne three-yard-gain his way through another season again once it was apparent Domanick Williams' chances of returning were nearing nil.  But, all things considered, I was more than happy to have Ryans on board  Of course, in the 6th Round, we nabbed the unforgettable Wali Lundy.  Wait, who?

Here's an absolutely fascinating take by a scout on Ryans before we jump together.

Star-divide

Ryans announced his presence with authority in his first game, tallying 12 solo tackles in a striking debut.  DeMeco would go on to collect 156 tackles for the season, 126 of which were solo, to wind up second in the league.  Ryans' season would earn him the 2006 Defensive Rookie of the Year, making him the first Houston Texans' one-time winner in team history.  In 2007, Ryans would put up another fantastic season with 128 tackles, and he not only earned a Pro Bowl slot, but he was named an NFL All-Pro.  Ryans would also make the Pro Bowl in 2009.

Cap'n Meco has been a leader on and off the field.  He graduated cum laude from Alabama and continues to give to his alma mater.  Obviously, Ryans' 2011 will be huge after his Achilles injury suffered in 2010.  Ryans has been one of my favorite Texans since he entered the league, and I'd love to see him hang up the cleats after a 12-year career with your Houston Texans.

Can't wait to live that down

is it more of a testament to me not paying attention, or people not paying attention to you? That’s what I’d like to know.

It moves out of the way for him Red Sea style.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

I love Meco

But I probably have him third or fourth on my list behind Mario and maybe Winston. Of course this is your pointless list and not mine, so you get a free pass.

In many ways

The 2006 draft represents the high water mark of the Texans organization.

Needs more nose tackle.

MECO!

WOOT!

I think DeMeco is going to come back strong this year.

One thing I’ve noticed is that when you read the blogs, his recovery seems bleak and unlikely because of information people have been able to dig up on past Achilles injuries. Yet not only does the team seem unconcerned, so do the doctors that have been interviewed on the radio.

I can’t wait to see how it pans out but I’m hoping for the best.

Wait, you wanted to replace Dayne...

With the only player in the league who could beat him at a pie-eating contest?

Dayne

I don’t think we picked up Dayne until the 2006 season. I foolishly wanted White as well.

I read the most depressing thing today.

“It doesn’t get any better than this. It’s (draft) the most impact I can make on our team short term and long term…
- General manager Rick Smith, when asked about his preparation for the draft.

by Ivan A on Apr 28, 2011 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

To be fair.

He didn’t say positive impact.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
