Sophie's Choice: Corner, Safety, Or Nose Tackle
The 2011 NFL Draft is in the books. Free agency is still to come...sometime. Assume with me that Bob McNair comes to you and says, "Stalwart Fan Of The Houston Texans, I have precisely enough money to add a starter, via free agency, at one position." With the three most glaring holes on the roster appearing to be cornerback, free safety, and nose tackle, which position are you filling with Uncle Bob's money?
Further assume that by choosing your position to fill, you're necessarily going with the status quo at the other positions. In other words, if you add a starter at nose tackle, you're going with what's already on the roster to address free safety and cornerback.
What do you choose? And what specific player are you throwing money at?

Cornerback
we got stars in the front 7 and GQ will be at least average.
and the clouds opened up and God said "I Hate you Texans Fans."
c'mon man
Should be on the list of sayings in the sports world that gets said way too often without really meaning anything. Everytime I hear that anymore it’s like nails on the chalkboard… I mean seriously, pink shirts and parachute pants were cool once upon a time, but everything goes out of style eventually… The dudes from ESPN rode that puppy straight into the ground and then did a little dance on it, dug it up and then danced on it some more.
Whatever
If there was a cliche saying or word that was overused….
Also, dude.
Whatever.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Since NT is up there
does that mean that we don’t believe Wade Phillips when he says that he loves Earl Mitchell?
I don't see this poll as a reflection of Wade at all
Wade is here to do a job and that is boost up the players and get them to play to their optimum. He can’t get rid of them all overnight. Some will have to remain and he will have to count on their contribution.
In the meantime, BRB fantasizes as pseudo GMs….
I’m picking CB, because that is a skill position that is the weakest/impact position, IMO.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Oh that is exactly what I chose,
but I did it because I’m naïve and believe our coaches when they say they like someone.

Aggresive as they always are!!! looks like it will be none of the above. but CB is my choice
GM Rick Smith on the team’s strategy in free agency: "Without trying to divulge what our game plan is, I would say that generally speaking we’re going to be as aggressive as we always are," Smith said. "We’re chomping at the bit."

Going with the crowd apparently...
I voted for CB… I think that Wade can make do with what he’s got at NT… I think that we have some talent that can be re-purposed for safety. But CB is kinda’ the top of the speedy food-chain and you just have to bite the bullet and PAY for that resource or shut up and stop pretending to care about winning.

According to Wade he feels good at NT
Now safety or CB… I’ll go CB because safety can be filled much more easily.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
Yes the Texans have done that so well so far

I voted CB of course
With Nnamdi on the market, he’s the “best player available”. We have a need, we have the revenue, and with his experience, hopefully he could make the ones we have actually look somewhat like NFL corners. I would love to have a couple of SS/FS’s because we really have no depth there at all. But if we’re talking a big signing, I’m sticking with CB. And also, since the NFL seems to make us play Oakland every single year now, it would be nice have him on our team and hear the boo’s when he goes back to Oakland.
There are options besides safety?
I think I’m being trolled.
I would say CB..
And with that meaning one of these in the respective order (not even considering Nnamdi, too unrealistic) :
Jonathan Joseph
Carlos Rogers
Chris Carr
Antonio Cromartie
Ike Taylor
Josh Wilson
Richard Marshall
Drayton Florence

I think Quintin Mikell would be a very good player in Houston. He’s very good against the run and he’s improved in pass defense the last couple of years..
FS: GQ
SS: QM

QM and Josh Wilson

I say free safety cause we can move Quin to strong safety, but we could always go strong safety instead
Whichever position we sign should make Quin move to the other one
Murphy’s 20th Military Law:
If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid
First off...
I would politely disagree with him that Free Safety is a bigger need at this point than strong safety, being that Quin is supposedly moving to FS, and most would assume he could at least adequately fill that void. I would also wonder why he had not heard about that possibility yet.
Secondly, I would ask him what his coaches thought, as I am not a professional coach, nor a professional evaluator of NFL talent.
Assuming he still wanted my opinion, I would suggest a starting level or better CB, as we still have major wounds to lick after thinking you can put babies out on the islands and get away with it in today’s league.
Now, were strong safety to be an option, I’d seriously consider that as my answer, as that would likely be a much cheaper option, leaving more in the coffers for the other positions.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Again if we sign a free safety, we could still move Quin to strong safety
Wade’s scheme requires twin safeties more than anything, so Quin could plug in at either spot
Murphy’s 20th Military Law:
If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid

Again?
Just because you said it?
Thanks, but I’ll stick to the professionals.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Well....
I’ve only heard “professionals” mention the possibility of Quin playing safety, we just assume they’re talking about free safety. But for every time i’ve heard a report that the Texans were considering making Quin a safety, i’ve heard another saying they plan to keep him at corner, who knows?
Probably true.
Although, has there ever been a CB to SS conversion at the pro level?
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Probably not
And honestly I don’t think it’ll happen this time either, just pointing out that so far there’s been so much smoke around who’s going to play where that we really don’t know diddly squat.
didn't ronnie lott play all three?
CB, FS, SS?

Pretty sure Rod Woodson did too.
At HoF-caliber levels as well.
Not that Quin is a quarter of the talent Lott or Woodson were, but the transition’s surely be done successfully on more than one occasion.
GET A SILK BAG FROM THE GRAVEYARD DUCK TO LIVE LONGER.
Not sure about Lott...
I didn’t have the knowledge when he played. Pretty sure Woodson was CB and FS though. Some might think he played SS just because he hit people, but I think he was always free.
Either way, my point was that generally you don’t see CB to SS in one move. The SS move is for when they’ve completely lost a step but can still contribute.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
the line between SS and FS is being blurred more an more every year
I would rather have two good safeties who can cover and help with the run a little. Then one good coverage guy and another guy who struggles if he’s not playing around the box.
"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds
true
….but the box safety is becoming more of a relic even with schemes that call for a “traditional” SS. Even if the scheme calls for a guy to be around the box, he still needs some decent coverage skills or teams will find a way to exploit him. I think Pollard is a perfect example of that. The Texans brought him close to the line and even sent him on blitzes to try and hide him in coverage, but teams still found ways to exploit him.
"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds
In reality
We do not know that GQ will be a good FS – most of us think he will – but we don’t know. What we do know – if we move him, the best CB we know we have (if he stays) is Jason Allen. That is still scary and why I voted CB. I would love to get all three (if the NT is a true space-eating NT)

Give up all the Texans’ 2012 Draft Picks, give him some reps in Training Camp, and Voila! You have a 7th TE!
Cornerback,CB,CB,CB,CB.........
Considering in prior years, excluding last year when our CB’s sucked, we have managed to field a few competitive units on D by plugging in who we had at safety and on the line while having decent CB’s(Dunta in his prime and Reeves).
Get a shutdown CB and let Wade do his thing with what we have now and we should be all right.

After Nnamdi & J. Joseph
the value of FA corners takes a steep dive. The Free Safety class of FA’s is lousy. Therefore, if they don’t get one of those first two guys I mentioned, I’d go get a legit NT. Maybe Cofield (NYG) or Mebane (SEA). Ngata & Soliai already got franchised, so count them out. Mike Patterson (PHI) is another one to keep an eye out for.

We dont need that kind of veteren leadership
I can see two approaches. Go all in for Scrabble, and try to make a run this year, or get someone in his declining years to hold down the fort for a year or two while we bring along our young DB’s.
Not only do we need that vet leadership at CB, I think we need one at safety almost as badly.
Make a run this year....
ummm, pass me that drank, please….
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
I would be happy with either actually
Even if we get a middle of the road veteran (doesnt have to be a first tier player, but a solid player) at both CB and safety to help guide the youngsters, I think we can make substantial progress this year. It doesnt mean we will because there is a lot of uncertainty (how much training camp to introduce a new system, ’Meco and Barwin coming back, etc.), but I dont think it would be unrealistic to go 9-7, or maybe even 10-6. That would be good enough to keep me (reasonably) happy, especially if I saw promise for further improvement in 2012.
Have to go with Corner
We need a veteran out there who isn’t Jason Allen.
Also Wade has already stated that he believes the front 7 is solid
So it’ll be either CB or S to address in FA.
Again, what they say on camera
is probably much different than what they say behind closed doors. Wade isn’t the type to come out and say “We gotta replace Cody/Amobi/Mitchell because they’re fucking mediocre.”
True
but he’s not going to go with a young secondary again. We all know how that turned out. I’d generally say Wade has been true to his words on camera. He said he would address the front 7 in the draft, which he did so I don’t see why he would end up not addressing the secondary through FA.
Haha true.

My vote: CB
Since moving Quin to FS seems to be a foregone conclusion now, we definitely need a #1 CB. I’m less worried about the Safety position since Wade’s comments indicate he doesn’t need an in-the-box safety, meaning he will basically field 2 Free Safeties. I could see Jason Allen, Troy Nolan, or even Shiloh Keo being sufficiently competent at these spots. Also, the CB class is deeper than the Safety class, thereby relatively cheaper I hope (then again, Demand is sure to be higher too).
Also, a CB means we have the option of not throwing Kareem, or even Harris, to the wolves again. Not so immediately, at least.
As for NT, Wade seems to really like Earl Mitchell.
Both but CB takes precedence
I could make it if we came out of free agency without a Safety. I prob would drink myself into a coma if we didn’t pick up at least one veteran corner.
Who was the first to see a cow and think "I wonder what will happen if I squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out?
So you think we can go into the season with just Quin, Nolan & Keo???
We need more safeties unless we’re moving another CB to Safety

If we go after a corner
I’d prefer it to be somebody who is used to having a terrible pass rush in front of them. This is why I’m not as high on Taylor as some.
I voted cornerback
Quin is moving to a safety role in Wade’s defense leaving our #1 cornerback as Kareem Jackson. While I think Jackson will improve in year two, I don’t want him covering #1 WRs. Get someone to stabilize the corps and bump everyone down to the appropriate level. I don’t expect Scrabble, but I’d at least like to hear they offered him 3 years at $10-15 mil per season….if Joseph or Wilson or Marshall or someone of their ilk is the consolation prize, fine….but I want to see them go after the cornerback.

Corner its the single biggest need we have,gq will help alot and k-jax I think, as well as the rest of our D were made out to seem worst tjan they are. We have a real dc now. Not just one of garys pic nic buddies.

Has to be CB.
NT is fine. I think Mitchell will be good enough, considering Wade really, really likes him.
GQ’s best position is FS. Even if he has a shitty first year there, he can’t handle not playing Nickel CB.
Because of GQ’s inability to play outside CB, we have to get another CB. I think Harris will be a very good Nickel CB, Kareem will hopefully have a solid year, but then we have a hole. I like Jason Allen. I think he could be a decent #2 CB, but Kareem needs to be #2 this year. We need a CB. Ike Taylor is a guy we should consider. He’s around 30, so he’s not too old, but he’s young enough to give Kareem more time to develop against weaker competition at the #2 spot.
The pipedream is obviously Scrabble, but we aren’t getting him. Smith doesn’t have what it takes to bring in an elite FA like Scrabble. However, I think he can bring in Ike.
Worst case scenario is that we get nobody. Kareem stays as our #1 CB, which isn’t life-altering, but it’s not good. I thnk Jason Allen will be the #2 CB, with Harris and Roc being the Nickel and Dime CBs. I honestly do not have a problem with Allen being the #2 CB. I have a problem with Kareem not being the #2 CB, because he needs to be. He’s not ready to cover the other team’s go-to-guy every game. That’s why we need Ike Taylor or Scrabble. Not because of Harris or Allen being mediocre, but because K-Jax needs to be #2, and he can’t be #2 with Allen and Harris on the team. At least not this year.
"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too
close kissin his!"- Sir Charles to Kenny Smith.
With the talk about "twin" safeties in Wades 34
do you think Jason Allen could play S with Quin? Allowing us to devote funds to a top notch CB and still have pretty good coverage over the top?

That is possible
Definitely would be the more “cost effective” option, at least at Safety

Not to mention we could always go with the very cost effective route at NT & sign Blaine Sumner as an UDFA

I voted Safety
I don’t want just any safety. In all honesty not one of can predict what sort of safety GQ will be. I want an elite safety. After Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, who else is considered elite? Ike Taylor is an O.K. corner. Still better than anyone on the roster right now, but really he’s maybe slightly above average. Troy Polamalu makes him better. I can’t name a Ravens DB. Ed Reed makes them all better. He missed 6 games this season and still tallied 8 interceptions.
A great safety makes everyone in the secondary better.
