Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

"To be honest,'' Schatz said, "I don't think Mario Williams as outside linebacker is that crazy. The strongside linebacker [in Phillips' defense] only rarely drops into coverage and the weakside linebacker almost never drops into coverage. Last year, our game charters had Ware in coverage on six passes. That's it. [Antwan] Applewhite, the weakside linebacker in San Diego, was in coverage on just nine. Williams makes more sense there than as a five-technique end.'' The five-technique end has run and rush responsibilities and lines up on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle.

According to the numbers crunched by FootballOutsiders.com, Ware got home more than Williams in the past three seasons, but both had good impact disrupting the quarterback. Ware had 47 sacks to Williams' 30, but they had an identical 120 hits and hurries of the passer.

Yeah, that's the rub.

But I applaud King for putting it out there. I’m guessing he had a whole different take until his boy came back and said it might be a good move, so he redirected when he actually… get this… thought about it. We couldn’t get the same love from Warren and Wille on NFLN, sadly.

I found the whole situation humorous. Everyone was shocked by wade’s announcement, but when you revisit matt’s post, he nailed it a long time ago.

Very true

I can see Mario at either OLB or DE, but MDC easily made the case of where Mario SHOULD go.

Also, I’ve been jonesing to use the word “sockpuppet” for purely personal reasons. Not here, but I’m simply amazed at the lengths people will go through to make themselves look good. /no Adams

At the same time, we all thought the DE was more plausible

bc Wade said that first. Then we drafted JJ Watt and he changed his plan i think

I just meant that we (as a SB Nation Blog) mostly focused on how it would work with him as a 5tech DE because WP was quoted to say he would use him that way. Not that NOBODY speculated otherwise.

A large part of the difference in sack totals

Comes from our lack of inside pressure. Ware had Ratliff caving in the pocket and the Texans had a nice VIP suite for Peighton or anyone else to seamlessly slide up into to avoid Mario and Antonio and choose which smoldering CB to pick on next. I like Earl Mitchell at nose and I think hell have the starting gig by mid camp.

by theSpaceCityKid on May 12, 2011 6:30 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Ratliff only had 6 more pressures than Okoye and one more sack

Okoye also had more QB hits than Ratliff. No, I’m not saying Okoye is better than Ratliff. It’s not even close either, but I am saying the no pressure from the middle thing is overblown somewhat. I would love to see a breakdown of how quickly QB’s got rid of the ball against us vs. other defenses. My feeling is that our coverage was so bad last year, and our scheme so transparent, that QB’s were able to go to their first read quickly before our pressure had much of a chance to get there.

Yes, usually the the pass rush needs to help the secondary, but if the QB is consistently able to get rid of the ball on his 3rd, or even 5th, step of his drop it’s very hard for the pressure to get there. That was part of the reason for the spread of west coast offense. Get the ball out of the QB’s hands quickly before he can be sacked.

by papabear on May 13, 2011 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Ya maybe last year.

but since Amobe has beenin the league he has like 11 sacks and for the same period of time (since 2007) Ratliff has almost 20. Im just talking about what has allowed Ware to get the stats over his career so far was having the next best pass rusher at NT. The Texans got smoked deep A LOT last year and that takes a little bit of time to develop, and I just know from the eye test that whenever the QB wasnt throwing a quick route he had a beautiful pocket to slide into and avoid the outside pressure. Hence Antonio Smiths great pressures but inability to “finish”.

-mitmil22

by theSpaceCityKid on May 13, 2011 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't want to get into an Amobi debate because that has been beat to death and my bigger point was about how easily it was for WR to get space for the QB to get him the ball quickly

Sure we were beat deep many times last year….but that is a small % of pass plays per game. The largest % of deep balls thrown was 22% last year. So out of 35 or so pass plays a game the deep ball is only coming 5 or 6 times per game. Also if a WR gets a clean release, or isn’t jammed at all, and runs a straight go route right by your DB it doesn’t take that long to develop. The QB can get rid of the ball in around three seconds and still beat you deep down the field.

Side note Amobi’s pressure #‘s have been towards the top of the league for the last few years according to PFF. They aren’t perfect, and there is a level of subjectiveness to what they count as a pressure. I think our pass rush was inconsistent at times, but I think you will see that with a lot of teams. I don’t think our pass rush was as non-existent as some people seem to think it was.

"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds

by papabear on May 13, 2011 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand your point but my point that Amobi isnt THAT bad

especially at rushing the passer but that our horrid secondary makes it hard. MY point was only that having a top notch pass rusher (who is far better than Okoye) has contributed greatly to Wares sack totals. Maybe I should go further to align our points and say that the Cowboys competent coverage contributed as well.

is this normal?

Lately ive been gettin real pumped up about how sick nasty our front 7 is gonna be next season and i realized the investment we have put into it-

Three 1st round picks (Mario, Cush, Watt)
Two 2nd rounders (Barwin, Cody) not to menton Reed, another 2nd rder as depth/competition
A DROY probowl caliber captain in the middle with Meco and a damn good 5th rd player in Antonio Smith
And all this has actual quality depth behind it w Sharpton. Mitchell and Reed being qood football players. Johnny likey.

by theSpaceCityKid on May 12, 2011 6:44 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

plus

Another 1st rder that i think will do well as a 5tech end, Amobi Okoye, and Mark Anderson will both probably be serviceable starters for most of the teams in the league. Another guy i hope to see as part of the DE rotation is Tim Bulman. I always thought that guy not only brings it whistle to whistle but hes effective in being a handful for OL, opening blitz lanes for Meco and the gang.

Interesting thought

And I think it’s another chicken or/and the egg thing. Our defensive coaching sucks ass, and pretty much always has. OTOH, you have Kubiak and Dennison way up coaching offensive players, and they’ve also been adept at finding talent. Defensively, and aside from Mario (as was touched upon the other day), no player has progressed noticeably after their rookie year. We don’t get those improvements like we see from the Arian Fosters and Chris Myerseseseses and those types of guys you see on offense.

Good point

I remember watching the earliest Texans games and wondering why the safeties sucked. It seems they were always out of position or missed tackles.

I do believe this will change with Wade – a good DC knows he needs a good Safety – because a good safety can make up for shortages in several areas.
