SB Nation: Texans' 2011 Team Needs
Joel Thorman devotes a few words to what your Houston Texans did in the 2011 NFL Draft, and where they may go from here.
An unnamed voice from BRB chimes in too and could very well cause your head to explode with the brilliance emanating from his remarks.

After the draft
I might actually prefer weddle to scrabble. I’m sure I’m in the minority, and he most likely won’t be an UFA. One can dream.
If we signed weddle and Jon Joseph I would literally crap myself
by AllenOU on May 18, 2011 5:07 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Neither one might even be available
Asomugha is the Holy Grail for our defense right now. If by some miracle we can sign him, Glover Quin & Jason Allen might end up being our starting safeties with Scrabble, Kareem, Harris, Carmichael, McCain, & McManis being our CBs

If we try and be realistic
It’s more of a josh Wilson or ike Taylor, and that doesn’t excite me.
If the choice was scrabble OR Eric weddle, and the price was the same… Scrabble. But the price wouldnt be the same

fixed
…with Scrabble, Kareem, Harris, Carmichael,McCain,& McManis being our CBs

He was saying Allen would be at safety with Quin
and is Molden still considered a CB? I thought he was team manager..

Vance Joseph & Wade Phillips like McCain's upside
They believe he’s just been coached badly. He’s not going anywhere

like hearing this
although all of our CBs need to be coached up, most of them lack the top end speed mccain does have..which in a lot of cases can make up for bad mechanics
i dont see
allen being a safety..slow doesnt = safety…hes def not a FS because the lack and speed along with lack of range..and in the SS position he isnt going to be putting fear into ne offense against the run..id much prefer nolan back there,..i thought, although he was def lost at times, he can make up for it with his ability to be a magnet to creating turnovers
another note on allen
was that to me he was j reeves but slightly better at turning his head around..for the most part he just attached himself to the wideouts hip and tried to mirror him..but still left holes for the qb to throw the ball to..doesnt really lend itself to showing play rec which is a huge must playin in the backend
He ran a sub-4.40 in 2006...
And played FS in college. Might even be a better option than Quin…
Amusing quote from NFLdraftscout that just sums up how relative it all is:
CB Jason Allen intercepted three passes with Miami and was waived. He intercepted three passes with the Texans and was praised.

Shiloh Keo is being praised by Pancakes today, you-know-where

Ah, balls.
So much for that pick, then.

i have a really
hard time believing he could put that kind of number on the clock now and im sure by ur eye u saw there wasnt a ton of speed there..plus if we are going to go bak to predraft evals of ’06, lets say that his durabilty issues playing in our “twin” safeties responsiblities of having to be in run support would come into effect
Allen's problem at CB
Isn’t speed, it’s his high center of balance and stiff hips… he can run a straight line with the best of them. He’d be better off at safety because for one he wouldn’t be in as much man coverage, and when he is he’d usually be going up against a TE or RB which he can handle fine. As for playing deep zone, he’d probably be pretty good at it because of his straight line speed… he can get from point ‘A’ to ‘B’ about as fast as anyone we have…
Live up to the Space City moniker and...
Shoot for the stars, Rick. Think more Scrabble and less Ike Taylor (who has stated he wants back to Pittsburgh) and Carlos Rogers (who has declined over the past few seasons and is in no way, shape, or form a #1 cornerback).

What the Texans really need is a CBA in place and the 4 year FA rule
Joseph or R. Marshall + Weddle would be the ideal.

Stop settling
That way we can cut back on the bleach and get back to clean alcohol.
Blind fandom is all I got left.
He also said,
Whatever happens happens,he thinks he is underrated at the position and if you put tape on of the top 5 corners he is right there with them,i lold when he said it but yeah,He also said he isn’t going to take a home town pay cut to stay with pittsburgh.so take that how you will…

We need
Scrabble. It is more than just a high need at corner and vet mentor for rookies. It’s a huge statement to change the Texans going foreword.
If they don’t get him, and they are not in the playoffs this season, it’s gonna take fully nude, lap dancing, smoking hot cheerleaders IN the stands at no additional charge to fill the stadium in 2012 with a randomly selected fan (or fifty) receiving some full service.
I’’d mention storage towers filled with bleach, but the fans on the bleach won’t survive a tenth season of suck.
you lost me at "going foreword"

I tell you what...
If we can get out of free agency with these guys we looking good.
Allan Branch 6’6 338ILBs NT
Ike taylor
either Gerald Sensabaug or Brodney pool
im just not a
big fan of ike..i think he looks better right now for us because he was part of a great D..its not that hes this great or even above avg CB, hes really just an avg CB but the rest of the team around him makes him look better then he is..although, that bein said, even an avg CB is better then all of our below avg CBs outside of GQ
by Mike Ram on May 19, 2011 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I'm pretty sure he will be in demand, coming from a great D and he will be overpriced and likely get his price
Let me ask this question. And, please, anyone out there answer if you like. How would you compare this year’s version of Ike Taylor to the two years ago version of Dunta Robinson, when the Texans did not sign him and allowed him to be unrestricted; then he went out and scored a huge contract? Look forward to your answers to this comparison.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
well first dunta was not coming from a great D.
yea Ike will get overpayed but what corner does not nowadays?
i hear what ur saying here with the money
but if EVERYONE is getting overpaid then thats just the price of a corner right..so why not pay X amount of money towards someone that is actually worth it vs someone who is hyped to be ala drob or ike in this case
That's sound advice
but in practice not so easy to do. Every team has a different opinion of what someone is worth. That’s what makes the world go round.
Let’s look at Albert Haynesworth, for example. I don’t want to go into all the details, but I can tell you, there was only one team that thought he was worth what he got and if you asked them today, they would say he hasn’t been worth it. One example. Easy example. Not all examples are so easy.
Another example. Coming up, Mario Williams; a premier level player who is likely to have the best season of his career this coming season and will look for a good contract that will take him out to the end of his career. My opinion, the Texans need to sign him to a new contract, ASAP, before his performance skyrockets his value, or else their pocketbook will take a huge hit later. Imagine if they don’t sign him and he becomes unrestricted!
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
well if we can't get the other guy
you have to get the next best thing right? i mean i did not know he was about the same size as Nnamdi. only knock would be age but then again nnamdi is not that young either.
Ike Taylor isn't the next best thing, IMO
Nor is the next to the next best thing. He’s just a very meh cornerback who looks better because our pass defense was so terrible. Investing in him isn’t going to change a thing.
"Lord, beer me strength."
You cant just give up if we dont get Nnamdi though, either.
I think our FO will weigh the options, look at the books, the new cap situation and come up with a figure that they can comfortably offer Nnamdi without compromising our future. If he goes for way more than that, then I’m sure they look to the next tier of talent and try to get the next best player available in their eyes. Wade will use what he has when the season starts to design his schemes, if Nnamdi is a part of it I’m sure it will make his and KJax lives easier, but if not we at least need an average one with veteran experience to lead and NOT be a gaping hole for Wade to have to compensate for all the time.

I never said that
but I don’t view Ike Taylor as the parting gift. I think he’s being overrated on the site.

ok, i think the comparision
is perfect because they are so smiliar in most ways..but we NEEDED to keep drob that year..but to take ike now, would be almost takin a step back because even if Ike is a slight step up from what we have he doesnt fix nething..like u mentioned just becuase atl gave dunta the big contract didnt make him the CB he once was..same thing, i think, would happen in taking Ike..give the guy a ton of money but he doesnt play up to the how much we would be payin for
Disagree on drob.
We needed to sign a veteran FA corner, and not rely on Quin and Jackson. Not signing Cunta was absolutely the right move. He’s not good, and he wanted too much. There were other options then, and there will be this free agency, but you’re going to hear the words “settling for” a lot in both cases. The biggest difference now is, we have a good to great coordinator to make the best of whatever the players bring talent-wise.
