What do you think of the Texans Draft?

The draft response was sort of interrupted by bin Laden meeting his end. Also, I should point out, it's not true that his departing words were, "Casserly was never appreciated" as Sports Center blared in the background while they recapped the draft. It was actually last week's episode of Celebrity Apprentice with Gary Busey getting fired. Regardless, it's all meaningless in the world of NFL football, because no one respects his opinion. So, the Navy Seals, without remorse, dispensed of him and terminated the last vestiges of the Casserly support faction. (I'm bad, I know...)

So, here we are. On BRB. We voted for individual players we like or dislike. But what do you think of the Texans draft overall? Make your selection in the poll below.

I gave them a B+.

They seemed to be going after targeted players. Traded up to get Harris, etc. Whether the draft pans out as successful remains to be seen. But they seemingly had a plan and stuck to it instead of reaching for players and picking positions of wealth
.
Hell, even if they botched the draft but didn’t pick a TE it would merit a C.

WATT was a tight end at one time.... So they did get one

How things change yet remain the same… Still not pleased with Yates… hope they go six years with RFA.. so we can keep Lienart…

Doin stuff so nasty that you have to do it twice to confirm the level of nasty!!

Reed was an H-Back/TE, so they met their 2 TE per draft quota

+1

Gave them a B+ for pretty much the same reasons. Hard to tell on the players until they play a while, but they had a good plan and executed it well. If this carries over onto the field, that alone will be a big improvement in performance.

On Paper

I give it a B+. Unlike the last couple drafts, there was not a pick where I screamed “wtf!” at my screen, and I also had two fist pumps during picks, so it gets good reviews from me. On paper. Only thing holding it back from a A for me was JJ Watt. I like him as a player, I just think Quin was talent at a much greater position of need. Hopefully Watt lights it up and makes it all a non issue.

I still say we need a WO and a 3rd down Back....after we get a quality DB ( corner) through FA..

another RB

Foster/Ward/Tate/Slaton all under contract.

There isnt room for another one on the roster. We arguably have one of the deepest RB cores in the league.

Ward does

As a matter of fact, didn’t he get a Super Bowl ring with the Giants?

Well, it's an opinion. Not mine.

But, who is so tight that they can’t loosen up for a sec and give the Texans a first-blush draft grade, and answer “give it three years and I’ll give them a grade?”

Yes, my fault or credit, however you may see it for putting that answer in there, but it always puzzles me why someone can’t reach out from their box and do that.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 7:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Haha! Kernsy?

I’ll let him answer that for himself. I’m surprised that the voters who want to wait three years haven’t put their two cents in and posted about it. I wish they would, because that’s always a good conversation.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 8:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I did.

Have we ever given the Texans a bad draft grade in the Rick Smith era? Seems like every draft has been good at first glance, yet three years down the road we wind up with half a starter and a bunch of busts. Grading drafts before the players have stepped onto the field is an exercise in futility.

meh

Rick Smith fetches donuts and does some accounting

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Well the offense has done well

And we have some talent on defense…Meco, Cush, Mario, and others. He picks them, but he doesnt coach them. I am not sure how much of the problem is due to Rick and how much is coaching. I think we find out this year because everyone says Wade knows his stuff, so no more blaming coaching.

by BleachBum on May 4, 2011 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

l dunno, though

Immediate success is still probably unrealistic, but you get the sense that there’s actually a plan on both sides of scrimmage, for a change.

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I think we should see some quick results

from the players who have been here a few years already, but as you suggest, probably not from the rookies

by BleachBum on May 4, 2011 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

you are grading

the Picks themselves and the potential the players selected have in your eyes, and if you agreed with the selections. I think its a given everyone knows it will take a few years to know who they really did.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on May 4, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I gave the F

I figured if i started out with the lowest of expectations that it could only get better as the players proved they belonged. If the draft picks suck in the future well at least i didnt have my hopes up.

Open comment to the BRB writers

Would it be a good time for an open speculation thread about what’s going to happen with Vonta Leach, now that the draft is over and the Texans did not look for a FB in the draft. I suppose there are plenty of FB candidates available in the Undrafted Free Agent category. We kinda ran the gamut on speculation with James Casey and there probably isn’t any new news there. But, it’s always fun to speculate. Maybe, save that topic for a slow news day….

lf l had to put money on it, l’d say he gets re-signed

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Personally

I think he resigns with the Texans after realizing on the market no one wants to pay big bucks for a fking fullback.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on May 4, 2011 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, his asking price should come down

Good job on Smiathiak calling his bluff. Why overpay if no one else will? They need to be smarter on this. in the future. In the past, I think they did overpay in some instances. A little here and a little there, they had to try to balance the payroll vs maintaining talent at the position. I applaud the FO on how they have handle the Leach situation. I think you guys are right. They will meet somewhere lower/closer to Leach’s real value. He isn’t gone, yet.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

in fairness

in the past, they were trying to build up an entire roster from scratch. The team they inherited was completely barren. They could afford to overpay here and there, originally.

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Free agent update would be nice!

With the off-season status quo disrupted by the labor dispute and the draft complete, is anyone throwing together a targeted list of vet F/A and UDFA this team should be looking at other then the obvious? I know some have been throwing names outand also touched on some O players available but mostly skill positions.
Of course a breakdown of vets at the 4 and 6 year would be ideal since we don’t know where FA will fall until a deal is made.

As for me I hope it remains at 6 years with the rookies able to get a 3-4 year 1st contract with an option. I’m old school and anything that will foster some longevity with the team would be good.

People tell me, ‘Oh, you just drink to escape your problems.’ Well, no shit. I’d eat rat heads if it let me ditch my problems."

by Seaborn1 on May 4, 2011 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, I didn't agree with it when it was happening and I don't now

If you overpay a guy on a three or four year contract, that limits your ability to upgrade in other positions as opportunities arise.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 10:46 AM CDT reply actions

But if you have a glorified NFL Europa roster, you fill it the best you can. Extra cap room didn’t carry over to further cap room the next season, as far as l know. We were “beggars” more than “choosers” at one point. Continuity is part of the growing process, and it’s certainly been a daunting process, no?

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

three year contracts carry for three years and so on....

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

okay, they were placeholders and weren't ideal

it was still likely a better course of action than the alternative (ie: our DB corps after we let the door hit Dunta’s ass)

what are you missing here, and did you not make an earlier remark about how they have been more fiscally responsible lately?

by Cut Block on May 4, 2011 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Are these contracts guaranteed?

If we find someone better and cut these guys, do we still have to pay them?

by BleachBum on May 4, 2011 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

There's some formula where their salary is weighed against the salary cap

So, cutting them gets rid of them, but there are implications.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 4, 2011 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

The cap will be back

I’m pretty sure the Players and Owners have agreed on most points and continuing what was in place is mostly intact. I think it’s the splitting of the pie that is causing the impasse.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
