Mario Williams will play OLB

http://twitter.com/#!/McClain_on_NFL/statuses/65975027224420352

McClain says that Phillips will use Mario as the weakside OLB, which if we've taken anything from his defenses with Ware in Dallas, means he'll be a stand up DE moving all around the line. I just can't wait for that first time when a TE ends up staring down a charging Mario one on one.

Guess this means Antonio and JJ are starting and Barwin/Reed are competing for the SOLB spot.

Oh,

and I see all the names you listed above getting plenty of playing time, rotating, for situation or for rest. Although, when it comes to rest, I hope they can all be getting it at the same time on the sideline because they gave the ball back to the offense….

IF our DT can hold their own and we get our veteran corner. It definately looks good on paper.

Nothing is set in stone...

Until we get into training camp and Wade gets a chance to see these guys in different roles first-hand, it’s all speculation at this point.

by Nashmeister on May 5, 2011 9:08 AM CDT reply actions

I hope this is what happens.

Could Reed or Barwin play inside if Demeco isn’t able to come back al the way?

all* the way

Texas. Gods favorite country.

by CoolBreeze3 on May 5, 2011 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Why?

That wouldn’t make since to make DE converts and turn them into an ILB,I mean that really would hurt us more then help unless we constantly blitz the inside and outside guy which….Yeah makes no sense..

Just a thought.

I don’t pretend to know much more about football than the rules. I asked because most people are just assuming Ryans is going to be 100% with no problems. Thought maybe if one of these guys do well they could slide inside for some downs to keep Ryans from breaking again. But what do i know i am just a casual texans fanatic i know nothing about where players should play or will play.

Texas. Gods favorite country.

Why not? I'll send this idea onto Wade!

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 5, 2011 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

It's unlikely.

Barwin and Reed are both DE converts; it’s already questionable how they’ll transition to OLB in the 3-4, which is even more similar to DE. Barwin might have the athletic attributes for it, but his best asset seems to be as a pass-rusher, so it wouldn’t be utilizing his skill-set. Reed is probably more of a thumper against the run, but might lack the quickness to play inside.

Just playing around with lineups I could see

SOLB: Barwin
WOLB: Reed
NT: Mitchell
DE: Smith
DE: Mario

with Mario at SOLB

SOLB: Mario
WOLB: Reed
NT: Cody/Okoye
DE: MItchell/Okoye
DE:Smith

maybe even my guy Bulman gets some time at SOLB

SOLB: Bulman
WOLB:Barwin/Reed
NT:Mitchell
DE:Mario
DE:Smith

There are tons of other combos you could do. I love the flexibility !!!!

by BleachBum on May 5, 2011 10:53 AM CDT reply actions

I was focused on who would play NT and OLB

and just overlooked Watt. I see him more at DE, even though they say he gets snaps at NT. And I still like Mario and Smith better there as starters. But definitely if Mario is at SOLB

SOLB: Mario
WOLB:Barwin/Reed
NT:Cody/Okoye/Watt
DE:Watt/Mitchell
DE: Smith/Okoye

by BleachBum on May 5, 2011 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I think on passing downs it could look more like this

DE: Mario
DT: Watt
DT: Smith
DE: Barwin
OLB: Reed
ILB: Ryans
ILB: Cushing

Mario with his hand on the ground and Barwin standing up on the line.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on May 5, 2011 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

you know what i see

DE: Okoye
DT: Cody
DE: Mitchell
SOLB: William
ILB: Ryans
ILB: Cushing
OLB: Watt

by DaGoaT on May 5, 2011 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

you dont like?

i mean what 3-4 teams d-lineman do we really know to do anything but take up blocks. cant forget about smith i guess you put him where mitchell would be then.

by southpaw70 on May 5, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't understand why you'd have Okoye, Cody, and Mitchell

When you have Reed and Barwin on the bench. For a passing down, just doesn’t make much sense to me.

by was385 on May 5, 2011 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

yep reed and barwin on the bench

but smith would be in instead of mitchell

by southpaw70 on May 5, 2011 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

guess I just don't understand why in a passing down

You’d want to go bigger and slower up front instead of putting Mario/Watt/Smith or some combo like that up there and having barwin and reed coming off the edges.

by was385 on May 5, 2011 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I assumed that's what you meant

the OP you responded to said “I think on passing downs it could look more like this”. Yeah, that makes a little more sense if you’re talking about a starting lineup, though I just don’t see any way Watt is playing OLB and Smith isn’t starting at DE.

by was385 on May 5, 2011 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

That doesn't mean they're not needed

Yea 3-4 linemen don’t usually get a lot of sacks or tackles because they’re primarily paving the way for the LBs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an important job in the defense. Heck, in the 3-4 those 3 defensive linemen are probably THE most important players on the defense. Without 3 at least nearly dominant down linemen, the 3-4 will get gouged up the gut on runs forcing the ILBs up and consequently the defense getting burned on 10 yard passes in the middle of the field.

Just because some teams have made the 3-4 look good in recent years, it can also be an epically poor defense without the proper roster. If two of our best defensive players is on our front 3… then I say GOOD, now we’re sounding like a proper 3-4 defense.

What I really love

is that any of these or none might be what they put out there. I love what they have done with the front 7

It will be very hard to scheme for us

And we can look for mismatches against specific OL guys.

by BleachBum on May 5, 2011 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

It's pretty dynamic what Smithiakips have done through the draft and the scheme change

I’m still waiting for Rivers to address in some detail, Mario’s possible roles in the D in this scheme and with the incoming rookies.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on May 5, 2011 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

This helps make good sense of drafting JJ Watt.

We could actually have a pretty incredible front 7 with this setup.

by WhiskeyR on May 5, 2011 11:52 AM CDT reply actions

It will be this on week 1.

DE- Mario
DE- JJ
NT- Mitchell
SOLB- Barwin
WOLB- Reed
ILB- DeMeco
ILB- Cushing

This assuming we dont upgrade at NT.

by Justin Miller on May 5, 2011 1:55 PM CDT reply actions

I think we see a lot of that

But I wouldnt expect to see a rook start over Antonio on opening day

this is going to be a interesting situation, what Wade does with Mario

Okoye

Especially since, for Wade’s system, Okoye is the best NT on the roster.

But we resigned Cody! WHEEE!! It’s OK that he sucks, because we know he sucks!, so we have to re-sign him. #logicFAIL

I really don't see why people are so high on Mitchell

I really don’t remember him playing anything but average last year. I could see Watt and Smith combining for more snaps at tackle than Mitchell and Okoye.

Thanks

I think the general consensus is that most people thought we had a good draft but it’s always nice to hear it from a cowboys fan nonetheless. And to see what Mario is capable of while standing on the WOLB position really makes me excited to see how he does. I remember seeing Mario dropping back in coverage several times last season and because of his 6’7" frame, he’s able to raise his arms to deflect passes. Of course, most of he time, we’ll see him rush the QB from the LB position.

by Tony Ung on May 5, 2011 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

im dead serious

the Texans had one of the best drafts in the NFL
I am a huuuuuuuuuge Brandon Harris JJ Watt Roc Carmichael fan
you got a disruptive five tech DE, which the Cowboys havent had since Canty, you got a first round talent in Harris and a great cornerback in Roc, trust me you just upgraded your defense big time

Bruce Carter+Sean Lee=BRUCE LEE!!!!

by Archie Barberio on May 5, 2011 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

oh man

just a quick clarification, does this mean Mario won’t ever get back on the line and rush from the hand-down position off the edge?? IF that’s true, i HATE moving him off the line permanently. If this is a ’let’s move him around and mask our blitz packages’ and let’s be ‘creative and versatile’ on defense…then Wade might be onto something…but at the moment, I’m VERY skeptical about the transition.

by wiseonekms on May 5, 2011 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

No, doesn't mean that

In the pure 3-4? I can see some rotation/match-up plays by moving Mario around. Mario will be a DE in passing situations, though, when we go to a true four man front.

by bigfatdrunk on May 5, 2011 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

you watched the cowboys recently?

The WOLB role Ware is in is just another DE who generally (but not always) lines up standing at the line. Phillips moved Ware all over though, put his hand on the ground sometimes, and created a lot of confusion.

by was385 on May 5, 2011 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

oh ok

I never saw Ware w/ his hand on the ground that’s why I got a lil concerned w/ Wade’s philosophy w/ Mario. hmmm, ok, I guess if it worked for Wade w/ Ware, maybe it works w/ Mario??

by wiseonekms on May 5, 2011 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Ware

sometimes he will drop and put his hand in the ground, but almost 85 percent of the time he is standing up
Mario is a great athlete like Ware, I am sure Mario will find a way to wreak havoc in a 3-4

Bruce Carter+Sean Lee=BRUCE LEE!!!!

by Archie Barberio on May 5, 2011 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

One thing I'm concerned about with the Ware comparisions

Is that Ware is 6’4" and 262 pounds. Mario is nearly 6’7" and 290+ pounds. I just don’t know if Mario has the lateral quickness beyond 10 yards. I’m wondering if this is all a smokescreen. We gotta keep Peiton guessing for week 1 afterall.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on May 6, 2011 6:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I remain skeptical as well.

Mario can’t hold a candle to Ware when it comes to agility; Ware’s 4.07 was incredible to the extent that no linebacker topped it until Von Miller showed up. Mario’s is in-line with other successful pass rushers, but the idea that “Mario can do anything Ware can do” is probably a stretch… Ware might be the best 3-4 player of this decade, though. I’d be content with a fraction of that sort of production.

by Nashmeister on May 6, 2011 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually

Mario is quite Agile for his size…posting I think a 4.37 SS time, which is pretty good for a 290+ lbs man…..
