I wish Amobi was trade fodder

Based on what Wade said, he’s not sure what to expect out of this guy. Going on that, I would rather trade him.

by Tony Ung on May 9, 2011 9:31 AM CDT reply actions

he has no trade value

We’d be doing well to get a 5th for him and we need bodies to fill in as rotational DE’s behind Watt and Smith.

This year a 5th got us a ST player and a developmental QB. He has more value if he can fit as a rotational guy this year.

Meh

We’ll see I guess. Maybe he succeeds but I’m not going to put my hopes up on him.

by Tony Ung on May 9, 2011 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Smokescreen?

Anyone think Wade’s just trying to show that we have SOME use for Okoye so teams don’t automatically assume he’ll be cut because he doesn’t fit our scheme? Maybe Wade is looking to trade him, and doesn’t want people thinking he’ll be available as a free agent…

by swiftwords on May 9, 2011 10:03 AM CDT reply actions

Doubt it.

We could use the depth at DE and with Mario at OLB he will probably get a lot of snaps. He’s getting one more chance to prove that’s he’s not a bust.

Also I doubt there is any trade value for him even with a smokescreen. He’s basically a bust now.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

by Ethan Matz on May 9, 2011 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

At end, in a 1 gap penetrating scheme, orchestrated by someone not retarded,

he may have some success. I don’t think WPh is gonna cut him just yet. Great defensive coaches see untapped talent and want to coach it, not cut it. I think if Amobi doesn’t turn into at least a decent rotational player at end, then he will be cut.

It is hard not to be bitter about that

But as I recall, in addition to being young, Okoye didnt play football in HS. So if the coaching was bad for him here, he would indeed have suffered more than most from that since he did not have a lot of prior (good) experience to fall back on. Wade does give me hope, but we arent going to know for sure until they get out on the playing field.

I do think we are much better off playing him rather than trading him. If he improves, even if he doesnt fit our scheme and future plans, at least he might become more marketable than a fifth rounder. In other words, there isnt a lot of downside to playing him (as long as it isnt my money paying him).

Cody didn't play on passing downs...

On the other hand, Okoye was an 800+ snap guy each year who got to play on third-and-long situations. The only use for him is inside in our 4-man fronts, which is now likely to be occupied by Watt and Antonio Smith.

by Nashmeister on May 9, 2011 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Okoye had 1.83x more snaps than did Cody

So, even if we extrapolate, that’s only 33 hits and pressures, or 22 less than Cody.

One can get to the QB. One cannot.

I see the problem now

Someone needs to explain to Amobi that the opposing quarterbacks are going hut hut huuut, and not buck buck buuuck

by BleachBum on May 11, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Quite a bit, I would imagine.

I’m guessing somebody out there has done some math to figure out the ratio of hurries/hits/sacks on obvious passing situations as opposed to normal downs. I’d be interested to see it, actually.

But back to the original point, you’re only looking at one side of the coin. I submit: one can hold his own against the run, one cannot. As it much as it hurts to know, there’s nobody else on the roster capable of playing the run as well as Cody does at DT (no, he’s not below replacement level; call 2009 and aberration if you want, but he graded just fine in 2010). Whereas when it comes to pass-rushing, if you’re building a four-man front, would you really proclaim Okoye a starter? I’d prefer Mario-Watt-Smith-Barwin/Reed, personally.

That's just not true...

Just because he doesn’t require a monster nose tackle doesn’t mean run defense is irrelevant. If you throw Okoye in there as a three-down player, you wind up with a liability on the field 40% of the time. And from the looks of the Pancakes article above, Okoye doesn’t even fit the profile for a Phillips NT. Quoth the Wade:

He hustles like crazy, but he doesn’t penetrate the way you’d like him to

Yes, I've read it.

“One-gap” is not the same as “one-dimensional”. Just because Ratliff is undersized doesn’t mean he can’t play the run. If you’re going to run that kind of defense, you’d better make sure that your nose tackle consistently hits his gap and makes the stop when the ball-carrier is coming his way.

But hell, I don’t know why I’m arguing about this. Wade has pretty much said it for me. The guy is gushing over Earl Mitchell despite seeing limited snaps, whereas he had ample evidence on tape to relegate Okoye to back-up DE.

Agreed with Nash above on Shaun Cody

but your point still stands that he could be effective, especially since all Ive heard since the hiring is that WP3-4 is different from all others, NOTABLY at the NT position. I just think that Earl Mitchel might prove to be just as good a player as Amobi, only with a better motor (somethting he’ll need as an undersized NT). Fact is, Okoye could prove as solid depth, and/or a change of pace on the DL, both great things to have.

you know..

in this scheme where its allegedly all about getting up the field to cause disruption, i think Amobi might actually find his stride. He’s got the quickness but lets face it, he’s never had the coaching and likely never been in a scheme thats played to that quickness. If his job is “Shoot the Gap” the second the ball is snapped, i think we may have a more productive season from him. especially if he responds like a man to being told he’s a backup until he proves it.

Worst case scenario: He remains below average and becomes depth
Best case scenario: He becomes good and makes an impact OR becomes trade value

Good God, what’s wrong with me? All this confidence and hope… Damn you Wade!!!

I'm looking forward to bigger and better things from the Texans this year... I've decided to start fresh and refocus on the things that matter... thats right... Jesus, how does McClain still have a job?

When he writes factually incorrect drivel like this:

Okoye, the 10th overall pick in 2007, has been a four-year starter who has played the run well but hasn’t provided the pass rush the Texans thought he would.

Hasn’t it been pointed out to him a hundred times that Okoye is not good against the run? Also frightening: that Phillips is concerned about Kareem’s deep speed. We spent a first-round pick on a guy who can’t cover deep? Headasplode.

by Nashmeister on May 9, 2011 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

True that.

While I admired Frank Bush’s insistence that the players were in place, perhaps he should have fought more with Rick Smith for some serious personnel changes. That’s the beauty of having an established DC, I suppose. Wade isn’t afraid to admit that he can’t get the job done with the garbage from last year. Maybe some honesty will actually get him a legit CB in free agency.

Who says we will be weak on th e run if we run it. 4 down lineman 2 linebackers 3 safteies and 2 corners. I know this will take away of our pass rush somewhat but 4-2-5 is getting very popular now.

We don't even have one competent safety on our roster...

Running a scheme that employs three of ’em would be sheer madness.

+1

it puts more of our weakest unit (secondary) on the field and limits our best unit (LB). Bad, bad idea.

Not to mention watching 3 rookie DB’s and Kareem trying to get around pulling OG and then watching them try and tackle.

I rather have the flexibility of Wade's 3-4

With what you show, I like Barwin better because there is some disguise…he can move up to the line for 4-3-4 if it looks like a run, or stay back in coverage for pass. The nickel is where you really think they are going to pass 90% of the time (might be a safe bet with last years pass defense….but I think we improve this year).

With Wade’s 3-4 there is even more disguise because both OLB’s are flexible.

by BleachBum on May 9, 2011 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

but in retrospect

something you consider if you are short on linebackers (problems with Meco and Barwin coming back from injury), but I rather not think about that at this point

by BleachBum on May 9, 2011 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

or I guess if we resign Pollard you could

try to use him here in a swing safety/lb role

by BleachBum on May 9, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt Carmichael would be a starter. Replace him with the Vet CB we are hopefully getting.

BTW I think the Colts run something like this a lot.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

by Ethan Matz on May 9, 2011 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what I was talking about
We’re not going to drop him," Phillips said. "We’re going to rush him. That’s why I say we’re more of a 5-2, in that those five guys are coming a lot of the time, especially the position Mario plays. DeMarcus Ware played that position, Bryce Paup – on and on, guys that have led the league. They didn’t lead the league in sacks by dropping a whole lot."

and the clouds opened up and God said "I Hate you Texans Fans."

by Joe25 on May 9, 2011 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow 5-2 huh.

That will be kinda cool. So it will be Mario, Smith, Watt, Cody or mitchell, reed or okoye. all down

Funny look above

I said the 3-4 was basically a 5-2 Who woulda known I was so clever.

My name is Barry - I am from Texas

by Barryfromtexas on May 9, 2011 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I might be misunderstanding you but not all down

Lineup would be Mario (Standing up or hand on the ground), Smith/Okoye (Hand down), Cody/Mitchell (Hand down), Watt/Okoye (Hand down), Reed/Barwin (Standing up) with Meco and Cushing playing behind them. Argh, even as I’m typing this, Phillips mentioned that he’ll move Mario at DE on some plays so I’m guessing before the ball is snapped, Mario will swap positions from the WILL with someone at the DE and rush when there is an obvious mismatch. I don’t even want to think about Cushing rushing from the OLB which WPh has stated. Argh seriously, the possibilities are endless.

And from Phillips for those who says Mario will drop into coverage from time to time:
bq. Asked how much concern he has about Williams dropping into coverage, Phillips replied, "None."

Finally insight into the defensive plan.I'm shocked though.

By the fact that Kareem only gave up 4 TD’s. It seems like more than that. And yes his deep speed is bad and his technique was off.If those are his biggest problems though I have hope he will actually rebound. But he’ll always be a reliability when covering fast WR’s.

No surprise on what he said about Earl he did look solid when he was on the field last season.

Okoye seems like he’s getting his last chance at being a Texan as a rotational player at DE. Seems like a decent spot for him to with him going inside on 3rd down.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

by Ethan Matz on May 9, 2011 4:50 PM CDT reply actions

Exactly

That has been a theme with the defense from Year 1. The only, and I mean literally the only player who progressed AFTER their rookie year was Mario. No exceptions.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

by AllenOU on May 9, 2011 7:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Then again, Mario's hardly an exception either

He progressed from Year 1 to Year 2, but ever since Year 2 his stats have declined.

Mario Williams
Season TCKL FF Sacks
2006 35 1 4.5
2007 43 2 14
2008 44 4 12
2009 38 2 9
2010 22 1 9 (missed 3 games at the end of the year)

Mario probably would have collected another sack or two, maybe forced a fumble, but he was well off his tackle numbers. It hardly as clear a regression as others, but it’s not a great omen either.

Other players whose stats I looked at included Glover Quin, Travis Johnson, and Zac Diles. Glover was an odd case because he was CB2 only towards the end of his rookie season and was CB1 all of last year. Travis Johnson just sorta sucked all years except one of ’em (2007 I think, decent stats actually), and Zac Diles was hard to evaluate because he was looking great a couple of years ago until he got injured midway through the season.

You could even count Pollard and Eugene Wilson in the regression trend I think. Pollard has always been knocked for his coverage, but somehow it was masked well or he was just better about it in year 1 with us. Eugene Wilson too looked decent once upon a time, though his decline could be age related more than the poison that is playing defense for the Texans.

by La Voz on May 9, 2011 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Generally, I think you're right.

But part of the reason that Mario’s tackle numbers went down is that teams ran away from him more.

Not to mention he has been injured the last 2 years

by nolander on May 10, 2011 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Mario has actually improved dramatically against the run in the past two years.

And up until last year, while his sack numbers dropped, his hit/hurry numbers spiked. He’s tough to evaluate because of the nagging injuries that have clearly effected his performance, but he’s definitely a much better player now than he was his rookie year. I’d throw Quin in the “improved” category as well. And if we’re counting free agents, I’d consider Antonio Smith as well; perhaps it’s the scheme change, but the best two years of his career have come in Houston.

by Nashmeister on May 10, 2011 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok ok ok, there are indeed exceptions...

That’s why I cherry-picked the ones I did in the original post. ;)

Still, despite the exceptions, it’s hard to ignore how (in the past) we’ve managed to take talent and mess it all up.

by La Voz on May 10, 2011 2:04 AM CDT up reply actions

To be fair

Dunta was an exception as well. He regressed because of his injury in my opinion.

But I agree with your premise overall. Only because it is so completely obvious that you’d have to have an IQ of -3 to not see it.

I have to disagree

The injury furthered his regression, but his best year was his rookie season. He regressed in subsequent years before the injury. People were just so hyped up about his rookie year and excited to have a talented young player on defense that they refused to see it.

While I don't disagree....

I think it’s worth considering that some defensive statistics may be skewed due to the fact that our offense got progressively better over the years? Theoretically meaning our defense wasn’t required to defend as much.

I have no proof of course, but it sounds reasonable enough.
