Texans ILB DeMeco Ryans Says Rehab Ahead Of Schedule
Per the Twitter account of Houston Chronicle writer John McClain, The Captain's rehab of his season-ending Achilles injury is going better than expected. Ryans even says that he should be good for training camp, should the lockout end of course.
Does this ease some of the gloom and doom that some have had when thinking about DeMeco in 2011?

Honestly
With all of our injury history the last few years, “Ahead of schedule” is the last thing I want to hear about anyone’s rehab. Don’t rush back, heal it up completely and come back as close to full strength as possible whenever that may be. We need him to be the DeMeco we know and love, not someone who re-aggravates an injury just to play all 16(+) games..
Just because someone says they're ahead of schedule doesn't necessarily mean they're rushing it
It could just mean he’s healing really fast. It’s possible, of course we won’t know until we see the product on the field.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Yup. I think everyone from the players to the FO exaggerate injury progress.
I forget exactly where I read it, but OD was saying that he exaggerated his health some to get on the field this past year.
Ya I have had multiple surgeries due to sports injuries
and the real problem is the doctors. Most surgeons will tell you “its one of the best (enter your kind of surgery here) he has ever done or even seen!” When in all reality its most likely just like every other procedure. Then when you start to rehab and it gets hard, he/she tells you that you are ahead of schedule and that he cant believe you are already where you are in the process! Just to give you that mindset so you push through the rehab thinking youre special and the surgeon gets another satisfied customer, whether they should be or not.

Most doctors want to to rehab at a certain speed
Because that is what insurance covers – after that you are healed!

Very true
It’s kinda like a placebo effect I guess. They put it in your mind that you’re an amazing healer, everything is better than expected, etc.

No
Because this line
Per the Twitter account of Houston Chronicle writer John McClain

I know its fashionable to take these shots at McClain
but if he tweets that DeMeco told him something, do you honestly think DeMeco did not tell him that?
by WhiskeyR on Jun 14, 2011 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Does it matter if he did?
If he’s actually a journalist, copy pasting a quote doesn’t count as reporting. I know the bar is low nowadays but McClain never checks anything, and takes everyone at face value. That’s why he’s always wrong and no longer a very good reporter. Rick Smith could’ve told him we were trading up for Cam Newton in the draft and he would’ve reported with absolutely no critical review. McClain’s reporting isn’t reporting, it’s regurgitation. That’s why it can’t be trusted.
Needs more nose tackle.
Seriously?
He specifically states that he spoke to him. Then he reported what he was told. Does that mean we should think DeMeco is fine? No. Athletes always say that. OD recently admitted that he was exaggerating his health this past season. That’s to be expected. But it seems perfectly fine to me for someone to ask someone how they are and then report their answer and I find it highly unlikely he’s lying about it. If there’s someone to not believe, its DeMeco.
The McClain and Chronicle hate on here seems over the top at times.
I cant help but notice that my dad gets all of his sports info from the newspaper and when we discuss the team he seems just as informed as I am as a blogger. The fact is that A LOT of bullshit flows in this business. Ok so McClain has shot and missed on draft pick predictions but arent we all just guessing? I know he has the most access but do you really think they would ever ever ever hint or tell him who that was so it could be all over twitter? For all we know the Texans ask him to put stuff out to smokescreen during draft time, who really knows? The guy has been in the biz long enough to get a little more respect than he does around here considering the guy has managed to become one of the most read sports writers in the 4th largest city in the USA and we….. dont.

I totally agree with this.
Also personally I do think they ask him to act as a smokescreen of sorts. Someone brought up that possibility a couple of years ago and it seems to continue to make sense.
I just rarely read anything by the chronicle anymore
and when I do I quit getting worked up abut it….mostly. Mclain regurgitates what he’s told and that’s fine. I would prefer that he and the other Chronicle writers take things a step further and dig a little deeper. Instead it’s often inflammatory pieces written for the sole purpose of stirring people up for page views. I understand the reason for that, but I just don’t see a point in reading it.
I lost faith in McClain years ago when I asked him a salary cap question and he told me something along the lines of he had no idea because it’s impossible to understand the salary cap because we don’t know what it says.
I lost faith in Justice when he was on the radio and got asked about Ramon Walker. He said he would probably make the team, but didn’t think he would get many carries. Ramon Walker was a safety.

Exactly
I think anyone that tries to justify their writings as real journalism has been seriously deprived of real journalism. I don’t read anything from the Chron any more.

I am sort of with you Whiskey
Except I believe they feed him stuff. If he was misleading on purpose he pretty much fails as a journalist/reporter – so maybe they feed him stuff, they may even give a wink when they do.
McClain does need to dig more – but we sometimes forget that as bloggers “we” concentrate on football and McClain pretty much covers all sorts of sports.

I think that's key
The Chronicle doesn’t cater to fans like us. They are writing for a very general audience who often get exactly what they are looking for.
"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds
I still want to see how DeMeco performs IN a training camp situation,
But it does make me feel a bit better. I mean the rehab may be going better than expected, but it’s his Achilles tendon. Players don’t come back the same after injuries to it, so that’s what concerns me about him.

I would like to report...
I recently told myself that the progress of my stumped big toe is 2 1/3 day behind schedule because a 9 year old with poor genes stepped on it before it was done healing… Before then I was about 1/2 a day ahead of schedule, or so I told myself after reading a previous progress report from myself….

No, and thanks for playing today’s episode of “Easy Answers to Easy Questions.”
Point #1: Remember how many times Bennie Joppru was on the verge of returning?
Point #2: Players always, ALWAYS, over-hype their return from injury.
Until he’s on the field and we’re able to see what he’s doing, I have absolutely no warm fuzzies for his return.

The groundhog makes an appearance.....
When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

Someone needs to follow up with Matt Schaub on this
I listened to a podcast interview the other day about his offseason work out attendance. He made reference to the fact that several defensive players were starting to attend, and that Meco was helping line out coverages, etc.
He didn’t say anything about his injury status or how he looked, and I was actually surprised that the interviewer didn’t ask. I’d like to assume that he’s on the field moving around well but I have no idea. Maybe one of you local guys can take a trip over to Rice and see for yourselves?

what kind of achilles injury?
i think achilles and Acl injuries take an extended period to heal.
So he should heal then do extra physical therapy

Acl takes at least 12 months.
Achilles, in 60% of cases, never heal the same. Ever.

It took me five months to heal my ACL after I got it replaced, and I’m about as far from a pro athlete as you can get.

I was under the impression that ACLs were a 4-5 month FULL recovery
and that a torn achilles was a 12 month full recovery time

Torn Achilles is 12 months recovery if you don't have surgery on it
With a flawless surgery and aggressive rehab, you could be back in 4 months…..otherwise it’s normally a 6-9 month ordeal.
At least by what I’ve read.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Ah i see, that makes sense
A friend of mine jumped a fourwheeler and when he landed his foot slipped off the footpeg and was run over by the back wheel, tearing his achilles. He was in a boot for A LONG TIME. I was trying to remember the whole ordeal lasted but now that you mention it im not sure if he got surgery or not.

ATVs are very dangerous
I have been reckless (not wreckless) on them and lived to tell about it. Many of us know of someone who has died on them. I don’t horse around on them anymore. I have lived and learned. They are fun, but you can have fun without getting crazy on them.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
I had my share of close calls
Luckily the worst I ever ended up with was having to digg rocks out of my ass and lots of bruises.

my 2 cents...
as a physical therapist, just wanted to chime in…torn tendons and ligaments don’t ever actually heal to 100% of the previous strength prior to injury. most ACL surgeries for pro-level athletes involve replacing the ACL with one from a cadaver. using the hamstring tendon as a graft site would only lengthen and increase the difficulty of rehab. most players that rush back from an ACL surgery too quickly end up injuring their hamstrings b/c the hamstrings help perform some of the same functions as the ACL, case in point: owen daniels.
in demeco’s case, the Achille’s tendon snapped, so chances are the surgeon went in and stitched it back together. i have a feeling that when these reports come out about the player “being ahead of schedule” it’s in reference to the imaging showing the tissue healing. to my knowledge, Achille’s injuries take most of a year to heal and rehab, and then another year for the athlete to recover most of their explosiveness and agility. it’ll also take time for demeco to trust his injured leg as well. i expect to see demeco on the field early next year and perform as a solid player, simply b/c of the type of guy he is. but i wouldnt count on him being DEMECO until the next season after that, but if anyone could blow this theory up, it’d be him.

Rec'd fo da truf
The confidence factor is HUGE bc the pain of the injury was the last feeling you remember from live play. Its human nature to subconsciously monitor and protect the injured location which can be a problem for defensive players as contact is inevitable.

610 has a doctor who calls in to discuss sports injuries from time to time
And several months ago he seemed to think DeMeco’s injury was no big deal going forward (ie. once he’s rehabbed fully) and it should be stronger than before. Now, I don’t know this doctors credentials or what other doctors think about these things. But I’ve seen/heard speculation in both directions. Hopefully he will be fine and I’m trying to take the general feel around here (that he’s doomed) as being more of a product of our terrible Texans luck than being firmly rooted in medical science.
I guess we have to just wait and see. But here’s to hoping for the best!
There's plenty of studies out there
http://www.emaxhealth.com/1275/2/35136/achilles-tendon-rupture-ends-many-nfl-careers.html
http://www.upoj.org/site/files/v19/v19_07.pdf
The second link talks about a %50 reduction in power….which sounds much worse than it is IMO. Basically their “power rating” is determined by very simple stats. On defense they use tackles and interceptions for DB’s and LB’s. Besides being terribly simplistic and narrowly focused the players in the study were an average of 29 (with the oldest being 36). That means many of the players in the study would have seen a decline in production even with out the injury. Still there’s plenty of reason to be concerned (although I’ not sure of exactly how severe Ryan’s injury was on the scale of Achilles injuries).
