Just In Case You Missed It - The Rookie Symposium is Back On
When "The Lockout" became official, one of the first orders of business was that the 2011 NFL Rookie Symposium, which was going to be held at the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, was canceled. Coming to the rescue is the Players Association which promptly scheduled a replacement symposium for Washington, DC, which has since been changed to Bradenton, FL at IMG Academies. All 254 incoming rookies are invited. It remains to be seen how many will attend. At the Rookie Symposium, the rookies are expected to get tutored on financial education and planning; proper behavior on and off the field; and dealing with the media. I wonder if they will also be informed on how the Players Association is negotiating with the NFL on lowering the amounts of guaranteed money to be offered to rookies so that more money can be given to veterans. When it comes to the "other issues," I wonder if guys like the Ravens' Jimmy Smith will be there to go through indoctrination. Yes, the Jimmy Smith with codeine issues (ala JaMarcus Russell), alcohol, getting women pregnant, and arrests for assault amongst his personal concerns. Not exactly a straight-walker, it seems like the rookie symposium was made for a guy like him. Jimmy Smith, meet J.J. Watt. J.J. Watt, run!
