Arian Foster
I've been studying up a little on salary cap recently because of all this Nnamdi Asomugha to Houston and the " we aren't going to re-sign the best FB in the league" talk. The whole point of the Nnamdi comment was that we can't sign other decent free agents if we were to take on a contract like the one Nnamdi's is going to be. The point of the Vonta Leach comment is that we can't re-sign a beast to a decent contract. What I'm trying to get at is that what happens when we have to re-sign Arian. He is worth much more than the 310K a year he is payed now. Adrian Peterson is payed about 7M a year and Jamaal Charles earns about 6.5M a year. Arian Foster is probably going to get 5 years ( J.C had a 5 year contract and A.P had a 6 year contract) worth at least 25M. If paying Leach would supposedly break the bank, what happens when Arian Foster hits payday?

Just too hard to answer until the new CBA is worked out
I would guess the salary cap goes down, so there will need to be a sorting out period for new contracts. Contracts signed on the old CBA may not directly apply under the new CBA.

I agree,
Under the old cba, i think players were limited by how much of a pay raise they could get. It’s one of the reasons that the Titans were able to get Chris Johnson without breaking the bank. Until the cba is resolved no one will know who can be signed, cut, or anything else.
Feeling the five stages of grief since 2002.

Damn my browser failed on me as I clicked!
iPads and blogs just don’t do well together I guess.
Move my “Free Agent” vote to “Signs high value deal”
It won't be an issue with Foster until next year
They are going to make him perform at a high level for another season before paying him. They don’t want see what happened with Slaton happen after forking over the money. Resigning Leach doesn’t so much break the bank, its more that a value level is assigned to positions and fullback just doesn’t carry a high number.
I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.
They never forked over any money to Slaton

I know
I am saying they dont want to fork over money to Foster and then have him decline like Slaton after one good year.

Actually
I think the issue regarding forking over money or not forking over money was more of a principle issue, as in, he’s already under contract. Let’s examine some recent “forking over” incidents. Prominent ones that I can think of are Chris Johnson and Darelle Revis.
In Cris Johnson’s instance, one season ago, he used the threat of a holdout to get an upgrade in pay. The Titans buckled and Johnson got a raise. He was happy for one season and now discussions are out there that he may holdout again.
Darelle Revis also threatened to holdout and actually did. He missed games, but the team came around to his thinking and gave him a raise.
In both cases, the quality of the backups to each player was questionable, thus strengthening their respective positions in the negotiations/holdouts.
So, here we are and based on most recent performance, Arian Foster is underpaid. Was his season a fluke? Will he decline based on his own self-performance? Or, is there an issue that he will be injured and therefore his performance will decline? Well, both possibilities may have merit. I think most educated observers will agree that the Arian Foster we saw in 2010 is the real Arian Foster. Opposition defenses had plenty of opportunity to shut him down. He had a great season. If injury is the worry, well, that should be Foster’s worry, also, and not just the worry of the team. He’s healthy now and there’s no promise that he will get through 2011 with perfect health. So, you know what? If I was Arian Foster’s adviser, I would be recommending that he go the route of Chris Johnson or Darrelle Revis. That is my honest advice to him. Otherwise, he just might become the next Steve Slaton.

I'm imagining what I think is the natural chain of events
We have an All-Pro RB getting paid the league minimum. I think the next occurrence in the sequence of events is that the team makes a better offer. If the player likes it, he signs it and we see how the season goes. Next year at this time, if the player performed at an All-Pro level again, then I see another contract. At any point in that chain of events, the team doesn’t make a better offer? Then, I recommend the player holds out. I suspect that Arian Foster has not received a better offer. What benefit is it to him to play another season at the league minimum? None. That is peanuts compared to what he should be paid. If he gets hurt, the team loses an All-Pro player and at what cost? The league minimum? They have nothing invested in Arian Foster. It is worth more to Arian Foster to sit out and stay healthy for a whole season and then negotiate with the team of his choice after a year.
