Nobody likes a Leach, right?

I mean, what does a guy have to do for a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T around here.  Last offseason, despite widely being considered at the very least in the top 50% of FBs in this league, many Texans fans were clamoring for him being replaced by an undrafted rookie free agent.  Then after a season in which he was voted into the pro bowl by players, coaches, and fans and making the cut for the NFL Network's top 100 players at any position for last season, the team decided against resigning him before the deadline and subsequent lockout... which has been deemed a death sentence for other players on the team as it relates to their chances of being resigned.

So why would the Texans not want one of the 75 best players in the NFL and a pro bowler at the FB position?  Is he too expensive, or are they simply opting to go in a different direction with the position by playing more of a old school H-Back who is more of a threat out of the backfield?

Firstly, I doubt seriously if the Texans choose not to resign Leach that it'll have much at all to do with finances.  Full Back is not a highly paid position in the NFL, and there's usually not bidding wars over even very good free agent FBs.  He wouldn't be the first FB to go from pro bowl one season to very much under the radar free agent the next either.  Lorenzo Neal was named to the Pro Bowl with the Bengals in 2002 then was quietly allowed to leave town and join the Chargers who after 3 straight Pro Bowl seasons also let him walk...

No, i'd imagine if Leach doesn't come back it'll be because of a philosophical change at the FB position.  Maybe the Texans are just so excited by what Casey can bring to the table at the position, that they feel the need to clear room for him.  My two cents though...

Why not have our cake and eat it too?  It's not that unheard of to carry two "FBs" at the same time, look at the Washington Redskins for example.  They have Chris Cooley, a TE/H-Back hybrid who lines up in the backfield frequently and is a serious receiving threat out of the backfield.  They also have a gigantic blocking full back in Mike Sellars who plays primarily in running situations and is a serious threat to knock the **** out of someone.  Casey is very affordable to us at the moment, and I doubt it'd cost too much to resign Leach.., why not carry both and use them as the situation warrants?  Surely we can find 1 player somewhere else on our roster that could be cut to free up the space?  Heck, go back to 2 QBs again for all I care.

What say you, is Casey's potential as a receiving threat great enough to sacrifice one of the better blocking FBs in the NFL, should Casey stick to TE and depth at FB, or should we do the smart thing and use them both to their strengths?
