Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

As we get closer to (presumably) a period of free agency, everyone should expect to see more of these kind of stories and interviews from agents and players.

Per an interview with ESPN 103.3 in Dallas, Gerald Sensabaugh states his interest in Houston. While everyone's already made the Wade Phillips connection, I believe (but stand to be corrected) this is the first we've heard him say it.

Last year, Sensabaugh had 71 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 10 passes defensed. Yes, a real safety is allowed to do those kinds of things.

I fully expect us to sign him.

Not because of his connection to Wade, but because Smith likes to sign these average type of players.

And sadly...

Average would be a marked improvement for our safety position.

But average is an upgrade

Which would you rather have

Jackson, sensabaugh, quin, Jon joseph, with crazy depth at

Or

Jackson, nolan/barber, quin, Nnamdi, also with great depth.

I’ll take the first one

We aren't getting Scrabble or Joseph.

You have to remember that Rick Smith is our GM.

Sensabaugh & Cromartie is the likely combo of signees

I'll take it.

We desperately need two above-average starters in our secondary.

by Nashmeister on Jul 19, 2011 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Sensabaugh or Cromartie qualify as 'above average.'

Cromartie also violates every single character qualification the team uses to evaluate potential players.

The guy’s a moron who has more kids with more women than he received points on the Wonderlic.

That said, I anticipate a Sensabaugh signing (along with a Marcus Spears signing). As for the corner, I think it will be Ike Taylor, Carlos Rogers, or Josh Wilson.

Welcome to Houston, J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed, Brandon Harris, Rashad Carmichael, Shiloh Keo, T.J. Yates, Derek Newton, and Cheta Ozougwu!

by krkenney on Jul 19, 2011 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

So you're holding the fact that Cromartie will never be sponsored by Trojan condoms against him?

At least he’s avoiding the criminal courts. Civil courts on the other hand……..

by The Night Owl on Jul 19, 2011 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Above-average doesn't generally refer to character.

Cromartie is a better player than Ike Taylor and Carlos Rogers. Probably a wash with Wilson (/fully expects a BFD rebuttal). As for Sensabaugh… It’s an awfully shallow safety pool, and PFF has at least thought pretty highly of him the past two years. He’d be a massive upgrade.

by Nashmeister on Jul 20, 2011 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions

We never sign, or even go after aggressively, a top tier FA.

Maybe he doesn’t like average players, but he signs nothing bu average players.

I for one

have been happy with our Ninja defensive end.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

Okay, nothing but is a bit of hyperbole.

But in general he has not pursued many free agents that would actually cost money at all.

by riversmccown on Jul 20, 2011 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I dunno according

to the article he wants a whole lot more money, not sure we are the ones to give it to him.

by Bobbythegreat on Jul 19, 2011 4:27 PM CDT reply actions

More money than the under $2mil he was making

He’s not getting Weddle money or anything close….but $3-5 is probably what I’d peg him at….a decent mid-range salary. Probably similar to that Wade Smith deal.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 19, 2011 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Well if by

“not in the same zip code” he means only about 3-5 then fine, but he isn’t someone that I would want to break the bank for.

by Bobbythegreat on Jul 19, 2011 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

If he made 3.6 next year

That’d be double his current salary. Double. That’s not in the same zip code. Don’t think of it as ‘only 2’ above his current pay. Think of it as what it is, his paychecks all of a sudden doubling, to the tune of an extra $2,000,000 per year.

by Calvinball on Jul 19, 2011 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd sign up for that

It’s not like he’s going to get a Dunta or Scrabble package

28 year old about to sign a deal that'll take him through his prime...and coming off a good season...

Has made fewer than $2M a season in his 5-year career….it’s just the nature of the situation. He’s not going to break anyone’s bank (or shouldn’t), but he knows he’s gotta get every penny.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 19, 2011 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Says here he made $1.82M last year with the Cowfarts.

And he’s definitely gonna want more than that. How much more though? If the price is right, I would not object to signing him. I think he’d be a good addition here with Quin at FS and a veteran CB locking down one half of the field (coughNnamdicough).

ok, but anything over 6 is unreasonable.

exactly

With such a short FA period, everyone FA is going to make bank, and not have to wait but a couple days to get it.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on Jul 20, 2011 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

This is my biggest fear

Rick will dump $20M a year from the cap into:

- resigning Leach, Butler, and Jacoby
- and grab three mediocre upgrade FA’s that don’t really make an lasting and measurable impact in our secondary.

I’d rather see us use $14M – $16M of that in getting a couple of studs for the secondary that bring immediate impact and long term benefits (mentoring, depth, etc).

by MeMongo on Jul 20, 2011 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Seriously? $4.4MM is overpaying for Sensabaugh?

I don't think he's much different than Pollard overall

Trade off a bit of a pass coverage for a bit of run defense.

So, yeah, I think that’s an overpayment.

by riversmccown on Jul 20, 2011 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I really had no idea what the going rates were...

… after I posted I saw some discussion below that indicated that the safety pay scale was somewhat more modest that some of the others.

I see your point.

This should help give everyone an idea about safety salaries...

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/football/nfl/salaries/position/S/2009-10

Granted, this data is from 2 years ago, but safeties don’t typically make a large salary. Anything above $4 likely puts him in the top 10….and he’s no top 10 safety. So really….He’s probably looking at $2.5-$3.8 million a year. 5 years, $19 million with about $7-9 guaranteed is the upper limits of what he’s looking at. 5 years, $16.5 million with $7M guaranteed sounds more reasonable….especially with safeties few and far between.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 19, 2011 7:44 PM CDT reply actions

More salary cap stuff

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora tweeting about the Dallas situation. They’re way over the proposed cap, but La Canfora tweeting about moves they can make (like converting base salary to bonuses). He’s quoting one anonymous exec saying they could potentially finagle their cap to have about $20M to play with. If Dallas can do that….a lot of teams can really free up space.

Hard to say....real hard. Trying to find info is pretty scarce.

Good numbers have us at ~$85M.

I wouldn't mind signing Sensabaugh.

He would be a fairly significant upgrade over the traffic cones we had back there last season. However, I am concerned a bit by something I read over at BTB when his name first came up a few weeks ago, something about how he doesn’t want to be a leader or a teacher.

That’s fine and all, not everyone is cut out for leading, but it would concern me that he would be the most experienced player in this scheme on the defense. I just wonder how willing he’d be to help even just his fellow DBs pick up the system.
