CBSSports' Pete Prisco's rankings: If Houston signed Nnamdi Asomugha it "would move them to second place in the rankings"

For those of you who have ever ventured to Chris' Houston Diehards website, I am the "kyle" who is notorious for saying ridiculous things (like Tampa Bay would be markedly improved in 2010 because that's what NFC South last-place teams do).

Anyway, the story itself: After following a PFT link, I was led to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports' article:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/15334021/fourway-formula-champion-packers-stacked-at-premium-positions/rss

In this article, he takes teams before free agency (with minor alterations i.e. Oakland without Nnamdi Asomugha) and ranks them in four categories, then gives a final ranking based on composite scores. Those four categories?

"

• Rate the quarterback.
• Rate the guys who knock the quarterback down.
• Rate the players who knock down the quarterback's passes.
• Rate the men who keep the quarterback upright. "

You can read the rankings for yourself, but one thing to consider is this: He directly states that the Texans (who currently rank 12th, earning a #6 seed in the playoffs) would move to #2 on the list if they signed Nnamdi Asomugha, which would improve our "players who knock down the quarterback's passes" rank from 30th to 1st.

Also worth noting: It is argued that Philadelphia is our strongest competition for Nnamdi. However, as I argued with a Philly fan in a mock draft lounge, Philly doesn't make sense because you don't sign a player for that much money to be your #2 cornerback; Asante Samuel is already making elite corner money, so Philly would be wasting it by pumping that much cash into a secondary starter. (UPDATE: The rumored "Kolb <---> DRC" deal makes more fiscal sense for the Eagles, and DRC is more than enough talent for the CB2 slot)

Philly already ranks 4th in the cornerback category and, based on this metric, would not improve their already lofty standings by moving 3 spots up after signing Nnamdi.

Your thoughts are welcome. This is my first fanpost. Hopefully you find it enjoyable. Thank you.

So all we have to do is sign Nnamdi and we get Home Field Advantage?

Well, I think we’ll be “just fine” with what we got right now.

Not very realistic.

Even with Nnamdi our pass defense will have problems. Our #2 will be a liability depending on who is playing there and if they can handle being the target a majority of the time. Whether Kareem steps up BIG time or some one like Allen behind him takes the spot and lives up to HIS 1st round pick selection is going to be the most important part of the pass defense. Because that’s where teams will go if we have a guy like Nnamdi on the other side.

We also will need another safety to complement Quin, who may or may not be a good player for us there. We are going to need at least average safety play because teams will be attacking us down the field. Or at least trying to.

The front 7 looks fantastic on paper but paper projections don’t win games. We will have several new players playing as well as two guys we are dependent on coming back from injuries last year and playing at a high level. Not to mention a new system everybody has to learn no matter how simple we’re being told it is to learn.

So ‘m not buying this. I’ve still got us penciled in with a 11-5 record but the defense won’t magically become dominant if we sign Nnamdi. It will take 2 maybe 3 years before we have the experience/talent for something like that. Realistically I see the defense at average or at best above average.

So not the second best team in the league. 12-9th sounds about right for this year.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

The way he's looking at his "system"

is that best pass rusher, OL, DB of each team is ranked for the whole group.
Scrabbs may be 1 or 2 in the league, but Scrabbs+KJax =/= top 10.

And yet, Scrabble + K-Jax + Quin + Nolan/Keo is probably still bottom ten.

Throw in nickel-CB, and you really need five solid contributors to field a respectable secondary. Signing Asomugha gives us about 1.5 depending on how Quin handles the switch to safety. And I assume he’s referring to “guys who knock down passes” in a not-so-literal way, because Asomugha hasn’t done much of that lately.

Texans are in such a bad spot...

The Harris kid out of Miami was supposedly first round talent had he come out as a junior, however, he regressed his senior year and it cost him a lot of money. Unfortunately, rookies like Harris who could develop with OTAs, regularly scheduled camps, and game film would’ve perhaps prepared the kid as a viable backup to our CB depth, but thats not the case now.

I’m all for a Scrabble signing, but I remain pessimistic about the whole abbreviated sweepstakes for his talents because of cap room and the Texans history of signing big names. What big name free agent have they signed? Umm…Zero.

I think the Texans sign two veterans to help the young guys in the secondary. Richard Marshall and Dewan Landry won’t break the bank. Landry will help Quinn come along as a FS and Marshall is a solid, under the radar CB who doesn’t make a lot of flashy plays, but rarely is exposed either. I think both of these players can sign four year deals in the neighbor hood of 13 million. Both very good deals for both players. The Texans get veteran leadership in the secondary whilst not having a shitload of money tied up on one super bad ass player. Just my .02

You might be a bit mistaken about Marshall.

His interception numbers give him some credence on espn, but PFF has him rated nearly as bad as Kareem Jackson. He has youth going for him at the very least, but he’s had some lousy years as an NFL CB. There are a few guys I’d take if Asomugha weren’t possible, but he’s not one of them. Too much of a gamble for a team that desperately needs somebody with demonstrated success.

IF the Texans do something wild and crazy

and sign Scrabble and Weddle

I can see that ranking of #2 being more realistic. Now we have 1/3 of the field shut down, and awesome support by Quinn and Weddle over the top and middle. Stick that in your bulged disc Manning, and try to beat us!

IF we sign Nnamdi and a decent safety

…and I knew they were throwing away from Nnamdi, I would pair a safety with whoever we decide on at CB #2. I think you would see a dramatic improvement, especially with a decent rush, and a COORDINATED EFFORT on defense.

Actually, I pretty much agree with a lot of what you said, including the 11-5 record, new unproven players, and a slow start. But I think 11-5 gets us in the playoffs, and if we are starting to gel as a team at the end of the season, confidence will be high. I think that is very important and could carry us quite a ways.

ESPN has us with about 7.6 Mill in cap room*

There’s some guys that could be cut that add a few more million to that, but that’s before signing our rookies(which should be cheaper with the new rookie scale) and any fill out the roster type free agents. I’m not seeing how we can sign Nmamdi, or even a Jonathan Joseph, with that little space available if they really did cut out a lot of the little tricks to manipulate the cap number. We’ll have to see if some of the big name free agents are willing to come down on their asking price, or are forced to come down because there are no takers. I seem to remember something about a one year $3 mill exception, but still. Of course I still don’t know enough about the details of the new cap rule to know if I’m reading this right or not.

I imagine every team has their cap guys furiously looking for loopholes already….and Tampa Bay HAS to spend big just to get to the cap minimum.

*I’m assuming that is at least fairly accurate.

I would like to see who that includes and at what positions

then, need to take into consideration current free agents that the team may or may not lose, and also fringe players that are making over the minimum that are cuttable, consider that someone has to take that position, then see what the gap is.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
