2011 Free Agent Watch: Day Three (Part III)
Sources say that Jersey Mike's has pulled into the lead in the race for the right to land my lunch rights today. Rumor is that it'll be a one-meal contract for less than $10.00, with a diner option to re-visit the deal sometime next week.
Beware, though...these are just rumors, and Little Pappasito's is still very much in the running.
Continue the prayer vigil for Nnamdi Asomugha, Johnathan Joseph, and/or Jacques Reeves in the Comments below.

DA Trade?
http://twitter.com/alexmarvez/statuses/96648195559534593
Some FOXSports.com NFL news: TEN cutting Tony Brown, DET cutting Jordon Dizon, HOU trying to trade WR David Anderson. Update posted ASAP
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter | Football Outsiders | Battle Red Blog
I said they'd cut him....
but I knew they wouldn’t stick with him. Dorin’s gotta be the 4…..rookie can compete for the 5.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Tolliver and Maehl are good pick ups.
I can see both of them pushing for a roster spot. Tolliver may already be in.
Maehl could fill a slot role fine.
DA’s making $1.4M, IIRC what bfd said, to sit behind 3 other guys…..while keeping Dorin on the sidelines. Dorin takes the 4 and a UFA takes the 5. It makes sense to develop some young guys behind 80, KW, and JJ….that’s what the 4 and 5 spots are supposed to be.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Exactly
Too much for a bench-warmer. Get a draft pick, even lower round, and I’m happy with it.
-- "...I was sick, napping, and then woke up and came to the computer to read a note from the Gingered Angel of Doom..." Martek - Dynamo Theory Blog
And not to slam on DA....
Guy’s 27, 28….this allows him to have an opportunity to make his mark elsewhere cause he wasn’t going to get it here.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Yep, precisely
He deserves a shot somewhere that has shit for WRs.

I am too
I think blame it on the coach is often a knee jerk reaction, or a resistance to admitting the players you’ve decided aren’t good enough.
The team felt like it had stagnated to me…and it was Panama. Which turned out to be the surprise team of the tournament so it wasn’t that bad…but at the time I was furious.
"If my hips had pockets, I wouldn't wear pants at all." @NotBurtReynolds
I was ready to boot Bradley after the men's world cup
the caliber of “passing” between players was just horrible. Anytime you kick the ball wildly down field and HOPE a team mate gets it .. it’s a crappy pass. That was the complete description of the men’s games in my opinion.
Any scores we made just felt like dumb luck. You can never win soccer game if you can’t reliably control the ball.
hell, I’d love to see Abby Wambach , Megan Rapinoe , and Alex Morgan show the men how soccer is REALLY played.

No the US had a couple of thrilling games in the world cup. They needed a miracle just to get out of the group
barely getting out of the group and losing to Ghana again immediately was a disappointment.
His greatest accomplishment was the confederation cup final after the win over Spain…but even then they were horrible in the group stage, and needed a miracle just to advance.

With all the talent he has at his disposal and the little he’s done with it, he should’ve gotten the boot long ago…
Now the next smart move for men's US soccer is to hire the women's coach.
She’s a genius and I like her style as a coach (singing, air guitar, dancing).
She KNOWS her soccer and did anyone notice how the women’s US soccer team possessed the ball much better than the men’s US soccer team? It was sort of embarrassing for the guys —in my opinion.
Either way, getting rid of Bradley is “teh awesome”!
I could settle for Klingsmann though for new head coach for the men ;-). Or was is Klinsmann?

I’m thinking that the Texans need to be AGGRESSIVELY trying to close plan “B” (2 second tier CBs and a Safety) and if it happens then just wave “bye bye” to Scrabble if he won’t commit.

At this point in the negotiation
It’s clear we have the most cash to offer and have yet to meet our cut off bid, so his agent is trying to use the Jets as leverage to squeeze every bit out of us they can. It doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t want to come here, but we’re clearly not his first choice so they intend to exploit the situation.

not exactly the same
but i think the way to beat the jets is the same as ravens(due mostly to ravens pass d not being as good)..RUN AT THEM..a and b gaps..seeing rex’s crazy blitz, imo, tends to confuse teh schaub..but when we just run at them we can set up the pass, cuz it will bak rex off his zone blitzs and play more man to stop the run
Last year though teams started to handle that blitz.
Texans and other teams got the better of that blitz in the second half of the game we played last year which is why jets fans have been crying about getting pass rushers. If they don’t blitz they struggle to pressure.
Plus you attack the Jets with slot and TE play in the middle of the field.Runs work to but not quite as effective.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
we r on the same page here
the pass plays im thinking are what ur saying..i said they end up in more man then we have slot or te crossing in the middle..i think we need to run up the gut on them a few times to really make this effective tho..if they are in the zone blitz then its hard to see if that crossing route will be open or not since u dont know which lb is in zone or in rush..but to me, when i went bak and watched the film schaub just looked antsy against the blitzs, jets and ravens especially
If he chooses the Jets it will backfire for him because it always does
Anything in life that sounds too good just backfires. See one “Big 3” team from Miami.

They could at least talk about how much improved Wade’s D will be if we actually sign him. I mean, for crying out loud they’ve done interviews with the Cowboys and Broncos for the last two days and they aren’t even in the running for any of the top free agents right now.
I’d at least like to hear the words “My sources with the Texans organization tell me…..”

This is just... wrong?
He’s a box-to-box midfielder with 90 minutes of stamina. He’s also got a (developing) range of passes and better vision than people give him credit. He’s also got a cracking shot and at 22 years old is likely getting better. He also gets stuck in on challenges and wins the ball.
Sure he’s a bit of a prick and prone to a dumb yellow card, but to say he’s so bad is just… wrong.
by DisplacedTexan on Jul 28, 2011 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions
Spot on
To me, the real crime is that no one will take a shot on him, which I think is more about his personality (or lack there of) than his skill.
by Calvin Paquette on Jul 28, 2011 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions
I'll give the kid credit...
He definitely takes up a lot of the field, but I’ve seen some horrendous passes come from him. He does have a nasty shot, but how important is that for someone who spends 85% of his time hanging out with Howard?
Again, I just don’t think he’s as good as everyone thinks he is. His creativity just isn’t there.
On this I will agree
He’s not a creative impetus. We need someone in front of him and Baby Bradley to play the Makelele / Diarra / Palacios / Sandro role.
by DisplacedTexan on Jul 28, 2011 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't understand the MB hate
Is he a punk ass? Yeah. But he has definitely done dirty work no one else on the team will. Without him, we don’t advance to the Confed Cup final, we don’t advance to the Gold Cup final, etc.. To me, our problem is creativity and not putting players in a position to succeed. Why the hell is Deuce sitting at winger when he broke Fulham’s scoring record at forward? Things like that.
by Calvin Paquette on Jul 28, 2011 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Bradley is not that bad
he has his games where he is on and others when he is shit. But i think its cause he knows no matter what daddy was gonna play him a full 90. I think he should be on the team but not as a starter, he could be really good off the bench

When i think of Okoye
I think “Why the bleach was this bleach taken 10th overall in any draft?”
Follow me on twitter: @Super_Stud2100
Nope.
Had the league’s worst missed tackle per attempt ratio from 2008-2010, and on a per snap basis he’s not even an effective pass-rusher.
I could see some value in him as a 4-3 DT
Hopefully he would improve there. You think he’d cost more than a 6th?
Onobun > Gates
Maybe, but only because of his age and draft position
Some will argue his lack of production on his age but I don’t buy that. Sure he’s still very young and has plenty of potential to develop into a solid player, but he hasn’t done it here and most of us are frankly tired of waiting. Plus, if he does start to produce it’ll be around the time for a new deal and I just can’t see sinking any more money into him.
I personally feel that if he was going to be great he would’ve flashed signs of it by now. Instead he’s only flashed signs of being good, and with us moving to a 3-4 he’s just eating up cap money IMO.
So I’d like to see us get a 4th for him but I highly doubt it. Maybe a 5th.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
do you forget what crappy defensive coaches we've had for Amobi's tenure?
Where is he supposed to learn how to excel under those coaches?
by BattleRedFan on Jul 28, 2011 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions
If you've read my previous posts you'll know I'm fully aware of our coaching situation
That doesn’t excuse the fact that Okoye hasn’t even come close to living up to the potential we drafted him for. I don’t care who his coaches are, most of us are honest enough with ourselves that we can admit that, just as in the case of David Carr and others.
That being said, I’ve also stated many times that in no way does that mean he can’t break out at some point, but if it happens it will most likely be a 4-3 team, which we are not. And it also will most likely be at a time that he’s due for a new deal that would pay him large money again. I for one can’t justify TWO top big time contracts for a player that didn’t fully earn the first one.
Coaching problems aside, Amobi Okoye has not shown he is top 10 talent to date.

Crabtree and Alex Smith are the 2 most divisive figures on the team.
To the media, both have said it was a misunderstanding. Take it how you will, but I can see it.
Alex Smith is a really nice guy, and I can’t see him throwing teammates under the bus. Many don’t like Crabtree because “he’s a diva” but I don’t see. I just think he’s very very awkward in front of the media. Look at video interviews (if you can, he shies away from media) and he looks so awkward/uncomfortable.
I personally still believe in Smith, and that Harbaugh can turn it around. We’ll see.

I’m very glad that the NFL draws up schedules now that don’t allow that to repeat.
AND I felt like the Colts owed their fans better in a home game — these people braved horrible weather to come see their team win — not to see their team “rest their starters”. You can watch your team rest starters from the comfort of your warm home.

You must be thinking through popularity of sports.
Because Houston is the leader in Oil and Gas in Texas. And like most other Texas cities, we are passionate about our teams.. For example, Texans games have been sold out every year and we haven’t even made the playoffs. That’s dedication.
That's pretty cool
Nice to meet fans from another long suffering organization. (Although the niners had their glory days, that was a while ago)
We shared a special moment, your team and ours:
The Reggie Bush bowl of 2005. That Kris Brown shank was a thing of beauty.

I can’t believe all these “Imagine what a backfield of Revis and Nnamdi would do. The Jets would be unstoppable on the way to the Super Bowl!”
The worst part is
that once he goes to a different team, the media will be like “what a STUNNING development!”
“COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED!”
Even though they were the only ones who bought the hype.
Ummmm....
We were here first, as I recall correctly. The numbers 4 and 9 came out of the middle of nowhere yesterday… We were in it even BEFORE the lockout was over.
Weeeeellllll....
We’re offering him the most, so I call top dollar priority, cost of living priority, no state taxes priority, bad ass bar-b-que priority, and Astrodome priority.
Hopefully that huge crib he's gonna buy
will cause enough property tax to even it out.
But that won’t happen. Apparently Nnamdi still drives his old beat up car from high school.
I'm just gonna throw this out there...
I don’t know if you’ll agree with me, but Texas is technically better than NY and California… Especially San Francisco. It’s obvious he wants to leave not just the city, but the state…
Really depends on the city
Austin is the only city I’ll live in in Texas. I love SF and NY, as well. Liked Denver, and I’d move to Portland or Seattle.
OTOH, I’d never live in LA.

of the problem, I’m not a fan of live music all that much, so having a thousand amateur bands doing shitty covers of Stevie Ray Vaughan songs doesn’t really blow my hair back.

Other way around, in my opinion.
People were constantly citing his high pressure numbers early on last season, but it’s more a product of snap count. If you look at it on a per-snap basis, he’s really not all that effective.
I disagree, but whatever
He didn’t meet expectations, so people rip on him, but he was still much better than average pass rusher at his position.

Right
Was he worth a first-round pick? No. Has he been terrible? Also, no.

Didnt really fit our 4-3 but osmebody may see if they can get something out of him.
At 24 he still has a lot of time and more experience than usual.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

I loathe Jamie Dukes
The guy is the worst commentator on NFLN. He talks out of his ass all day.
I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

im sure this has been reported already
Gimme some sack lunch
Waiting patiently for the next Texans 4th quarter collapse
They say Brad Smith wouldn't sign
because they were waiting to see what NNamdi did, and he didn’t want to wait.
If Jets don't get Nnamdi they will have lost a lot.
Their offense is going to be worse than it was last year.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
That's wrong
There was no way the Jets would pay someone 4m/yr to return kickoffs. That’s all.
Let me stir the fire.
Paul Kuharsky
Yes. right now I think #Jaguars are better at linebacker than #Texans. Barwin and Reed have done nothing. Mario not a LB. Ryans healing.

Gah. Enter fail.
He’s really not, though. He has four teams to cover, and he usually gives us a fair shake.
You work for BSPN...
Someone check his tag…
I loathe it...
But I think Kuharsky gets a bum rap. Fans are always going to think that the guys they watch all year long are the best at their positions. Hell, there were plenty of Texans fans in 2008 who thought Slaton was better than CJ and MJD. When PK suggested otherwise, the word “hater” was thrown around. Maybe I’m alone here, but I think he does a pretty good job. His column is one of the first things I go to when I’m looking for news.
I read his blog...
But at the same time, he’s made it well known that Tennessee is his home state and that the Titans is the team he roots for. Can’t be a homer and non-biased when you’re covering inner-division rivals…
Certainly.
It’s where he started, and no doubt he has the most contacts there. But he seems to call ’em like he sees ’em. Hell, he was quicker to turn on Vince Young than most Houston columnists.
I'll second that. Kuharsky's ok
Not super positive about the Texans, true, but I do think he’s being honest in his opinions
I "work" for ESPN.
Kuharsky is fine.

seriously
Can we just get rid of the word hater from the English language. People act like calling someone who disagrees with you a hater is a valid substitute for a well reasoned argument. Khuharsky made a valid point although I do think we have much more potential.
Calling someone a hater is what Vince Young’s fanboys resort to when they run out of excuses for his bad QB play. Or what Lebron defenders use to explain “the decision” being a dickhead move…as if calling people haters somehow makes said dickhead move OK.

As a PSU alum I have a man-crush on Poz
but I’m not sure I agree with all that
"Every time you go to that cook-off you get drunk as a poet on payday!"
Can't argue with that.
Daryl Smith is criminally underrated, and Poz is every bit as good as DeMeco if he can stay healthy.
On the other hand, if Cushing can play even half as well as he did his rookie season, that might change.
Sessions isn't better
and Paul Polishguy gets hurt all the time.
apples and oranges really
