2011 Free Agent Watch: Day Three (Part III)

Sources say that Jersey Mike's has pulled into the lead in the race for the right to land my lunch rights today. Rumor is that it'll be a one-meal contract for less than $10.00, with a diner option to re-visit the deal sometime next week.

Beware, though...these are just rumors, and Little Pappasito's is still very much in the running.

Continue the prayer vigil for Nnamdi Asomugha, Johnathan Joseph, and/or Jacques Reeves in the Comments below.

by riversmccown on Jul 28, 2011 1:31 PM CDT reply actions

I said they'd cut him....

but I knew they wouldn’t stick with him. Dorin’s gotta be the 4…..rookie can compete for the 5.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 28, 2011 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Tolliver and Maehl are good pick ups.

I can see both of them pushing for a roster spot. Tolliver may already be in.

by Jahon on Jul 28, 2011 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Maehl could fill a slot role fine.

DA’s making $1.4M, IIRC what bfd said, to sit behind 3 other guys…..while keeping Dorin on the sidelines. Dorin takes the 4 and a UFA takes the 5. It makes sense to develop some young guys behind 80, KW, and JJ….that’s what the 4 and 5 spots are supposed to be.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 28, 2011 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Too much for a bench-warmer. Get a draft pick, even lower round, and I’m happy with it.

And whoever it is, will be judged quickly. Especially with a game against El Tri coming up.

I’ll be interested who they get as a replacement…Is Bielsa still available.?

I think blame it on the coach is often a knee jerk reaction, or a resistance to admitting the players you’ve decided aren’t good enough.

The team felt like it had stagnated to me…and it was Panama. Which turned out to be the surprise team of the tournament so it wasn’t that bad…but at the time I was furious.

I was ready to boot Bradley after the men's world cup

the caliber of “passing” between players was just horrible. Anytime you kick the ball wildly down field and HOPE a team mate gets it .. it’s a crappy pass. That was the complete description of the men’s games in my opinion.

Any scores we made just felt like dumb luck. You can never win soccer game if you can’t reliably control the ball.

hell, I’d love to see Abby Wambach , Megan Rapinoe , and Alex Morgan show the men how soccer is REALLY played.

by BattleRedFan on Jul 28, 2011 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

No the US had a couple of thrilling games in the world cup. They needed a miracle just to get out of the group

barely getting out of the group and losing to Ghana again immediately was a disappointment.

His greatest accomplishment was the confederation cup final after the win over Spain…but even then they were horrible in the group stage, and needed a miracle just to advance.

Now the next smart move for men's US soccer is to hire the women's coach.

She’s a genius and I like her style as a coach (singing, air guitar, dancing).

She KNOWS her soccer and did anyone notice how the women’s US soccer team possessed the ball much better than the men’s US soccer team? It was sort of embarrassing for the guys —in my opinion.

Either way, getting rid of Bradley is “teh awesome”!

I could settle for Klingsmann though for new head coach for the men ;-). Or was is Klinsmann?

I am just DYIN' to see...

1) What Bellicheat does to “manage” Fat Albert…
2) Just how much Fat Albert nob-slobbering the media does when Bellicheat tries to exert said discipline.
You’d have thought that Shanahan was making Fat Al wear a clown costume and walk up and down the street from the comments that the media was making last year.
This will definitely be entertaining to watch.

At this point in the negotiation

It’s clear we have the most cash to offer and have yet to meet our cut off bid, so his agent is trying to use the Jets as leverage to squeeze every bit out of us they can. It doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t want to come here, but we’re clearly not his first choice so they intend to exploit the situation.

by Ethan Matz on Jul 28, 2011 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

not exactly the same

but i think the way to beat the jets is the same as ravens(due mostly to ravens pass d not being as good)..RUN AT THEM..a and b gaps..seeing rex’s crazy blitz, imo, tends to confuse teh schaub..but when we just run at them we can set up the pass, cuz it will bak rex off his zone blitzs and play more man to stop the run

by Mike Ram on Jul 28, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year though teams started to handle that blitz.

Texans and other teams got the better of that blitz in the second half of the game we played last year which is why jets fans have been crying about getting pass rushers. If they don’t blitz they struggle to pressure.

Plus you attack the Jets with slot and TE play in the middle of the field.Runs work to but not quite as effective.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

by Ethan Matz on Jul 28, 2011 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

we r on the same page here

the pass plays im thinking are what ur saying..i said they end up in more man then we have slot or te crossing in the middle..i think we need to run up the gut on them a few times to really make this effective tho..if they are in the zone blitz then its hard to see if that crossing route will be open or not since u dont know which lb is in zone or in rush..but to me, when i went bak and watched the film schaub just looked antsy against the blitzs, jets and ravens especially

by Mike Ram on Jul 28, 2011 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

If he chooses the Jets it will backfire for him because it always does

Anything in life that sounds too good just backfires. See one “Big 3” team from Miami.

As far as the NY hype goes.

The more I think about it it sounds like pure media hype. He and his agent know the Jets can’t offer more than the Texans or 49ers. If he really wanted to be a Jet he’d have gone.

I think this posturing is and effort to get more out of the Texans.

That or he’s weighing the pro/cons of playing in Houston or NY.

The kid is all muscle and hustle with 0 to -80 on the touch. I’ve seen kids as old as 8 that have a better first touch than he does. Srsly… He’s not as good as everyone wants to think he is.

by Bennyscrap on Jul 28, 2011 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

This is just... wrong?

He’s a box-to-box midfielder with 90 minutes of stamina. He’s also got a (developing) range of passes and better vision than people give him credit. He’s also got a cracking shot and at 22 years old is likely getting better. He also gets stuck in on challenges and wins the ball.

Sure he’s a bit of a prick and prone to a dumb yellow card, but to say he’s so bad is just… wrong.

by DisplacedTexan on Jul 28, 2011 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Spot on

To me, the real crime is that no one will take a shot on him, which I think is more about his personality (or lack there of) than his skill.

by Calvin Paquette on Jul 28, 2011 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll give the kid credit...

He definitely takes up a lot of the field, but I’ve seen some horrendous passes come from him. He does have a nasty shot, but how important is that for someone who spends 85% of his time hanging out with Howard?

Again, I just don’t think he’s as good as everyone thinks he is. His creativity just isn’t there.

by Bennyscrap on Jul 28, 2011 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

On this I will agree

He’s not a creative impetus. We need someone in front of him and Baby Bradley to play the Makelele / Diarra / Palacios / Sandro role.

by DisplacedTexan on Jul 28, 2011 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't understand the MB hate

Is he a punk ass? Yeah. But he has definitely done dirty work no one else on the team will. Without him, we don’t advance to the Confed Cup final, we don’t advance to the Gold Cup final, etc.. To me, our problem is creativity and not putting players in a position to succeed. Why the hell is Deuce sitting at winger when he broke Fulham’s scoring record at forward? Things like that.

by Calvin Paquette on Jul 28, 2011 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Bradley is not that bad

he has his games where he is on and others when he is shit. But i think its cause he knows no matter what daddy was gonna play him a full 90. I think he should be on the team but not as a starter, he could be really good off the bench

Hopefully he would improve there. You think he’d cost more than a 6th?

Onobun > Gates

by Carneros on Jul 28, 2011 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe, but only because of his age and draft position

Some will argue his lack of production on his age but I don’t buy that. Sure he’s still very young and has plenty of potential to develop into a solid player, but he hasn’t done it here and most of us are frankly tired of waiting. Plus, if he does start to produce it’ll be around the time for a new deal and I just can’t see sinking any more money into him.

I personally feel that if he was going to be great he would’ve flashed signs of it by now. Instead he’s only flashed signs of being good, and with us moving to a 3-4 he’s just eating up cap money IMO.

So I’d like to see us get a 4th for him but I highly doubt it. Maybe a 5th.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Jul 28, 2011 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

If you've read my previous posts you'll know I'm fully aware of our coaching situation

That doesn’t excuse the fact that Okoye hasn’t even come close to living up to the potential we drafted him for. I don’t care who his coaches are, most of us are honest enough with ourselves that we can admit that, just as in the case of David Carr and others.

That being said, I’ve also stated many times that in no way does that mean he can’t break out at some point, but if it happens it will most likely be a 4-3 team, which we are not. And it also will most likely be at a time that he’s due for a new deal that would pay him large money again. I for one can’t justify TWO top big time contracts for a player that didn’t fully earn the first one.

Coaching problems aside, Amobi Okoye has not shown he is top 10 talent to date.

Yikes

Crabtree and Alex Smith are the 2 most divisive figures on the team.

To the media, both have said it was a misunderstanding. Take it how you will, but I can see it.

Alex Smith is a really nice guy, and I can’t see him throwing teammates under the bus. Many don’t like Crabtree because “he’s a diva” but I don’t see. I just think he’s very very awkward in front of the media. Look at video interviews (if you can, he shies away from media) and he looks so awkward/uncomfortable.

I personally still believe in Smith, and that Harbaugh can turn it around. We’ll see.

You must be thinking through popularity of sports.

Because Houston is the leader in Oil and Gas in Texas. And like most other Texas cities, we are passionate about our teams.. For example, Texans games have been sold out every year and we haven’t even made the playoffs. That’s dedication.

In Austin we have guys like Bob Schneider, The Gourds and Willie Nelson. I haven’t heard a crappy cover of anything since I left Houston.

Other way around, in my opinion.

People were constantly citing his high pressure numbers early on last season, but it’s more a product of snap count. If you look at it on a per-snap basis, he’s really not all that effective.

by Nashmeister on Jul 28, 2011 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree, but whatever

He didn’t meet expectations, so people rip on him, but he was still much better than average pass rusher at his position.

by Nashmeister on Jul 28, 2011 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I loathe it...

But I think Kuharsky gets a bum rap. Fans are always going to think that the guys they watch all year long are the best at their positions. Hell, there were plenty of Texans fans in 2008 who thought Slaton was better than CJ and MJD. When PK suggested otherwise, the word “hater” was thrown around. Maybe I’m alone here, but I think he does a pretty good job. His column is one of the first things I go to when I’m looking for news.

by Nashmeister on Jul 28, 2011 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I read his blog...

But at the same time, he’s made it well known that Tennessee is his home state and that the Titans is the team he roots for. Can’t be a homer and non-biased when you’re covering inner-division rivals…

by Bennyscrap on Jul 28, 2011 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Certainly.

It’s where he started, and no doubt he has the most contacts there. But he seems to call ’em like he sees ’em. Hell, he was quicker to turn on Vince Young than most Houston columnists.

by Nashmeister on Jul 28, 2011 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll second that. Kuharsky's ok

Not super positive about the Texans, true, but I do think he’s being honest in his opinions

by JBal on Jul 28, 2011 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

seriously

Can we just get rid of the word hater from the English language. People act like calling someone who disagrees with you a hater is a valid substitute for a well reasoned argument. Khuharsky made a valid point although I do think we have much more potential.

Calling someone a hater is what Vince Young’s fanboys resort to when they run out of excuses for his bad QB play. Or what Lebron defenders use to explain “the decision” being a dickhead move…as if calling people haters somehow makes said dickhead move OK.
