2011 Free Agent Watch: What Do We Know After Day Five?
This post will be more of a rapid-fire update than anything else. Without further ado...
1. Amobi Okoye and David Anderson are no longer Houston Texans. I'm sad to see DA go. Amobi gets his own post, hopefully within the next day or three.
2. Okoye wasn't out of work long, as he's already signed a one-year deal with the Bears.
3. Shiloh Keo, Derek Newton, and Cheta Ozougwu all signed with the Texans today.
4. Here's a transcript of Danieal Manning and Johnathan Joseph's introductory press conference at Reliant.
5. Dan Orlovsky was cut and quickly signed with Indianapolis.
6. Vonta Leach is still unsigned, though he has several suitors.
If I missed anything, let us know in the Comments.

I keep wondering what the hold up might be. But Butler (for those who don’t know thats what you mean) has not put his signature to the contract yet.
Hopefully it is just logistics of getting a signature

Ty Warren
Any update on him wanting to sign with us for minimum wage, apparently its being reported on CBS.Sports & bleacher report
Don't even know if the feeling is mutual
He’s a Texas boy, which is probably why he’d want to play for us or the cokeboys. Missed all of 2010 with an injury, and he’s already 30. The FO is normally fairly ageist, and we have quite a bit of depth at DE. I know I’d at least like to kick the tires on him, though.

would you guys be interested in the following dt's?
I’m not sure if they are still available but I’m going off of what BSPN has.
Derek Landri
Age: 27 Height: 6-2 Weight: 290lbs
Grade: 59
Expert’s Take:
Landri is a slightly undersized defensive tackle who relies on initial quickness, agility and good technique to get the job done. He can struggle when asked to play in a two-gap system, where he has to squeeze blocks down and control both gaps due to his lack of power and strength. He is quick to read blocking schemes and locate the level of the ball and takes good angles to get to the play. He has above-average lateral range and will make his share of plays outside of the box due to effort and good angles.
Clifton Ryan
Age: 27 Weight:324 Height:6’3"
Grade: 64
Expert’s Take:
Ryan is a thick, wide body with adequate initial quickness, agility and body control. He can hunker down and set a strong anchor when at the point of attack but is not apt to make many plays on the perimeter. He fits the mold of the old two-gap defensive lineman who can occupy two blockers and free up his linebackers to run and make plays. He flashes the ability to collapse the pocket with a strong bull rush but lacks the agility and upfield acceleration to provide much of a pass rush from the inside. He could do a better job of monitoring his weight as he tends to balloon in the off season.
Feeling the five stages of grief since 2002.

Not a very good replacement for Mikell.
Then again he may not be expected to do much against the pass.

Well they had to sign someone opposite Holmes
But I don’t think he’s going to match the production Edwards had last season.

We all agree that 2006 was the Texans best draft class right? Well from that class we just got Danieal Manning who went 40th and Johnathan Joseph who went 24th and Jason Allen who went 16th and Matt Leinhart went 10th. Kinda funny how times have changed.
Yeah it occurred to me last night that our best defensive players came from that 2006 draft

But if he does get released, he could go to a lot worse places than Houston. Though I suspect he’d want to have a starting role as inside linebacker and those are kinda filled.

Thats ok on him
Seattle asked Tatupu to take a pay-cut, and he responded by requesting his release. Schefter says the Seahawks are planning to do so “reluctantly.” Coming of two knee surgeries, Tatupu won’t be able to approach his $4.35 million salary anywhere else. He would probably be best off swallowing his pride and returning to the Seahawks at a reduced rate.

The real story
Nnamdi and his agent were purely just trying to drive up the price, regardless of what team it was coming from. Then, when the top price dropped out, the Texans, they got desperate and took the next best price, the Eagles. The moral of the story is, Nnamdi and his agent got greedy and lost the best price and now they are fabricating a story to try to save face.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Its the money, not the team
Nnamdi is no different from all the other free agents looking for money. There’s nothing wrong with the Jets. They have a team that’s been in the AFC Championship the last two seasons. They have a good defensive system. For Nnamdi to say he wanted the Eagles more, yes he did, because they offered more money. Has nothing to do with likes or dislikes of the team. He likes the money. The money.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
exaclty....
it was like He never wanted to actually come here. So if we offered an obscene ammount he would have had no other choice. But Rick Smith was shrewd and got a guy who actually saw this place as somewhere he WANTED to play. I am proud of our FO

Regarding the Texans
It was all timing. Rick Smith had he timetable. Nnamdi and his agent had their timetable. Rick Smith needed to get a decision so he could follow through with his plan. Nnamdi and his agent didn’t comply because they were too busy playing the game of trying to get more and more money. Rick Smith didn’t want to get burned, so too bad Nnamdi, the deal is off the table and the Texans pulled the string on their other deal. Simple logistics. Rick Smith comes out the big winner on this. Nnamdi is left taking a lesser offer.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Sad, just sad.
He jerked every team around. I’m even more happy now that our FO saw this wasn’t going to work out for them and got the second best CB and a top 5 safety instead. And I feel no sympathy for the Jets because they got greedy and got played.
Not only did they get burned by Nnamdi.
But now they are going to seriously overpay Cromartie because they missed out on all the talented CB’s that could have played next to Revis for cheaper.
Not to mention a chance to bring in another decent WR.

To bad. They could have gotten comparable talent for much less.
The Jets are “closing in” on a deal with free agent CB Antonio Cromartie, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
We’ll be interested to hear the contract numbers on this one. After losing out on Nnamdi Asomugha, the Jets were desperate to bring back Cromartie. They paid just $3 million for their No. 2 receiver and already had cleared out heaps of cap space in the Asomugha chase. Cromartie may have landed himself $10 million per season.

I mean, yes, their secondary looks good.
Their front 4 looks better than it did last year with upgrades in Babin and Jenkins but their linebacker core is still shotty. If i were playing them, either run the ball or have tight ends run slants in front of their LB’s.
Exactly.
One of the ESPN analysts gave a grade for how we did in FA and he gave us a B. At that point, I turned off the TV because I knew that anything we do means absolutely nothing to ESPN. Signed the second best CB and a a top 5 safety in FA and we still get a B???

We went with the solid DE a top 3 CB a first round rated OLB and we get a B-….Before the offseason started we needed secondary help. we now have a stud CB and a stud S. and 2 young eager CB’sand oh yeah JA for a whole year to see what he has for us not to mention a concensious 1st rd pick (Kjax) who with some good coaching finally might get the light to turn on
Ya and the pats got an A for zoning HAynesworth and ochocinci????

same guy. looks like he is the one playing the games. he has cost Namdi millions and who knows what city he actually wanted to play in. Now it seems like he is just playing with Cro’s life. I’d be pissed. I wonder if other players are watching this? How do they percieve this guy? Namdi could have basically named his price and picked his destination at the beginning. I feel like he ended up with only 2 options in the end…NY and PHI
Is it just me
or is Aubrayo Franklin’s camp astonishingly quiet for someone who is supposed to get top-flight NT money this offseason? I haven’t even heard any good rumors from the most rumor-y of the rumormongers, just pure speculation.
He was the best runstopping NT in the NFL last year, but I’ve heard he only plays to his contract years.
I know SF wants him back, and have heard rumblings of the Chiefs wanting him, but other than that nothin. Does anyone else have any good info on him?
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
So only teams with Red Jerseys
Would that mean he would only “play” in one game for us?

Matt Turk drove 14 hours from Houston to Jacksonville Saturday to join his new team, the third player in the AFC South to jump teams inside the division.
The Jaguars beat out the Giants, the Eagles and Texans for his services.
"Houston was in it, Houston wanted me to wait until after Saturday afternoon when they worked two punters out," he said. “I was like, ‘You want me to wait around? I can’t do it.’”.
The two punters were Daniel Sepulveda and David Zastidal.
Now Turk, who’s 43 and already being called "grandpa" and "coach," replaces Adam Podlesh, who jumped to Chicago.
He suffered a hip flexor injury six games into last season and played trough it while posting a not-very-good net average of 36.8 yards in his final season with the Texans.

He was good for a few years, and maybe the injury was more than he wanted to admit last year
but his performance was dismal even by college standards. A professional should know when to step out and/or be honest with trainers and coaches.
honestly
I hated him from day 1 minute 1. I was sooo pissed we let go Chad Stanley. I have never seen him land a punt inside the 25 ever. it’s either at the 30 or 5 yrds in the endzone. he does have a good average distance. but thats it
Not that it mattered where it wound up last year

we ran alot of 2 TE for the past few years. just because a TE lines up behind the line dont mean he is still a E does it? or we actually gonna have 3 TE’s on the field with all those dope ass recievers? other than gole line and short yardage that would be crazy

Glad the Colts are making improvements.
Colts RT Ryan Diem has agreed to a pay cut to stay on Indianapolis’ roster.
Diem was due a $5.4 million salary in the final year of his contract. After struggling mightily in pass protection last season, the 32-year-old would have been released if not for the restructuring. Diem graded out as Pro Football Focus’ 70th-rated tackle among 78 last season. He was an even worse 75th in run blocking, which isn’t what you want from a strong-side lineman.

"How bout that ride in. I guess that's why they call it sin city."
This actually would not be a bad bet
Especially considering the riot of silence about the Texans in the national media. We’ll hardly be favored in any game at this point I’d think. In fact, if you just bet on the Texans to win every game, because of the odds I think you’d come out way ahead at the end of the year (although the beginning would be rough)
"A threat is about a verb short of a win..." - TEXSON
I'm not a huge sportbetter
so I’m going to start with only a $100 bankroll. Hope to double on up (or whatever) week 1 on us, then keep my bets smaller for the rest of the season.
Like fantasy football, it gets you more involved in other teams and the game as a whole.
I agree with you.
Last year’s “statement game” was the opener vs Colts and got the media globbing all over us for a few weeks until Frank Bush’s vanilla defense and our offensive slow starts tore us off the rails.
I think this year’s “statement game” will be at home vs Steelers. If we can send them packing in a stunning and complete game of ass whooping, the media will be back on the Texans big time.
One game at a time though, let’s knock the Colts into the basement first!
I think if we pulled off the road game in NO we'd get a lot of attention.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
I just got stationed in Vegas
and thats all they talk about on sports radio here it seems… All the lines. I was thinking about doing the same thing.
"How bout that ride in. I guess that's why they call it sin city."
Ouch!
I’ve been up to good ole Cowshitta as my relatives in Natchitoches called it lol.

Meant to reply! Im embarrassed… I really thought I had that one guys.

The poker players there are the weakest I have ever seen
Very confident fish at that place. Its worth being around a bunch of old people.
nice... It's good to make a return on time and gas invested

Definitely
but you need a bigger roll compared to online.
The blackjack there is also very favorable for card counters. Stand on soft 17, very little pit heat and halfway decent deck penetration.
So do you play Texas Hold 'Em primarily? or is it BlackJack? Stud?
If Hold’Em, do you play limit? What limit?
Pot Limit?
No Limit?

I mainly play No Limit Hold 'Em tournaments. $200 buyin Saturdays at Coushatta
before Pokerstars went down I was primarily a Sit and Go NLHE player.
Used to hustle blackjack bonuses online for $1000/week before the UIEGA too.
I count cards (Red 7 count) and play live blackjack when I can find a favorable game.
It's amazing how different No Limit and Limit are...
Completely different games…
No Limit is just too much psychology for me…
I played several thousand hands of low-limit online before the FIRST pass they took at banning. I donated quite a bit to the community ;-) I suck

In some of the reading I've done...
…they assert that a “GOOD” player can make (playing limit hold ’em) the equivalent of the Large Blind per hour… That would mean playing at some hefty stakes to make it worthwhile…
I need to practice with the little fishies more.

Its too bad what has happened to online Poker
That’s the best place to cut you teeth. Minimal investment, lots of money making opportunities and you get a ton of experience FAST if you multi-table.
I used to 12 table $16 buyin SNGs at Stars. I miss it so damn much.
Last year I took 7th in a 5300 person $11 tourney on stars – enough money to send me to London and Crete.
Sweet...
Yeah, I played probably about 10,000 hands before I did a personal intervention with myself.
I was relying too heavily on the technology to track tendencies and hand odds so I really wasn’t learning skills that would translate to real world stuff.
I’d figured out the virtues of “tightness” and had stopped chasing anything with an ace in it, but still have a ways to go in remembering odds-to-make stuff.

That's actually a great way to get a foundation for live play.
If the Coushatta tournaments are any indication, no one can lay down a weak ace.
Yeah, I love the guys that play Ace-whatever...
But I’ve been burned on pocket rockets so many times that if they ain’t suited I’m not sticking around if I have to pay to do it and then only for a flush draw.

Live it seems like everyone learned how to play from TV
They play WAY too many hands and call almost wide open with weak aces.
At least at the coushatta games.
Yeah, and that is one of the things...
…that differentiates limit from no-limit and professionals from amateurs.
The professionals play some “iffy” stuff in no-limit because psychology and tendencies are SUCH a big part of it.
But if you are in a low-limit game, you are going to be playing call-machines and you’d better have a hand to ride through because you AREN’T chasing anyone out of a pot.

I've never played in a casino...
…and mostly because I wasn’t sure which ones had low-limit hold ‘em available. If I could find one that was within about a 6 hour drive of Austin, I’d probably take a weekend to have the experience.

You might try Isle of Capri
Kind of dirty, but word is there is a lot of action at limit cash tables. Not sure what the blinds are but they tend to have cheaper games there. You usually need to get there early or be on the waiting list.
Lake Charles is about 4.5 hours from Austin.
Excellent...
I’ve also heard good things about those new casinos just across the line in OK… (Wynn?) But just need to find someone that can verify that they have limit hold ’em.

WINSTAR AND CHEROKEE I THINK
WINSTAR HAS A NICE ROOM 30+ TABLES
What did he were last offseason?
Since I only saw him on one play…
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
Will there be a pre-season game BRB get together this year?
Was kind of nice to meet the posters here last year. Even Rip!
It was more a sausagefest than a zimafest
but that’s only because the only Zima available in the united states is at Tim’s house and we were at a bar instead.
Working On It
Odds are that it’ll be on August 27th.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
12 years. The coaches just need to go ahead and marry him.
I would have thought him gone before Amobi or DA
You give me a football, and you give me a dream. You give me the game of football and you give me a life long job.
Thought we'd have heard something.
I mean we all knew they would, and had proof, for DA and Amobi
You give me a football, and you give me a dream. You give me the game of football and you give me a life long job.
Trying to get a trade offer probably.
If healthy someone may be able to squeeze a 1000 yards out of him.
At the very least he’s a change of pace or 3rd down RB.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
Now it makes sense
You give me a football, and you give me a dream. You give me the game of football and you give me a life long job.
I wonder if were are also keeping him as insurance.
In case someone goes down like Tate did.
Then if everyone makes it through the preseason healthy he gets cut as teams downsize to 53.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
yea i really think show him off.
Dont have Foster or Ward get hurt. Just let tate and Slate run. how far have we come from that name last preseason

Now our team is healthy!

Good we need him and Demeco healthy.

i hope they really are ready and cleared.
DOnt expect much out the first preseason game. Hope they play just one series.
Barwin is going to be extremely important this year.
I hope he’s all right. He’s poised to have a breakout season as a rusher under Wade Phillips.
Barwin looked GOOD last year pre-injury...
Looking forward to seeing what he can do if 100%

Here's to you getting another 1500 year under your belt Andre.
Andre Johnson confirmed that he’s “100 percent healthy and ready to go” after undergoing arthroscopic ankle surgery in January.
Johnson sustained the injury in Week 2, playing through pain the rest of the season. If not for three games missed due to the injury, Johnson would have become the first receiver in NFL history with three consecutive 1,500-yard seasons. He’s the No. 1 receiver in Rotoworld’s Draft Guide.

lol

One of the funniest things Terrence Toliver said to the media is that Matt Schaub & Leinart are more pro ready than LSU QBs. Uh, yes.
Extends Tolliver's upside potential.
He never really had a qb that could get the ball to him in stride.
tolliver will make team.
he got the arian foster treatment. which is okay with me cause he will be good.
I watched some LSU games last season.
They literally were playing two Qb’s at the same time. Shuffling them in and out of the game in different situations.
Toliver’s biggest knock was his lack of numbers so we have gotten quite the steal with him because he’s got all the makings of a very good #2 WR maybe #1.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
#2 you say?!
Thank God for football!

In a few years yes.

i was /Nutting
or at least i THINK that was him.. someone the other day was having an aneurism about needing an elite number 2 receiver.

That was TEXANSON or something.
Different guys.

Did he really want to come here, or did he just want to get the hell out of Cincy ASAP knowing Houston was his best chance of escape?

We were kicking the Jets sideways last season
and would have beaten them with an average defense on our side.
I think we match up great against Pitt.
I am worried about NE though, especially with hoodie and his FA pickups.
The reality is Pittsburgh does not match up well against us
Questionable O line on their part and a balanced offensive attack on ours
