2011 Free Agent Watch: What Do We Know After Day Five?

This post will be more of a rapid-fire update than anything else. Without further ado...

Star-divide

1. Amobi Okoye and David Anderson are no longer Houston Texans. I'm sad to see DA go. Amobi gets his own post, hopefully within the next day or three.

2. Okoye wasn't out of work long, as he's already signed a one-year deal with the Bears.

3. Shiloh Keo, Derek Newton, and Cheta Ozougwu all signed with the Texans today.

4. Here's a transcript of Danieal Manning and Johnathan Joseph's introductory press conference at Reliant.

5. Dan Orlovsky was cut and quickly signed with Indianapolis.

6. Vonta Leach is still unsigned, though he has several suitors.

If I missed anything, let us know in the Comments.

This kid was a product of poor coaching and/or a scheme that didnt play to his strengths, i truly believe that he will show what he can really do in chicago. Im happy with our FO moves except this one!

Don't even know if the feeling is mutual

He’s a Texas boy, which is probably why he’d want to play for us or the cokeboys. Missed all of 2010 with an injury, and he’s already 30. The FO is normally fairly ageist, and we have quite a bit of depth at DE. I know I’d at least like to kick the tires on him, though.

would you guys be interested in the following dt's?

I’m not sure if they are still available but I’m going off of what BSPN has.

Derek Landri

Age: 27 Height: 6-2 Weight: 290lbs

Grade: 59
Expert’s Take:

Landri is a slightly undersized defensive tackle who relies on initial quickness, agility and good technique to get the job done. He can struggle when asked to play in a two-gap system, where he has to squeeze blocks down and control both gaps due to his lack of power and strength. He is quick to read blocking schemes and locate the level of the ball and takes good angles to get to the play. He has above-average lateral range and will make his share of plays outside of the box due to effort and good angles.

Clifton Ryan

Age: 27 Weight:324 Height:6’3"

Grade: 64
Expert’s Take:

Ryan is a thick, wide body with adequate initial quickness, agility and body control. He can hunker down and set a strong anchor when at the point of attack but is not apt to make many plays on the perimeter. He fits the mold of the old two-gap defensive lineman who can occupy two blockers and free up his linebackers to run and make plays. He flashes the ability to collapse the pocket with a strong bull rush but lacks the agility and upfield acceleration to provide much of a pass rush from the inside. He could do a better job of monitoring his weight as he tends to balloon in the off season.

Feeling the five stages of grief since 2002.

We all agree that 2006 was the Texans best draft class right? Well from that class we just got Danieal Manning who went 40th and Johnathan Joseph who went 24th and Jason Allen who went 16th and Matt Leinhart went 10th. Kinda funny how times have changed.

Seattle asked Tatupu to take a pay-cut, and he responded by requesting his release. Schefter says the Seahawks are planning to do so “reluctantly.” Coming of two knee surgeries, Tatupu won’t be able to approach his $4.35 million salary anywhere else. The real story

Nnamdi and his agent were purely just trying to drive up the price, regardless of what team it was coming from. Then, when the top price dropped out, the Texans, they got desperate and took the next best price, the Eagles. The moral of the story is, Nnamdi and his agent got greedy and lost the best price and now they are fabricating a story to try to save face.

Its the money, not the team

Nnamdi is no different from all the other free agents looking for money. There’s nothing wrong with the Jets. They have a team that’s been in the AFC Championship the last two seasons. They have a good defensive system. For Nnamdi to say he wanted the Eagles more, yes he did, because they offered more money. Has nothing to do with likes or dislikes of the team. He likes the money. The money.

To bad. They could have gotten comparable talent for much less.
The Jets are “closing in” on a deal with free agent CB Antonio Cromartie, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
We’ll be interested to hear the contract numbers on this one. After losing out on Nnamdi Asomugha, the Jets were desperate to bring back Cromartie. They paid just $3 million for their No. 2 receiver and already had cleared out heaps of cap space in the Asomugha chase. Cromartie may have landed himself $10 million per season.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

I mean, yes, their secondary looks good.

Their front 4 looks better than it did last year with upgrades in Babin and Jenkins but their linebacker core is still shotty. If i were playing them, either run the ball or have tight ends run slants in front of their LB’s.

Exactly.

One of the ESPN analysts gave a grade for how we did in FA and he gave us a B. At that point, I turned off the TV because I knew that anything we do means absolutely nothing to ESPN. Signed the second best CB and a a top 5 safety in FA and we still get a B???

Matt Turk drove 14 hours from Houston to Jacksonville Saturday to join his new team, the third player in the AFC South to jump teams inside the division.

The Jaguars beat out the Giants, the Eagles and Texans for his services.

"Houston was in it, Houston wanted me to wait until after Saturday afternoon when they worked two punters out," he said. “I was like, ‘You want me to wait around? I can’t do it.’”.

The two punters were Daniel Sepulveda and David Zastidal.

Now Turk, who’s 43 and already being called "grandpa" and "coach," replaces Adam Podlesh, who jumped to Chicago.

He suffered a hip flexor injury six games into last season and played trough it while posting a not-very-good net average of 36.8 yards in his final season with the Texans.

To be able to use different offensive sets like that only makes the team better.

Especially with our talented TE’s that Kubiak stocks up on.Imaging trying to cover them with LB/S.

Glad the Colts are making improvements.
Colts RT Ryan Diem has agreed to a pay cut to stay on Indianapolis’ roster.
Diem was due a $5.4 million salary in the final year of his contract. After struggling mightily in pass protection last season, the 32-year-old would have been released if not for the restructuring. Diem graded out as Pro Football Focus’ 70th-rated tackle among 78 last season. He was an even worse 75th in run blocking, which isn’t what you want from a strong-side lineman.

I agree with you.

Last year’s “statement game” was the opener vs Colts and got the media globbing all over us for a few weeks until Frank Bush’s vanilla defense and our offensive slow starts tore us off the rails.

I think this year’s “statement game” will be at home vs Steelers. If we can send them packing in a stunning and complete game of ass whooping, the media will be back on the Texans big time.

One game at a time though, let’s knock the Colts into the basement first!

…that differentiates limit from no-limit and professionals from amateurs.
The professionals play some “iffy” stuff in no-limit because psychology and tendencies are SUCH a big part of it.
But if you are in a low-limit game, you are going to be playing call-machines and you’d better have a hand to ride through because you AREN’T chasing anyone out of a pot.

Barwin is going to be extremely important this year.

I hope he’s all right. He’s poised to have a breakout season as a rusher under Wade Phillips.

by WhiskeyR on Jul 31, 2011 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

hope so too.

everybody is going to have a breakout season.

Barwin looked GOOD last year pre-injury...

Looking forward to seeing what he can do if 100%

Here's to you getting another 1500 year under your belt Andre.
Andre Johnson confirmed that he’s “100 percent healthy and ready to go” after undergoing arthroscopic ankle surgery in January.
Johnson sustained the injury in Week 2, playing through pain the rest of the season. If not for three games missed due to the injury, Johnson would have become the first receiver in NFL history with three consecutive 1,500-yard seasons. He’s the No. 1 receiver in Rotoworld’s Draft Guide.

No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

One of the funniest things Terrence Toliver said to the media is that Matt Schaub & Leinart are more pro ready than LSU QBs. Uh, yes.

by TEXANSNUTT on Jul 31, 2011 2:15 PM CDT reply actions

Extends Tolliver's upside potential.

He never really had a qb that could get the ball to him in stride.

by chuckiepoo on Jul 31, 2011 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

tolliver will make team.

he got the arian foster treatment. which is okay with me cause he will be good.

by southpaw70 on Jul 31, 2011 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I watched some LSU games last season.

They literally were playing two Qb’s at the same time. Shuffling them in and out of the game in different situations.

Toliver’s biggest knock was his lack of numbers so we have gotten quite the steal with him because he’s got all the makings of a very good #2 WR maybe #1.

Did he really want to come here, or did he just want to get the hell out of Cincy ASAP knowing Houston was his best chance of escape?

We were kicking the Jets sideways last season

and would have beaten them with an average defense on our side.

I think we match up great against Pitt.

I am worried about NE though, especially with hoodie and his FA pickups.

The reality is Pittsburgh does not match up well against us

Questionable O line on their part and a balanced offensive attack on ours
