They're paid according to where they were chosen.
With very little negotiating room, for either party.
It's been asked already on PFT...
Anyone think fully-guarantee rookie contracts lead to fully-guaranteed vet contracts?
I hope not because in my opinion fully guaranteed contracts are a big part of why the NBA is about to get outsourced to Europe.

I think Andre's got it pretty easy with the offense in it's current state.
Besides it would take quite some time before Julio was at a point where he could legitimately take pressure off Andre.
We needed a JJ Watt though and he is going to contribute immediately.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
j/k... I'm with you, actually.
I’ve been watching this system turn unheralded prospects into productive offensive weapons for years. And not just here, in Houston.
I’m very confident in our WR corps. I would like to see a better mid range and deep ball out of Schaub this year… but then again, I’m sure we’ll have no trouble passing the ball all around the field like a doob.
We didn't really have a chance.
Unless you wanted to give up the ransom that Atlanta did. And I’m cool with not doing that.

So does anyone here have a clue how much cap room we have left.

I know we can go over the cap, by about 3 mil (I believe).
So there could end up being plenty of room, if we choose to go that direction.

can't argue with Franklin, if they decide to agree to it
But I think we’re actually looking set on the line. Watt/Mitchell/Smith are the projected starters.
Barwin and Mario play DE in nickel situations.
Damione Lewis is older, but should be a very competent NT/DT.
Shaun Cody can swingman from DE to DT; any spot on the line. Same with Antonio and Watt.
I’m wondering, could we save cap space, by cutting Antonio? Would we prefer an addition Ty Warren, or Franklin, to keeping Antonio Smith?
Besides some dumb penalties Smith has been good for us

By cutting Antonio though
We would be cutting the only lineman we have that has played in a 3-4 before. I think the experience situation there is bad enough without making it worse
"A threat is about a verb short of a win..." - TEXSON
of course, I was suggesting we cut Antonio to sign a 3-4 DL upgrade
I’m not sure how that makes us any worse.
I stand by my misstatement
"A threat is about a verb short of a win..." - TEXSON
I'd probably take Franklin, but he's not an end, he's a tackle.
Then who plays at end? Some position gets downgraded in either scenario. Warren I wouldn’t trade for Antonio, simply because the Pats (though not my favorite team) seem to have a knack for knowing when to get rid of players, and I’d question whether Warren would be an upgrade for us.
"A threat is about a verb short of a win..." - TEXSON
I think if we landed an all-world NT like Franklin...
Mitchell would end up playing DT in the Nickel sets only, plus plenty of rotational DE
True. Like I said, I'd take him.
I’ve already shot my wad though, so the thought of any further upgrades just makes me feel tired, no longer excited.

I wish we would have renegotiated Mario's contract
We could hve gotten both him and Foster locked up.
I know Mario is playing a new position and we have a glaring history of one year wonderbacks, but I’d rather assume that the worst-case scenario here is an Antonio Smith-esque “meh” performance with long term deals as opposed to losing either one of these guys in 2012 free agency.

Warren isn't a nose tackle.
He’d certainly be a nice back-up for both 3-4 DE positions, though.
He may be recovered from his hip injury, but
Im sure he’s not in football shape because of the amount of rest required for his injury. I think he would be a great mentor for JJ Watt and rotate in as necessary. I think we’ll carry 7 dlineman on the 53 and right now Watt, Smith, Mitchell, Cody and Bullman are the only real pros I see on the team. Still some moves to make…
"...you may all got hell, and I will go to Texas!"
-Davey Crockett
I forgot Lewis
he’s definitely better than Bullman and I think Jamison may have a chance too, but I don’t think he’s a good 3-4 fit
"...you may all got hell, and I will go to Texas!"
-Davey Crockett
I think we could use two big DE vets
i think there is a “sweet spot” for size of a 5 tech in a 3-4. Usually about 6-5 290-300. You don’t necessarily have to be as fast as a 4-3 end, but you have to be quick AND hold up against tackles and guards. Watt and Antonio are perfect for this and Lewis is good but a little old. Warren would be great if healthy. One player who was cut , but could be a good 3-4 de is jamaal Anderson of the falcons. He’s 6-6 290 and was miscast as a 4-3 end. I think he could step right in and play well for us. Basically if I had my wish i would sign these two players, and also re-sign Mark Anderson to back up Mario. That would finish up the moves on the defensive side of the ball.

at 6-5 300lbs I’ll take it.
and the clouds opened up and God said "I Hate you Texans Fans."
There are a lot of 300 pounders in this league.
And most of them aren’t cut out to play nose tackle.
If you have somebody like Ratliff on the roster, you make due and give him a shot at the position. But you certainly don’t go out of your way to spend a few million bucks and put a square peg in a round hole.
Warren is willing to take the Vet Min
as Rivers pointed out to me that “vet minimum is higher than younger mins. Still a decent commitment for a guy that might not add much.”

Now that Leach is gone...
Any chance we take a look at LeRon McClain. He’s a big bruising fullback similar to Leach and he was a pro bowler just a few years ago. Not sure how he would fit in the zone blocking scheme…but he might be worth taking a chance on
His price will be close to Vonta's.
Besides he wants to run the ball a lot (main reason he’s not a Raven right now) and we won’t do that with him when we have Tate, Ward, Foster.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.

Would love to see Brian Vickers here!!!
He was a beast at Colorado. Then had the unfortunate pleasure of being drafted by Cleveland where they didn’t use all of his talent
We don't
“need” to replace Vonta Leach, that is a common misconception, I think that Thor would do fine, of course it is a nice luxury if we find a vet that wants to come here though.
by Bobbythegreat on Jul 31, 2011 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions
If Casey doesn't work out we'll need someone who can play the position.
We may not “need” to RIGHT now sign a FB but I’m not going to assume 6-3 Casey will slide right into the lead blocker role and be effective.Having a guy who’s already played the position is important so he can step in and start if Casey doesn’t cut it.
And apparently the Texans offensive coaches feel the same.
No matter how bad it gets,I will believe. It's the only thing I have left for the Texans.
I think
the FO was putting in all efforts to retain Leach. Now that he was signed they know what they have to work with. I’m hoping we do a couple things today now that the rookies are signed and Vonta is off the market

Big middle finger to the browns, rumor is he hasn’t been happy in Cleveland. He is very good at the main thing Vonta was so good at. Hitting hard.

Our friends at Dawgs by Nature liked him
http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2011/5/7/2159970/cleveland-browns-free-agent-review-fb-lawrence-vickers
I’ll usually go for what fans of the team say over national reporters. They want him back
hmmmm well forget them
they heard we was about to hire him and they trying to say bad things about him.
like this one:
With Vickers at FB, Jamal Lewis twice ran for 1000, Harrison ran for 800+ in a handful of starts, and Hillis ran for 1000. Prior to Vickers we got one 1000 yard season from Droughns, and then you have to go all the way back to 1985 to find another thousand yard Browns rusher (Mack and Byner that year).
We’ve had 4 1000 yard rushers in the 25 years since Mack and Byner both eclipsed the mark, and three of them have had Vickers as a lead blocker.
Well, for example
Everyone in the national media thought Dunta was a “shutdown corner” except us. I always listen to the people who watch every game over media types who see them once in a few years and base their whole opinion off of that.
Yeah, that's why BRB is the best place to go to find the truth about Mr McNair's team

Came here to see what you guys were saying about Vickers and find myself quoted twice!
Vickers is indeed a beast of a fullback. Big and fast for a fullback, and one of those guys that is all in. 100% whistle to whistle.
What’s more, last year he had to take on a reduced role due to problems at Right Tackle (Jon St. Clair) and you never heard a single complaint. A consummate team player.
It was reported in 2009 that it was Vickers who finally bought in to Eric Mangini’s system and drug the rest of the offense with him. The Browns ended that year on a four game win streak in which Jerome Harrison (who? Exactly) ran for 900 yards behind Vickers with out any help from the passing game (31 completions in 4 games. No kidding).
Vickers would be a huge pick-up for you guys. I like the Texans a lot and would love to see him out in front of Arian Foster.

Harrison bitched and moaned after Hillis started getting all the carries. Traded to Eagles for Mike Bell. Don’t know if he’s cashed in since.

Probably not then
especially with the money they just threw at Nnamdi. Funny how Hillis was just a throw in on the trade for Brady Quinn. Absolute steal. Bet Denver regrets that now

Yes, but it’s not about to happen. Holmgren and Co. are cleaning house. Vickers made no secret of his respect and admiration for Mangini after Mangini was fired. Sealed his own fate.

Not necessarily.
I made this post in what I assume is a dead thread:
From our friends at the Bucs Nation SBN blog.
In summary (from what I understood), this season and next season the minimum salaries are league-wide rather than team-by-team. If the league as a whole fails to meet the 99% average threshold, it seems that the league itself will be forced to pay the difference to the players. As it stands now, there doesn’t seem to be any penalty to the teams if they’re under the floor until 2013.

Signing Vickers is probably more of an insurance policy than anything else. He adds so much more to this offense to be sent back to the bench. Even if he can’t block as well his catching ability makes him a threat.
