Texans Training Camp: Day One Recap

Is this a link dump? I'm not going to lie to you, Marge. So long.

-Lots of quotes from lots of Texans players and Gary Kubiak after the first practice this morning.

Star-divide

-Some Texans couldn't practice today under the terms of the new CBA. I imagine they were really broken up about not having to sprint around in the triple digit heat.

-With the departure of Vonta Leach, the spotlight turns to James Casey.

-A bunch of sound bites from the Texans during yesterday's media session, courtesy of Lance Zierlein.

Should be fixed.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Still not completely sold...

…on throwing all the chips in on Casey. I like him, but I’d still rather them bring in a more experienced FB.

If James Casey had demonstrated for an instant that he couldn't do it, I would join you in questioning him

He hasn’t done that. This is the changing of the guard. It happens all the time. One player moves on for whatever reason and another player takes his place. The machine keeps turning.

I understand people’s trepidation. Fine. Just sit back and watch. James Casey will do what he hast to do. If he can’t, I’m sure the coaches and FO will find a guy. I think we all know that Leach was a good player. But, he wasn’t perfect on every play. He wasn’t a constant difference maker in this offense. It’s a team game. This team won just 6 games last season.

James Casey will be just great!

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Probably the best option. We’ll likely know something about him tomorrow since they were in discussions today.

Wow

I love this guy. Please come to Houston we will welcome you with open arms. This guy is passionate about what he does. He loves blowing people up and takes pride in protecting his teammates along with being a great motivator and leader from the looks of things. I think this guy would be an awesome sign and would help us out alot. Get him here now.

Hey we signed Vonta and under Kubiak he became one of the best FB's in the league.

We could do the same with Vickers.

Exactly what we need

We need a guy like this that just loves destroying linebackers and anything else in his way. Leach was good at throwing everything he had at anything in front of him. Im hoping we do pick up a beast like this and just maybe, he could groom Casey into going beast mode as well.

I just thought FTJ's claims were hubris.

He doesn’t have any confidence in Casey. He hasn’t watched him in practice (as far as I know). He goes from saying he already knows what"s going to happen, then comes around to “why chance it”.

The coaching staff has been watching Casey play FB for two or three years. They know what’s what. If he starts, I don’t look at it as ‘taking chances’.

Oh well…

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Who's belittling who, here?...

Anyway, I like Vickers. I’d even prefer Vickers. But, yeah, the Texans running game will survive. Call it a ‘hunch’.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm confident that it will be effective enough to take us far in the playoffs.

I think you said something earlier about Leach’s lead blocking being responsible for Arian’s season. I put it more on a combination of things.

Aside from Leach’s punishing lead blocking, I’d also credit the line, the scheme, oh… and Arian’s talent and vision.

Anyhoo, you do realize that the Denver ZBS has a long track record for being effective, no matter who’s involved, right? And our personnel is very talented so… the sky isn’t falling, here. (In fact, I’ll bet you that we rush for more yardage this season, than we did last season!)

The running game will need to be consistently effective, in order for us to do damage in the playoffs, as well as to merely make it there.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Heard that!

My mind keeps going back to the few plays he was actually on the field and how few times he recieved the ball on a flair or in the flat. That’s just another dimension Thor will add to that 38%.

by chuckiepoo on Aug 2, 2011 1:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Vonta was excellent

But I fear we fans get caught being sentimental, at times. I’m certainly guilty of that myself.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

And I'm not directing that at FTJ

I’m quite positive that our staff greatly values the running attack. In fact, they value it enough to develop FBs in the wings, whereas some teams don’t even roster a single one.

I also believe we got too caught up in the jaw-dropping physicality that THCM brought. Blocking FB, in this system, is about preperation and technique, just as much as physicality. Maybe even more important.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:33 AM CDT up reply actions

ya

i disagree. foster will have a great yr im sure but not 1600 good. teams will game plan against him this yr more. casey maybe great but to me he’s a luxery like reggy bush is a luxery. thats not an insult. defenses have to really take reggy into account. reggys also not an every down back. he’s tight to get in space a couple times a game, but thats a luxery. same with casey. he’s nice to have if u have a bruisin fullback to go with him. he’s 6’3 and too thin in the hips to hit that A gap 10-15 times a game,16+ games a yr. hie body wont hold up. imho

by FU Nnamdi on Aug 2, 2011 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I meant the entire offense will rush for more yards.

Maybe not Foster, himself, per se.

And I base my prediction off the fact that we should have more leads, which could put us in more situations to eat clock.

But check the history of this scheme. There’s probably even room for growth…

In 2010 we were just getting started, in my eyes.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions

The more time I spend here the more respect I gain for this assortment of writers.

/backhanded chin wipe.
They may be wrong or have misplaced faith but they’re definitely peelin’ the onion and checking out the Texans from all sides, all the sparkles and all the warts.

by chuckiepoo on Aug 2, 2011 1:47 AM CDT up reply actions

And we normally don’t try to just stuff the RB into the A gap. We mostly pull the defense towards the sideline, often times cutting back in.

I’m not worried about THOR’s height/frame. I’d be more worried whether or not he has a grasp of the offense. Then again, he graduated from Rice, and has also been around this team long enough.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, if he does start...

I’m not sure he’ll blow up defenders and put them on their backs, as often as Leach would. Then again, as long as they’re blocked…

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 1:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree.

Although, running the ball is always the best way to tire a defense. It’s not merely a fullback doing that. It’s the entire offense.

Blockers are usually moving forward on running plays, which attacks defenders. As opposed to pass plays, where the blocking normally retreats, allowing the defenders to be on the attack.

Now, throw in the facts that we tend to pull; cut block defenders; and place emphasis on getting RBs who are physical -and I’d expect our running game to be highly physical. Vonta or no Vonta.

I will agree with your concerns about Casey staying healthy, though Leach is a bit older, and has already dealt with injuries over the past few seasons.

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2011 3:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I won't take the bet

I’m with you, CB. I think the rush O for the Texans is primed to surpass last season. My reasoning is the offensive line. They had a whole season of success last year and I think they will build on that. They had a few injuries, Brown was out on suspension, and they added a new guy, Wade Smith, and this season, they have every reason to improve having learned how to play together in this system. I think they will be as good or better this season. I think Arian will be as good or better. I think the D will be better and I think that leads into the rush O being more important in the ball control philosophy of winning football games. They go hand in hand. This should shape up to be a better rush O this season!

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on Aug 2, 2011 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

It was so incredible last season, that some folks just assume it will regress.

Then again, I believe that it was sort of an average rushing total overall, when compared with some of the Denver teams of Kubiak’s previous stint.

It’s not like we had the greatest rushing season of all time, and it’s not like we were just sitting on possesion much, just running the ball to close out games.

Casey is gonna be great…he has played as a back up fb for like 2 years now…he’s beefed up by like 20lbs (muscle)…will he be vonta? Hell no! No one will be, but will he be serviceable and work into elite…yes! And remember most of AF’s yards last year came outta single back…kubes said they will onfly use fb in about 10-15 snaps and of those he will prolly only block 70% the other 30% will be schemes to short passes after the run is developed!

Thor

I feel like he will be able to cause alot of mismatches out of the backfield. Motion him out, send him out to the flats. Defenses will have to account for him out of the backfield every play, unlike Leach, where teams could probably afford to ignore him from time to time…
