Good thing he was getting cut tonight. Will give Wade more coaching points and help his transition to OLB.

Just got back from the game

had to shift + A all the other threads.

Some observations while being there:

Adibi, Lestar Jean, Earl Mitchell and Darryl Sharpton played really well today. Sharpton always seemed to be in on a tackle. He’s a nice backup to have. Mitchell should be our starting NT. He looked great and had fantastic penetration. Adibi is a nice backup and Jean set up the game winning TD.

McCain played decent but I was annoyed the entire time with him because he would not turn his head to locate the ball. That could of been terrible because it obviously leads to pass interference calls. I felt he lucked out on several plays. McManis was very active.

Overall the D looked very good. Offense just had rust and Shaub overthrew some players. I’m not worried as this is a good offensive unit, though I bet josh innes will be tearing apart the offense on sportsradio 610 tomorrow and panicing…

I think he's more than fodder

Kubiak has been really impressed with him in practice, and now with him playing pretty well in real game action I think he has a good chance to make the team, assuming he can keep it up.

Also, I think he said in an interview with LZ that he was around 247 at his pro day, which means he should be able to put on some more weight if the coaches ask him to.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Aug 16, 2011 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Look who's ahead of him

Mario, Reed, Barwin, Nading, Dobbins… He could feasibly beat out the last two, but he has practice squad eligibility and they don’t; while only two of the above will start.

I’d say it’s a 90% chance that he lands on the practice squad to start the season. 5% he doesn’t make the team, and 5% he makes the 53 man roster. They CAN bring him off the practice squad if a player is injured… I think BOTH he and Cheta will end up on the practice squad, barring an injury to a front line player.

It’s simply a matter of how he will ride the bench behind the top three guys… Will it be on the 53 man or the practice squad? The latter allows them to carry an extra guy going into the season.

Don’t let logic interrupt your hyperbole.

Problem with that is if he performs really well the last three preseason games & he gets put on the practice squad

Overall good showing.

However, the injuries were tough to watch.

I think the defense looked much better.

Good:
Watt
Mitchell
Nading lol
Braman
Jean
Yates
Ogbunnaya (scrabble south)

Not so good:
Mario
Reed
Schaub (couple overthrown balls)
O-line (we never really controlled the line of scrimmage)

But it’s preseason so other than getting reps, not too much to take away.

Special teams was an extreme low for me tonight.

No one stepped up as a returner. We weren’t blocking well and had some bad penalties. Punting was nicer though.

by Bobbythegreat on Aug 16, 2011 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Quinton Demps is a back up safety so I'm not sure his making this team is dependent on his return skills.

I think Jacoby is still the guy but no reason risking him getting hurt returning punts. Hopefully somebody else will step up because it’s obvious Jacoby is focusing more on WR.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Rusty and other observations

I would expect to see rust on the offensive side of the ball, but there is no excuse for the poor performance on special teams. The return guys (Townsel and Will Demps as Paul Kurhasky calls him) were putrid…. just running scared. Not a single touchback??? If you’ve been paying attention to the other games you’ll notice that most teams are kicking it out of the end zone. And with out coverage “skills” this is going to be a liability.

Tackling in general was terrible. Too many missed tackles again and again and again.

Demeco is a step behind. Our OLB’s look awesome early on but ILB’s may be our Achille’s Heel (no pun intended).

Braman or Reed will be starting over Barwin.

He didn’t really get into the game until late in the 3rd. Didn’t get thrown at once. Managed to be around the ball and tally up a handful of tackles. 4 to be precise…

Best shot of the game was Phillips smiling as the defense was making plays. He looks a hell of a lot better wearing that Texans gear than those hobo clothes he wore last year.

Can we get some dead horse gifs in here please?

We should all expect minimal and negative coverage from ESPN, especially when playing the Jets.

Last year after our comeback against the redskins, the media was on our knobs so hard it’d make Tom Brady blush.

We gotta earn some media respect and with the question marks we have going into this season and how the media has been burned by making us a darkhorse pick the past three years, don’t expect it to come before we win some real games against tough opponents.

by WhiskeyR on Aug 16, 2011 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

My main thing...

is that I hate that both of the front page stories on ESPN are from ESPNNY… and they talk about how the Jets fell because of their ineptness, not because the Texans defense looked any kind of decent. I don’t think I read anything about 7 sacks given up.

Not asking for a trophy from BSPN, just a H/T at least…

by Bennyscrap on Aug 16, 2011 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

here's my take.

last season, our offense started off shitty, and what would happen is our defense would be so GOD awful by the end of the first quarter we would be playing from behind. while i would love if our offense played well 4 quarters, the system isn’t perfect and for whatever reason just like an old car it takes a minute for it to “run good.” i accept that. the difference between previous years and THIS year (it seems) is that our defense will KEEP US IN THE GAME.. therefore giving the offense more time to get their shit together.

Not wqorried about our satrt last night.

The Jets have one of the best defenses in the NFL which is hard for a rusty offense to start fast against. That and we were short handed on offense without Andre and Foster.

Plus there were two missed opportunities on first string offense we didn’t convert.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

also, offense requires a lot of timing and practice

My sideline report from Reliant (now that I've had a night to sleep on it)

It was great to be back at Reliant, even for a pre-season game. Football is back!!

Outstanding Performances (from any unit):
Watt – This guy is the real deal and by far the best drafted player for us since ‘Dre
Manning – Houston, we have an NFL safety! Awesome tackler, sticky in coverage, natural leader.
Nading – Absolute beast mode last night!
Sharpton – Was powerful and on or near the ball carrier in every play
Braman – Looked like a 3rd year starter instead of a rookie
Adibi – Sensational, instinctive, and powerful
McCain – It may not have shown on TV, but he was covering great. Tackling was questionable, but he did enough and was a play maker. His closure speed is incredible.
Brooks Reed – Tons of power and raw skills, but was off a step or two in reaction time
Ogbonnaya – The sole remaining healthy RB did a solid job
Dickerson – Looks great on routes and blocking, he’s come a long way

Not enough material to really grade any other players, especially on offense 1st team. I’m concerned about Mario adjusting to his new role, but Wade can fix it. Daniels, Dickerson, Walter and Jacoby Jones all looked great on routes and blocking. Lestar Jean and Derrick Townsel showed great promise.

Unit Performance:

1st Team Offense – WTF Schaub?!! These guys better get their shit together and come out ready to play. We’re not going to tolerate another season of slow starts and sloppy play. Very disappointing. Doesn’t matter if ’Dre and Foster were out. Schaub looked horrible. Please tell me we are not going to regress on offense now that we fixed the defense! Sure it is pre-season vanilla against a legit Rex Ryan starting defense, but I was not impressed with the lack of accuracy in throwing or play calling.

1st Team Defense – Again the offense didn’t help them any with field position or getting a breather during nice long clock consuming drives, but overall they held the 1st team Jets offense to a field goal. The pressure looks outstanding! The secondary coverage was good, even missing Joseph in the line up. Wade’s system is legit and already a massive upgrade.

“Special Teams:” Holy Crap!!! How does Marciano still have a job?!! OK, it’s too early for that just yet. Granted there are a lot of different folks in the mix, but I’m not satisfied with this at all. They are by far the biggest liability we have at this point.

2nd/3rd Team Offense: Leinart iooks great! I’m disappointed we didn’t stretch the field more to test his arm, but the short/mid accuracy was solid. We may not have a QB controversy, but Schaub better get his shit together or I could see a challenge coming. The second string receivers all have good height and speed, but ball skills were lacking too much. Yates looks real damn good for a rookie in his first NFL competition.

2nd/3rd Team Defense: What stood out was how Wade’s system really brings pressure, and also doesn’t allow big plays. Everyone was scrapping good and there were coverage sacks! It was fantastic to watch, and I’m very happy that we finally have a real DC running that side of the ball.

The quick list of individual performances and observations:

I hope to see more this Saturday when we host the Saints.

good receivers can turn a poor throw into a circus stunt for success

but Schaub was very off target and his timing looked bad. Thankfully that can get cleaned up with more reps, but it was not impressive.

by MeMongo on Aug 16, 2011 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Watched on TV

Couldn’t really see how Dickerson did, but if he was running routes well how come he only got 1 or 2 targets and no catches? The pass to OD didn’t look catchable to me by receivers not named Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. The one to Walter looked like he should have brought it in with both hands.

Would like to see Leinart throw the ball farther down the field also, but Ogbonnaya was simply way too open to bother risking throwing down the field.
