Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

@JimIrsay
We have agreed to terms with Kerry Collins...more details to come

I'll go ahead and file this one under "evidence suggesting Peyton Manning will not be ready for Week 1." Discuss.

(h/t DisplacedTexan)

Rivers edit: More evidence:

@mortreport reporting Colts' braintrust does not believe Peyton Manning will be ready for regular-season opener in Houston. Manning hopeful.

For some reason, I was hoping Manning was going to play

And on the first play of the game, he would get sacked and injure his neck. Season ending injury. Oh well….

I'm not one for wishing injury on a player...

even if it is Manning. But I don’t think he needs to be out the whole season for them to look “mortal”, as I’ve seen many say. With his fragile neck, I don’t think they’re gonna be the same all season

Yeah I'm not a person who wishes for injury to a player

It’s just that I saw that happening for some weird reason.

by Tony Ung on Aug 24, 2011 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Meh

I think the competitive side of me wants him to play because I feel that it would test how well we are going to come along. Can’t be the best without playing of the best and it would cement that if we beat the Colts with Manning. The other side of me is just tired of seeing the Colts win the division year in and year out and wants to see a new division champion.

by Tony Ung on Aug 24, 2011 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

LOL

Yeah but us beating the Colts with manning is more for my sake, not the media’s. I already know the media doesn’t cover us so I don’t care what they think nowadays. It’s a sense of competition that I’m interested in.

Instead of going up against a pathetic QB in Curtis Painter, we have to face a guy who has had some pretty good games against us in the past.

When we had a dreadful defense,

The Colts’ offensive line isn’t nearly as good as the Traitors lines he stood behind in the past, and he has a tendency to get rid of passes at the first sign of pressure. That’s not to mention his arm is basically gone from what I hear. I think if he starts (which I’m not entirely sold on yet), he’ll be a far worse quarterback than we’ve seen in past games against him.

by chrisd21 on Aug 24, 2011 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's the thing:

The Colts’ offense is predicated on having an amazing QB with a preternatural ability to read defenses, adjust plays at the line of scrimmage, and deliver perfect throw after perfect throw. Generally, three plays are called in to Manning, who then sees what the D is doing and picks the one that will work best. That is not something that Collins has done or will be able to pick up on the fly.

Nor can Collins throw 95% of the time and survive without a running game. And I seriously doubt he’ll get rid of the ball as well as Peyton does to avoid sacks.

by MDC on Aug 24, 2011 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

That Vegas moved the line on both Texans and Jags wins. Evidently they were both increased. Wonder if this is recognition that Peyton may not make a full season?

Caveat: Have not fact checked the story, so might be much ado about nothing. But if it moved, this seems to militate in favor of #18 riding the pine week 1.

You guys are missing the secret Colts strategy

Just wait until they get a backup from the Glitter Kitties. Then you will begin to see their evil genius. How will they use this? Only P8n can figure it out. That or they figure a way to meld all the backups into one player.

Will P8n play first game? No way to know – but I can enjoy the irony of the Colts un-retiring Collins. Makes you wonder if Favre turned them down.

I think if Karma plays anything – we should find ways to miraculously win about 8 games this year.

all logic is suspended

You know since last season that Collins hasn’t been training for touch football, let alone NFL football. And, we know QBing an NFL team is both mental and physical. I can see him gearing his mind up to do it. I can see it. But, once those hits and pressures start coming, and you know they will, how can anyone say that he will not just wilt and beg out of the whole situation? Mario, JJ, Antonio, Brooks, Connor, and for that matter, Xavier are only thinking about reminding him what it takes to man that position. They will be laying the wood. The play ends when they say it ends. Imagine that hit Brooks Reed put on, who was it, Chase Daniel? If Collins gets any of that! He won’t be getting up and sprinting back to the huddle! If he does, I’m sure someone will remind him and do it again….hahahahahaha!

Some notable quotes after today's practice

Danieal Manning (on what happened with the touchdown pass in last week’s game) "Bad adjustment on a call that I made. I was thinking one coverage. I put us in one coverage and the rest of the guys were playing another coverage, so it was busted on my part. I was actually trying to run under a route and he ran a double move. We should have been in a different coverage, so I could play over the top instead of underneath."

Gary Kubiak (on CB Johnathan Joseph) "He’s looked good. He’s looked real good. We kept him off the turf, so he’s got a good hour and 20 minutes every day and he’s ready to play."

Kubiak; (on if he still expects WR Jacoby Jones to contribute on special teams) "Oh yeah, he’ll definitely be our punt returns and (FS) Danieal (Manning) will be our kick returner. It’s time for him to have some of those returns. He’s had some in the past and it’s time for him to get back on the top of his game."

(on what CB Johnathan Joseph will bring to the team) "Johnathan will bring the confidence that we need in our corner. If they play one-on-one, we can lock a guy down and guys can focus on other things on the field. We can take him and put him on one of their best receivers and the rest of the game all the other guys can do what we’ve got to do. Defending Mario

The criticism of Mario Williams in his transition to outside linebacker has officially reached epidemic levels. There are some fans clamoring for a Williams trade to Philadelphia for cornerback Asante Samuel.

Those fans have been unhappy with what they’ve seen from Williams at his new position, even if the actual amount of work the former defensive end has had this preseason amounts to less than three quarters.

by MeMongo on Aug 24, 2011 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Hurr?

Asante Samuel is a very good player at a premier position signed to a fairly reasonable contract through 2013. Mario is a very good player who is switching positions and going into a contract year.

I’m excited to see what he can do, but that wouldn’t be a completely lopsided deal. Not to mention, I’m not sure what Philly would want with that deal, what with Cole and Babin on the outside already…

Asante is a "decent" corner

but he’s 30 years old from the 2003 draft (fourth round) and far from being anywhere near equal in value.

Mario is worth far more than Asante either as LB or DE. He’s a 1st overall pick from 2006 and has produced very well as an All Pro DE. We’re not trading him for a corner who’s on his last couple of years of production.

Let’s put some faith into a coach with 35 years experience and designed a defense that has proven to produce everywhere he’s been. I’m sure he’ll put Mario in a position to dominate in this defense.

by MeMongo on Aug 25, 2011 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Taking this into further review

I wouldn’t trade Mario for Revis or Scrabble either.

by MeMongo on Aug 25, 2011 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

"Decent" is an understatement.

He’s been “good” for most of his career, with a couple “exceptional” years mixed in. I’m not all that concerned about his age, either. Odds are, he’ll be a good CB until his contract expires (when he’s 33).

As I mentioned though, it’s really a question of depth and contract status. Brooks Reed has been surprisingly good, and I even like what I’ve seen from Barwin. Jackson and Allen, meanwhile, continue to disappoint. If Mario were to go down with an injury this very week, CB2 would still probably be our biggest hole.

I’m not advocating it; I’m simply playing devil’s advocate to those who dismissed it without a second thought. I’m excited as anybody to see Mario climb back into double digits in the sack column.

by Nashmeister on Aug 25, 2011 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...

I’ve heard some knuckleheads on talk radio espousing this very thing. Stupid is as stupid does.

by USMC_JA on Aug 24, 2011 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

All over the place

Do you listen to sports radio 610 or 790? Everyone EVERYONE (callers) think Mario is failed experiment and we should trade him immediately.

McClain is 100% right. He’s improving, he will be fine.

by WhiskeyR on Aug 24, 2011 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

No hyperbole

I hope every single person who calls in and says that develops a painful, but benign, tumor in their rectum.

by MDC on Aug 24, 2011 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I primarily bounce back and forth...

between 610 and 790. I used to frequent 1560 in the AM, but as much as I love Grenado, LZ was the man. Since he left, I don’t spend much time at 1560. Nevertheless, MDC has the right of it. Those individuals calling for a Mario trade are imbeciles. I suspect most of them are nothing more than bitter VY fanboys with whom Mario will never have a fair chance.

1560 sort of annoys me since it became a Yahoo deal...

LZ was indeed the man. And the Yahoo thing just means I have to listen to more fantasy football gibberish, which I could really do without.

by Nashmeister on Aug 25, 2011 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions

That's why I don't listen to radio

Load of shit.

The difference between Mario against the Jets and against the Saints was remarkable….the guy will get there. I’ve no doubts about it.

Do we actually have fans that are this football impaired (IE...Stupid)

Why would we trade one of the best defensive linemen in the league? Just to have him play against us later and cause heart ache & discontent? Do we really want Schaub sacked by Mario? As stated before he averages a sack once every 2 games. From the games I have seen he has been disruptive even though he has been double teamed often. Give Mario a full season at this position before you say it is a failed experiment. Some people expect instant greatness out of Mario at OLB. The just need to give him time.

Cheers & Semper Fi

Our football, who art in Houston, Texans be thy name. Thy wins will come, this will be done at Reliant and on the road. Give us this year our winning season, and forgive us for our penalties, as we forgive those who false start against us. And lead us not into overtime but deliver us a Superbowl !! ~TheNightOwl

Agree

Mario only needs a fair chance to succeed. I, for one, believe Wade knows more about designing a Defense than all those “ridiculous-trade-guy” callers combined. They simple know not, of what they speak.

BTW!

I watched the entire last game with a VY fanboi who, throughout the game, insisted VY was the better choice AND a better QB than Schaub. He also called Mario one of the worst first overalls in history.

I flat out told him: “You are clinically insane if you still believe that rubbish.”

I knew a guy who broke his hand punching the wall when he heard that the Texans drafted Mario. I was like “Yeah, it sucks that they passed on Bush”, but he was freaking out because they didn’t take Vince Young 1st overall. In his mind, it was a foregone conclusion. Vince Young Fanboyitis is debilitating…

I think we all realize that Mario was the right choice, but those touched with the VY Consumption are beyond help.

so I will repeat it

By game 4 – 4 sacks and 1 int.

People forget he averaged a sack every other game last year. He hasn’t even played a whole games worth in the pre-season.

will the rest of the preseason games be in terrible quality? and will it continue into the regular season? I just saw highlights from different games including Hou vs NO and it’s obviously so much worse than it should be.

Why channel 13 is not using HD

I don’t know

It’s kind of pathetic they couldn’t even get the resolution right on widescreen. I tried adjusted my TV’s aspect ratio, and the mistake was on their part bc their broadcast had a huge chink of the right side(which included the clock) cut-off.
