Mario's Contract situation
So, I saw AJ and LZ discussed the most recent contract restructurings and what they mean towards Mario. Namely, the Texans are waiting to how he does in the new D and how he is heaklth wise before extending him to a new huge contract. I pretty much agree with the strategy, but one question: with the new rules, is Mario unrestricted after this season? Not sure I see us holding onto him at all if it's a bidding war situation.

We can franchise him
As I said in the other thread, I would not be surprised if they asked Mario if he’s like to do an extension/restructure and he said no. He may be poised for a career year and would potentially be leaving money on the table.
I don't think his value would be any higher if he had a career year right now.
Lamarr Woodley has been a top-five, maybe even top-three OLB in this league for a few years now, and he just got $12 million per year. Charles Johnson had one great year at DE, and he just got the same amount (and for an extra year). Regardless of how he performs at OLB, we’re going to have to pay Mario top-dollar if he hits the open market because of his success at DE. There’s really no incentive for anybody in this situation to agree to a long-term deal, except maybe Mario for injury-insurance.
He should be an UFA after this year
Since he would have 5 accrued seasons. I think they will franchise him.
I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.
Ah, the franchise
Wasn’t sure if that was still part of the CBA. Good to know we have options. Thanks.
