Post Game Thread: Texans 23, Dolphins 13

I s'pose it wouldn't be a Texans game if there weren't moments that make you consider stabbing your family to death so that you can get the death penalty and not have to watch the team anymore.

Comment here with your thoughts on the awesomeness that is 2-0, the fact that Kareem Jackson was arguably the best CB for Houston today, or paeans to Andre Johnson.

I am happy we won

The defense was not perfect

but in reality, better than the Pats – and made plays when needed

Mario Williams will have 4 sacks and 1 int by Game 4 of the regular season.

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 18, 2011 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

The Dolphins are a good team. Let's give them credit, but let's give the Texans credit, too

JJ Watt made some big plays. Antonio Smith at the right time made a huge play. Mario Williams, made some huge plays! Sure, they weren’t perfect, especially up the middle, and I’m sure we’ll here more about that from our illustrious BRB writers. But, I’m not fussy. When the Texans win, that’s a W and I will say, they deserved this hard fought W.

Scary

Not only did the defense come up big and win this game for us, I even THOUGHT they would. I don’t know how to react.

LVPs: Jason Allen and Eric Winston. Allen was beyond awful all game, and Winston collected three holds, two on big plays.

MVPs: Antonio Smith, JJ Watt, and Mario “Let’s trade him for a 7th round pick” Williams.

Oh, and that guy named Andre Johnson, and Ben Tate was freaking clutch.

KJax played his best game as a pro, too.

I've watched a little bit of it on replay (already?)...

And it’s not as bad as it looked live. At least, so far. Thomas did the bulk of his damage on delayed hand-offs against our nickel-front. I think he had a 14-yarder and a 13-yarder running right in between Watt and Smith on the touchdown drive.

I think you’ll also be pleasantly surprised by the amount of double-teams that both of our DTs commanded.

This is why we really will work better as a team that plays with the lead.

Even with an upgrade at NT, Wade’s 3-4 tends to be weak up the middle. And since Demeco is not his old self it kind of magnifies the problem.

To me

Jackson stepped up in run support a couple times, including forcing the fumble. He had an excellent stop of Thomas, I believe, on one run.

He gave up a couple passes, but his coverage couldn’t have been much better. And he was in on two plays where his coverage was tight enough to cause “aimed” throws leading to incompletions (Hartline miss is one).

Coverage? Not so much. Clearly he is an improved player this year. I hope he is an improvING player, and his coverage continues to improve.

by USMC_JA on Sep 18, 2011 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Jackson was better...

than last year. And allen was absolutely terrible and deserved to be drove 5 yards onto his ass in the endzone playing that forbidden 10 yard pre snap cushion that QB’s begin orgasming to when they line up under center. I wouldnt even bother dropping back. I would see my CB 10 yards back and audible a quick hitch route or even better a quick slant inside. (See Brice Mccain vs. Roy Williams last year). Amazing how the strength of our offensive line can turn into the weakness over the course of two years.

Something else was going on during that game, though. There was constantly a linebacker slipping through the middle of the line, and I’m not sure if it was a result of missed blocks or poor pre-snap anticipation.

YMMV. When we got pressure, it was happy time. Allen playing off Marshall by 25 yards or whatever certainly didn’t help, either.

When he left Allen played off Marsahll letting henne throw easy quick passes.

Half of his 12 completions went to Marshall. Momentum witch IMO when they took Bush out and ran the ball with that rookie RB.

Marshall was owning him...

But is it just me or did Chad Henne look pretty damn good tonight? Yeah, he missed some receptions that he should have had, but he made some tough throws and put the ball right on the money. Happily we held him under 200 after he tossed over 400 last week against NE, but it seems to me that he’s a pretty decent QB.

Normally I'd gripe about his red-zone performance...

But all I saw this week was great coverage and pass-rush by Miami. Our play-calls were trumped, and there ain’t much you can do about that. Props to the entire team for grinding one out.

by Nashmeister on Sep 18, 2011 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Its a good thing we have a stable of running backs

because we don’t win this game without a running game. The pass protection for Schaub was pretty terrible. The defense looked bad most of the game to me, the difference being making a big play when we needed it. They couldn’t stop the run at all, and they were so used to running down the field after running backs, that when the Dolphins passed, there was no pressure at all. And does anyone else still want to sing Jason Allen’s praises? He got absolutely face stomped by Brandon Marshall repeatedly. On a good note, they didn’t make the late game mistakes they would have last year and found a way to win. Thats improvement.

So anyone during the 3rd qtr start regretting talking all that shit to Dolphin’s fans all week?

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

The Texans were actually clutch last year...

but they always came out slow so they were playing from behind. Yes, the fucked it up in the 4th a few times, but when you’re constantly under pressure playing catch-up, that’s going to happen. Overall I would say this team can put points on the board in the crunch.

by Peckerwood on Sep 19, 2011 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Encouraged by the pass defense.

Henne threw 30 passes with only 12 completions. 6 of those went to Marshall mostly on little hitches when Allen had to cover him.

Obviously the run defense is still lacking. NT position just isn’t getting git done.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Sep 18, 2011 6:39 PM CDT reply actions

Shit and 6 of those passes were blocked...

Henne didn’t play nearly as badly as the stat sheet says he did. The Texans made some plays today. Sucked overall Defensively, but luck was on their side today. And yes, I do say “luck”. The blocked field goal was lucky, the missed field goal was lucky, hell, even the forced fumble by Jackson was lucky. If he doesn’t hit it just SO when the guy’s grip loosened for a millisecond, the ball doesn’t come out. And yes, I know, the practice over and over and over stripping balls and such, but it requires a good deal of luck, timing, and misfortune to actually happen. Therefore I label it all as LUCK. Because you can’t count on it happening game in and game out.

by Peckerwood on Sep 19, 2011 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

We definitely got lucky

Hell, recovering a fumble is pure luck. But the Dolphins had a bit of luck too, and at the end of the day I’d say the best team won.

If you win by more than seven

It’s very hard to say that luck is a factor. It’s game decided by seven points or less that are largely influenced by luck.

Solution: win by more than seven every time out.

Unsung hero of this game was Brett Hartmann.

Consistently gave the Dolphins bad field position, whether it was on kickoffs or by punting.

Check this stat out: He had 6 punts for 288 yards, a 48 yard per punt average. That is sick.

Also placed two punts inside the 20.

Very happy that we kept him over Maynard.

We won, but I felt sick

Wow- that was not a pretty win. I guess it was a W, but wow.

I thought the D looked pretty soft in the 3rd quarter.

And it didn’t seem like the offense was particularly smooth.

Glover was great. I actually thought K-Jax was better than Allen. After he gave up the TD, notice how Allen closed up and only played about 5 yards off of Marshall, and he also got help from Manning (yay Manning!). Allen was so bad they put extra tape on JJo and had him go back in. And a wounded JJo is better than Allen.

Mario is awesome at OLB.

Winston was horrible.

Cody was useless. I noticed a change when Mitchell was in the game. I hope Wade noticed.

Sux for Foster. Ben is a smash mouth back, but not the slasher that AF is. I hope he heals.

Why do we still have Slaton? We need to trade for another cover corner.

If we aren’t careful, Brees and Co will rape us next week.

The offensive was surprisingly ineffective for large stretches in the second and third quarter. And we need to do a better job with red zone TDs, rather than settling for FGs.

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 18, 2011 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

except for Jason Allen and Cody, the whole defense (including the ILB's) played great

few notes-

1) Jonathan Joseph is extremely important to this defense…when he went out, the dolphins built on momentum and no one could take Joseph one on one…the play that Joseph came bac in, was the play Kareem forced the fumble…that shows just how important it is to this defense knowing they have him out there

2) WHY IS BRANDON HARRIS NOT PLAYING?! he was looking good in the preseason and we need him out there

3)Winston was absolutely terrible…if he keeps playing like this, we’re going to need to grab a tackle at the 32nd pick next year

4) To everyone saying that when Jason taylor jumped the bootleg that it completely threw our offense off, well it shouldnt have because when we run that bootleg, we also run the ball off that and its supposed to throw the defense off when they try to go after the QB and open cutback lanes so we should have kept going after them with the same gameplan

5) Glover Quin (among others) took a huge step forward today

6) We need to be better in the redzone and our offense could’ve been alot better today, but I’m not too worried yet

7) And last but not least, GET RID OF SHAUN CODY!

by Samarth Sulhan on Sep 18, 2011 7:30 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

Brandon Harris is a rookie. His time will come.

The only guy that really burned the Texans was Marshall. Fasano was shut out. Bess made only one play and that was early in the game. Hartline was also a non factor.

by Ethan Matz on Sep 18, 2011 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i know his time will come

but I dont think we have the depth at cb (like, for instance tramon williams and green bay) to sit him out and let him get better off the field

i would like for us to put him in their and let him compete with McCain for the 3rd corner spot, but then again Wade knows what he’s doing…

I don't think he's better than any of the guys ahead of him. McManis is still ahead of him.

Great Game!!

the d played great we are soft in the run game but the secondary played well I thought. Miami is gonna win some games this year they do have a really good defense. I was getting nervous there for a while but the texans made plays when they needed too and the defense came through. The refs were horrible in this game. The offense played well by not turning the ball over and our d was creating turnovers.

I bought it as a backup for when the jackasses at the CBS affiliate in Austin lose their minds again… and you KNOW they will.

this is how I have resorted to watching the games

The worst part is avoiding my phone/computer/tv until 11pm on Sunday night so I can still watch the game unspoiled.

Was it just me, or

Did FOUTS sound like he was the home announcer on a Miami preseason game? I never complain about announcers, but he couldn’t say enough about the phins in the 2nd half.

meaningful football games in '08...MAKE THAT 09, okay 10, definitely 10..i am an excellent driver...2011 = defense > awful.

Good news, everyone.

We get Dan Dierdorf again next week!

…wait, that’s not good news at all.

Sloppy win, but I'll take it

Cushing looked very good to me today. He will continue to get even better.
JJ keeps doing his thing.
Conner showed up today with a sack. Antonio had one again…Nice
Thor, Where was he? Didnt have the monster blocks like last Sunday. He looked hesitant. Those shots he gave last week took a toll on him. Eric screwed him on one play
Defense with the bend dont break game. Last year we would have lost this game cause of the D.
Kjax played well today. He was laying some wood
The only ones that can stop our offense, is our offense.

Time for Big Time games coming up…

My attitude is like a virgin......I dont give a fuck!

by The Abrego on Sep 18, 2011 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

Cushing didn’t look bad. At least better than last week. He was good at plugging up the middle to stop the run past Cody.

and the more I think about it, the more I agree that we would have lost that game last year. The Phin’s last drive would have scored and completely collapsed us (ala Jets or Jags).

and I’m still confused about Conner dropping back in coverage.

hey hey hey

2-0 feels great! We have some tough games coming up though! How was Mario today? Man, the play-by-play on nfl.com just isn’t good enough!!!

Mario had a good game

He hit Henne’s arm right as he was throwing to cause a Joseph INT inside their 20.

I don’t remember anything like that happening last year…

Also would have gotten Smith's sack if Smith hadn't gotten there first.

KJ was awesome

but that dude standing in for JJ was crap.

Overall the game had me nervous as hell. It felt like Miami had the upper hand at scrimmage in both Q2 and Q3, only their botched FG’s saved us from them really smelling blood. Also penalties fucked us over. In short I was pretty sure we’d loose midway through Q3. But these Texans are different it seems. Also Run Defence was not so good, we were just one guy away from being blown out sooo many times.

Yes, thankfully Manning & Quin are better at tackling than the two guys we had back there last season

Those two need to hold a tackling seminar with the rest of the defense. Also we need an upgrade at NT ASAP

Thank you, Texans!

It could have been a rather disastrous Sunday after the abomination that was Manchester vs Chelsea. The 3rd quarter introduced the all too familiar lump in throat but guys stepped up. Well done.
