BRB: Transactions Open Thread

Dorin Dickerson tweeted that he's been released.  Damione Lewis joins him looking for work.  Talk about transactions here (there's a chance we could be signing people, as well, especially on the OL).

Speculation.

Cut Lewis and sign a younger DE that gets cut from some other team.

Hearing that other DE might be Igor from the Cowboys. That rumor has been going around for awhile and he is a former player for Wade.

hmmm

I dont see how Holliday is eligible considering he spend all of last year on the IR.

Players can’t have an accrued season of NFL experience (six or more games on a team’s 53-man roster, injured reserve or PUP list)

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on Sep 2, 2011 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

PS rules are hard to figure out.
To makes things easier to explain, players who are eligible for the practice squad:

Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster);

Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games; and,

Have been on the practice squad with a particular team no more than 2 prior seasons unless the team never had their active roster go below 53 players during the two years the player served on the practice squad. If that is the case, the player is eligible for a third practice squad season.

This is where it gets a bit confusing. A player with an accrued NFL season (6 or more games) isn’t eligible for the practice squad but a player who played in fewer than 9 games is still eligible? Yeah, it’s a bit confusing.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Sep 2, 2011 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 2, 2011 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

you dont have to go on the field

Truthfully, here's my thought on the final roster

QB – Schaub, Leinart, Yates
RB – Foster, Ward, Tate, Ogbonnaya
FB – Casey, Vickers
WR – A. Johnson, Walter, Jones, B. Johnson, Holliday
OL – Myers, Brown, W. Smith, Winston, Brisiel, Caldwell, Butler, Wallace
TE – Daniels, Dreessen, Graham

P – Maynard
K – Rackers
LS – Weeks

DL – Watt, A. Smith, Cody, Mitchell, Bulman, Jamison (plus one NT to be added from waivers)
OLB – Williams, Barwin, Nading, Reed
ILB – Ryans, Cushing, Sharpton, Adibi
CB – Joseph, Jackson, Allen, Harris, McCain, McManis
S – Manning, Quin, Nolan Barber

PS – Keo, Cheta, Braman, Newton, Maehl, Miller, Toliver, Pemberton
IR – Darling, Jean, S. Smith, Studdard, Carmichael

Now I say Ogbonnaya makes the roster strictly as an insurance policy in case injuries mount up again at RB. He’ll probably be inactive otherwise. Holliday makes the team, but just barely. I think Kubiak will have him as another KR/PR option so as not to wear out Manning or Jacoby (especially now that Dickerson’s been cut). I don’t think Dobbins makes the cut, Adibi beat him out, but Dobbins will be on speed dial if we have an injury at ILB.

One?

Ogbonnaya looked good throughout the preseason.

Average per carry was only 3.6 or 3.7, but he was versatile. First game he showed he can consistently catch the ball.

Don’t understand why you keep Slaton. He didn’t even play for christ’s sake.

I don't think they'll keep 4....nor do I really want 4....

but Ogbonnaya never really ran with the 1s. That’s both good for him (I’ll excuse his pitiful offensive line play bringing him down) but bad as well (hard to tell if he’d be effective against 1s as he was against 2s, 3s, and 4s).

He was ineffective in 2009 yes

He averaged 4.9 yac in his limited carries last year. He was injured one season, and has a minor preseason injury just like Foster and Ward did. I still hold that the 3 injuries on the offensive line in 2009 were more to blame than Slaton himself for our running game. I think he can still be effective in the league and he is more talented than any #3 back in the league which is why he will be claimed instantly if he is waived. I dont think we will carry 4 RBs, but I would bet my left nut if we do Slaton is the 4th.

Chris was cut from a Rams team that had absolutely nothing behind Steven Jackson. He had more opportunity there than just about anywhere and he wasnt good enough. Hell they had to go get 2 new FA backup RBs because he wasnt good enough. Chris was never anything more than camp fodder.

He was a 7th round pick they placed on the Practice Squad

We signed him to our practice squad the next season. I have no illusions that he can be a great RB, or even a good one at that, but if we carry 4 RBs, I’d rather have Ogbonnaya be that #4 cause it’s a case of “what have you done for me lately?”, & in Slaton’s case, it’s nothing

and injury as far as the team is saying he is fully recovered from

Chris Johnson had a similar injury and recovered. You are acting like Slaton’s neck injury is still there or that is sapped talent out of him. The truth is we havent seen him enough after it to say it any kind of lingering issue at all. Keep in mind you are arguing against me that Slaton isnt good enough to sit on the bench as a 4th string RB. Its not like the guy is likely to get on the field for this team even if they rebuild his neck out of steel and a drop of Andre’s blood.

Joseph has proven himself over a span of 5 seasons

Foster may have only one season under his belt, & that’s why he hasn’t gotten paid yet. If Foster can’t go, it’s next man up. However the meniscus tear he played through last season is much different from a pinched nerve in the neck that causes numbness in Slaton’s hand.

I'll give you that

Here’s what I don’t get about the mob on here – many are clamoring for the Trindget to make the team because of his speed/elusiveness/whatever, but Slaton can potentially get you that and has at least proven it in the NFL before. A long time ago with a rocky road between there and now, but at least he has done it before.

I think the upside for him is a “gimmick” back, which sounds like an insult, but if your 4th RB can make like 5 special plays a year on screens/trick plays whatever that’s incredible value at that point on the roster. Others like Reggie Bust and Sproles get a lot more (in terms of $ and position on the depth chart) with no more ability.

It’s basically a low risk gamble with maybe a little bonus thrown in.

FFS, some of you act like the dude is still a top 5 RB when he had ONE good season. NFL history is riddled with dudes who did it once and never came back to repeat it. Just because he made us cream our pants once doesn’t mean we need to hold on to him forever if he’s not healthy and can’t hold on to the ball.

The only thing he proved was that he has a bum neck, which is likely the cause of the fumbling issues.

Look, I’ve got nothing against the guy personally. I cheered for him just as loud as anyone else, and would LOVE for him to prove me wrong, but the fact is I’d rather have a HEALTHY option in case we get thin at the position. Ogbowhatever may not be the former Steve Slaton but at least he has been carrying the ball all preseason without injury, and he would be serviceable in an emergency situation for a few games. That’s all a #4 is asked to do anyway, right?

I get something different from Slaton not playing

I think Kubiak is considering keeping him and wanted to play it safe. I don’t think it’s a big deal, I think the real decision is whether we want a 4th RB or not. I don’t think Slaton is particularly awesome anymore, but I do think he has way more talent and potential than a typical #4 RB.

As long as he isn’t returning any kicks.

by WhiskeyR on Sep 2, 2011 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

you mean he had a minor injury in the preseason

like our entire RB group? Its not like he tore an ACL. Nowhere did I say he was a top 5 NFL, in fact nowhere did I even say we should hold on to him. This whole thing started because several people are diluted and think Chris O would be a better #4 RB than Slaton if we kept 4.

Murphy’s 20th Military Law:
If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid

by The Night Owl on Sep 2, 2011 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

what exactly are you basing this on

Post injury he has 20 carries and he averaged like 4.9 yac. I have yet to see a single quote from a coach or Slaton himself saying the neck was an issue. Foster blew up and they drafted Tate so the dude will no longer have an opportunity to prove he still has something, its as simple as that. Honestly I hope they cut him so the guy can get an opportunity somewhere else.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

by DaGoaT on Sep 2, 2011 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Because there's no way I'd trust a running back with a fused vertebrae with a history of fumbling the ball

And the only reason he even got those carries was because of disciplinary reasons. Arian could do everything that Slaton could do just as effectively, so there was no need to use Slaton, & that’s why he only got 20 carries. Kubiak also tried him at KR cause the skills he had as a rookie would have translated perfectly to a return man, but he was abysmal as a return man. Pretty much, there’s no reason to keep him

Murphy’s 20th Military Law:
If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid

by The Night Owl on Sep 2, 2011 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions

So you're just arguing for the sake of correcting people for their opinions?

I think the argument is that Chris O gives us a better option as a healthy #4 based on the fact that he has been able to play all preseason, not that he’s better than Slaton. Hell, give me a healthy Slaton any day but the fact is he hasn’t even been able to practice for almost the entire camp.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter predicted on SportsCenter Friday that Kerry Collins would be the Colts’ Week 1 starting quarterback.

“They’re going as if Kerry Collins is going to be the starter,” said Schefter. “That’s the feeling in the organization.” Schefter appears to be referring the early season only; the Colts wouldn’t have removed Peyton Manning from the PUP list if they expected him to sit out the entire year. We’ll know more when the Colts begin Week 1 preparations next week, but for now it looks like Collins is in the driver’s seat to start against the Texans. It would be a major early-season blow to all of Indianapolis’ pass catchers.

Madden ratings

are determined by people who need a flashlight to find their own asshole.

by pecosbob on Sep 2, 2011 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Considering the huge undertaking that is essentially done by 1 guy

I really don’t think they are that bad. It just seems to be a common internet meme to complain “zomg that idiot only ranked [hometown hero 3rd string TE] a 67! WTF IDIOT!!!”

With the ridiculous turnover in the NFL and amount of people to keep track of without any kind of inside access that can’t be an easy job.

Another important part to look at – Ignore player’s overall ratings on Madden. For years they have boosted a players irrelevant attributes in order to make his overall match public perception without affecting his on the field play.

For example, “popular NYJ lineman” may have an overall that puts him above, say Davin Joseph, but his blocking attributes aren’t as good and his OVR is boosted by things like Awareness (largely irrelevant for line play), KR ability, Zone coverage etc.

Or a more local one – Arian Foster is ~#6 yet no RB is more balanced than him and the ones rated higher all have some flaw. ADP fumbles, CJ & MJD aren’t as physical, SJAX & Turner not as elusive/agile etc. I actually like how they do this.

You can build an awesome team with players ranked 75-89 easily.

by Jason Brown on Sep 2, 2011 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Sharpton and Dobbins

I like Sharpton but Dobbins… meh… I guess they wanted someone who can tackle since in a 3-4, ILB’s are tackling machines. Adibi probably fit more as an OLB. I did hope we would give him one more chance but meh.

Mario Williams will have 2 sacks and 6 tackles against the 49ers

by Tony Ung on Sep 2, 2011 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm worried about the ILB depth too.

We could’ve kept Adibi for that. I could’ve sworn that I saw him player all 4 LB positions this preseason. Guess the coaches just didn’t like him.

I think his only real effectiveness came at OLB though

And we’ve got better options there. If they can replace him with a better inside tackler then I’m ok with it.

We keep 4 RB’s early in the year considering Foster’s hamstring and the whole group has had it’s injury issues this preseason.

rotation/depth

It seems like most on here are concerned about at least one of those two guys anyways.

This would actually be hilarious the more I think about it, because we would just be using him at a relatively cheap rate with absolutely no intentions of renegotiating, and would have 3 years to look for a better trade

by Jason Brown on Sep 2, 2011 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

If we didn't give him his contract he could simply holdout here as well.

To be honest at his age we’d be better off looking for a cheaper player. No telling how well he’d play in the 3-4 either. He and Urlacher play off each other pretty well in the Bears 4-3.

Regardless that’s a lot for a rotation guy.

When we go Nickel Quin will cover the slot WR and Troy will come into the game and play at Safety.

That's just about everyone behind Allen or Harris

Murphy’s 20th Military Law:
If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid

by The Night Owl on Sep 2, 2011 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

has this actually been confirmed?

I’ve seen a few comments about it but haven’t seen it in a game, which you would think Wade would have wanted to try out by now.

I’m not sure how I feel about it. Nolan seems to only play well in CA, and it would push Brandon Harris even farther down the depth chart.

I’ve been lobbying for the opposite idea – make Allen the dime CB and let him also be a backup at safety

by Jason Brown on Sep 2, 2011 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I've seen it in game.

Sparingly but I’ve seen it. Troy has definitely impressed coaches with his play in camp and in games (not just the 49ers game). Quin is more than capable of covering the slot and I’m more confident with him doing that on a regular basis than, say McCain.

Harris is a rookie and I expect little out him this year. Rookie CB’s take time to develop. Next year he’ll start to see a lot more play time.

Texans coaches have said they want Allen to be a full time CB. Miami tried to play him at both S and CB when he was a Dolphin and it didn’t work at well.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Sep 2, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
