Ugh.

Are people going to freak out about this the way they did when we worked out Bhomar?
NFL teams work out street guys EVERY week. Yes, most of them aren’t any good. That is why they are unemployed at the moment. They are just doing their homework so if they get hammered by injuries at one position they have some idea which washed up/has been/never was they are going to sign to fill the roster hole.
Workouts this time of year mean nothing. Hell sometimes they mean less than nothing. Sometimes they probably are just doing an agent a favor so he looks like he’s trying to get his guy a job even though he has no chance of being signed.

I just endured the Bhomar freak out last week
When I had my “so what” reaction people were trying to convince me how terrible Bhomar was like I didn’t know and couldn’t understand why the Texans were wasting time. Um, maybe because they needed some slapdick QB to throw to the slapdick WR’s they were working out.
The ONLY time these workouts should get any attention is when there has been an injury or two and the team is looking to pick somebody up. Even then the guys working out that week might not be who the team signs because they have been doing their homework every week on available players.

Somewhat disappointed to not see Pat Williams on that list.
GET A SILK BAG FROM THE GRAVEYARD DUCK TO LIVE LONGER.
1 more try
Pat williams would be a significant uprade to the run support in the middle, he prolly wants more money than the Texans are willing to spend, he is the oldest defensive player in the NFL, if he could play 25 snaps a game, that would be 25 less worries about opponents running over the NT.
did I type that outloud? oops.
really? I hadn't heard that before
hopefully this gets mentioned 15 times a week going forward on BRB so I don’t ever forget that we should sing Pat Williams even though its probably not going to happen. :)

As an OLB
is he an upgrade over Bulman?
Also, what’s been the knock on Gholston? I remember when he came out that he was a physical freak. Does he just not seem to know how to play football well (ie can be coached up) or does he just not seem to care enough (ie waste of time)?
Just hasn't played well. Rex Ryan is a very good defensive coach and they've given him several opportunities to succeed.
He’s moved from OLB to DE in a 3-4 and played DE in a 4-3 and still could not get anything positive. He has not produced and his first round draft position makes him a huge bust.
just wanna point out...

that's your opinion and you aren't Wade Phillips
You are just a blogger. You are welcome to your opinion here, of course and I welcome it. I enjoy the banter! I just don’t think Cody is as bad as he is being categorized. I’m not saying he is aces, either. Stopping the run is job number one for a NT. Nashy did a game study and posted it yesterday and determined there was plenty of blame to be spread around. Cody was not the sole cause and replacing him is not going to be the answer to this. Is there a better option out there? Is Mitchell a better option? Wade Phillips says they are both options, so that’s what he’s going with for now. Wade Phillips has better film resources than we have. I trust what he’s doing..
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
by Rip Jersey on Sep 21, 2011 12:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
When?
Week one? Cody was better throughout 2010 and against Miami. Mitchell was better in preseason and a 15-sample size game when we were up by 34 at the half.
by Nashmeister on Sep 21, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions
if we go by 2010 performances Kareem would be cut.
We haven’t seen the numbers on the Miami game but there was a post from 9/17 showing the differences between Mitchell and Cody on run plays while we were in 3-4.
What about 2008 and 2009?
Or even 2010? You know Cody’s rankings (PFF):
2011: 71 out of 82 (yeesh)
2010: 42 out of 77 (below average)
2009: 72 out of 86 (horrific)
2008: 65 out of 86 (super stinky)
At 28, Cody isn’t going to improve much, either. So which one is the outlier? His 2010 season? 2008, 2009, and 2011? Mitchell vs. Cody in a two game sample size this season?
I’m not saying you’re wrong that Cody should start or that jkcheng is wrong in wanting Mitchell. To me, the answer is neither. However, I will say I agree with what we’re doing with the personnel we’ve got, rotating them in and out and seeing if one of them can figure it out. It’s not a problem likely to be solved this year.

Have a good pass rush/ pass defense than a good run defense. In a perfect world you would like both of course, but the NFL today is a pass oriented league, so if I had to choose one I would go with what we have. It would be nice to upgrade NT and our run D, but hopefully our offense will force other teams to pass more to keep up, which should limit our liabilty with the run.
I generally agree.
I’ll exchange some problems with the run to be able to stop the pass and pressure the QB. If it has to be one or the other that is.

I’m not sure that putting Watt in at NT and sliding Mario back down to DE with Reed stepping in wouldn’t be a bad option if teams really start to exploit our NT situation. Just a thought though, no need to throw a rope around my neck just yet…

did I type that outloud? oops.
I almost feel bad thinking this...
Is Mario at OLB actually hurting this defense? Yes, Mario is a beast, but having a rush only linebacker lessens the versatiity of the defense. Would having Reed at OLB instead increase the overall effectivness? Right now offenses know for a fact that Williams is rushing. If you replace Williams with someone also capable of covering, that opens up the blitz to come from any one of the four linebackers. Thus making this defense more surprising and more dangerous.
Note, this is merely a guess as I am not as football smart as most people on here…not yet anyways.

Ware has 4 sacks, 1 QB Hit, and 5 QB Pressures, which is a 20 on my QBOuch! rating I totally made a last year or the year before (3 points for a sack, 2 for a hit, and 1 for a pressure).
Mario has 2 sacks, 2 hits, and 9 (9!!!) pressures for 19 points…AND a batted pass for a pick.

There's no question that Mario will do well
With Wade at the helm and with Marios freakish size and athletisism, he’ll be able to put up good numbers regardless. My thought was the defense as a whole might not be as effective with him at OLB because its more predictable.
Frankly its more of a question. Would having an OLB that is MORE well rounded (can cover as well as rush), be better for the defense, as any given linebacker can be used to rush while the others defend the pass.
by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 21, 2011 8:20 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Just one sack, but I still think it was the best game of his career. He harassed Brees all day long and must have flattened Reggie for no gain three times.
Mario is doing an excellent job at OLB.
And the scary part is that he’s still learning. Imagine 5-6 games under his belt…. I’m expecting beyond beastly numbers.
