First El Alamein? Yep.

Rommel played right into Auchinleck’s hands. The Brits had time to dig in, and Germans obliged by hitting the strongest part of the Brits’ lines. Lack of clutch on Rommel’s part, so that part of the Venn diagram I wholeheartedly agree with.

My mom.....

had a brother that was in a “rally point” in Germany when VE day was declared…..however, he was then supposed to be sent back to the states, shipped to the west coast and sent into the Pacific….however VJ day occurred before that happened. That being said, she did live through the rationing, etc brought on by WWII. And she is a vehement supporter of the dropping of the A-bombs on Japan.

My dad remembered his family having a quarter (that’s right ladies and gentleman a quarter) to feed a family of eight. He said you could buy a lb of “tailings” (read all the shit trimmed off the prime cuts) from the local butcher for a quarter and he said it made a hell of a stew.

Same for my grandfather. He clocked flight #24 right before VE day. Afterward, he was sent to Offut (I believe) for training on the B-29. He was in Seattle when the first bomb was dropped, on his way to be deployed to the Pacific Theater. Fortunately, he never had to make the trip.

The North Africa theater makes for great fun in speculation.

Small things could have drastically altered outcomes- if Afrika Corps had a better supply situation, if Malta had been neutralized by the Axis, if British General Gott hadn’t been killed in an air crash (thus giving some guy named Montgomery a chance to command), etc. It was pretty dang close, but I for one am glad that things turned out the way it did. “End of the beginning…” and all that.

Hopefully last season is the Texans’ first El Alamein, and we can look forward to the unconditional surrender of AFC South.

by Spektr6 on Sep 21, 2011 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

If Rommel had the support he needed there can be little doubt that he would have at LEAST stalemated the Allies in Africa.

Unfortunately (for Rommel and subsequently the Axis), the inability of the Axis to maintain the supply lines into North Africa proved catastrophic.

Even Rommel can’t win without men and materials.

When I was in the Army I got to spend some time at the Foriegn Military Studies Office.

As an Intel guy there I wrote thesis on topics for the Command and General Staff College.

The best part is that the CGSC has TONS of texts written by foriegn millitary officers. So I now have a collection, for instance, of after action reports written by German Officers after the war at the request of the War Department (now DoD of course).

The texts are generally obscure as you won’t find them in bookstores but they paint incredible pictures of the events of the time.

I have one peice written by a Staff Office under Rommel describing the history of the Afrika Corps and the key moments and battles. Of particular interest are the revelations of Rommel’s character in his personal interactions with his officers.

Good stuff!

On an off topic side note regarding Schwabbie

does it scare anybody else how quick Schaub is to scrap a play and chunk the ball away… even after he has escaped the pocket? Also it seems like when things get REAL hairy in the pocket he would rather just drop like a potato sack than make an effort to escape at the risk of taking a shot? Now I know this could be what Kubes told him to do to avoid having to deal with an injury at QB, but it scares me sometimes bc if we make it to the playoffs it seems like theres always a moment where great QBs escape a rush to extend a play at a crucial moment and I rarely… if ever see that from Schaub.

by theSpaceCityKid on Sep 21, 2011 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

That's normally my concern with him.

But I think I only saw that once against Miami. He played pretty brilliantly considering the constant pressure coming up the middle. I was particularly fond of a play he (almost) made in the red-zone, when he avoided the rush, scrambled to his left, and pump-faked two defenders before making the throw. One of the defenders made a great off-balance play to tip the pass, but otherwise it’s 6 instead of 3, and our red-zone efficiency looks much better.

by Nashmeister on Sep 21, 2011 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

True

I guess I can only hope that side of him can take over his style of play as the season goes on and team confidence grows (especially after we beat NO on their side of the bayou).

He might bail on a play a little too quickly but....

One of the reason P8ton managed such an impressive streak of consecutive starts was that he was to quick to get rid of the ball and his ability to avoid the big hits. I can’t count the # of times I’ve seen Manning avoid taking a big hit by going to the ground right as the rush gets there. It’s still a sack, but at least he’s not getting drilled.

It’s hard to say if Schaub is going down too quickly without being able to see the field. If he knows all his options are covered and he can’t run for a few yards then by all means go down when the sack is inevitable.

Agree Eleventy billion percent.

Schaub has always had trouble with pocket awareness and getting stripped when rushers close in, and he’s trying to make a play. This likely pisses Kubes off, so I’m sure he’s coaching Matt to just eat it, because he’s not Michael Vick anyway. Coaches always say that punting isn’t always bad, and compared to a sack/fumble or sack/injury, I’ll take a punt any day.

Not an attack on Schaub, just a poke at the phrasing of the earlier comment:

“Schaub just had twin girls…” My guess is his wife or significant other helped a little bit too. If Schaub threw for 10,000 yards and 90 TD’s this year, I’d still be more impressed by him being the first man to give birth to a child, and twins no less. Not a knock on Schaub in the least, but I can see where it sounds that way.

Also, maybe it’s just my residual injury fears about Schaub, but he does avoid hits on a sack. I applaud it though. If he’s going to be sacked anyway, why take the hit AND the sack? I’m totally ok with protecting his safety first.
