It will be interesting to see who picks him up

He was never going to get a chance to bounce back here, but I think he could round into an excellent 3rd down back for someone like Arizona or Tampa Bay.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

Disappointed that we didn't get anything for him.

Elated that he’s gone. When Kubiak doesn’t even trust you to run when the only other RB is gassed, you know you have nothing left in the tank.

Once they realized he had no trade value, he was as good as gone.

Just wish they’d made the realization before he had a chance to see the damn field.

by Kidaster on Sep 27, 2011 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm thinking maybe they did.

But Foster’s injury and Ogbannaya’s inexperience cut into their plans. I’m willing to bet that if Foster, Ward and Tate had all been healthy coming out of camp, Slaton would not have made the final 53-man roster.

Then Ward’s injury made it necessary for Slaton to spell Tate at points, and it was ugly (I don’t think they were using him to his strengths, but that’s for another post).

Best of Luck to Steve Slaton

I wasn’t actually paying much attention to the details of the Texans back in 2008 so I actually missed how awesome he was.

I hope he regains his confidence and has fun again.
Life is too short to spend it worrying about the little things.

God Bless you, Mr Slaton! We’re thankful for the time you could spend with us ESPECIALLY 2008.

Maybe he’ll find a good home with another team.

I'm tacking this on to the very puzzling moves that this FO has made this season

Cutting the punter, then resigining the same punter. Cutting Bulman then resigning Bulman. Now, this. Why didn’t they cut him before and bring up OB1? Puzzling. No number of MDC LOST timelines can explain it. There is always the “why?” that will never be answered. We are just along for the ride. What will the ending be? I can only think it will be as disappointing. Naw, I don’t really believe that. Just taking a dig at LOST….. is all.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

My Flux capcitor is rusty

And I don’t have a Mr. Fusion to power it. So I can’t go back in time and sneak into the back door of the front office to spy on those guys.

But it is a bit confusing – but their big decisions this year weren’t too bad.

Mario Williams will have 4 sacks and 1 int by Game 4 of the regular season.

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 27, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

You are right on with your take

Big decisions, which I may give more of the credit to Wade Phillips, are the D decisions. On other decisions that don’t involve the D, I find it puzzling and a bit disconcerting. And, they aren’t major decisions. Maybe there was a real attempt to have Steve Slaton contribute and become the old Steve Slaton or at least a facsimile capable of getting a 7th rounder in trade. But, none of that happened. I keep referring to the other actions, because frankly they are still puzzling and any angle I put on them, they just don’t make sense in how they got to where they got. I agree with the final outcome, but getting there, the journey makes as much sense as a LOST timeline. There I go again…..

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

by Rip Jersey on Sep 28, 2011 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

depth

We’re talking about a punter and 4th and 5th players on the depth chart here that are 50/50 at best to be active on gameday. Similar to shifting around players on your fantasy bench to try and find that diamond. Now if these types of moves are being made with your starting QB (see Bill Polian) you are in trouble but these guys are easily interchangeable.

It's Our Time.... or something...

YAYYY!!!!

Just heard the news on ESPN thank God.

by jtr bmf 281 on Sep 27, 2011 5:03 PM CDT reply actions

I would love to hear Rick Smith explain this...

I wonder if there’s more to this than we know. Perhaps Slaton has been having some slight recurrence of his previous injury, perhaps Ogbonnaya has been doing really well on the Practice Squad, perhaps this was pre-ordained if they couldn’t trade Slaton. Then again, it could have been that they wanted a system vet on the squad given the uncertainty with both Foster and Ward, and now that both might be back (assuming Ward is close to being back), Steve’s value as someone who knows the system has diminished.

Or maybe it’s just that Slaton was completely ineffectual between the tackles, where Ogbonnaya at least offers some chance at getting a few yards.

Sad given Slaton’s breakout rookie year. Definitely a shame he decided to gain 15-20lbs before the 2009 season thinking it would help. :(

I think they would have cut Slaton earlier had Ward and Foster not gotten hurt.

But the Texans run game has been sub par to say the least ( not a single run over 20 yards yet). Slaton really hurt his chances in the Saints game. They wanted him to help the running game but he was entirely ineffective. To ineffective. I remember Kubiak shaking his head when Slaton ran into a blocker in one of our redzone trips. He didn’t get a carry after that.

Since Chris O knows the scheme already he as the temporary #3 behind Foster and Tate makes sense.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Hugh Jarce on Sep 27, 2011 7:01 PM CDT reply actions

Nope.

I think if I had it all to do over again, I probably would’ve made for a decent high school tight end if I’d applied myself. I probably wasn’t tall enough to do much beyond that — definitely not fast enough to play a skill position or CB.

More importantly, I spent my high school years dealing with a lot of family trauma and being utterly depressed about it. So that pretty much kept me from doing anything fun in those years.
