BRB: Transactions Open Thread 9/3

Here's the place to drop news on cuts from around the league along with possible targets.  For example, Igor Olshansky was released by the Cokeboys today, and he'd almost certainly instantly become the best NT in franchise history and he'd provide depth (yes, I butchered this.  What I get for posting and paying bills at the same time).

A few guys I saw

Mardy Gilyard (WR) – Cut by the Rams today who just have way too many WRs on the roster. I think he could be interesting as a slot option for us, This is only his second year and he has decent speed with a cheap contract.

Trey Lewis (DT) – Good size at 6’3" and 316 lbs, he was good against the run and is still young at 26. Could be decent depth.

Rennie Curran (LB) – A bit undersized linebacker, he nevertheless has excellent range and quickness, if he put on about 10 pounds he might be more promising depth at ILB than Dobbins.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

Unfortunately I think he’s a bit small for Kubiak’s liking.

He played DE and is familiar with Wade's one-gap 3-4 and that is probably one of the reasons why he is leaving Dallas, because of Ryan's two-gap

Plus there was a younger player put ahead of him….

But at 6’-5", 315, why couldn’t he play NT in Wade’s 3-4?

Nwagbuo has been a regular contributor in San Diego over the past two seasons, but his performance was a different story. Still, he can play nose tackle and end in the 3-4. It wouldn’t be surprising if he attracted some interest.

I don’t necessarily see Wade as the Texans savior either, but thus far, his scheme and the coaches he brought in SEEM to have strengthened the team’s potential defensively. I just hate the feeling that there is noone on the sideline that is watching and tracking the game clock at the end of the halfs. Potentially that would be the responsibility of the ST coach….another question mark in my mind for the Texans,

Robinson was eighth on the Chargers’ depth chart going into their preseason finale, and couldn’t move up it despite a six-catch, 120-yard effort. A weird thought just went through my head, which I'll mention

I wonder is today, teams that think they are in the running for The Lucky Sweepstakes will be making strange and not so obvious cuts of good players under the guise of cost-cutting in order to position themselves for the said lottery. And, as a result, teams with needs that might put them over the top, such as the Texans, might be sitting in position to benefit from this.

Is that a weird thought or so I just have to much free time to think? or, both?

I'd like to think

That no team would have that little self respect to intentionally bomb a season just to have the first pick. For one there would likely be a coaching change so no coach would want that and two there’s no guarantee that any first overall pick will be amazing. Like back in 05 when everyone was galling the game between the Texans and 49ers the Bush Bowl for the chance to draft Reggie #1. Bet a whole bunch of teams are glad they didn’t “win” that honor.

by BricAM on Sep 3, 2011 1:31 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

That really hurts the Chiefs.
According to Jude Wilbers of WREX in Rockford, Illinois, Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki is out for the season with a torn ACL.
The rumors had been flying all morning, but this is the first confirmation. Moeaki suffered the injury in the preseason finale when the Chiefs opted to get substantial playing time for the starters. The oft-injured tight end was still recovering from offseason surgery, though it’s not clear if it’s the same knee. If the report is true, it’s a huge loss for the Chiefs, as Moeaki had been moved around in a Dallas Clark role in training cmap.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

The Aggies did not get rejected by the SEC. The SEC had to make a statement declaring they were not actively recruiting schools in rival conferences as per NCAA rules.

The Texas A&M Front office is not moronic enough to plan to leave the Big 12 unless they had a plan in place, ie going to the SEC.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say, that the Ags aren’t going to the SEC, or that OU is jealous, or going themselves?

My understanding is that legally OU is died to OK State and your likelihood of going to the SEC because of this is very small. OU has a small TV audience and adding both schools is out of the question.

Rams waived DT Marlon Favorite.
Favorite is used to this kind of treatment. Originally undrafted out of LSU, Favorite has literally been on upwards of 10 different teams’ rosters.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Lions waived S Ricardo Silva.
The Lions are rolling the dice that they can get Silva onto the practice squad after a ball-hawking preseason that saw him intercept two passes and force a fumble. Undrafted out of Hampton, he’ll at least get some looks on waivers.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Baylor

Yesterday I drove up to go to the Baylor game from Sugar Land and it was the most amazing game I have ever seen, I thought Baylor had it going into the 2nd half up 47-23 but somehow TCU scored 25 unanswered points but I got to storm the field and I saw Robert Griffin III and Kendall Wright, whom I hope Texans draft next year to replace Jacoby Jones. Best game I have ever seen for sure.

The Texans Reduce Roster to 52
Updated: Saturday, 03 Sep 2011, 4:06 PM CDT
Published : Saturday, 03 Sep 2011, 3:50 PM CDT

 MARK BERMAN
Sports Director
HOUSTON – The Houston Texans released safety Shiloh Keo, the fifth-round pick from Idaho, fourth-year linebacker Xavier Adibi and the only punter on their roster, Brad Maynard, as they reduced their roster from 80 to 52 players, one below the maximum.

The Texans’ cuts include tight end Anthony Hill, who was taken in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

He played in five games in 2009, but didn’t play in any last season.

Hill is a former star at Clear Brook High School.

Other local products who were released include runningback Chris Ogbonnaya from Strake Jesuit, along with linebacker Cheta Ozougwu from Rice, the Texans’ seventh-round pick, and receiver Terrence Toliver, from nearby Hempstead, who were waived injured.

The Texans cut receiver Trindon Holliday, their sixth-round selection last year.

Also released on Saturday are receiver Dorin Dickerson, defensive tackle Damione Lewis, center Howard Barbieri, long snapper Scott Albritton, linebackers Mister Alexander, Steven Friday, Stanford Keglar, and Matt Marcorelle, defensive end Scooter Berry and John Graves, safety Quentin Demps, guard Andrew Gardner, and tackle Pete Hendrickson.

The Texans also waived receiver Jeff Maehl, defensive tackle Guy Miller, fullback Zac Pauga, tackle Cole Pemberton, receiver Derrick Townsel, center Cody Wallace, runningback Javaris Williams and safety Torri Williams.
