Houston Texans Sign RB Chris Ogbonnaya, Six Others To Practice Squad

Per Houston Chronicle writer John McClain, the Houston Texans have signed the following players to their practice squad:

Running Back Chris Ogbonnaya
Wide Receiver Trindon Holliday
Wide Receiver Jeff Maehl
Guard Andrew Gardner
Center Howard Barbieri
Linebacker Mister Alexander
Safety Shiloh Keo

Star-divide

It looks like return specialist Trindon Holliday will get one more chance to make good on that freak speed, while Keo and Maehl will spend a year refining their technique for a legitimate run at a roster spot in 2012. Also, color me surprised that Ogbonnaya cleared waivers.

I imagine that since the Texans also claimed guard Thomas Austin from the New England Patriots that they will waive someone, sign a punter, and that waived player will become the final member of the practice squad. I will throw out the names punter Travis Baltz (who had what Indianapolis fans describe as a good preseason) and cornerback Roc Carmichael. Anyone else want to speculate punters and eighth practice squad member? The comments are yours.

I don't understand that either

Holiday has zero NFL potential. He’s fast, but that’s it.

Well

at least he could be a kick returner, Slaton can’t even be that and we have him on the 53 man roster for some reason.

Slaton has his fumbling issues

but he’s definitely not devoid of NFL potential. I doubt any team in the league has a better #4 RB.

My guess

Is that after this year kick offs will be moved back to the 30, in which case we will need a return specialist, so why not

Dickerson

has had a year and a pre-season to show he could make the transition from TE to WR. In that time he convinced the coaches that he, in fact, cannot play WR as Kubiak’s offense requires. He’s too light to play TE and, well, we have a plethora of those anyway.

seriously

I don’t understand the disappointment in Dickerson’s release. Avery, Tate, and Houzh are all better options as a #5 receiver than Dickerson. I’d rather slide Maehl in or go back and get Anderson than waste a roster spot on a failed experiment.

I also can’t explain the infatuation with Holliday.

From what I understand, being on a practice squad is a lot like being a free agent.

The main different is that you can practice with the team that signed you to their practice squad.

However, also from what I understand, Holliday shouldn’t be eligible for the practice squad, so take that how you will.

Ya I dont understand Holliday

I think the PS rules are based on the Aztec calender because he spend all last season on the IR which should have made him ineligible.

by Steelbluecurtain on Sep 4, 2011 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Players can’t have already been on a practice squad for two or more years, although a third year on the practice squad is possible if a player’s team has had at least 53 players on the roster during his entire period of employment (players are deemed to have spent a season on the practice squad if they are on it for three of more regular season or postseason games during their first two years and at least one during their third year)

Players can’t have an accrued season of NFL experience (six or more games on a team’s 53-man roster, injured reserve or PUP list), unless they were on the active list (i.e. were dressed to play) for fewer than nine regular season games during their only accrued season(s)

Source.

Those rules seem not only contradictory, but inconsistent with what the Texans have reportedly done with the practice squad so far, so I’m rather confused.

by Synchysi on Sep 4, 2011 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually it makes sense

He was on IR, he dressed for fewer than 9 games (0 in his case)

by WhiskeyR on Sep 4, 2011 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

So he accrued a season on IR but was active for less than 9 games

so he’s eligible.

What does that mean for dickerson? Was he active 9 games?

by WhiskeyR on Sep 4, 2011 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right, reading comprehension is evidently not a strength of mine.

As for Dickerson, I’m seeing him active for seven games, but I can’t really find anything concrete.

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 4, 2011 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Its probaby a moot point anyways

If he were eligible, I imagine they’d have put him on the PS. But apparently given the language above, as long as he dressed for less than 9 games he’d be eligible.

by WhiskeyR on Sep 4, 2011 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Yahoo shows he was active for 7 games

I don’t have any idea how accurate that is

Mario Williams will have 4 sacks and 1 int by Game 4 of the regular season.

by Barryfromtexas on Sep 4, 2011 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

That should make him eligible if accurate

I have no idea why they’d PS Holliday but not Dickerson? But at any rate, its funny how people get really high on someone like him and think he’s going to light up the world and in reality he’s not even good enough to play in the league.

With that said, I hope he finds himself a team though, hoping the best for him.

Oingo Boingo kinda strikes me as a dime-a-dozen guy. The few plays I saw of Keo he decided to dive at the feet of the ballcarrier and make no attempt to tackle with his hands. Maehl looked good. Newton probably goes to the PS if he’s eligable and they put Austin in his place.

well

where else would you address it? I’m sure there’s a better chance to get better receivers and NT’s that high. That’s all I’m implying. lol, but that’s a year away, I’m far more concerned about this year.

Linemen.

Always. You can’t ever have enough blockers.

by Nashmeister on Sep 4, 2011 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

true

but it seems our linemen are solid and entrenched in their positions: particularly our tackles. I have a hard time seeing the Texans address the interior line over the defensive line from the transition to the 3-4 in one year. I imagine we spend a first rounder on a DE/DT next season and possibly grab a linemen in the 3rd like they did w/ Winston and Caldwell. Just a thought.

by wiseonekms on Sep 4, 2011 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

We still need a guard.

Brisiel is injury-prone (and probably more of a product of the system than a quality player), and Caldwell hasn’t stepped up and claimed that spot like we thought he would. I agree that we’re set at the tackle positions (especially because of the Butler re-signing), but I’d feel much more comfortable with a new right guard and a little more depth inside. I don’t think you ever want to go two years in a row without spending a relatively high pick up front. That’s how good teams usually meet their demise.

by Nashmeister on Sep 4, 2011 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree

Brisiel is that good, and he’s our ONLY non-true ZBS OL.

theres a beter chance of getting better anythings that high

lets play the season and see. We might need MLB. Maybe we do need NT. maybe we need a new RT because Winston is in serious decline. Maybe we need a new RT because Briesel finally craps out and Caldwell isn’t good enough. Maybe Wade Smith was a pumbkin. Maybe our OLBs are actually bad. Maybe Mario leaves in FA. Maybe GQ actually isn’t an elite safty. We still might need CBs. A smith might need to be replaced. so on, so forth.

I'm not sure he has the length to take on offensive tackles.

He’s a little short, and a little short on arm length. That’s one of the more important aspects of playing 3-4 DE.

we need depth

at the position. It’s time to part ways w/ Jacoby. Andre is a super human, but come on, let’s be realistic, it’s the one position where if he were to go down, you’d be scrambling.

by wiseonekms on Sep 4, 2011 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

so you don't like jacoby

well, I hate to break it to you, but they didn’t just sign him to a 3 year extension because they agree with you. Our TEs get so much work that being a little shallow at WR doesn’t worry me much.

by nolander on Sep 4, 2011 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

true

but again, it doesn’t mean you don’t look to add quality depth at positions of need on your team. We have depth and quality at the TE position, but we lack it at WR. I do agree w/ BFD about our wr’s being primarily edge blockers and possession type guys first and foremost, but I think a bad*ss #2 wouldn’t be a terrible problem to have.

The same could be said about quality depth at the NT position.

by wiseonekms on Sep 4, 2011 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree.

I love Andre, but he has missed time before. He missed three games last year and we scored 31, 23 and 34 points in those games (Oakland, Denver and Jacksonville respectively). It would kill me if he missed significant time, but I think we could survive without him. There are plenty of weapons on offense, especially with OD finally healthy again and Casey primed for more PT.

Instead of drafting a receiver with third round or better pick, I’d rather we take a look at the current waiver wire; there are a small handful of receivers with potential out there.

This makes it sound like I think Andre is expendable, but that’s far from the truth. I just don’t think losing him would be as crippling as you seem to be implying.

we agree to disagree.

there’s a difference b/w a few games and an entire season. we’d get figured out, and there’s noone on our squad who can take over what he does. I say, there’s nothing wrong in using a high pick to find a guy who can fill his shoes. B/c there is noone on our roster at the moment who can.

by wiseonekms on Sep 4, 2011 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Injuries are difficult to predict.

By “significant time” I didn’t really mean the entire season, although anything can happen. I just think with a strong running game and the diverse weapons we have in the passing game, Andre is more a luxury than a requirement to make this offense work. Certainly he helps, but there are several teams out there with strong offenses that do it without a superstar receiver (Chargers last year, for example).

I’d love to get a good #2 opposite of Andre, something like what they think JJ can become, I just don’t see it as high a priority as strengthening the offensive line or the defensive front seven. I’m keeping an eye on Donnie Avery because, if healthy, I think he can be a really good slot receiver and I’d love for us to take a flier on him.

If the guy could truly become a badass in the return game, roster spots aren’t so valuable that you couldn’t devote one to a guy who is going to net you an extra 5-6 yards of field position on average. The problem is, he apparently has zero confidence at the pro level. He’s gotta find a way to regain that badassery he showed in college.

After all, we do have a spot or a long snapper. I just don’t see anything from him in a talent perspective to warrant a roster spot period. I guess that’s the thought process of putting him on the ps, b/c his ability to contribute in special teams is worth the gamble i guess.

like i said throwing lanes might be a problem (am in not an LSU fan). I think with his speed he could catch a ball short and continue to run and create plays that way. I’m not sure why so many people think he’s not a good WR. The fact our offense passing offense has huge contributions from the TE’s and RB’s it’s impressive his numbers were as high as they were last year. Especially with Jacoby getting like 28 more catches compared to his 2009 season.

In fact.....

We all know that Manning runs that team anyways. The offensive side of the ball, at least. No question.

ESPN: No new procedure scheduled for Manning at this time

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6931858/peyton-manning-neck-being-re-evaluated-doctors-sources-say

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is being re-evaluated by several doctors because of the slow progress in his rehab from offseason neck surgery, sources familiar with his medical condition told ESPN…

However, the sources said that no new procedure on Manning’s neck is scheduled at this time.

They call it a "Royale with Cheese".

So a sort-of confirmation

Maybe he needs a five head reduction so his neck isn’t strained

I know a vet that can do that procedure

Slaton

Ok, we kept Slaton, aside from one good year running, we know he can catch a ball from the backfield. So here are my thoughts on keeping Slaton.

1) We are setting him up for a trade to a non divisional opponent. He would have some value, maybe a 6th round pick or proven but older veteran receiver/lineman/long snapper/ TE. I mean he was a 1,000 yard rusher and there a few teams out there that need one as a back up.

2) Move him to the WR 5 slot. I know hes not a big WR like Kub likes, but he can catch a ball out of the back field and has decent speed. Just dont ask him to pound the ball in the inside, he will fumble it. Its not like WR5 gets that much playing time anyway in our offense. Mostly special teams play. If things go south with our running backs (o please god no) he could fill in there again. Just dont let him be returning anything.

3) hes there because kube has no idea what he wants

Of those, number two is most likely though there is a fourth option.

4) Kubiak is unsure about Foster’s hammy and wants to keep Slaton, who has proven he can succeed in this league, as insurance in case Foster has to miss some time. Once Foster is back healthy, Slaton will be cut loose provided he hasn’t performed exceptionally well. In that case, we may have a very good problem on our hands.

Yeah i should have thought of 4.

I dont think my second option is all that viable though. I think a combo of #4 and #1 are going to happen. He would have some value as a trade and by keeping him we have insurance on our running backs. Who always seem to get hurt.

I Kinda like the idea of him lining up like a receiver. You tell him he has a chance to make the team in a new capacity, and maybe we can get some new life out of him. Hes faster then Dreesen or Casey but I would say he can’t block like either of them can.

I agree with your take, especially that we don't want Slaton going to a divisional opponent

The Colts RBs suck and Jacksonville has taken injuries to their RBs. There is all likelihood that these two teams will pick him up if released, therefore, that’s why he is still on the team. That’s my 2 cents on Slaton, for what it’s worth.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

This is almost certainly true.

Otherwise, it doesn’t make much sense to have four RBs on the roster. I would imagine Foster is going to miss 3-4 weeks. Or perhaps it’s more of an indicator that our other back-ups also have injury issues.

Also, there’s a fifth possible reason, and I mentioned this in the comments of a training camp recap a few weeks back: Slaton can pick up the blitz. Kubiak is a sucker for RBs who can hold their own in pass protection. So if Kubiak is convinced that Slaton has overcome his fumblitis, it makes sense hang onto the RB who is the best blocker and receiving back on your team.
