Colts Dub Peyton Manning "Doubtful" For Opener Against Texans

Here's the Colts' official statement on Peyton Manning's status:

Star-divide

In response to a number of media inquiries, the Colts issue the following update on Peyton Manning’s status.

During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed. Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues. As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on.

At the conclusion of the diagnostic process, if there are any new developments in the prognosis which we outlined for Peyton at the start of training camp we will report them. As of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable.

As was stated at the outset, it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes. When and if there are concrete medical facts to report we will do so.

We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

He had pain in his back

End of story. They aren’t and can’t tell us anymore, anyways. That is Manning’s personal health issue, really.

I have had pain in my back. For Manning’s sake, I hope the pain is just a side effect of his neck condition and not something else.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Yup...

Best wishes to him for a long, pain-free and happy non-football life.

I am hoping Peyton is messed up too serious.

Back issues are no joke, and I would hate to see one of the best QBs lose his career due to it. I was sad when Dat broke his neck, even though he was a cowbitch he was still my favorite Linebacker.
On a side not, on twitter this was stated

baxfootballguru: 7days left till football and no. of wins by Texans against AFC South since 2007 7-17. It isn't just peyton manning. (paraphrased)
I responded with this
Joeeatstacos: @BaxFootballGuru 7-17 well take out the games we played manning since ‘07 that is 1-7 vs p8un. 6-10 isn’t bad.

Dat strained his neck

It was enough to end his career, so in a sense I guess it was “broken” to the extent that it wouldn’t allow him to play again, but it was not a medical break.

collins is no christian ponder.

so he’s gonna have to stay in there and take those hits. and here’s another thing. without a full camp to know all of your hot reads, it’s gonna be a long day in the pocket… i suspect if this happens indy ill try and run a lot of counters, traps, and draws. the key to victory will be our ability to jump out to an early lead. if we go up 10 or 13 in the first half, i think that’ll be enough for our defense to pin it’s ears back and get after collins.

Play One Play and Out?

Everyone knows that Manning’s consecutive games starting streak (currently 227) is important to him. Is there any reason he can’t start the game, do a run handoff, and then sit the rest of the game?

I agree

Injuries are part of the game. It doesn’t automatically warrant an asterisk if we happen to beat the Colts without Manning under center. They still put a full team on that field just like we do. Excuses aren’t necessary IMO. It’s their own fault if they haven’t planned for something like this by grooming a valid back up.

That said, we better not blow this opportunity.

Don't worry, be happy!

It’s all an elaborate plan to finish 2-14 and as the worst team in the NFL the Colts get Peyton’s successor Andrew Luck in the first pick of next year’s draft.

by pecosbob on Sep 5, 2011 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

To be honest

I think that even with Peyton, the Colts were 8-8. The rest of the team around him is crap, his o-line is basically Saturday and a bunch of rookies and duds, he has no run game, and his defense is meh. The man is a magician, but even Merlin got his in the end.

Throw Jared Allen in there as well.

Manning might have single-handedly done more damage to our franchise than anybody not named Charlie Casserly, but it was all through sheer awesomeness, not by any bush-league means (though I suppose it’s difficult to be dirty as a QB). My hatred for him never extends beyond the field for those two games each year.

Peter King had an interesting point in today's MMQB
The good news if Collins plays: The last five times he started for the Titans against Houston, dating to 2007, Tennessee scored 31, 31, 12, 31 and 38 points.

I don’t know how much of that is Collins playing well vs. Chris Johnson embarrassing our run D, but we shouldn’t start celebrating yet, regardless.

15/33 for 181 yards 1 INT, 2008 2nd game
13/25 for 185 yards 1 TD, 1 INT – 2008 1st game
25/42 for 280 yards – 2007 1st game

18/31 220 yards 1 TD, 1 INT for those who want a rough average….

Of course, as Banks pointed out….it’s against Frank Bush/Richard Smith coached 4-3 defenses…with Chris Johnson and Tennessee’s offensive line……

For those wondering, Collins is 0-7 against Wade defenses.

And of course, all of that is in the past….Sunday is what matters most.

No matter how easy it would be to let your guard down

I think this whole thing will fuel the Texans to prove otherwise, that they are there to play no matter who is playing QB on that day. Really, I think they will see both Collins and Painter before it’s all said and done. They will show up ready to play.

But at the end of the day, without Manning they remain a thoroughly mediocre team. They were going to get abused by us when he was scheduled to start and I don’t see this making anything better for the Colts.

Since Peyton isn’t playing do you think Kubiak is going to try and push foster to play on the first game? since it might not be a shootout? or does it all depend on our defense?

All I want to do is FAAAARRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM!!!....and COok.

by Mellowcheese on Sep 5, 2011 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

I think the chances that Kubes rests Foster increase drastically if Peyton doesn't play.

Tate and Ward should be enough to take on their sieve-like run defense and no Peyton means they can’t throw (which they prefer to do) and they don’t have much of a run game. So it’s not the worst of ideas to rest Foster in that case.

HAHAH.. They do have cool unis..

I’m a little worried about our opener.. We face and Old azz b too. But the last time we faced Hasselhoff he torched us for 4 tds the the hawks beat us 44-0. Then they proceded to go 4-12 for the hole season.. Ugh.

Than an absolute ASS RAPING.

I saw Pirahna 3D for the first time last night. The absolute craziest, goriest movie I think I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen alot.

If you have seen it, the scene where the Pirahanas go batshit crazy on about 300 kids and the water is blood red w limbs floating around and shit - that’s what I want to see Sunday.

dont know I think it's there state flag

I heard them saying something about having a turtle shell helmet but didnt see nothing like this.

One side is a part from the Maryland flag. The other side is maybe a tortoise pattern?

Funking UUUGGGGGLLLIIIEEEE. I thought Georgia’s uni’s were bad but we have a new contender for BUOY.

It's like they had two designs

couldn’t choose one so decided to go with both.

But yeah I turned on my T.V and nearly puked when I saw that design.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Call it

Who has a worse uni Maryland or Oregon?

by jtr bmf 281 on Sep 5, 2011 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually I like the Oregon pro-combat uniforms minus the duck wings on the shoulders

The neon green goes really well with the carbon. Maryland’s just looks tacky.

Mario Williams will have 2 sacks and 6 tackles against the 49ers

yeah Oregon actally has a few uni's I like

They have like 12 of them or something like that.

by jtr bmf 281 on Sep 5, 2011 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

32 diffrent combanations of uni's for Maryland

thats crazy. Guess there giving Oregon a run for there money

by jtr bmf 281 on Sep 5, 2011 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Well this one is by far the worst.

A couple of those i saw reminded me of Miami’s uniforms. But there were a couple interesting combo’s.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

I think all NCAAF teams should get a pro-combat uniform.

I like the Georgia helmets this year.

Just saw Rex Grossman to start in Washington

I suppose DanO will start Sunday for Indy? And Rosencopter starts for the Giants? Oh wait, he’s on IR, so Mittens starts for them?

Its looking good for Leinart and Yates to find a starting gig in the next few years. Nobody wants any of our ex-players, apparently, except our QBs.

I think the Colts released DanO

Say what you want about Kubes, the one thing he does know is how to develop a QB

by Catallac392 on Sep 5, 2011 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, they got what they needed out of Orlovsky.

Too bad he wasn’t around for any of the Tight End/H-Back Shenanigans that are (hopefully) about to be unleashed upon the NFL.

I thought the Texans had a good shot

at beating the Dolts twice this year with Manning. Their D-line, O-line , secondary and linebacker corps all went backwards in the offseason. I do so love the pouty face he makes after he gets sacked. Reminds me of his days with the Vols.

I hope Manning plays Sunday.

I want the Texans to stomp the Colts, but we need to beat them at their best. That way a victory won’t be overshadowed by Manning’s absence.

Luckily

this isn’t college football and there is no such thing as style points. We do not need to beat them at their best, we need to win more games than our division rivals.
