Colts Dub Peyton Manning "Doubtful" For Opener Against Texans
Here's the Colts' official statement on Peyton Manning's status:
In response to a number of media inquiries, the Colts issue the following update on Peyton Manning’s status.
During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed. Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues. As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on.
At the conclusion of the diagnostic process, if there are any new developments in the prognosis which we outlined for Peyton at the start of training camp we will report them. As of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable.
As was stated at the outset, it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes. When and if there are concrete medical facts to report we will do so.
We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

He had pain in his back
End of story. They aren’t and can’t tell us anymore, anyways. That is Manning’s personal health issue, really.
I have had pain in my back. For Manning’s sake, I hope the pain is just a side effect of his neck condition and not something else.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Yup...
Best wishes to him for a long, pain-free and happy non-football life.

I am hoping Peyton is messed up too serious.
Back issues are no joke, and I would hate to see one of the best QBs lose his career due to it. I was sad when Dat broke his neck, even though he was a cowbitch he was still my favorite Linebacker.
On a side not, on twitter this was stated
baxfootballguru: 7days left till football and no. of wins by Texans against AFC South since 2007 7-17. It isn't just peyton manning. (paraphrased)

I responded with this

Joeeatstacos: @BaxFootballGuru 7-17 well take out the games we played manning since ‘07 that is 1-7 vs p8un. 6-10 isn’t bad.

Dat strained his neck
It was enough to end his career, so in a sense I guess it was “broken” to the extent that it wouldn’t allow him to play again, but it was not a medical break.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
It was bad enough to end his career
so it might as well have been broken. I know it wasn’t an actual break.

collins is no christian ponder.
so he’s gonna have to stay in there and take those hits. and here’s another thing. without a full camp to know all of your hot reads, it’s gonna be a long day in the pocket… i suspect if this happens indy ill try and run a lot of counters, traps, and draws. the key to victory will be our ability to jump out to an early lead. if we go up 10 or 13 in the first half, i think that’ll be enough for our defense to pin it’s ears back and get after collins.

2 hopes
1. That people dont think we win the division because we beat a Kerry Collins Colts
2. Manning doesnt become stupid (all of a sudden) and decide he can rush his injury and get hurt.
I just praying that both the people and Manning are smart enough to realize this.

Play One Play and Out?
Everyone knows that Manning’s consecutive games starting streak (currently 227) is important to him. Is there any reason he can’t start the game, do a run handoff, and then sit the rest of the game?
He said he wouldn't do anything symbolic.
Also they’d have to suit up three QBs for that game if they suited him up.
I thought that wasn't a concern anymore
The “third quarterback rule” is no longer in effect as of this season.

But I am sadly super happy about this. Nothing against Payton but im tired of him somehow finding a way to beat us no matter what happens. It has gotten old. If this is the type of thing that its gonna take for us to get a leg up on the division then ill take it

I agree
Injuries are part of the game. It doesn’t automatically warrant an asterisk if we happen to beat the Colts without Manning under center. They still put a full team on that field just like we do. Excuses aren’t necessary IMO. It’s their own fault if they haven’t planned for something like this by grooming a valid back up.
That said, we better not blow this opportunity.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Don't worry, be happy!
It’s all an elaborate plan to finish 2-14 and as the worst team in the NFL the Colts get Peyton’s successor Andrew Luck in the first pick of next year’s draft.
To be honest
I think that even with Peyton, the Colts were 8-8. The rest of the team around him is crap, his o-line is basically Saturday and a bunch of rookies and duds, he has no run game, and his defense is meh. The man is a magician, but even Merlin got his in the end.

Even if Peyton misses the entire season, I'm betting the Bengals win the 'Suck for Luck' sweepstakes.
It’ll be interesting to see a team with an established QB or their QB of the future get the first pick. With the new rookie wage scale, we may see some trading at the top of the draft that we haven’t seen in years.

Throw Jared Allen in there as well.
Manning might have single-handedly done more damage to our franchise than anybody not named Charlie Casserly, but it was all through sheer awesomeness, not by any bush-league means (though I suppose it’s difficult to be dirty as a QB). Peter King had an interesting point in today's MMQB
The good news if Collins plays: The last five times he started for the Titans against Houston, dating to 2007, Tennessee scored 31, 31, 12, 31 and 38 points.
I don’t know how much of that is Collins playing well vs. Chris Johnson embarrassing our run D, but we shouldn’t start celebrating yet, regardless.
He was also behind the Titans O-line. Against Houston's shitty Defense. With a completely different set of receivers.

I won't go so far as to say that
but an injury like this can rally a team together. They can hear all this “Indy’s nothing without Manning” and it can unite and fuel them. It’s why I hope the Texans are blocking all of this out and getting to work.

They should be seeing it as an opportunity rather than a gift.

No matter how easy it would be to let your guard down
I think this whole thing will fuel the Texans to prove otherwise, that they are there to play no matter who is playing QB on that day. Really, I think they will see both Collins and Painter before it’s all said and done. They will show up ready to play.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
They can rally all they want
But at the end of the day, without Manning they remain a thoroughly mediocre team. They were going to get abused by us when he was scheduled to start and I don’t see this making anything better for the Colts.

Can't wait to see the backpedaling from
“The Colts are better with KC” to “The win doesn’t count because Manning wasn’t in!!!” that happens when the Texans obliterate the Colts on Sunday.
I think
That is the denial stage. Soon will be anger, sadness, bargaining, so much Colt brand bleach, then acceptance only after the W on Sunday.

Believe it or not, some Colts fans are going in the opposite direction
witness:
I’m pulling for all of this resulting in Andrew Luck as Peyton’s eventual successor. It’s going to be hard to beat out the Bengals for the prize, but I have faith in our defense and our running game.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Perhaps this bringing in Collins and keeping Curtis Painter is all a ploy of Irsay and Polian
Just might work….
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
The Bengals just drafted their qb of the future.
No franchise could possibly so incompetent as to draft a qb in the first round one year after doing the exact same thing?
Oh wait. It’s the Bengals. Never mind.

This is the colts crazy plan to get to the superbowl like the Steeler’s did last year with Big Ben’s Suspension? I know the circumstances aren’t exactly the same, but hey it could happen?
by Slightly Obsessed on Sep 5, 2011 4:22 PM CDT reply actions
No
Not a Chance, the Steelers can pound the ball on the ground for 30-50 plays a game and win a Defensive struggle. The Colts are build to sustain a lead, or win a shoot out. Not win a field postion, control the clock slugfest.
Plus the Steelers have proven quality backup QBs
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Hey guys i got a question.
Since Peyton isn’t playing do you think Kubiak is going to try and push foster to play on the first game? since it might not be a shootout? or does it all depend on our defense?
All I want to do is FAAAARRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM!!!....and COok.
I think the chances that Kubes rests Foster increase drastically if Peyton doesn't play.
Tate and Ward should be enough to take on their sieve-like run defense and no Peyton means they can’t throw (which they prefer to do) and they don’t have much of a run game. So it’s not the worst of ideas to rest Foster in that case.

His issue is totally unrelated. Is Foster ready or not is the only question with Foster.

but why play if theres no need too....
i know Foster will WANT to play, doesnt mean he get what he wants but then again they STILL havent paid him. or have they?
All I want to do is FAAAARRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM!!!....and COok.
Foster is a player, so there is always a need to play
Is he ready to play? If he isn’t, Kubiak will not play him.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
And not to "dis" Foster in any way, but Tate is a second round running back who has shown some skills...
I think he’ll do fine.

there is no need to rush Fosters hamstring and risk loosing him for the rest or most of the season.

I think this D is built to beat Manning
As UT just said, now they have a new DC, who we are trusting to bring direction to the D. I don’t think it matters if it’s Manning, Collins or Painter on the other side of the LOS. The D is bringing it. Have mercy on whichever QB is taking the snaps.

Ha Texans are soft yet the Tiatns are the most complete team in the divison?
He seems to omit the fact that the Titans defense was nearly as bad as ours last year, they have a completely new coaching staff, and their QB is on his last legs and had a bad year last season.
They have a really good running game but besides Britt they don’t have a very good passing attack.
Hell the Jags are a bit more “complete” IMO.
Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.
him and Michael Irvin must be sharing the crack pipe

Wow it's funny how time seems to have flown by.
Feels like just last week we were debating if the Texans should throw everything at Nnamdi or go after multiple solid players while impatiently waiting for the lockout to end.

And now we are just 5 days away from the regular season.

Just saw Rex Grossman to start in Washington
I suppose DanO will start Sunday for Indy? And Rosencopter starts for the Giants? Oh wait, he’s on IR, so Mittens starts for them?
Its looking good for Leinart and Yates to find a starting gig in the next few years. Nobody wants any of our ex-players, apparently, except our QBs.
my Z key can't take another free agent flurry
I think the Colts released DanO
Say what you want about Kubes, the one thing he does know is how to develop a QB
Yeah, they got what they needed out of Orlovsky.
Too bad he wasn’t around for any of the Tight End/H-Back Shenanigans that are (hopefully) about to be unleashed upon the NFL.
I thought the Texans had a good shot
at beating the Dolts twice this year with Manning. Their D-line, O-line , secondary and linebacker corps all went backwards in the offseason. I do so love the pouty face he makes after he gets sacked. Reminds me of his days with the Vols.
Hating Bud Adams since 1960
I hope Manning plays Sunday.
I want the Texans to stomp the Colts, but we need to beat them at their best. That way a victory won’t be overshadowed by Manning’s absence.
