The Day After: How Are You Feeling About Texans-Bengals?

Not pictured: Kevin Walter getting ready to clinch the AFC South.

Now that we've had a night to sleep on it, how do you feel about the Texans hosting the Bengals in the franchise's inaugural playoff game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CST (4:30 p.m. EST)?

Star-divide

Still excited to the point that you just don't care who the Texans are playing?
Worried about whether the Texans will be able to run the ball against the Bengals?
Wish the opponent was someone else, like the Raiders, Jets, or Bud Adams' Army of Darkness?
Wondering how you're going to get through the rest of the week with Saturday five agonizing days away?
Choked up about the thought of Andre Johnson finally going suiting up for a playoff game?
Bitter that the Texans didn't show a sense of urgency in terms of winning yesterday's regular season finale?
Even though you know it doesn't do any good, dreaming of what a fully healthy Texans squad would have done in the postseason?

With the performance the last three weeks.

Kubes is going down in history as the greatest sandbagger in the history of the nfl. Why all the sudden change in our offensive looks? Why all the coverage changes in our secondary? All season KJ had over the top help. All of a sudden we start giving up easily covered plays. We lost our intensity? I don’t think so. It may have been hard to watch, but I think Saturday we see it was all smoke and mirrors.

I had a dream. In that dream I saw a multitude of screaming people on Richmond. I saw Kubiak laughing. I saw Andre Johnson pouring champagne from a trophy on to Brian Cushings head. What does it mean?

I think thAt after the Bengals game,

There were a lot of alignment changes. Was this because of TJ? Or was it to bring in the team as healthy as possible? Can you say that the play calling in the Indy game was aggressive?

I thought the Indy game plan was a good one.

We should have tried to run the ball down their throats given the respective strengths of the teams. No need to exspose TJ to Freeny and Mathis anymore than absolutely necessary. Absent some of the most horrendous officiating I’ve ever seen, we win that game.

I was as upset as anyone after Indy…but my anger was not attributed to the game plan. More so the execution and officiating.

My anger was directed solely at the officiating in that game.

I agree with this

If we didn’t clinch, we probably hang 30+ on Indy, since we’d drop back and pass every now and then and try to call plays that work instead of calling plays that keep the QB upright.

TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.

Good post

I agree, especially regarding Wade and the defensive results. However, it did seem like the offense was using very limited schemes in an abbreviated playbook. This could be their effort to slowly develop Yates and/or masking/reserving new plays for the playoffs and not giving film study up in games that were basically meaningless.

NFL referee corruption is disgusting! I'm done as a season ticket holder until it gets cleaned up!

I think it's a case of Kubiak not wanting other playoff teams to have game film on Yates

There have been very few deep passes called since the last Cincy game

It could be a ploy to make teams think we have scaled the playbook back for T.J. by over emphasizing the short dump off plays. Not sure. All I know is I want to see some short slants to Andre as well as some deep shots.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Jan 2, 2012 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

Oh....I want to see some deep shots too.

But IIRC, kubiak has made reference to TJ missing some plays down the field. I think TJ has been going through typical rookie growing pains as D coordinators have made adjustments on him. I just have a very, very hard time believing Kubiak has been intentionally holding things back to save it for the postseason (absent the Titans game). What we have seen is more a function of lack of trust in a rookie QB, weak opponent run D’s, and a missing D coordinator.

I've wondered about this...

How would you “manufacture” psilocybin? I’m not feigning drug innocence here, but I honestly don’t know. I’m guessing its easier to just grow magic mushrooms than replicate psilocybin. If he was growing them, I suspect he might have ingested a few.

I don’t judge others choices in medication (even if its recreational use), but hallucinogens is a far cry from addictive substances like cocaine or alcohol. Hallucinogen users usually use their preferred drug only occasionally and in small doses. Many claim it is to breach spiritual boundaries instead of getting “high”.

Very excited though. Reliant is gonna be shakin and I’m hoping it will rattle Dalton just like it did Ryan.

by Dmo_Htx on Jan 2, 2012 11:33 AM CST via mobile reply actions

So excited. Regardless of outcome, I just hope for a good game.

Texans running game has been enigmatic this year. Hinges on O-line play. Hope Kubiak is flexible enough to go to the short screen game if the running game is not working and with it enough to adjust to what the Bengals are doing.

I wanted either Bengals or Titans. Raiders pass rush is pretty tough. Kicker could make the difference in what is likely to be a close scoring game. Jets are not great but if Sanchez can keep the turnovers down their defense might be able to abuse Yates. I am happy with the matchup.

I am not going to be very productive this week.

Andre deserves it. Here’s to many more playoff berths and some playoff noise in the years to come.

Yesterday’s game doesn’t matter. Pretty impressed with performance of Texans second stringers against Titans starters.

Healthy Texans squad might be the one seed in the AFC. Even a healthy Schaub might have been enough to make the difference. All players on field we would have a great shot at AFC championship and maybe Super Bowl berth.

One additional comment. Next year’s schedule looks like a bear with AFC East and NFC North on the schedule as well as first in the division games. Healthier team might make playoffs but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Texans staying home next January.

congrats on getting into the playoffs!

I thought Texans @ Bengals was a tough game. So I expect this playoff to be excellent here at Reliant.

I also expect Texans to win ;-). But I don’t think y’all are pushovers by any stretch of the imagination. I just think that TJ has gotten just that much better since our last meeting.

I do hope the offensive line does what needs to be done to keep TJ safe and allow our running game to flourish. I think that our losses against Panthers and Colts was mostly because either Eric Winston was hurt and not admitting it, or he was trying to overcompensate for Brisiel not being by his side. Clearly Antoine Caldwell hasn’t been QUITE the player that Brisiel was.

And as you know, we sorely missed Wade Phillips as coordinator during his absence. Sooo =D I’m VERY glad Wade is back.

I feel good about the matchup.

I thought he looked terrific in the short time he was in the game yesterday, and with ’Dre and OD back full time, I expect him to make some big plays against Cincinnati. Once he hits a few down the field, their safeties will have to back off, Foster and Tate will start to rip some big gains and we might be looking at a rout.

Wade’s back, too, so I expect the D to show up and give Dalton a serious headache all day.

So why is it that the media is saying we can't win with a rookie QB

When the Bengals also have a rookie QB? I find it funny but I’m worried about the intelligence level of this country. Yates led the team to a win in Cincy with no Black Jesus. Now in Houston, with the 80 back, we can’t win? Saturday at 3:30, it will be Dre Day.

Madame de Staël once said, "One must choose in life between boredom and suffering." De Staël is dead but there is always an alternative.

We are entirely used to it here in Cincinnati

We’ve gotten media hate and outright apathy at times. Dalton/Green combo has been a bit of an exception lately, but it sounds like fans on both sides of the ball know and understand media oversight.

by CincyTailgater on Jan 3, 2012 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Do you also have a problem with a large fan-base for ?

We have a rather large population who have recently moved here but never really went native. That is, they still support their old team.

While watching Texans games at my local BW3, I have seen a restaurant half filled with Arlington fans, and the odd Pittsburgh and even one of the Ohio teams, I just don’t remember which it was.

There is almost as much Arlington merchandise on the shelves here as Texans, and that is sad. Of course, it was also only the last 3-4 years that you could find UH merchandise in Houston…

Are you asking me...?

…if we have an issue with fanbase saturation in our city? If that’s what you are asking, then no. In the heart of Cincinnati, it’s Bengals country. If you travel about 2 hours north, it’s a pretty split Browns/Bengals fan base with Steelers fans ALWAYS scattered throughout. Anyway, as far as Texans fanbase goes, I’m sure you’ll get your share of fairweatherers after a playoff birth. We had our share in 2005.

Very excited that we are playing in week 2 of January

I saw on the news where Andre’ said “Normally, I’m cleaning out my locker at this time”. AWESOME!

After reading this blog for the last few years – and especially this year – it seems our fans are in two camps:

Kubes is an idiot – fire him for losing the last three games and on top of that not going 16-0.

Kubes is a genius – we’ve been running vanilla plays so no-one can have film, and then in the playoffs WHAM!

Personally – I think both are wrong. I think he’s doing the best he can with what there is to work with. I think the offense is simpler because it’s all the personnel can manage. Sometimes we make plays now, sometimes we dont. I think TJ has had a tough time with reads – and our pass offense has suffered. Our pass protection is not what it was with Schaub, and TJ is holding the ball longer too. Plus – Teams are putting 8 men in the box, and the run game has shut down. But – it’s not part of a grand plan….

Looking at OUR FIRST PLAYOFF GAME EVER – I’m very excited. ‘Dre, OD, Arian and J Jo all healthy. Delhomme had a decent showing, so I believe if he had to, he could run the offense. TJ healthy would be good, but he’s going to have to move the ball downfield so that they can’t stack the box. And, if we have another 1 for 10 3rd down conversion game, we will not win. In fact, we’ll get beat way worse than against Indy.

Defensively – I’m not worried about the line or the LB corps. I am worried about the secondary. AJ Green and the Red Rocket lit us up pretty good last game. J Jo was owned by Green, especially in the first half. K Jax has been pretty shitty, and if Allen continues to give receivers 12 yard cushions off the line we’ll get short passed to death. If Barwin, Cush and Reed can get pressure on Dalton and he can’t get time to throw, we’ll be in business.

Sounded to me like he's more on the "pull him quick if he doesn't produce" camp.

I believe and agree with kubes that this is his time. You’ll know where kubes is at for sure the first time TJ audibles and kubes doesn’t call a time out.

by chuckiepoo on Jan 2, 2012 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I can say that after Delhomme's performance yesterday

I think Kubes can relax a little. But I also think that after TJ’s performance yesterday, we won’t need Delhomme. That was as solid of a first drive as I’ve ever seen. It’s stuff like that that makes me think Kubes is holding his hand.

If everybody was somebody, then nobody would be anybody - Gilbert and Sullivan

by professortex on Jan 2, 2012 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

Agree. TJ looked every inch like an NFL starting QB yesterday.

Koob will stick with him unless he just totally melts down—which we already know he will not do—or gets injured.

TJ is the man, case closed.

by FreedomRide on Jan 2, 2012 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah - I guess I think that TJ should be on a short leash

It’s 1 and done time. If TJ can’t move the offense, maybe Delhomme can. I know that Kubes has a hard time with that though – remember, he wouldn’t pull Schaub when we were way ahead in games….he also won’t abandon his man unless he’s hurt.

I’m on pins and needles until Saturday…….

No kidding!!!!!

I have actually never seen him turn and locate the ball. Now – I did miss the Atlanta game…..

he lucked into that one

he was basically playing safety and was in position to see the ball as it left matt ryan’s hand, just saying he was not responsible for coverage or lack thereof on that play.

Anyone know

who the commentators will be for our game? I knows it’s on NBC but surely Michaels and Collinsworth will be on the other game. I have no idea who their “secondary” commentating team is.

God is not on our side because he hates idiots also.

The way Kubes said

"That will definitely happen. Danieal will go back there…We’ll go back to full strength. We’ve been working that way the last couple of weeks, so that will definitely happen."

when talking about Manning returning punts made me feel like he’s been holding some aces and making other teams think he’s got 2’s. Here’s hoping the QB whisperer uses his wiles to win on Saturday. I’ve been waiting a long time for this game. Let the machinations commence!

I think this too.

Remember, Kubiaks been in the playoffs plenty before. I know "momentum: and all that, but I think he has quite a few (dozens) of plays he’s been holding back b/c of A. Worried about losing T.J. , B) Not wanting teams to get a full playbook and C.) Not having the proper personnel for said plays.

Kubiak knows what he’s doing. I predict the offense is going to be firing on all cylinders, like that absolutely dominating first drive against BESF’s, and honestly we’re going to whoop some ass.

Kicking in the door: A story for the ages!

Hollywood couldn’t write this stuff better. I just realized that the Ravens (formally the Browns), Steelers, and Bengals are all playoff teams and are all former AFC Central teams (the division of the former Oilers). When Bum Phillips was the Head Coach in Houston, after losing to the Steelers in the AFC Championship, he vowed that they had “knocked on the door” to the Super Bowl, but that next year they would “kick it in”. Sadly that never happened.

Fast forward 30 years. A former ball boy for those same Oilers, Gary Kubiak, is now head coach in Houston, and Wade Phillips, Bum’s son, is now the Defensive Coordinator. With all the strife and hardship this franchise has gone through this year, how poetic and AMAZING of a sports story would it be if the Texans go on to take out the Bengals, then the Ravens (old Browns), and then the Steelers in the AFC Championship, finally fulfilling the promise Bum made all those decades ago?

I know I am getting ahead of myself. I just can’t believe how awesome of an opportunity this team has in front of them. It would truly be a story for the ages.

Pretty cool stuff.

And with Antonio “Lycan wolf-ninja” Smith, the movie would appeal to the Twilight crowd and martial arts fans, too!

SPECIAL REQUEST TO ANYONE ATTENDING THE GAME ON SATURDAY

Download a megaphone or bullhorn app on your smartphone, ipod, whatever and use it while you scream your head off. Let’s deafen the motherfuckers every time they have the ball.

We can turn home field advantage into home field dominance.

If I can speak a word on Saturday night, I won’t feel like I did everything I could as a fan…

Looking Ahead by Looking Back

Pregame:

Marvin Lewis was hyped.

We’ve been harping on it here at Cincy Jungle all week: this week’s game against the Houston Texans is huge. And, on Friday, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis finally agreed with us. In fact, while speaking with Bengals.com editor, Geoff Hobson, Lewis called it “the biggest game in his twenty years of NFL Coaching”.

Yes he was talking about the regular season game against the Texans. I’m still amazed by this quote.

Andre Johnson was out, again.

Poor Texan Execution:

3:35, 1st: Yates INT, Bengals take over at Texans 25.

10:56, 2nd: Tate fumbles on Bengals 3.

0:35, 2nd: Rackers misses 47-yard FG. Texans down 16-3

2:07, 3rd: Yates fumbles on Texans 48.

Conclusion:

We won despite having less to play for (according to the Lewis quote), horrible execution and having our key player (AJ vs. their poor secondary) out. And we still won!

All three of these will be reversed this time. Kubiak finally has a chance to prove his genius (the Ravens with a similar offense sliced Cinci last week for tape) and make people forget the last three weeks, the players will be rabid, our execution will be sharp (we’ve been installing playoff wrinkles for several weeks now according to Kubes) and AJ will be rested and healthy for a goal he’s been chasing for 9 years.

I really see this game as a mismatch.

Greetings from Cincy

Looking forward to the matchup, everyone. I personally couldn’t appreciate a better matchup than what we have this Saturday. Both teams are underestimated. Both teams have been handed their share of criticism (we were “supposed to be 0-16 this season”). I get that there will be die hard fans on both sides taking things a little too far, but I’m enjoying every second regardless of the venom out there. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, the meter won’t move for me on our team playing with house money with an already improbable regular season. I won’t repeat the usual observations made about the Bengals (or Texans), whether they’re accurate or not. If people have questions/debate material – have at it. Either way: Looking forward to this. May the best team win!

Congrats on the regular season!

Looks like Dalton to Green is a legit combo for years to come.

Why don’t one of you create a fanpost for the questions and debates. =]

i dont trust k-jax

playing db, anyone else thinks that they should either start jason allen, or give glover quin and danieal manning more snaps at db? glover quin was our best db before j-jo came, he was pretty good, and danieal manning can play db pretty good too. We can place either troy nolan or quinton demps in their spots while one plays db, troy is a really good safety in my eyes
